Reveal CommentAlan Lam bt Mo Noor (Oct 8) 6-1, 3-6, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Long battle as always with Mo. Our last match lasted three hours so happy this ended after 2. I won the first set and I don't think I've played better than that in recent times. In the second set, Mo started reading and working out my game, especially my dropshots and slice, and raced to a 4-0 headstart. I switched attack to defence and dug dig. Grinding out each point with Mo, I managed to claw back the score to 5-3 and had break points to get back on serve but Mo was solid and served it out. Eventually, in the third set, as points were so brutal in the second, I think Mo's feet started giving way. I played more aggressively, and fortunately it worked to my advantage. Look forward to playing again. Cheers Mo."  -- Alan

Reveal CommentAlan Lam bt Winston Balfourth (Sep 5) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks for the game. Definitely caught Winston on an off day. The match was summed up on match point. We were trading balls when Winston hit a good approach shot and then came to the net to volley a ball, which dropped near the net. I sprinted forward to attempt a passing shot but managed to frame it instead, which then the shot somehow turned into a lob that sailed over Winston and sneaked in. Very bizarre!! Look forward to our next match."  -- Alan

Player Comments:

  • "Third set, 2:1 to Reg Tragically, we ran out of time to complete the 3rd set just as the match was becoming juicy, in Reg's word. It was a tight first set, but Reg kept his composure despite being a break down to win the last 3 games to take the set. A few loose points at the start of the 2nd set saw Reg fall 0:3 down, and that gave me room to be aggressive and win the 2nd set. By this point, we ran it of time so the match continues ..."  -- Keng
Reveal CommentAsad Shan bt Ivan Georgiev (Oct 11) 6-4, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "Ivan is evidently known as the most solid respected player on Westham territory. Having played 5 hours yesterday, I was knackered arriving at 10.30am. Ivan went into a lead straight away 4-2 before I won 4 games in a row, the last game lasted 30 minutes with over 20 deuces. I was spent and took it’s toll. I did have match point at 5-4 again but Ivan being Ivan fought back and it was a tie break and cramps started popping in every part of my legs and I was just glad to wrap this up when Ivan’s shot hit the net, thank you so much Ivan for a hard fought epic match and look forward to playing more matches and hitting soon. "  -- Asad
Reveal CommentIvan Georgiev bt Patrick Doorly (Oct 9) 6-0, 4-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It was nice playing Patrick for a first time. I had the advantage to play the second match for the day and my rhythm was good, while Patrick was playing more aggressively and made too many errors in the first set. That change in the second set when the errors became winners. Fortunately for me I managed to defend better in the last set. Looking forward to play again"  -- Ivan
Reveal CommentIvan Georgiev bt Jeffrey Wan (Oct 2) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Nice match with one of my regular hitting partners. Unlike our usual hits I had to defend most of the time, while Jeff was varying his game, and despite having way more winners than me was unlucky to convert his advantage in the few long games we had in the 2nd set."  -- Ivan
Reveal CommentKeng Goh bt Hugo Lock (Sep 24) 5-7, 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "What an amazing match against Hugo! Coming into the match, I had a sneaking suspicion that Hugo was playing himself into form from his previous matches. I was not wrong. The match was super competitive throughout with both players hitting freely. Really looking forward to hitting with Hugo again. Good luck in your remaining matches Hugo!"  -- Keng
Reveal CommentKeng Goh bt Patrick Doorly (Sep 15) 6-1, 7-6 (7-3)

Player Comments:

  • "It was great fun playing against Patrick. Both of us were a bit tight in the first set but I managed to limit my errors and take the 1st set. Patrick came storming back in the 2nd set and raced to a 5:1 lead. I managed to claw my way back to set up a tie break and momentum carried me through to take the win. Thanks for the game Patrick and looking forward to playing again soon."  -- Keng
Reveal CommentAsad Shan bt Hugo Lock (Sep 9) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Hugo is a lovely bloke with great banter during breaks and good laughs. We both started strong breaking each other’s serve. Hugo has a super fast serve and super athletic so it was very tricky to play him. I managed to go into a 5-2 lead before Hugo hit another gear and pushing me into the corner. We had one deuce game lasting 15 minutes and luckily I won that and held my nerve to the take the first set. Second set started with holding serves with eventually Hugo being broken and I led 5-2. Knowing how tricky Hugo is to pass by, I luckily closed the set on my serve. Great playing you H and look forward to more playing in the future. Good luck with remaining games. "  -- Asad

