Another competitive round at the Westway League. It's good to see some familiar names rising through the ranks. Thanks all for your efforts in getting onto the courts and we hope to see you again next time!

Group Summary:

Close competition here particularly between frontrunners Flavio and Adam, who both topped the table with 12 points. With a victory in their head to head however, Flavio holds on to his title as group one champ! Great commitment too from the rest of the group, with the vast majority of matches getting played.

Reveal CommentHerve Lagadec bt Christian Huot (Feb 13) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "The opening game started with long rallies and I knew that we were heading to a very physical match. Lots of various shots from baseline to the net were played in the first set and it was tighter than what the score says. In the second set Christian was more confident and had powerful strokes that made me run a lot. I had to fight a long last game to close the game but Christian was coming back and I could feel the game starting to slip away otherwise. Very intense and physical game!"  -- Herve
Reveal CommentHerve Lagadec bt Sebastian Anastassiou (Feb 11) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Very good match against Sebastian. Score is not reflecting the intensity of the games as in the first set Sebastian was always leading on my service games and had to get away from that situation after many deuce points. Sebastian was gradually more controlled in the second set and I had to defend a lot of points. Really pleasant game."  -- Herve

Group Summary:

Plenty of the 3 setters across the score board here showing how competitive this group was. Round of applause then for andrey, who played 6 matches and won 5 of them - using bonus points and an extra set won to pull away from Rupert in 2nd place, who also finished the round with an impressive 5 wins.

Reveal CommentAndrey Yakunin bt Nik Slingsby (Feb 21) 7-5, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "The action started in straight in the 1st game with Nik breaking Andrey in the opening game. And in the 8th game Nick extended his lead with the 2nd break. But a break back and a further one at 4-5 levelled the match. A solid serving game and a 3rd break at 6-5 delivered the opening set to Andrey. The score of the 2nd set doesn't reflect what was actually happening on court: the game was much cleaner then int he 1st set with a lot less UE from both sides. A good match with interesting net approaches and lobs through out."  -- Andrey
Rupert Coltart bt George Olu (Feb 20) 6-0, 6-2
Reveal CommentAndrey Yakunin bt George Olu (Feb 20) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "The action kick started early in the match when the 2nd game saw 5 deuce points played before Andrey finally to converted a breakpoint. With good serving from both ends, break points were few to come by through out the match and conversion was what really mattered. The 7th game saw some of the best tennis of the match with George first lobbying Andrey on approach for 30-40 and then converting the first breakpoint with a precisely placed BH passing shot. Nice clean tennis with quite a bit of running from both sides."  -- Andrey
Reveal CommentAndrey Yakunin bt Paulo Weiler (Feb 13) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "The match tightened up in the 5th game of the 2nd set, when Paulo broke back to level the set at 3-3. Further developing his offensive to secure a 30-0 lead on his serve, two important and long points were played with deep crosses both FH and BH from both sides with Paulo first executing a classic FH down the line and Andrey catching another passing shot, but this time on the BH, to bring the game to 40-15. An unfortunate chain of 3 consequtive UE let Andrey take another break for 4-3, placing him nicely to finish the match in the two subsequent games. A good match, with both sides commanding enough speed and reaction to recover safely most of the drop shot attempts."  -- Andrey
Reveal CommentAndrey Yakunin bt Advait Kapadia (Feb 13) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Advait started strong keeping his serves and immediately securing a break on Andrey's 2DF. Andrey broke back in the 5 game of the set and went on to secure his hold of set 1. The 2nd set was started on a more cautious side by both players, and was producing some quality tennis and long rallies. At 30-0 in the 5th game Advait served a solid diagonal and immediately developed the pressure with a nice top spin FH cross right in the corner; Andrey reached the ball at full stretch out with a well placed drop shot to the advantage quarter; a dashing approach to the net a well placed BH short cross secured the winner for Advit in what was the best point of the match. However, a break from 40-0 followed, and there was no further change of tide."  -- Andrey

Group Summary:
