Collapse AllWandsworth All Star Singles - Round 22 | Thursday 1 February 2018 to Wednesday 4 April 2018 (Midpoint: Wednesday 7 March 2018)

Almost two thirds of all possible matches were played throughout this round so well done for some great efforts in organising and the dedication you have shown to each other! We saw some icy conditions but most battled through. It's lovely to see a league so involved and showing such strong sportsmanship. Well done Wandsworth, you are All Stars!

Group Summary:

Both Tom and Stuart finished on exactly the same number of points at the top of the group, which just goes to show how close this contest was. Tom managed to remain undefeated in this group including a win against Stuart which meant he took the title - congratulations! Well done to Stuart too who was actually the only person able to play against everyone else in the group, an excellent feat. The majority of players earnt bonus points in this group so well done for your dedication and organising skills! It was evidently a great group to be in with lots of lovely comments describing the matches.

Player Comments:

  • "The rain started just as we stepped on court and remained throughout, so not the easiest conditions to play in. Brian and I did get some good rallies going despite the slippery conditions and had a nice, competitive match."  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentTom Overbury bt George McPherson (Mar 27) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A match with ups and downs for both of us but some really good hitting at times in particular in the first set which could have gone either way. Whoever won that was always favourite to win the next. Very pleased to get the win as George is clearly a very good player. "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentStuart Lawrence bt James Burridge (Mar 23) 7-6 (7-4), 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A bit of a scrappy and long 1st set that could have gone either way. Whichever of us won that 1st set was always likely to go on and take the 2nd, so I was pleased to be able to see out the tie break. Nice match, thanks James."  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentTom Overbury bt Stuart Lawrence (Mar 20) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Relieved to get the win against Stuart as he beat me last time around. The scoreline is slightly deceiving as there were some high quality rallies in there at times. Thanks for the game Stuart. "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentGeorge McPherson bt Simon Gravatt (Mar 19) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Two hard-fought sets, especially the second one where I managed to rescue the set from 2-4 down. Very cold and windy - so the beautiful game largely eluded us! But a good battle nonetheless. "  -- George
Reveal CommentTom Overbury bt Simon Gravatt (Mar 8) 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A really tough match which featured a gruelling 90 minute first set. There were some really good rallies in the match with Simon often sending me scrambling around the back of the court. Thankfully the first set took it out of Simon and I managed to close out the last two relatively quickly. Thanks for a good game Simon. "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentGeorge McPherson bt Brian O'neill (Mar 6) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Very slick conditions (after rain on a wet court with surface water). Tight start with no breaks of serve until 4-3 in the first. Finished more comfortable than I thought with the error count creeping up. Look forward to renewing hostilities after Rafa has turbo-charged Brian's forehand in Manacor!"  -- George
Stuart Lawrence bt Richard Holloway (Feb 27) Walkover

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentJames Burridge bt Simon Gravatt (Feb 25) 2-6, 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Another competitive match. Simon is very consistent and can produce Rafa esque forhands when given the chance. Believed in myself a bit more. Controlled the second & third sets better. But as always the score does not reflect the match. A very pleasing win nonetheless "  -- James
Reveal CommentStuart Lawrence bt George McPherson (Feb 22) 2-6, 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was an excellent match of a high standard. I knew I had to up my game in the second set and mix things up as George was striking the ball so well. Thanks for a great match George."  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentStuart Lawrence bt Simon Gravatt (Feb 17) 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A real epic this one. I looked down and out of it 3-5 down in the 2nd set, then having to save 3 match points in the next game. Tough for anyone to lose this match as it really was balanced on a knife edge right until the end. Thanks for such a great match Simon. I need a lie down now!"  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentTom Overbury bt James Burridge (Feb 16) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A very up and down match which at times felt like it could have gone either way. Glad to have got the win against James after losing to him last time around. "  -- Tom
James Burridge bt Carlos Vega Alonso (Feb 12) 6-4, 6-1
Reveal CommentTom Overbury bt Carlos Vega Alonso (Feb 10) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Managed to take advantage of Carlos having an off day with his service. Have been in a similar position before so I realise how hard it can be to keep upbeat! Am sure future matches will be far closer. "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentStuart Lawrence bt Carlos Vega Alonso (Feb 8) 6-2, 3-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A match of momentum shifts, the final shift coming my way as I came back from 2-0 down in the final set. A tough, grit-it-out match that I was happy to come through as Carlos gets a lot of balls back and is not easy to break down."  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentTom Overbury bt Brian O'neill (Feb 8) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Some really good rallies in this match, looking forward to playing against Brian after his Rafa trip!"  -- Tom
Reveal CommentBrian O'neill bt James Burridge (Feb 4) 7-5, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Phew! Relieved to get through this one! Don't let the second set score fool you - this was a battle royale. James mk2 is a different kettle of fish these days - he has upped his game in every department which I had secretly suspected judging by some good results in the last league. I was ready for a battle and thank god I was because James was not giving anything away for free. This was by far our best contest... I will need to keep up with James improvement rate if I'm to edge the next match! Great game! "  -- Brian
Reveal CommentBrian O'neill bt Simon Gravatt (Feb 3) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Relieved to get a win against Simon after he whupped me last time round. He doesn't give many free points away and anything short he will hit a winner...so you need a game plan and you need to execute it well! Thankfully I managed that today in pretty atrocious conditions (again). Looking forward to the next match when hopefully it's not raining, or freezing cold!"  -- Brian

Group Summary:

Congratulations to Alex Webb, the winner of Group 2, who managed to be the only player who played everyone else! He showed some great scheduling skills, not to mention tennis skills, winning a mighty six of his matches along the way as well as earning his bonus points. Second place went to Vivian who actually managed to beat our champion in what was described as a 'hard fought battle in a blustery wind on a damp court.' Had Vivian managed to play a couple of extra matches we may have had a different winner and back to back titles for Vivian! Lots of matches were played with lots of bonus points in this group so well done for really getting stuck in!

Both sets really could have gone either way as Joseph had a break point at 5-5 in the first set which was settled by a great rally. And the second set tie break was close right to the end. Looking forward to our next encounter which I'm sure will be another nail biter."  -- Jon

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentAlex Beaumont bt Joseph Harker (Mar 22) 1-6, 6-0, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A crazy game as the score suggests - a real roller-coaster! Joseph stormed the 1st set and I played terribly, but I found my fighting spirit in the 2nd: hitting back and breaking Joseph's rhythm (the 1st game of the 2nd set proved crucial). Joseph went 5-2 up in the 3rd and twice had a match point on 5-4 to take it...but I saved them and levelled at 5-5. The last 2 games were ones of endurance and lots of safe points - however, we also had some crazy rallies where we didn't hold anything back. I took my only match point which came as a big relief as I didn't have the energy left for a tie-break! My matches with Joseph are always tight but this was the closest of the lot!"  -- Alex

Reveal CommentJon Rutter bt Alex Beaumont (Feb 17) 7-6 (7-5), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "As usual an incredibly tight match with Alex. The first set could not not have been closer with both of us breaking serve more frequently than holding it. Then neck an neck in the tie break until a crazy last point culminating in a manic rally at the net where we were just getting our rackets in the way and hoping it went over. With most games going to deuce and many long rallies it took over 2h 30m to complete 2 sets!! absolutely exhausting."  -- Jon
Reveal CommentJustin Gibson bt Joseph Harker (Feb 17) 6-1, 4-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Great day with sunshine and a fun game. I won the first set easily and then at 3-2 in the 2nd we had about 8-10 deuces with Joseph coming out on top. From that point onwards Joseph played some great shots and seemed unstoppable.... suddenly he was 2-0 up in the third. Momentum swung again and I managed to start hitting the lines and fortunately won the deciding set. Thanks Joseph. "  -- Justin

Group Summary:

Congratulations to Sam Smith who turned black to gold in this group by remaining undefeated out of the four matches he played as well as earning his bonus points. He somehow only managed to lose 5 games in 8 sets which is an incredible feat. He's also now won back to back titles in our leagues, another achievement to add to his already remarkable win. However, Stephen did finish on exactly the same points as Sam but unfortunately lost his head to head match against him which meant he came in an extremely respectable second place! Lots of bonus points were earned in this group so well done for some great organising skills and dedication.

