Collapse AllWimbledon Park Doubles - Round 24 | Thursday 20 June 2019 to Wednesday 28 August 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 24 July 2019)

70% of all possible matches were played in this round of doubles, which is fantastic. We know how difficult it is to get 4 people on to the same court at the same time so many thanks for all your effort and commitment. And what matches they were! So lovely to read so many great match reports. Made us really want to get out and play, so many thanks!

Group Summary:

Wow, what a great group! Such close matches and so much drama. Sorry to hear of Joe's fall and very glad to hear you are ok. No bonus points were awarded and the final points showed how tight it was with Babak and Julian and Tim C and Nigel on 5 points each and Elizabeth and Natalia and Tim D and Philip on 4 each. It is the kind of score which sends us scuttling into the stacks to retrieve the mighty handbook on how to resolve a tie. In this case, it comes down to sets conceded per matches played which means we declare Babak & Julian the winners with Tim C & Nigel runners up. Well played all!

Player Comments:

  • "Sadly Joe fell and hit his head towards the end of the first set, and after taking some time out had to serve to stay in the set . We won the set and he felt that he could not continue . Thankfully after a check up at the hospital all was well. It was a shame that this happened as the match was shaping up to be a very close encounter . We all won our first service games and then I lost mine and we shortly found ourselves down 2- 4 but we managed to break back and take the set. Looking forward to another match minus injuries . • "In spite of a showery day the rain cleared and it turned out to be a great evening for tennis, although a little damp. It was a really fun game with some excellent serving from Joe (how many aces ?) and some great pick ups and volleys from Di, A very enjoyable game and closer than the score looks. Thanks Di and Joe and good luck for the rest of your matches. "  -- Nigel

  • "Thank you gentlemen for a great evening of tennis. A close match which as Tim described was a sea saw Natalia and I were 3 -1 down in the first set and came back to push it to a tie break which we won. The second set was matched game for game but the boys came through in the tie break. The third set was hard fought but we managed to break a few crucial services to take the match. What an evening Thank you "  -- Elizabeth

Player Comments:

  • "Well , a humdinger of a match on a sweltering evening with blinding sun at one end. We took the first set fairly easily , but that was just the preface for what turned out to be a match full of great points and momentum swings . Nigel and Tim turned the second set around to win it and then did the same in the third when we were ahead with a service break. At 5/3 down we broke back with the light fading and the park bell ringing . I then had to serve to keep us in the match - nothing like pressure to focus you on that yellow fluffy thing ! Thanks for a wonderful encounter - to be continued ........ Tim."  -- Tim

Player Comments:

  • "A very very enjoyable match on a sunny and hot Sunday morning. 4-0 up in the first was rapidly reversed and we sneaked a 6-4 first set. More of the same as we win the second set but the real story was some top draw volleying all round and some strong points where high quality shots were needed to win points some outrageous play kept the match in the balance until the very end. Keen to do it again as it was a great match up. Good luck in your next game chaps and look forward to getting out on court again soon! Julian"  -- Julian

  • "It was a great pleasure to play Elizabeth and Natalia this evening. They came out with all guns blazing and serves, volleys, forehands and back hands hitting the mark in all directions. They breezed through the first set, winning it 6-1, before Tim and I had woken up. We eventually warmed up and won the next 2 sets 6-3, 6-2. The game remained fun, competitive and good humoured throughout with some great rallies and rattling volleys. Thank you Elizabeth and Natalia and good luck for your upcoming matches."  -- Nigel

Group Summary:

Well done Jane and Angela! Five matches played, four of them won + bonus points = gold in this group! A great effort in a well fought round. Kudos to Anthony & Jeff for beating the champs -'it was great to leave the best match till last' said Jane and well done to runners up Kristin and John. Thanks for all the lovely match commentaries: we particular like the sound of the 'intrepid Ms' (Mark and Michael) in matching orange shirts and black shorts and such close score lines - 1-6, 7-6 (9-7), [10-3] between Anthony & Jeff and Thomas & Amy for example.

Player Comments:

  • "After a 15 minute first game, it looked like another war of attrition was in the offing. Luckily it proved not to be the case and became quite aggressive after that, with Anthony and Jeff's dominant (and sometimes terrifying) serve game being countered with some kamikaze net play and the odd Mike Silice to add a bit of flair. Would not be surprised to see a reversal if there was a rematch."  -- Mark

Player Comments:

  • "A 2 set 2 hour evening match that truly had a bit of everything. The first set was closely fought the whole way through, with numerous lengthy deuce situations (one game I'm quite certain was in double figures of deuce!). After more than an hour we managed to secure a break to take a set lead. Mark and Mike fired back immediately to go 3-1 up, the rallies were notably more intense with every ball being chased down. We battled back to end up again at 5-5, fatigue setting in on both sides of the net. With only 5 minutes left I think we all expected to be playing a day 2, but we managed to scrape the last 2 games before the lights went out. Thank you both for an excellent and hard fought match that really could've gone either way."  -- Thomas

Player Comments:

  • "A thoroughly entertaining match of endless deuce points, a pulled back, a couple of slips and one serve to the side of the head. Kristin and John pulled ahead in the first set, but Mark and I pulled it back to win the first set, and held the lead in the second set aided by more than a couple lucky shots. This was a second fun match in successive rounds. Hope to see you next time. Mike"  -- Michael

Player Comments:

  • "A wonderful exciting, exhausting match against a formidable and delightful couple lasting 2.5 hours on a sunny windy afternoon. Amy and Tom took the first set comfortably, Amy at the net was flawless and Tom’s serve was incredibly strong and tricky to return. The second set went to a long tie break which Angela and I managed to secure 14-12! Even the 3rd set was tricky but I think we were becoming a bit more focussed. Good luck Amy and Tom and thanks for a most memorable - and best league match - we have ever played. Jane"  -- Jane

  • "Let’s hope the tennis at Wimbledon today will be as much fun and as competitive as our match against Mike and Mark. Angela and I found ourselves 4-0 up in first set, but the intrepid M’s in their matching orange shirts and black shorts soon came back to even things up, we held our nerve and got the set. The second set was even more exciting with killer serves from the M’s and I had to serve out the last game, which had numerous deuces in it, but we won in the end. Wonderful exchanges at the net and great fun. Thanks Mike and Mark and good luck for your upcoming matches. Jane"  -- Jane