Player Comments:

  • "It was a glorious Sunday and it was my second group match with an opponent unknown to me. Patrick turned out to be an awesome opponent . He has a good game overall and super athletic. We both started strongly before I took the first set. Second set literally went on serve till Patrick broke my serve and I had to hit some next gears to survive and not go into a third set. It was a pleasure playing you Patrick and look forward to hitting balls soon , thanks "  -- Asad
Reveal CommentJeffrey Wan bt Keng Goh (Sep 4) 6-2, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "An absolute pleasure playing Keng. We play on a regular basis and know each other's game quite well, as usual it is never easy facing him. The match took two days to finish and every point had to be earned. Lady luck was on my side and I managed to take the first set. On the second set, Keng, as American Football Player Marshawn Lynch would say, went into Beast Mode (a term referring to a player being unstoppable) and started leading the set - It felt impossible to win a point off of him. I had to crawl myself out of the hole and managed to level the score. Thankfully, lady luck stuck by my side and i managed to win the second set. Honestly it could have gone either way. Keng - thank you for the match. thanks jeff wan"  -- Jeffrey

Player Comments:

  • "I have been playing tennis in West Ham Park for the last 10 years and Reg is someone that I have admired from a distance as I have never played him but always used to watch his game and was in awe. So playing him for the first time was a nerve wracking experience as I knew that he was a complete game player and this was going to be a tough day. I had booked a court for three hours we ended up completing it in nearly 4 hours. The match started in a very fast fashion way, Where I took the lead in the first set and closed it quickly before Reg hit back hard and took the second set. Most rallies will be in counted at 20+. Luckily for me I scraped through in the final set. Thank you Reg for being an amazing opponent and it was my pleasure."  -- Asad

With an all court game and high tennis mind, Asad has the unique ability to make the court seem small to the opponent. Great match Asad and looking forward to our next match" -- Keng

As per standard the first set lasted over 2 hours and the match went into the next day, when I managed to win 3 games in a row and win the match before Keng calibrated his shots."  -- Ivan

Player Comments:

  • "A really long match with lots of great rallies and many games going to deuce. It was clear both of us could easily play consistent but it would be mentally and physically draining so it was a game decided by being more aggressive. The first set could have gone either way with breaks back and forth and the lead switching around. The 2nd set David took an early break and played some great attacking tennis and held on to take the set. In the final set, I think I had a bit more left in the tank and again with some close deuce games, I was lucky to get a double break and see out the match. Reveal CommentUche Chukwu bt Zak Iqbal (Sep 5) 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Zak had a slow start and needed some time to find his rhythm while I shot straight out of the gates like Sherger. The match levelled out a bit more in the second and Zak was able to play his game and execute some of his famous lobs that are just unstoppable, even when I anticipated them well ahead of time. In the end I think I'd worn Zak down enough earlier on that his comeback didn't have time to alter the eventual outcome. Thanks for a nice Sunday morning workout, Zak, and good luck in your remaining matches."  -- Uche

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentUche Chukwu bt Alexei Coban (Aug 31) 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6)

Player Comments:

