Collapse AllWimbledon Park Singles - Round 50 | Thursday 24 October 2019 to Wednesday 18 December 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 20 November 2019)

66 players, 9 groups and 138 matches played or 66% of the total possible. That is a great result and well played all. There were unfortunately one or two players who didn't get going - please let us know what we can do another time - and the occasional episodes of tennis on ice, but overall this was a great effort at a difficult time of year. Many thanks to all.

Group Summary:

Tamas moves from 3rd place last time to 2nd this time and J from 5th place to 3rd. But it is Keir who tops the group. There was just one point between him and Tamas and Tamas won the head to head (well played!) and was also undefeated this round. But the point Keir won for the set he got in the match v Tamas made all the difference in the final analysis! Congratulations to both!

No bonus points here but who needs them when the tennis is as close as this. There were so many good and friendly matches here it was hard to choose between them but there can only be one winner and Matt judged edged ahead by one point. Congratulations! Jon, Peter and Philip all tied on points in the chasing pack. Based on fewest sets conceded per matches played, Peter just takes silver (and also beat the champ!). Very well played all!

Reveal CommentPhilip James bt Jon Rutter (Dec 10) 6-7 (7-9), 6-3 (7-6), 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A fantastic contest over 2 days, 3.5 hours. V. enjoyable and great sportsmanship Only 1 hold of serve each in the 1st set as return of serve dominated. The tie break which was equally close but Jon stayed strong to win it I was able to up my game to lead *2-5 in 2nd set when our time ended. We returned 2 weeks later and Jon held from 15-40 to make me serve for it, which thankfully I did! In the 3rd set I hit some form to lead 2-5* Jon then won 4 consecutive games and was in the ascendancy. I was able to dig in to force a tie break, then eked a lead to 3-6* True to the match, Jon saved both match points on my serve but mercifully I was able to take the last on Jon’s serve," -- Philip
Reveal CommentJon Rutter bt John Moyna (Dec 8) 7-5, 2-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "great 3 set match with plenty of changes in momentum. the gusting wind made serving tricky and there were plenty of breaks, but it made for an exciting game. good chatting with John between ends too. looking forward to the rematch!"  -- Jon
Reveal CommentPhilip James bt Ian Dunn (Dec 7) 2-6, 6-2, [11-9]

Player Comments:

  • "Always a pleasure to play Ian and great for me to finally get a win in our third head to head! The match started with us both playing well and aggressively but I then dipped slightly as Ian hit his stride and raced away with the first set 6-2. I didn’t hold much hope for set two but I managed to improve a bit and get a toe hold. Meanwhile Ian’s struggled with his serve allowing me to take the second set. Due to time, we decided to play a champions tie break which was neck and neck, both saving match points before I was able to take it 11-9. A really enjoyable and friendly match. "  -- Philip

Reveal CommentPeter Roberts bt Ian Dunn (Nov 30) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "It’s been a while since Ian and I last faced each other in the League. This time I retrieved some honour but in fairness, Ian was a bit rusty after 2 months away from the courts so will need another match to blow out the cobwebs and get his big serve going more consistently. I was also helped by innumerable mid-hits, most of which went in! Thanks, Ian look forward to our next match! "  -- Peter
Reveal CommentPeter Roberts bt Matt Dawkins (Nov 25) 2-6, 6-4, [10-5]

Player Comments:

  • "Good to fit in this match on the dullest and dampest of days, when our evening match looked a non-starter until an hour before. But Wimbledon Park’s all- weather court proved yet again that there is no limit to rain they can cope with and Matt and I had a highly competitive match with some strong serving from both players. In spite of this and some very long deuce games I couldn’t stop Matt breaking me twice in the first with good directional play. The second set was nip and tuck to 4-all, before I broke Matt and wrapped up the set. I must say that Matt was very generous in giving me at least a few points where he was surer than I was that his shot was out. Matt took an early lead in the tie-beak but all too quick the lead was reversed! "  -- Peter
Reveal CommentPeter Roberts bt Philip James (Nov 24) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "After a sound beating in my match earlier this week I had limited expectations for this morning’s duel with Phil in the damp November gloom. As it turned out it, we had a very competitive match with many deuce games including one where Phil must have saved at least 7 break points. On just about any other day this score line would be reversed or worse but almost everything was working today with far fewer errors than Wednesday. When Phil pegged it back to 4-4 in the second set I did wonder if the tables were about to turn but I managed to break him again and then had another strong service game to close it out. Best I have felt on court for a very long time! Thanks, Phil. "  -- Peter

