Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • We have doubles and singles rounds!
  • Players/teams are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • The league is mixed sex, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • In doubles teams may be any combination of gender
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also available on the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Collapse AllWimbledon Park Singles - Round 49 | Thursday 8 August 2019 to Wednesday 2 October 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 4 September 2019)

Nearly 70% of matches were played in this sometimes scorching summer round. It was a great achievement especially as we know all about the challenges of booking the courts this time. Thank you so much for your continuing support of grass-roots tennis!

Group Summary:

Tom turned his match around against Lukasz so it is a shame he couldn't have done the same for his round as a whole! A few more matches could have seen him challenge for the top spot. As it was, it was left to Tamas and Oliver to chase down Lukasz, but though both earned their bonus points, they couldn't get close to the winner's impressive points tally. Well done Lukasz and well done Oliver for earning second place (by a sliver of a better record of conceded sets and games).

Final Rankings:

  1. Lukasz Klobukowski [W4, L1] 11 includes 2 bonus points WINNER
  2. Oliver Wedlake [W2, L1] 6 includes 2 bonus points RUNNER UP

Group Summary:

Alex Kitchener - your group needed you! Indeed if Alex had played even one match and had that match been with Jon G (who played more matches than anyone else this round) Jon could have caught Joshua at the top of the table. As it is, though Jon beat Josh in a dramatic head-to-head, without the support of bonus points, he is denied the trophy! An exciting group full of good tennis and a winner and runner up who both deserve our praise.

Group Summary:

What a shame we didn't see the match between Martin and Michael - it should, by rights, have been the group decider. Player Comments:

  • "Played on a slippery post-rain surface, this was an intense and competitive match. Alfie's fast serves and razor-sharp angled shots asked for greater focus and some strategic adjustments on my part to be countered - fortunately I was able to find good footing after a wobbly start in both sets. Thanks Alfie for a great match!"  -- Filippo

Reveal CommentMichael Rossiter bt Babak Semino (Sep 20) 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "I started off well and Babak struggled with his serve and consistency in the 1st set. I went a break up at the start of the 2nd set and then Babak started to serve better and he played better. He broke me back to get to 4-4 and I managed to serve to stay in the set at 4-5 before breaking him in a close game and then serving out. It was an enjoyable match in the late summer sun. "  -- Michael
Reveal CommentFilippo Conz bt Babak Semino (Sep 15) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Tom just returned to tennis after several years, so he was understandably a bit rusty. I navigated through the first set with relative ease, but the second set was a totally different story. The serve deserted both of us, and we kept being broken. The first 10 games all went against the server. I managed to achieve the only service hold to go up 6-5, after which I broke Tom's serve one final time to wrap up the match."  -- Alfie

Player Comments:

  • "Very close match - 2 hours was not even enough to finish two sets. To be continued (Babak to serve at 4-5)."  -- Alfie
  • "A very close match played over two separate dates. Alfie played well and kept his nerve to finish off the second set but the third set didn't go his way today with unforced errors and double faults. Being a good sport still stayed on to play a friendly doubles game after. Good Luck with your next match Alfie and thanks for the games," -- Babak

  • "Lovely Sunny but Humid day , good all round tennis from both of us, having had a previous sporting activity on the day legs were all tired up but we managed 3 sets. First set was all Joe and he controlled it well with accurate lobs and passing shots, second set was tight but lucky net call shots went my way and we were all square, third set followed with few more lucky net calls and shots for me and momentum changed. close match, well played Joe and good luck with your next game."  -- Babak

Group Summary:

14 wins and 31 points were shared between the top three players in Group 4 which gives you some idea how close this contest was. It went Delano's way but in quite unlikely circumstances. For a start, it was runner up John who earned his bonus points, then third placed Matt inflicted the only defeat on Delano. But Delano's consistent tennis proved crucial and the set he took off Matt generated the extra point he needed to stay ahead. Terrific tennis everyone.

Match Results:

Reveal CommentDelano Williams bt Simon Harrison (Sep 29) 7-6 (7-3), 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "The first set was extremely close with every point being hard fought. Simon played some great tennis, hitting the ball hard and accurately. Fortunately I managed to match him shot for shot in what turned out to be the battle of the ground strokes in the end first set, which was edged in a tie break. The second set started of in the same fashion with both of us going for our shots with no inhibitions. The set just ran away from Simon in the end, but to be honest it never felt comfortable even when serving at 4:2, 40:0. In fact Simon won four points in a row but somehow I managed to hold to take a 5:2 lead. With a break needed to win the match I managed to close and take the win. Good luck Simon for the rest of the round "  -- Delano

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyed playing against Charlie. In the first set he was hampered by an elbow injury which explains the score-line . The second set was a completely different story as Charlie’s serve did a lot of damage and his forehand came back to him. I was very glad to pip the second set as I could tell he was improving by the game and my serve seemed to disappearing at the same rate. . My worry was proved right in a friendly third set which he won. Really enjoyable match and always good to meet a fellow rugby fan so there was plenty to chat about at changeovers. Thanks mate and best of luck with your remaining matches. "  -- Ian
Reveal CommentIan Dunn bt Ken Lewis (Sep 4) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "An absolute pleasure to play against Ken. A great quality tennis match with some thrilling points. Ken was up 3-0 in the first and a similar story in the second. However, I had a couple of shocking net cords go my way at clutch times. Add that to great sportsmanship from Ken when he gave me the benefit of a key 50/50 call and it meant I managed to get some momentum going. I was very happy to close out the second set as each one of my service games had gone to multiple deuces. Thanks for a hugely enjoyable game Ken and best of luck with your remaining matches."  -- Ian

The second set started in a similar fashion. However, with Alex serving at 1-2 there were four successive breaks; every time I edged ahead, Alex broke back eventually levelling at 4-4. An all important 9 game ensued with some epic rallies; I was just able to hold, and then snuck a break to take the match. "  -- Philip

Group Summary:

Ben came into the group with a winner's mentality (he had been a group winner last time) and managed to keep his nose ahead in the points chase despite fierce competition from Lucio. Ben played one more match and crucially earned his bonus points which means that Lucia couldn't capitalise on beating Ben in their match. Well done everyone in a busy, competitve group.

