Collapse AllWest Ham Park & Newham Singles - Round 38 | Thursday 20 August 2020 to Wednesday 14 October 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 16 September 2020)

We had one extra group this round and 17 new players which made for another bumper round with lots of tennis played! With the onset of Autumn there was the expected mixed bag of weather conditions but this didn't deter you from completing nearly three quarters of all possible matches... so full marks for effort and we hope to see you all back next time!

Group Summary:

It was deja vu at the top of Group 1 with the top 3 unchanged from last round although the point scores were closer this time! Congrats to Ivan for successfully defending his title by playing one more match than Harry and finishing a single point clear although both players recorded 6 wins. Kudo to Harry for winning their head to head though, coming from a set down to win in 3 close sets, while Jan prevailed in an even closer 3 setter against Alan.

Player Comments:

  • "At 6-1 5-1 up I thought I was in for a nice quiet evening. And then Alan suddenly woke up and played some scorching tennis. Winners flying off the forehand, serving like a god, and turned round the second, taking it deep into the third. I managed to clutch up a deciding tie break to take the win after two gruelling hours! A great match with a great opponent, thanks so much Alan. "  -- Jan
Reveal CommentIvan Georgiev bt Asad Shan (Sep 28) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Good to play Ivan after few year. Today was not my day and my worst performance of the league. Playing a match on a 4 hour sleep at midday in screeching hot weather and terrible cramps ( sun was terrible today ) and your first serve does not support you is a nightmare especially with a consistent player like Ivan. Good lessons to learn from this and rest properly and play in evenings or early mornings ha Good luck Ivan with rest of matches "  -- Asad
Reveal CommentIvan Georgiev bt Dimitrios Bouras (Sep 28) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable match played in great weather. I have started strong leading 5:0, then Dimitrios found his shots winning 3 games in a row, before I closed the set. The second one was very tight, going through duce almost every game with only one hold of serve between both of us "  -- Ivan

Reveal CommentJan Metcalf bt Winston Balfourth (Sep 22) 6-3, 4-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Just typing this match report is making me feel tired...to say this match ebbed and flowed is an understatement. At 1 set up and ahead in the second I felt like I had the match wrapped up. And then Winston activated what can only be described as God mode. For about 6 games everything that came off his racket flew in. It was a barrage of incredible hitting which took him 3-0 up in the decider. Somehow I managed to mentally hang in there, and slowly turned the tide in the set to clinch it 6-3. Unbelievable match again Winston, as always, a great pleasure to play you. "  -- Jan
Reveal CommentAsad Shan bt Keng Goh (Sep 19) 7-5, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • ''This has to be the most thrilling game of the league. A fantastic first set which included a minimum of 20 to 40 rallys per point, ended with very close 7-5 due to an unfortunate wide ball by Keng. Super strong mental strength and endurance on both ends. Keng was leading 4-2 in the second set, before having learnt my lesson in previous matches, I kept my mental strength calm and collective , taking second set at 6-4. Keng is a superstar top bloke and can’t wait for the next one. Thanks'' -- Asad

Reveal CommentAlan Lam bt Ivan Georgiev (Sep 12) 6-1, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "Having played Ivan 3 or 4 times before and lost all of them, I knew what to expect. I had to change my game, take risks, keep point short and hope the new strategy would work. Thank god it did. In the first set, the backhand approach shots, followed by volleys were working along with the frequent short slices and dropshots. Second set was certainly tight and moremof the same. Ivan was starting to read the play but I managed to crawl over the finish line, having been 2-5 down in the final tie breaker. Starting to cramp before the tiebreaker, if it had gone to a third set, I'm sure I would have lost 6-0. Thanks Ivan for an epic!"  -- Alan

I kept up my attacking instincts to haul the score back in my favour and finally take the final set 7-5. The final 9 games taking over an hour so it was gruelling stuff.'' -- Winston

Second set was balanced as well, with Jan playing nice offensive tennis and me having to defend especially towards the end of the set. Lucky to win the match and the score does not reflect how close the game was. Thanks for the game Jan and looking forward to our next game. "  -- Dimitrios

  • "Hard and enjoyable match as usual with Winston. I tried to outhit him in the first set, but his forehand was way too good for me, and I found myself 1:3 games down. From then my aim was to make the points longer and keep the ball deeper when possible. At the end my defensive game paid out, even after the many clean winners from Winston's racket."  -- Ivan

Player Comments:

  • "To be completed on Sunday 6th September. Dimitrios to serve."  -- Winston
  • "A great sportingly played, athletic match. Some amazing rallies during this match. A common theme throughout this match was that the point really wasn't over until it was over. Dimitrios has a great all court game and ghosts into the net when you least expect it angling volleys that leave you scrambling to stay in the point. The first two sets were so tight that it was really difficult to know who would win. Despite me winning the final set which didn't reflect the overall match we continued playing for two hours. Thanks again Dimitrios for over four hours of great tennis." -- Winston
Reveal CommentKeng Goh bt Jan Metcalf (Aug 30) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Big serves, deep topspin forehands, dangerous backhand slices ... Jan has the complete, all-court game. I was lucky to get the win this time with many games going to multiple deuces to decide the winner. On a different day, the match outcome could have easily gone Jan's way. Good luck in you remaining matches Jan and looking forward to hitting again soon!"  -- Keng
Reveal CommentWinston Balfourth bt Keng Goh (Aug 29) 4-6, 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Keng to serve 1-1 in the final set"  -- Winston
  • "A great match with Keng spread over two days. Great for two single handed backhands to go at each other. Some really great rallies and points. Expecting most matches to be really gruelling this round and this was no exception to that rule. Keng has a great array of shots and keeps you back. The game at 1-1 in the final set went on for around 15 minutes which I managed to take and was probably the pivotal moment in the final set. as we were both going hammer and tongs at each other with neither of us managing to break the other one down until I finally got the break. We will be playing again for sure. Thanks again Keng." -- Winston
Reveal CommentIvan Georgiev bt Jan Metcalf (Aug 29) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Nice match with a nice guy. Jan has more atacking style with strong serve and solid volleys, while I was in defending position most of the time trying to keep the ball in. His serve was getting stronger and He didn't give me a point in his last 2 service games , but thanks to my early break in the set I managed to close the match."  -- Ivan
Reveal CommentHarry Touche bt Dimitrios Bouras (Aug 29) 6-2, 3-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "An exceptional match where we were very even throughout. It was rare to see a game that didn't got to deuce. Indeed, it turns out that whoever got the first break in the set won it! Plenty of super rallies with smashes and lobs, and a fair few passing shots as we both came to the net. Great game, the score doesn't reflect how tight it was!"  -- Harry
Reveal CommentAsad Shan bt Harry Touche (Aug 25) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Asad to serve, Tbc "  -- Asad
  • "This was cracker of a match finishing in two sessions, Harry has a brilliant all around game, being a left handed player, he is very tricky with strong serve and mean forehand and one had to be on his toe all the time. Super intense match and can’t wait for the next one." -- Asad

David is quite an all-rounder, from baseline rallies to volleys and may I say he has one of those beautiful down the line backhand winners. In the third set we broke each other serves multiple times and arrived at tie break. Once there both David and I had multiple chances for match point.
