Collapse AllSunderland Singles - Round 15 | Thursday 4 July 2019 to Wednesday 28 August 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 31 July 2019)

A smaller group two than ideal and a few more matches not played that the aficionados would have liked, but Sunderland didn't disappoint in the quality of tennis played. Thanks again for your commitment, and if you can spread the word for the late summer into autumn round, we would be really grateful! Here's to next time.

Group Summary:

Warren is no stranger to winning the top group in Sunderland and he was once again in fine form this time! As notable as his excellent tennis is his generosity with supportive commentaries. Fun to read, they should act as real encouragement to the chasing pack who in many cases are not nearly as far off from causing an upset as you might think from the scores alone. Well done Warren, and to runner-up Tom who just edged ahead of Peter in the points tally.

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet and play Alin this morning in what was a very close game, both sets could have gone either way but I just managed to edge them in the end. Alin has some excellent shots and I’ll look forward to more games with him in the future."  -- Tom

  • "Great match. First time played against each other - hope for more close matches in the future."  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentWarren Broadbent bt Stephen Pollard (Jul 27) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "First time I have played Stephen and what a good game it was! First set was locked at 3 -3 then I managed to string a couple of good games together to break serve and finally won 6 - 4. Second set score line appears it was easier but it certainly wasn’t, twice at 40 - 30 in my favour I got 2 favourable net cords to win both games and in another game at 30 - 15 another favourable net cord to help win that game. Stephen played some fantastic shots with a Federer esq backhand down the line the highlight, it was sensational. Really enjoyed the game with Stephen and I hope we manage to play many more games."  -- Warren
Reveal CommentWarren Broadbent bt Peter Toase (Jul 26) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "I played some of my very best tennis, my serve was strong with no double faults. Can't remember missing a return as well. I think Peter was a bit hampered by a bad foot which meant his movement was as good as normal. It was still a good game of tennis with some excellent rallies. "  -- Warren
Reveal CommentTom Winter bt Manu Rangar (Jul 24) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "First game with Manu and there were some good rallies and he’s got some great shots in his locker but unfortunately he wasn’t consistent enough today which led to a fairly comfortable victory in the end. An enjoyable game though and I’ll look forward to playing Manu again in the future. "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentPeter Toase bt Tom Winter (Jul 18) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Another hard game with Tom, who is certainly improving. The first set at 3-3 could have gone either way but I managed to gain control and finish it off. In the second set I went 5-0 ahead and Tom managed to claw back to 5-2 before I finished the set. "  -- Peter
Reveal CommentWarren Broadbent bt Alin Gavriloae (Jul 16) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "I came off the court dripping with sweat as it was a really hard game. Alin played some fantastic shots none better than one cross court backhand in the second set which wouldn't have looked out of place at Wimbledon! I had to be at my best every game as they all were tough games. My consistency again was the deciding factor making Alin fight for every point. What I would say is if the likes of Alin, Tom and Manu (not played Stephen yet) keep on practising and developing like they are the Sunderland League is going to one fantastic league to play in with these up and coming stars fighting the old guard of Peter and I. I for one can't wait to play future games against all these people."  -- Warren
Reveal CommentWarren Broadbent bt Manu Rangar (Jul 13) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "We played on the hard courts outside due to the lack of availability indoor. The courts are not the easiest to play on as the bounce is not and pace of the courts is not always consistent. Nevertheless it was a good game with Manu who played some really good shots, one particular forehand down the line in the second set stands out which was like a rocket. Manu has a fantastic forehand, one I would love. He just needs more regular game time and I for one know his consistency and game would improve no end and become a really dangerous opponent to play. "  -- Warren
Reveal CommentWarren Broadbent bt Tom Winter (Jul 8) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A really hard thought game in which the scoreline doesn't reflect what a hard close match it was. As always with Tom there were plenty of fantastic rallies. Tom is getting better and better with every league which is a credit to him. "  -- Warren
Reveal CommentPeter Toase bt Alin Gavriloae (Jul 8) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Alin gave me a very tough game. In the first set he went 1-0 ahead and serving very well but I managed to get on top of his serve and win the first set . The second set started as the first and Alin went 3-1 ahead and playing very well. Somehow I managed to get back in the game and clinched the second set. Looking forward to playing Alin again in the future. "  -- Peter
  • "Congrats Peter, very good game, amazing fitness," -- Alin

Group Summary:

A very small group this time and unfortunately Col didn't get going. But the couple of matches that were played were really close and looked like a lot of fun. Commiserations to Tony who played in both matches but didn't get a win - but well done for making it so close that he still emerged with two points. So, with a three-way tie on points, we have to look for the player who conceded the fewest sets and games and on this narrowest of measures, the winner is Howard!

Player Comments:

  • "What a great match against Tony today. Tony started great and I seen a huge improvement straight away compared to last time. Tony took the 1st set 6-3, I felt more comfortable in the 2nd set and took it 6-3. But the final set was really tough. Tony led 4-1 by not missing and he played some great forehand’s. I had to battle hard and managed to pull through winning it 6-4. Well played Tony, good luck for your final match! "  -- Scott
