Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • We have doubles and singles rounds!
  • Players/teams are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • The league is mixed sex, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • In doubles teams may be any combination of gender
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also available on the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Giuseppe Osso

"Thanks for letting me play. Very much enjoyed."

Wimbledon Park Player

"That was a great group, the best ever. Even though I lost my last game yesterday, in the middle of it, at even stevens I was having such a great time that I thought to myself that I don't really care if I win or lose, this is just great! Lovely people and challenging, equally matched games. It was an absolute delight and has raised my game greatly. Please put me down for the next round"

It took about 80 minutes in all, and after all that hard work I was very relieved that I edged the tiebreak - I'm sure Rachel's feelings on the matter were rather different! The second set remained close and also took a good long while, not helped by an interruption to locate another court. Thanks for the match, and all the best with the remaining games."  -- Morgan

Player Comments:

  • "Our match started in treacherous conditions on court 10 before Emily wisely suggested a nice to the slightly less icy court 8. It was a topsy turvy affair and I don't think either of us could quite explain why the first two sets were so extreme - the third set was much more reflective of how close it was, with many long rallies and sequences of deuces. Very enjoyable."  -- Morgan

Player Comments:

  • "3rd set score was 13-11 but the form doesnt allow me to enter this. When we got to 6-6 in the 3rd neither of us could remember LTL rules on match completion so we kept on playing. On and on...! Such a close, hard fought encounter throughout and some great individual shots. Unfortunately Brendan slipped towards the end of the match and this may have given me an advantage as he recovered his calm. But we were both properly exhausted and in need of a big lunch at the finish. Thanks Brendan, really enjoyed playing again. Hope we both recover well and complete the group"  -- Rachel

When she went 2 up in the second set I was worried we were going to three sets (after my 3 hour 3 set epic against Chris yesterday I would definitely have run out of juice!) but luckily I had another streak to take the match. Loads of fun: thank you so much Eleanor. I look forward to playing again. "  -- Isobel

Player Comments:

  • "Fantastic match with Chris, the score line does not do justice for the match played - we went to deuce a number of times. The bright low sun made it very tricky on one side of the court. Group Summary:

Wow! What a fantastic group. Unfortunately Yo and Basak had to withdraw, but every single other match was played! That's a fantastic achievement - we know what a lot of commitment and effort it takes to arrange doubles so very well done all. Tim and Yo top the group - congratulations. They tied on points with runners up Kate and Jenny but won the head to head. Almost every match came with a commentary so we were pleased to learn about Tom's rocket like backhand, Amy's aces, the titanic clash between Mark & Michael and Fiona & Diane and an unexpected appearance, mid match,by a small boy dressed as a dinosaur.

Reveal CommentTim Husain & Yo Sato bt Fiona Maclean & Diane Skinner (Dec 1) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A beautiful sunny day. Fiona and Diane started at a blistering pace in both sets leading them 2-1. With a bit of elemental help from the weather (sun in eyes, wind and chill factor), Yo and Tim clawed their way back into both sets. The final result being closer than the score suggests, a good time was had by all. This was the final match of the season for both pairings. Good luck everyone for next season. "  -- Tim

Player Comments:

