Collapse AllWimbledon Park Singles - Round 48 | Thursday 23 May 2019 to Wednesday 17 July 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 19 June 2019)

At the Wimbledon Championships this year 675 matches were played, but you played 217 league matches which is pretty good going! 66% of all the available matches were completed so thank you for all your hard work scheduling and getting on court. We can't crown new Men's and Women's Champions but we do have 12 group winners to congratulate! Here's to the next round - hope you can play.

Group Summary:

Now, Flavio may have won top groups before, but not (we think) the Wimbledon Park top group, so this will no doubt be a welcome addition to the trophy cabinet. Tom almost upset Flavio's campaign by winning their tight three-setter, but the momentum was with Flavio and in the end he finished a couple of points clear of runner-up Lasha, In a very competitive round, a nod too to Lukasz who matched the champ on overall wins and earns a well-deserved bronze. Well played all!

Group Summary:

If you were just to look at the scores you might think winning the group was a bit of a stroll in the park for Ben, but as he pointed out in his match with Giovanni, Ben was actually "pushed right to the line." Nevertheless, this was an extremely impressive result for the Wimbledon Parks league newcomer and it will be great to see how Ben fares in the top group! Overall the group was a little light on matches but Carlos made good use of the matches he could get scheduled to earn a very creditable silver.

Group Summary:

Bart may have enjoyed an unbroken run of six wins this round, but he certainly had to work for them. Joshua stole a set off him and several matches included 7-5 sets including the match with eventual runner-up J Schwan. We don't have a commentary to bring this particular match to life, but with J Schwan with five wins of his own in the round, this was the effective group decider. Well done to Bart our new champ, and to J Schwan on his silver! All but a handful of matches weren't played in this busy and skillful group and hats off to you all for that.

Group Summary:

Tied on eleven points each, it came down to the head-to-head between Sam and Joe. Appropriately, it was a "great match" with a tiebreak second set, but Sam prevailed! So that means, fittingly enough for his unbeaten run, a group win for Sam. It was a very competitive group with plenty of possibilities of upsets. Vikranth for instance may not have won a match this time, but he was the only player to take a set off the new champ. Well played all.

Group Summary:

Jon made it back to back group wins with an excellent display of determined tennis., especially when it came to overcoming the threat of runner up Delano. That match went to three sets and was an important win as playing without bonus points, Jon could still, mathematically at least, be caught. But this was a great display of league tennis and Jon's six wins proved more than good enough to win the group. Well done all and thanks for the commentaries - everyone pitched in!

Thankfully my defensive game was working and I managed to stay ahead in the match. One game will remain in my mind at 5:5 serving to go ahead in the set there was at least four deuce points!! I managed to hold and break and win the match. Thanks Trevor for a great game, I really enjoyed it, good luck for the rest of the round"  -- Delano

Player Comments:

  • "Trevor started off very well while I just about managed to hang in there for the first few games. A crucial point may have been the 7th game, where at 3-3 and my serve there were about 10 deuces and I eventually won it. After that Trevor lost a bit of his earlier consistency and I managed to win the remaining games in the first set. The second set continued in similar fashion and I won it basically due to being more consistent. Trevor has come back from a couple of years' break, so quite likely there will be a different result next time we play!"  -- Jon

All three sets I had to come from behind with Will dominating early on in each one. Fortunately with a bit of luck and some hard fought points I managed to come back in the first and last set to win by the narrowest of margins. By the end of the match it's safe to say we were both exhausted but it was great fun and worth the effort. Good luck for the rest of the round Will"  -- Delano

  • "This was a very tough and enjoyable match with lots of ups and downs. We kept breaking each others' serves. I lost numerous set balls in the first set and Delano came back and won a tight tiebreak. Then in the second set my serve improved a bit, which probably was what gave me the edge, but the scoreline is too flattering. In the third set, Delano started off very well, but I somehow managed to get back in it and only after lots of hard-fought deuces I edged it. "  -- Jon

We had one withdrawal of course, but this was still a rather quiet group with some key matches that couldn't be scheduled. It was then, very much a case of who plays wins, and Mitchell mitigated a loss to Vsevolod by playing one more match overall and grabbing bonus points. In the end it was Alex who came closest to catching the new Champ and Vsevolod had to settle for the bronze.

