An excellent winter round in Wimbledon Park with more than 70% of matches played and a great show of sportsmanship too. Thanks for the many comments which provided us with the story of the round and for all your efforts to get on court. Here's to more of the same throughout 2019!

Group Summary:

Kevin had a near miss with top spot in the last round so was determined to go one better this time, playing and winning all three of the matches he played to add the group one title to his name. Andrea also finished undefeated, but having played one fewer match than Kevin, the former champ comes home in second. Hats off to Federico for earning his bonus prize with some terrific scheduling.

Ryan and John gave the new champ a real run for his money in their thrilling three setter head to heads. Joe impressively played every match and bagged bonus points and thanks to a trio of victories he is rewarded for his efforts with the silver. Well done to Alfie too who also got on court against all of his opponents.

There were many competitive and enjoyable matches described in the comments in group three - well played everyone. Vladimir didn't let the "freezing conditions" affect his game, as he ground out five wins, including an epic against James, to pull clear in first place. James added three victories to his tally to pip Delano to the runner up spot. A shame to see Simon withdraw - hope you're on the mend soon.

This time we both found the damp surface tricky with fast balls skidding off low. More consistent serving and fewer wild ground strokes helped me stay ahead in the 1st but Pippa took a 4-2 lead in the 2nd, placing the ball to ensure I didn’t succumb to the flood-lit evening chill. I tried to regain the initiative with some more aggressive hitting and got on a roll though it could easily have gone to a third set with the score at 4-5. Player Comments:

  • "Brendan connected well quickly and took an early lead. This made it and uphill battle from the beginning. Fortunately I went on a hot streak and was able to pip him to the set. The second was as close right up to the final two games which I was able to win after two very long deuce games. Very enjoyable game, we both had to adapt to the adverse windy weather conditions which seemed to begin and end sporadically. Thanks for the game Brendan."  -- Jumaane

Reveal CommentJumaane Camero bt Kate Marsh (Jan 6) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Great game which I found I started well as I was well warmed up, this allowed me to get an early break and take the first set. Once Kate began to find her rhythm I struggled to find an answer to some of the great shots she was producing especially when she got her first serve in. The second set could have gone either way, fortunately my drop shots were getting over the net which I think helped me clinch the second. Thanks again Kate!"  -- Jumaane
Reveal CommentBrendan Mulcahy bt Kate Marsh (Jan 4) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Kate and I always have competitive matches and this one was well-fought in friendly fashion, though we agreed it wasn't vintage. The low sun on a beautiful morning meant that eight of the first nine games were won from the shaded end. Thereafter we adapted better and though it was a two-setter, we were on court for over 90 minutes. Cheers, Kate. Till our next encounter . . ."  -- Brendan

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable match against Brendan where the wind played its part on a very gusty morning. Close first set in which Brendan got an early break but I managed to break back and go on to win the first set. As the match went on I got wiser to Brendan's drop shots and was quicker to the net which helped to make it a win for me and now 1:1 in our mini-series! All the very best for the rest of your matches Brendan and look forward to a re-match"  -- Rachel

Reveal CommentJavier Garcia bt Isobel Stephen (Jan 27) 7-6 (7-2), 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Isobel and I only appear to play when Mother Nature is in a grump... a combination of very blustery conditions with wind playing havoc with attempting regulation shots and a low sun at one end meant another cacophonous encounter between us (but not as loud as the guy a couple of courts away!!?). A very even first set which lasted an hour which could have gone either way - some thoroughly enjoyable rallies & very few double faults from either of us despite the howling winds. The second set was all about staying consistent and I was fortunate to have come through it unscathed - Great to play again and 6-0 is in no way a reflection of your skills. Both your forehand and backhand are a very powerful weapons!"  -- Javier