  • "Thank you Jane and Gareth. Always a pleasure to play you even in such miserable wet and grey conditions."  -- Fiona
Reveal CommentThomas Mees & Amy Ruff bt Gareth Jones & Jane Hansen (Nov 24) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Fun friendly match on one of the nicer afternoons of November. Gareth's kick serve out wide was a very tricky shot to deal with, often leaving easy pickings for Jane at the net when we did manage to return it. The scoreline doesn't do the match justice - there were quite a few hard fought and fast paced points that had everyone chasing the corners, but ultimately I think we were just a little more consistent on the day and were fortunate to win some key points early in each set. (It's worth noting that a friendly third set we played afterwards held even all the way to a tiebreak.) Thank you Gareth & Jane, lovely to meet you both."  -- Thomas
Reveal CommentTim Husain & Yo Sato bt Kate Marsh & Jenny Hong (Nov 24) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "After a blistering start from both teams, service was broken in the first 3 games before Yo steadied the ship and held serve. Many deuces followed. The second set Tim and Yo stormed to a 5-0 lead before some brilliant serving from Kate pegged us back. We held our nerve to close out the match, but it could easily have gone either way. "  -- Tim
Reveal CommentTim Husain & Yo Sato bt Gareth Jones & Jane Hansen (Nov 22) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Gareth and Jane were kind enough to come over and play near us in Kingston. A very amiable match and the scoreline is probably flattering as there were lots of deuces. A good match played in the spirit of the game. We even mixed up and played a friendly tie break afterwards. Thanks everyone for a fun evening. "  -- Tim
Reveal CommentMark Hassall & Michael Wright bt Fiona Maclean & Diane Skinner (Nov 19) 6-4, 5-7, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A titanic clash lasting over 3 weeks (take that Isner and Mahut) and ending on a night as cold as would have formed the iceberg that sunk it (the Titanic, not Isner or Mahut). Unfortunately we don't remember the first two sets, so we assume they were a whirlwind of endless deuces as is tradition. Fuelled by pork pies (Mike at least), Fiona and Diane fought valiantly but Mark's first serve actually went in for once to take the 3rd set 6-2 and preserving Mike and Mark's 50% win ratio in league matches. Hopefully see you in the spring if Mike isn't broken from marathon training."  -- Mark
Reveal CommentTim Husain & Yo Sato bt Thomas Mees & Amy Ruff (Nov 17) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Yo put on a brave face and battled through despite a recent bereavement. Amy and Tom started quickly off the blocks and things were pretty even until Tom's eagerness resulted in a nasty slip on the court's morning dew. He fought bravely through and Amy served some brilliant aces down the line. The match was far more even than the final result suggests and fun was had by all. With a little bit of time left over we even managed to mix up and play a couple of championship tie-breaks for fun. Thanks for a great morning everyone and good luck for the rest of the rounds."  -- Tim
Reveal CommentMark Hassall & Michael Wright bt Gareth Jones & Jane Hansen (Nov 14) 4-6, 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A very enjoyable, if cold, evening of tennis. Gareth and Jane came flying out of the blocks to take a 3-0 lead, with Gareth's slicey serve in particular totally baffling Mark and I. We pulled it back, but Gareth and Jane rallied and took the set. Mark and I managed to put a few games together, and a few extremely points off the net, took the second set. After a brief interlude where Jane tended to a cut finger (who knew tennis was so violent?), Mark and I worked out how to return the slice serve and took the final set with hypothermia setting in. Some lucky shots made this luck more comfortable than it was. Thanks for some fun evening tennis, and hopefully see you for a rematch in 2020."  -- Michael

  • "Glad we managed to finish the match as it was in doubt due to weather, and it did look doomed as rain started just before the scheduled time. Mercifully rain relented and we had an enjoyable game, if with a really heavy splashing ball. Thanks Mark and Mike"  -- Yo
Reveal CommentThomas Mees & Amy Ruff bt Mark Hassall & Michael Wright (Oct 27) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Another close game with Tom and Amy, some good rallies and plenty of the now obligatory titanic deuce games providing good service practice for everyone. Tom's rocket-like backhand proved the key, with proceedings only briefly interrupted by a small boy dressed as a dinosaur who still seemed to be better than anyone there that day. Time to change the orange shirts perhaps?"  -- Mark
Reveal CommentMark Hassall & Michael Wright bt Kristin Ursell & John Ursell (Oct 26) 6-2, 7-6 (7-3)

Player Comments:

  • "In a match of many twists and turns, ups and downs, back and forths, swings and roundabouts etc etc, Mike and Mark came flying out the blocks to go 4-0 up in the 1st set, closing it out 6-2. Kristin and John hit their own purple patch (although their shirts were blue), going 5-0 up on the 2nd. Somehow finding a 2nd wind (fuelled by Coco Pops), the set was levelled at 5-5 then duly proceeded to a tie-break. Helpfully instructed by John and Kristin (as we have little idea how tie-breaks work), Mark and Mike carried the momentum to take it 7-3. Happily missed the rain, but unhappily only a few games went to duece rather than the usual 12 to 15. Well played everyone, especially John's on fire serve."  -- Mark

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentKristin Ursell & John Ursell bt Thomas Mees & Amy Ruff (Oct 6) 3-6, 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "We were expecting a close match, as we've played each other before, and we weren't disappointed. Tom was slightly handicapped from the start after he cut his hand whilst opening the new tennis balls, then suffered further injury trying a Boris-style slide to retrieve a ball. Undeterred, he and Amy won the first set 6-3. The second set was tightly contested with the wind adding another dimension to the game, but we managed to level the match. After coming back from 2-5 down in the third set, Amy and Tom continued to play some great shots (including 2 aces from Amy) and eventually we managed to win the final game with some fine net play from John. A very enjoyable match in unexpected sunshine."  -- Kristin

  • "Mark and Mike turned up in matching orange tops and bandanas with all the chat - it felt like we were playing the Bryan Bros!! Lots of deuces but in the end Jenny’s cross court backhand got us the edge and we managed to secure our 2nd win of the day "  -- Kate