Two players in this group were undefeated at the top but it was Kumaran who managed to get that one extra match in which gave him the win - many congratulations! Gavin came in a close second after a show of some solid tennis. It really would have been an interesting match up between Kumaran and Gavin; maybe next round? A special mention to Alexander who actually finished on the same number of points as Gavin but unfortunately he lost a match against our winner Kumaran. What a close group it was! Lots of effort went in to earning bonus points so well done on your dedication! A warm welcome back to Richard after a break from the league, 8 points is quite the return! Group Summary:

Congratulations to our undisputed champion Christian who managed a 100% win record in this group with 6 wins from his 6 matches. He also picked up his bonus points for some solid early scheduling - congratulations! Second place was a much tighter affair with only one point separating three players. Timothy, Gemma and Amar were so well matched and fought so hard for that runner up spot, but in the end it was Timothy who clinched the spot as his only loss came at the hands of our champion. He also managed to beat Gemma and Amar but not easily: both matches were three set epics which highlights how close it really was for that second spot! Lots of lovely match comments were left so it was clearly a great group to be a part of. Welcome back to Christian, Gemma, Henry and Sandy after a break from the league - real effort was put into the comebacks! Welcome to Timothy and Steve who each played six matches, an admirable amount for the first round.

An in-form Gemma would have given me bigger problems like she did in the second set. She used her laser accurate groundstrokes to keep me at bay. I was down 2-5 and had to fend off a set point at 3-5. But I nervously dug deep to win the second set at 7-5 narrowly. Thanks Gemma for the match and hope you have shaken off that rust."  -- Christian

  • "We played a lot of good rallies on a sunny Sunday morning! The score doesn’t reflect the quality of the match we had as Henry was very quick in returning shots at tight angles. He produced a lot of great passing shots too. "  -- Christian

Player Comments:

  • "Thank you Steve for a lovely afternoon of great Tennis! Really liked your serve when firing, the big lefty out wide to the backhand is to be feared! I’d like to take the credit for your new best shot, the double handed backhand! Good luck with the rest of the league, I’m sure with more matches under your belt you will recover the form of years gone by..."  -- Amar

Player Comments:

  • "We waited a couple of days for better weather, and were punished with a freezing evening! It didn't stop us though. Thanks for a great match Jenny! I was really impressed with you backhand and net play - you seemed to have me every time I let you get too close! Nice to meet you and looking forward to next time."  -- Timothy

Player Comments:

  • "Amar fought a very good match as he had me on the ropes in the 2nd set, down 2-5 with him serving with 3 set points at hand. Unfortunately, forces of nature conspired against him: Sun, Wind and Netcord. They allowed me to catch up and recompose myself to win the set. The last game of the match was the toughest and longest as it had lots of drama. Having deuces and advantages of our own. I enjoyed every bit of battle."  -- Christian

Player Comments:

  • "Thank you Jenny for a lovely match, really enjoyed your club, looking forward to my next invite! Loved your groundstrokes on both sides particularly the backhand. I think the twix at the start of set 3 gave me the edge and the energy I needed to get over the line! Best of luck with the rest of your matches, was a pleasure playing you.."  -- Amar

Group Summary:

Ben managed a perfect record in this group. Not only did he play everyone in the group, he went on to win all of them too without the loss of a set. Many congratulations! Second place was much closer and ended up being a one point battle between Josh and Paul. In the end Josh just pipped Paul to the post in their match though apparently lots of the games went to deuce which suggests it was a very close battle! Lots of matches were played throughout the round so well done on some fantastic effort in organising them and persevering!

Josh was rapid round the court and served much better than me. In the 2nd set I got a better handle on some of his tricky slice and spin shots and managed to edge it out by being a bit more consistent. Thanks Josh for the athletic game with lots of really long rallies!"  -- Ben