The first set was very tight with Phil clawing his way back from 0-3 to 4-4 before I got ahead again. Phil’s swerving serve was devastating when it worked but mercifully he didn’t really get into his groove and I benefited from a number of double faults and a few random drop shots/mis-hits of my own. Though feeling tired, playing these catch-up matches in quick succession has really helped me get back in the swing after over a month away from the game. Group Summary:

If you are going to get beaten in Local Tennis Leagues, go down fighting. That is the lesson from this group where Will and Andrew were pretty much neck and neck in the race to the top, but neither could keep a completely unblemished record and conceded a match each. Will was actually beaten by Andrew but salvaged a point from the three-setter. And that, you will have guessed, was just enough to allow him to claim the group win! Leila earns a commendable bronze.

Jenny had definitely warmed up during the second set and her backhand was a great weapon along with her serves all to my backhand. Into the third with a set each, we were both determined to be the winner so much so that i had played high risk shots which saw me 5-2 down and save 3/4 match points. On the start of the 2nd set, the heavens opened up and play was paused for about 40 minutes as we were determined and enthusiastic enough to wait and get the game completed. I was a little slow to adapt to the heavier balls and slightly water logged court unlike Javier who took the second set. Reveal CommentMorgan Parry bt Don McGill (Sep 2) 6-2, 7-6 (7-3)

Player Comments:

  • "This was a great battle, especially in the second set, and I was very glad that it didn't go to a third - I didn't have much left in the tank and I think the match would probably have gone the other way had Don taken the tie break. The second set was very competitive and swung back and forth a few times: Don nearly took it at 5-4, I had a chance at 6-5, before finally it went to the tie break. Best of luck in the remaining games."  -- Morgan
Reveal CommentDon McGill bt William Knight (Aug 31) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "I knew I had to bring my A-game today after losing to Will in a previous round, I even went to bed early and it seems to have paid off! Great match... thanks Will and good luck with the rest of the round. D "  -- Don
Reveal CommentIsobel Stephen bt Cath Murray (Aug 31) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Really fun match with just a short break for a downpour 😊 Lots of great rallies and a real pleasure to play with Cath. Good luck with the rest of your matches. "  -- Isobel
Reveal CommentMorgan Parry bt Kate Marsh (Aug 29) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A close match, particularly in the second set which reached 5-5, after a seemingly safe 5-2 lead was quickly wiped out by Kate. She ruthlessly punished the weaker parts of my game with topspin-heavy forehands and this turned into quite a work-out. And despite being aware that she was coming armed with a strong serve, the second serve ace somewhere around halfway was still quite unexpected! Best of luck with the remaining matches."  -- Morgan
Reveal CommentMorgan Parry bt Isobel Stephen (Aug 27) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Great game played in excellent spirits, despite the punishing heat! There was certainly quite an advantage to the end with the baseline in the shade this evening. Best of luck with the rest of the league."  -- Morgan

  • "Surely one of the hottest days of the summer to be playing tennis. We had some great rallies Cath runs for absolutely everything inspite of the heat -good luck with the rest of the round and thank you for an enjoyable game Kate"  -- Kate
Reveal CommentWilliam Knight bt Cath Murray (Aug 25) 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Very hot conditions for this one, especially tough on the south facing side of the court, and as the temperature rose the games got closer and the rallies got longer. A really enjoyable game but I'm glad to have avoided a third set!"  -- William
Reveal CommentMorgan Parry bt Cath Murray (Aug 24) 6-4, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A fun game played in absolutely sweltering conditions. I think the second set score didn't reflect our game at all, because the first was very close throughout and Cath certainly had me chasing plenty of good backhand returns. The second set also featured the most ridiculous net point I think I've ever seen, where the ball managed to roll across the top of the net for probably a foot, before dropping over Cath's side. Luck clearly not on her side on this occasion!"  -- Morgan
Reveal CommentDon McGill bt Kate Marsh (Aug 20) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "As always a great match against Kate! A real tussle with both players going for their shots and trying to outsmart the other with some tactical playing. I was lucky to get the break at 5-6 in the second thus avoiding a tiebreak and possibly a third set that would have probably done me in. Thanks Kate and best of the luck with the rest of the round. D "  -- Don

Player Comments:

  • "We were expecting a close match, as we've played each other before, and we weren't disappointed. Tom was slightly handicapped from the start after he cut his hand whilst opening the new tennis balls, then suffered further injury trying a Boris-style slide to retrieve a ball. Undeterred, he and Amy won the first set 6-3. The second set was tightly contested with the wind adding another dimension to the game, but we managed to level the match. After coming back from 2-5 down in the third set, Amy and Tom continued to play some great shots (including 2 aces from Amy) and eventually we managed to win the final game with some fine net play from John. A very enjoyable match in unexpected sunshine."  -- Kristin