  • "An epic match that rolled over from day 2 of the round with me in control of the second set having a 5-0, 30-15 lead and serving to level the match. Alexei had promised he was going to do everything he could to come back and take the match in 2 sets, even sending me a link to the infamous match where Nadal did something like that. I told him he's not Nadal. Oh but did he try! With a flurry of big plays and a superb confidence Alexei took the game, winning 3 in a row until I managed to close it out at 6-3. But the drama didn't end there. As if one big comeback wasn't enough he saved two match points when I led 5-2, 40-15 in the final set and saved another in the tie break before I managed to step up and close this epic tie. Bravo"  -- Uche
Reveal CommentMingjie Wang bt Zak Iqbal (Aug 31) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A great game with Zak, with lots of long rallies, especially two points at the second set, we had more than 30 rallies, with each taking a point. Zak is strong with defence and skilful with his lob shots. Looking forward to playing it again! "  -- Mingjie
Reveal CommentUche Chukwu bt Ovidiu Candrea (Aug 28) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "The first set was closer than it appears with excellent rallies form both us using the full width and breadth of the court. Ovidiu produced some superb backhand down-the-line-winners and it took a lot of focus for me to close out the set. Ovidiu's serve let him down in the second, while mine improved in consistency and I think that was the key metric underscoring the second set score. A really good match and enjoyable contest despite bizarre weather fluctuations. "  -- Uche
Reveal CommentMirco Valenza bt Uche Chukwu (Aug 27) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Uche is a very tough opponent, he has a very complete game with an especially good serve, net game and a fantastic overhead. The match was very close throughout with 2 hours and 15 minutes of play to complete 2 sets. Best of luck with the rest Uche and thanks for the fun match."  -- Mirco
Reveal CommentMingjie Wang bt Aly Duncan (Aug 25) 6-7 (8-10), 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A close game! Very enjoyable with some dramatic points. "  -- Aly
  • "It was a great delight to play with Aly. We were very close in terms of our defence and Aly has demonstrated good net skills, which earned him many points. Most of the time, the match was just neck to neck, with lots of long rallies, and the result could easily swing to the other way. I am looking forward to playing with him again." -- Mingjie
Alexei Coban bt Ovidiu Candrea (Aug 24) 6-3, 6-4
Reveal CommentZak Iqbal bt Ovidiu Candrea (Aug 23) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "The match was closer than the score suggested and we had some great rallies in the first set.Ovidiu's backhand was definitely the shot of the match and I look forward to playing him again soon:)"  -- Zak
Reveal CommentUche Chukwu bt Aly Duncan (Aug 22) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A thoroughly excellent game with nice corner-to-corner rallies of 8 or 9 shots and lots of variation. Aly's groundstrokes are well executed and deliver nice winners, and his net play is sublime with a handful of delightful volleys that I wish were mine. The score doesn't reflect the level of play on show and I absolutely expect Aly to start picking up some solid results as the round progresses. A really good game. "  -- Uche

Reveal CommentDaniel Boulton bt MG Bouchard (Aug 30) 2-6, 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A challenging and highly educational match on my part - Mathieu is able to get a very impressive amount of spin on his shots and serve, and I definitely struggled in the first set to deal with the unpredictable nature of his game. Fortunately managed to find a way to get balls back in more consistently as the match went on (particularly in the 3rd set, played at a later date on a less than ideal court) and was very pleased to get the win. Will hopefully set up an interesting end to the group also!" -- Daniel

Reveal CommentMG Bouchard bt Nicoleta Moise (Aug 27) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Great hit with Nicoleta. Made me work super hard at times, especially when trying to close out the match! Definitely the most running so far. Match had a good mix of shots and was great to cover so much of the court to get to sneaky angle shots and short balls (not always successfully). Thanks again for the hit and best of luck for the rest of the round!"-- MG
Reveal CommentMG Bouchard bt Jack Gillions (Aug 24) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Don't be deceived by the scoreline, this was a tough morning hit with Jack. We kicked things off with an 18-point game and ended with a 12-pointer -- 27% of the total points played were in first and last games! We were both struggling physically at times (got to love a 7am start time!), but there were still some great rallies and miraculous gets on both sides of the net. Jack also found time to audition for Bambi On Ice! Even the random spectator in the park during first set enjoyed the show. Jack saved 9/15 break points, of which six were set points and five were match points. Definitely had to dig deep to get it done. Thanks for the hit, Jack. Best of luck for the rest of the round. Hopefully we can hit again soon!"  -- MG

  • "Really fun match with some good rallies throughout. Welcome back to tennis Thomas and good luck with the rest of the round!"  -- Daniel
Reveal CommentMG Bouchard bt Thomas Mears-Alcaide (Aug 19) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A very fun hit to open the new round and lots of running. 11 of 18 games went to deuce and the less said about first serve in percentages and number of double faults for both of us the better. Admirable effort from Tom, who said he hasn't played in 10 years (mind games, perhaps?), but it was evident he's still fit enough to chase after the sweetest of drop shots and acute angled shots, although not quite enough in the penultimate game at 4-4 when he was done like a kipper three points in a row. A couple of bad service games at the wrong time didn't help his cause either, but he should get better later in the round. Thanks for the hit, Tom, welcome to the league, and I look forward to seeing what your attempt at revenge looks like!"  -- MG