Player Comments:

  • "Every match between John and I had been a 3 set thriller and this one is headed the same way. John was solid in set 1 making few errors and attacking my backhand consistently, forcing several errors on the slice. In the second set, I found some of my stroke play and led 5-2*, when John reeled off 4 straight games to make it 5*-6. I somehow held on for the tie-breaker and chanced my serve to push the match into a deciding set. To be completed soon! "  -- Vikranth

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentSimon Harrison bt Alfie Wong (Nov 28) 6-3, 5-7, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "What a titanic battle! We played despite the constant drizzle. Simon broke me once in the 1st set and held on to go a set up. The 2nd set went with serve until 4-4. I went 0-40 down but saved 4 break points to hold. Serving at 4-5, it was Simon's turn to go 0-40 down. He also saved 4 set points to level at 5-5. Serving at 5-6, Simon again went 0-40 down. He saved another break point, but I finally converted my sixth set point to level. Changing to new balls, Simon stormed to a 3-0 lead, but could not maintain the lead. At 4-4, I squandered 2 break opportunities. With me serving at 4-5, two good returns set up 2 match points Simon. I saved the first, but lost in the cruellest manner with a double fault after 2h 20m of relentless battle."  -- Alfie

Player Comments:

  • "I was quite fortunate as this was a much closer match than the score shows. Jin steadily improved as the match progressed, and with the 2nd set tied at 4-4, we embarked on a gruelling game - I lost count of the number of deuces! I was lucky enough to hold serve and then broke for the match. A really close and fun match! "  -- Mandy
Reveal CommentAlfie Wong bt Pippa Brady (Nov 16) 3-6, 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A rather disjointed match played on a very wet court next to kids' lessons and lots of traffic through a wide open gate. Pippa coped with the heavy conditions better than I did on the off. After she won the first set, we changed to some new balls which helped me to regain my rhythm. I raced to a 5-1 lead in the final set before Pippa mounted a late comeback, pegging me back to 5-4 to serve for the match for a second time. At 30-30, I finally strung two big serves together to get over the very tight finish line as we clocked the two-hour mark."  -- Alfie

Player Comments:

  • "Although Mandy had not competed in a mixed league for a while, she played an attractive all-court game that would be competitive against anybody. Except for the very first game where Mandy lost her serve, both of us held every service game until the end of the first set. It started to rain as we began the second set with a marathon game in which Mandy saved eight break points before finally succumbing to the ninth. Despite that, her level continued to rise, and finally when I served for the match at 5-4, she capitalised on a couple of tight double faults to break back to 5-5. The last two games saw some of the best rallies of the match until I finally crossed the finish line on my fourth match point. "  -- Alfie

Reveal CommentLouise Hird bt Emily Barnes (Nov 12) 4-6, 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Emily & I had a great match - lots of great rallies & lots of running on a rather damp evening. The match went to & fro many times & could have gone either way in the last set - there were literally one or two points in it. The balls got heavier & heavier as it was so damp & we both felt we were walloping the ball only for it to land halfway up the court! We played for a full 2 hours & felt we both deserved a drink at the end of it. Look forward to playing again sometime"  -- Louise

Last time we played on the hottest day of the year & were desperate for an ice cream, this time we both headed home feeling like we'd deserved a G&T. Look forward to playing again."  -- Louise

  • "Played on a frosty evening on a court that was more like a ice skating rink. Josh adapted to the conditions quickly and breezed the first set... I made some adjustments and rebounded well to take the second in style! In the third set decider we were both firing on all cylinders and were level at 5-5 when a break finally came my way and then had a strong hold to win it! Reveal CommentJavier Garcia bt Jenny Hong (Nov 17) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Always great to play Jenny - every match we have played has been a real battle and this score is not a reflection on the match. I raced to a 5-1 lead and Jenny pulled it back to 5-4 before I managed to break to take the first. Her comeback forced me to re-asses the second, get back to basics and aim for consistency rather than winners. That combined with a slight drop in Jenny's winners from her usually fizzing forehand, albeit with numerous deuce games, meant I was lucky to get over the line. Great play, as ever, Jenny. Good luck for the rest of round 50"  -- Javier
