It was great to see friendly, competitive tennis return to the courts of Wimbledon Park and a total of 230 matches were played which is fantastic! We also welcomed 9 new players to the league alongside regular and returning players, and as is usual in the Leagues you didn't let a wide variety of weather conditions interrupt play, ranging from heat and humidity to heavy rain and thunder! Well played and we look forward to welcoming you back in the next round!

Group Summary:

Congratulations to Keir for retaining his Group 1 title but in the closest of circumstances, finishing just one point clear of runner up Lukasz who had one more match win and won their head to head. However, Keir played 2 more matches and earned the midway bonus points to finish on top. It was a strong performance from Tamas in third place too, winning 3 matches and narrowly losing a close 3 setter against Lukasz.

  • "An exceptionally close match, played on a still, warm, perfect-for-tennis evening. It was a tight, hard-fought encounter in which Carlos played with lots of variety and spin and showed some lovely touches at the net. The opening set went largely with serve until the final two games went my way. Carlos took a lead in the second; I pulled the scoreline back to level before he took his turn in managing to close out a set. The match tiebreak similarly had its ups and downs, with Carlos taking a strong lead before a shift in momentum allowed me to close out the match. A very enjoyable match!"  -- Ralph

But he didn't feel quite comfortable with his serve and I didn't make many mistakes, and the sets ended up going my way. The match was closer than the scoreline and Michael is a true gent; thank you, it was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon's tennis. Good luck with your remaining matches! "  -- Ralph

Player Comments:

  • "A sunny, warm summer afternoon, perfect for playing tennis. The opening four or five games were extremely tight, with Kat hitting strong groundstrokes and serves from both sides. The set then started to shift my way, but it was clear that Kat was starting to struggle a little in her movement and was in some pain. We attempted a few more games in a second set but unfortunately Kat was unable to continue. Thank you, Kat, for the games we managed; the match was friendly-spirited yet shaping up to be an entertaining encounter. I wish you all the best and a speedy recovery! "  -- Ralph

In the second set, he had a match point at 5:4 but I fought back from there to take the set 7:5. The championship tie breaker was similarly tight. • "Lovely sunny evening for a game of enjoyable tennis. After a somewhat shaky start, I thought I was in control at 5-2 in the first set, but started to miss a bit while Michael continued to improve and played very solid game to reach tiebreak and win the first set. Fortunately for me, Michael struggled with his serve in the second set while I found some consistency back to win the second set. With 15 minutes to go before the second hour, we decided to play the match tiebreak, which I just about managed to edge, but this match could certainly have gone either way. "  -- Jon

  • "Thank you, Jon, for a thoroughly enjoyable match! It was a long, epic one, with lots of closely-fought games, long rallies and winning shots to break the deadlock. The first two sets were played on a hot, sunny Saturday afternoon, with a wind blowing straight down the court proving tricky to adapt to. Jon took the first set and deservedly so, whilst the second one had plenty of to and fro in the scoreline before a tiebreak that I managed to take. Without time to finish the match at the first attempt, we played the third set on a warm, still evening the following week. Jon felt that his rythmn wasn't quite there as before and it was my good fortune that the final score went my way. Thanks again, Jon; good luck with your remaining matches! "  -- Ralph

Congratulations to Serge for winning Group 3 on his debut in Wimbledon Park Tennis League, finishing undefeated on 7 wins, one point clear of runner up Jon on 5 wins. • "A bit muggy for our close match this Friday evening, completed just before the rain arrived. Apart from when I edged each set, the only time we were more than a game apart was when John led 3-1 in the second set. Prior to that we had a very exciting, competitive first set with John countering my aggressive efforts with some great passing shots. It was probably steadier serving that swung the balance my way. After a long leave of absence, it just seemed to be there today. I was trying not to think of John turning the tables on me after the first set, but as so often happens, he did. This time I held my nerve to go from 1-3 to 4-3 before John squared it. I held again and John sent his second serve wide to concede. Very tight! Thx, John "  -- Peter

  • "With courts in Wimbledon Park now increasingly tricky to book, we retreated to Dundonald Park for this match. It was good to play on hard court for a change but this didn’t prevent me being victim to several deft drop-shots by Stephen. The first set was really a bit of a warm-up for him, returning to tennis after an extended break, but no doubt improving with each match now. After securing the first set, my shakey form took a dip while Stephen got some rhythm going and took the second quite easily. With only half an hour left, we opted for a championship tie-break in which I just kept my nose ahead, finishing with a decent serve. Thanks, Stephen and good luck with your other matches!"  -- Peter

Matt was much steadier in the first set while I was hitting a lot long. My serving picked up a bit in the second set and an extraordinary sequence of lucky breaks went my way including a couple of game-saving netcords and a few more random winners off great serves by Matt. I think the majority of games went to deuce, all very tight. In the third set, the level dipped slightly but my run of good fortune continued with some frustratingly jammy stuff. • "For me, completing a match pain-free was in itself a victory after a bad hand injury, and the win was an unexpected bonus. On the first day of Wimbledon fortnight, the typical Wimbledon weather returned - cold, damp, low sun and windy. Wikus coped with the conditions much better than I did, and raced to a one-set lead. I started to play better in the second set, feeling more secure with my serve. At 4-4, I broke first to go up 5-4, only for Wikus to even out immediately. I broke serve again with some aggressive play and then held on to wrap up the second set. I rode the momentum into the third set. After several long games, I went up 4-0. Then at 5-1, I broke Wikus's serve for one final time to complete my first victory of the round."  -- Alfie

  • "Another great match against Will, this time with me coming out on top though I’m not quite sure how. In very windy conditions, Will started really well, forcing deuces and break points in my early service games, meanwhile I struggled to get any of Will’s serves back. I managed to survive, and late on in the set, against the run of play, I managed to grab the only break and successfully served to take it. The second set was similar to the first, with lots of great rallies, and long games. I snuck a break early on, but was constantly under pressure from Will trying to break back and creating multiple break points. Somehow I held serve to win a really tight match on just the two breaks all match. "  -- Philip

  • "A great match, played in a lovely friendly way in the 30 degree heat on the hard courts of the AELTC. I got off to a good start though the 1st set was tighter than the score implies. In the 2nd set Babek started to change things up and target my weaknesses, but with a lot of hustle and luck I managed to build a 5-2 lead and served for the match. However Babek got one break back, and then saved two match points on his own serve and then another on mine, before breaking again to level it at 5-5. The momentum was all with Babek at this point who completed a run of five consecutive games to take the second set. Due to the heat we decided to play a match tiebreak, and I able to find some composure and form to build a lead, eventually taking it."  -- Philip

He had to work hard for his win against Jin with both sets going to tiebreaks, while Jin was the unlucky loser in another close match against Will... bad luck but great effort!

Phil and I only got 3 games in before we we succumbed to hostile park attendants & a thunderstorm. Second attempt was thwarted by a temperature for Maria & then subsequent heavy rain on attempt 3. The first set here was not a true reflection of Phil's ability; it was certainly not easy to play after we both got absolutely drenched so we could barely hold onto our rackets! When we finally got to finish our match on 9th July the final set went largely with serve. Couple of breaks each but I managed to hold my nerve to win 6-4.
