Collapse AllSunderland Singles - Round 12 | Thursday 27 September 2018 to Wednesday 21 November 2018 (Midpoint: Wednesday 24 October 2018)

This was another exciting round in Sunderland Tennis League with over three quarters of all matches played and a third title in a row for defending champion Warren! We welcomed a few new players to the league alongside the returners and one of these newcomers Olga made her mark finishing as runner up. Well done with your match scheduling to earn the bonus points and thanks for all the commentaries again too... and here's to another great round next time!

Group Summary:

Congratulations to Warren for retaining his group crown in convincing style, winning 6 matches and amassing 15 points to finish 4 points clear of league debutant Olga. Olga was in a close contest for runner up spot with third placed Peter; both played 7 matches and finished on 11 points but crucially Olga won their head to head, helped in part by some favourable net calls! Tom had a successful debut in the league too coming from a set down to win a close 3 setter against Howard and playing well to take Robert all the way to a third set tiebreak. Great tennis everyone!

Player Comments:

  • "This was my first game v Tom and he certainly pushed me all the way.In the first set he went 2-1 ahead and then I managed to get ahead 5-2. Tom then fought back to 5-4 but I held on for 6-4. The second set was also tight but I managed to get on top for a 6-2 win. I look forward to playing Tom again and wish him all the best in all future League games' "  -- Peter
Reveal CommentOlga Glanville v Istvan Soos (Nov 15) 6-3, 5-7 TBC

Player Comments:

  • "Istvan couldn't find his game in the first set but made a magnificent comeback from 1:5 down in the second set to win it 7:5. Playing the third set would have been a real challenge for me (and a tennis treat in a way). Shame we couldn't finish this match today. Well-done Istvan and if we don't get back to this encounter due to the round's deadline, hope to see you in the future rounds."  -- Olga
  • "I was 0:4 down in both sets, however I don`t know how I could come back and won 7:5 the second set. Olga kept me under pressure with her serves and strong backhand shots all the time, my aim was only to try to prevent a whitewash. Nevertheless, my game improved, when the loud (and distracting) cardio tennis music stopped after 9.00pm in the evening. I am sorry that I had to stop after having played for 2 hours, as my family expected me at home, as well as I reached at that point my "bedtime"... All the best Olga to your future games!" Istvan
Reveal CommentOlga Glanville bt Tom Winter (Nov 12) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Although Tom is relatively new to the game, playing against him was a challenge. He served some good serves, chased and got back many balls when I thought I had the point and hit amazing passing shots. Thank you for the game Tom and good luck in the rest of the matches of this round and of course in men's draw at DL!"  -- Olga
Reveal CommentWarren Broadbent bt Istvan Soos (Nov 11) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Always a pleasure and challenge to play Istvan. He caught me on a really good day for me, my cros-court backhand was on fire for a change. There were a number of really good rallies which stretched us both to the limits. Good game Istvan."  -- Warren
Reveal CommentWarren Broadbent v Peter Toase (Nov 9) 6-0, 5-7 TBC

Player Comments:

  • "First set, I don't think Peter will mind me saying I played some fantastic tennis and never gave him a look in. The second set, typical of Peter the wily fox he is on the tennis court he started to play some great tennis and I was struggling to hold my serve with Peter in one game having two break points. The standard of tennis in the second was a joy to be part of and I can't wait until we get on court again for battle to commence!"  -- Warren
  • "Peter or should I call him the wily fox was at his best in the second set where we started off from. The fox totally 'outfoxed' the cub in the second set! I was flattered to only lose the set 5 - 7 as I was continually hanging on to the tail of the fox. One point I thought I had him cornered with a beautiful down the line shot but the fox completely slipped my with a glorious backhand cross court shot so he escaped. Well played Peter you played a fantastic set of tennis, richly deserved." Warren

Reveal CommentHoward McCain bt Robert Wilkinson (Oct 31) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A surprise win for me. Rob was rusty and not at his usual standards at the net and he didn’t serve as well as he normally does. I served the best since I started to play tennis earlier this year. A fair match played in good spirit - all the best Rob and enjoy Berlin. "  -- Howard
Reveal CommentOlga Glanville bt Peter Toase (Oct 29) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It was nice to meet and play Peter, a real gentleman and a universal player who can hit a good variety of shots. I don't feel that the result of this match was fair to Peter as the net was certainly playing for me - I got so many free points on net balls! Nevertheless this game wasn't easy at all because he is so able to make you run all around the court. Thank you for the match Peter; I am looking forward to our next games - league and friendly ones."  -- Olga
Reveal CommentOlga Glanville bt Robert Wilkinson (Oct 24) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Rob is a great guy on an off the court who enjoys every minute of the game. He can serve really well and is keen on coming to the net; during the match I constantly had to think how I could counteract his 'serve and volley' style, point after point. Thanks very much for the game Rob and good luck in all your future matches!"  -- Olga

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentRobert Wilkinson bt Tom Winter (Oct 19) 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-2)

Player Comments:

  • "Great match with Tom. Highly competitive throughout. Tom hit some great winners both cross court and down the line- with a really good serve. Match could have went either way. Strangely it wasn't until the end of the third set that we both started serving better!! I managed to hit a few volleys that I like to do, although Tom's speed around the court made it difficult to finish a point off. Really enjoyed the match Tom- good luck for the rest of your matches and look forward to playing you again soon!"  -- Robert

Reveal CommentWarren Broadbent bt Robert Wilkinson (Oct 13) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Good game as always with Rob. Rob was a bit rusty having not played for a little while. Second set he played some lovely volleys and the rallies got longer and the games tighter. Good luck for the rest of the league Rob, pleasure as always to play you."  -- Warren
Reveal CommentTom Winter bt Howard McCain (Oct 13) 5-7, 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "My first match in the league and a very competitive and enjoyable one against Howard with him taking the first set 7-5 before I fought back to win the second 6-2 and edged a tight deciding set 7-5 to win the match. Reveal CommentWarren Broadbent bt Olga Glanville (Oct 10) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "It was a pleasure to meet and play Olga. The score line doesn't to Olga justice, she caught me on a day when I was very consistent in everything I did apart from serve. I wish I had the power of Olga's serve! I was really pleased with how I returned serve in the match and particularly pleased to win the match with a forehand cross court lob which is one of my favourite shots. Well played Olga, you will certainly win more matches than you lose! "  -- Warren