  • "Closely fought contest. Key moment in the first set 5-3 down and a backhand passing shot landed on the very edge of the line. That meant I had enough confidence to win the set. Second set similar pattern as the first, except my level dropped and Tom played better than me. Well deserved second set. We were short of time so we agreed to play a Match Tiebreak, which couldn't have been closer. Tom had the lead 8-4 but I got to 9-8 me, then some ups and downs, until finally I won on another match point 14-12. Thanks for the game, and your part played in it. Could have gone either way. Full marks to Phillip for keeping up the pressure in the race for points. By playing one more match than his rivals and by earning his bonus points Philip drew the table! So the group is decided on the players' head-to-head and here it was Ian enjoying the happy returns: "Always great to play against Phil. Friendly and competitive. It was my birthday so I think he took it easy on me." Looks like a great group to have played in!

Player Comments:

  • "A tight contest with some epic points and games. Lucio was a break up in the first set at 4-2 when I was finally able to make inroads into his serve and fight back to take it 6-4. In the second set I was able to get a break ahead only for Lucio to start smashing down aces and hitting line winners. At 5-2 we had a mammoth game lasting over 15 minutes, I was very glad to break to win the match. I wouldn’t have fancied serving for it after that. "  -- Philip

  • "It was good to squeeze in a final match before the end of the round and great fun to play Basak. A return to her full on-court form cannot be far away now as every time I tried to inject extra pace, she belted the ball back with interest! The score belies the the many extended deuce games with the midday sun definitely a factor, serving from the pavilion end. Competitive, with some great rallies and passing shots from both players, thanks Basak!"  -- Peter

  • "Great all-welsh tussle with Ben. Well over 2 hours. He’s got great court coverage and gets to everything. Really friendly but competitive match and I was very pleased to get over the line in what was a ridiculously tight championship tie-break (never more than 2 points in it all the way through). Thanks for the match and best of luck in your remaining matches. "  -- Ian
Reveal CommentPhilip James bt Ben Tootill (Jul 6) 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A really friendly and enjoyable match played on a very hot day. I started well and it took Ben a while to shake of the rust in the first set, which was closer than the score implies. Ben started really well in the second racing to a 4-1 lead. I was able to up my game and fight back though there was a crucial game as I served at *3-4 where Ben had three break points at 0-40. I was able to hold on, in part thanks to a sky high defensive lob, and a frame shot which also hit the net cord and dribbled over. Holding on was key and I was eventually able to seal the 2nd set. A fun game in a great spirit."  -- Philip
Reveal CommentPeter Roberts bt Oliver Popham (Jul 3) 5-7, 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A very close match with a lot of wayward stuff from me early on. Clawing my way back from 1-4 to 5-5 in the First wasn’t enough to stop Oliver forging ahead. With some steadier play the match ten continued very evenly despite a lot of distractions around us and setting din making things difficult for the facing player, until it finally disappeared behind the pavvy. I again came back from 1-3 in the 3rd but it was neck and neck all the way, with some nice rallies amongst the predictable dross. When I did up my strokes it was noticeable that shots were returned with interest so we had some good exchanges at the baseline and around the net. A relief to have snatched a win when when it very nearly went the other way."  -- Peter
Reveal CommentIan Dunn bt Lucio Lauria (Jul 3) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyed meeting and playing against Lucio. I’ve played in these leagues for a couple of years and he has the fastest serve I’ve faced. I couldn’t do anything against his first serve. At 5-3 down in the first set I thought I’d be lucky to get a point out of this match. However, momentum swung my way and i came out the winner. The score does not reflect the amount of deuce games we had (pretty much all went to deuce). Lucio will get better and better and I wouldn’t fancy my chances if we meet again. Thanks Lucio and best of luck in the rest of your matches. "  -- Ian
Reveal CommentIan Dunn bt Basak Alhan Aydin (Jun 30) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "So nice to play against Basak. You can tell that she was a really high quality player who is now returning to singles. We played 16 games in all and I think 12 went to deuce. Therefore the final score doesn’t reflect what a tight match it was. It’s always nice to play someone with all the shots and who plays tennis in the right way. Thanks Basak and best of luck with the rest of your matches."  -- Ian
Reveal CommentIan Dunn bt Peter Roberts (Jun 23) 7-5, 4-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Really good match. 2hrs 30 mins. Glad I brought almost 3 litres of water. Pete is strong mentally and really steps it up when he is behind. Once he won the 2nd set I thought I would be on the losing side come the end. However, got into a quick 4-0 lead in the decider and then managed to scrape over the line. Thanks for the great match Pete and look forward to playing you again sometime. "  -- Ian
Reveal CommentPeter Roberts bt Lucio Lauria (Jun 17) 6-4, 2-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Close encounter this early evening with Lucio, coming back to tennis after an extended sabbatical . But my goodness, when all the serves and ground strokes start going in consistently it will be a very different score line. As it was, I managed to put Lucio under a little pressure on one of my stronger serving days, while his serve, devastating when in, was less consistent. The rallies were very even affairs with both of us scurrying around and retrieving quite effectively. Clay shoes on the astroturf a definite advantage in a few points. The sinking feeling I had when Lucio squared it at one set each extended well into the third set so I was surprised to find myself 3-1 up and then rallied to close it out just before our time was up."  -- Peter

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentPhilip James bt Peter Roberts (May 28) 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A really close match that lasted 2.5 hrs, enduring rain breaks, court changes and very blustery conditions The first set was level pegging with Peter going up a break first, and then me pulling it back and serving for the set at 5-4. Peter broke back at a crucial time and carried the advantage in to the tie break that he played really well in and deservedly won. The 2nd set followed a similar pattern and again I came from a break down but this time I was able to secure the set. At the start of the third I hit a rich vein of form and was able to break twice to take a healthy lead. However Peter then started going for it all, hitting lines and winners to get a break back and close the gap. Thankfully I was just able to hold on. "  -- Philip
Ben Tootill bt Lucio Lauria (May 27) 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, [10-8]

Group Summary:

It really doesn't get much closer than this and none of the top three could establish a winning record against both of the others. As a result it wasn't the player with the most number of wins (Tomas) who grabbed the group or even the player (Christopher) who beat Alex in their head-to-head! In the end, as Alex and Thomas tied on top with 12 points a piece it's their match-up that decides the group which means Alex is by the narrowest of margins, champ this time! Great commentaries really brings the group to life.

Group Summary:

Our #mixittennis campaign would be proud of this group: nip and tuck tennis between four men and four women all played in the best possible spirit. Indeed, all but a couple of the matches got played and that made the group doubly exciting. Despite losing a thriller to Louise, Michael kept his nerve to prevail in the group finishing just ahead of runner-up Rachel. With Phillip, Jennifer and Louise all tied on eleven points, third place was also hotly contested (just nabbed by Philip) so we look forward to some of these rivalries to be continued in future rounds. Great tennis everyone!

Group Summary:

Phil was the only player (aside from Dom) able to complete a full house of matches and that gave him a little leeway at the top of the group. In the end he didn't need the extra points as though Danielle had beaten him in their match her campaign got stuck on won three, lost one. A little bit of bad luck and ankle issues prevented Javier getting closer to the champ's points tally but hopefully he won't be too disappointed with his silver this time. Meanwhile Jenny won the battle with Don for third place but neither had quite the firepower to challenge the leader this time. All in all though an excellent group with some real quality tennis and well-deserved win for Phil!

Group Summary:

Newcomer to the league, Ben made quite an impression and is, we suspect, destined to rise quickly up the groups. We don't have commentaries from Ben this time, but if he hasn't yet found his tennis voice he has certainly found his tennis feet! In a another round Isobel could easily have won the group with her four match wins but as it is, well done for storming the silver! Here's to the next round.
