  • "A very enjoyable match, much tighter than the scoreline suggests. There were lots of long rallies, not just baseline ones, but back and forth to the net, volleys, lobs, drop shots, with some unbelievable points. I must have lost the last two kilos of my lockdown belly in the process. Great match, could have gone either way. "  -- Jon

Reveal CommentJon Gustafsson bt Serge Taborin (Aug 26) 6-2, 7-6 (9-7)

Player Comments:

  • "This was a great match with many long rallies and hard-contested points! I was 5-2 up in second set but couldn't get over the line and Serge instead made a great comeback. I was then 3-0 up in the tiebreak when Serge won 6 straight points to make it 6-3. I somehow managed to get back and only after a couple of uncharacteristic misses from Serge at 7-7 I was fortunate enough to nail it. Had Serge won that tiebreak, I think he most likely would have gone and won the decider. "  -- Jon

Player Comments:

  • "Another close match with Peter. The first set initially went Peters way as he played a series of clever cross court drop shots into the backhand, but I managed to sneak ahead towards the end of the set. I got an early break at the start of the second and managed to hang on as the rest of the games went with serve. Match was great fun and we had a good chat too. Good luck in rest of your matches."  -- Jon

Player Comments:

  • "Not either of our finest hours. Not sure what happened. We got to 3-3 on the first set with some exciting rallies and then the pace slowed and I lost what stroke I had, while Matt was steadier. Matt took a 2-0 lead in the second but I kept my head down and managed to win the rest of the games despite many tight deuce games. In the final set it was 2 All with less than 25 mins to go but I squeezed ahead to 4-2, and then it was over quite quickly. Looking forward to a better match next time, Matt! "  -- Peter

Reveal CommentMathew Smith bt Matt Dawkins (Aug 26) 7-5, 5-7, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "The Matt v Mat head-to-head was not one for those who had plans for the evening, as we only just managed to get 2 sets in within the 2 hours! Very close sets; just the odd point going my way in the 1st to get me over the line, and Matt firing in several aces backed up with some great passing shots meaning that I was always unsuccessfully chasing the 2nd. Hopefully, we can get in a 3rd in the next few weeks as it was a really enjoyable match to be part of played in great spirits."  -- Mathew
  • "A very close enjoyable match played in great spirits. Each set being decided by one of us just getting our noses in front and the other not quite being able to close the gap once opened, with the odd shot here and there just about making the difference." -- Mathew

  • "This is really a ridiculous scoreline and does not reflect the match at all. Almost every game went to multiple deuces and we had many really long rallies. The match took the full two hours, and I was completely exhausted after sprinting around the court for most of that time, chasing after lobs, trying to get to passing shots or just running from deep backhand to short forehand. I knew this was going to be tough, as our last match took three hours to complete and Joe is extraordinarily fit. In the end I was the luckier player. We both agreed to attempt to play in the light rain. It made it hard to get into a good rhythm. I settled down and managed the conditions better than Konstantinos. I was determined to break serve again, which happened immediately for me to go up 6-5. The final game was critical as I focused on landing my first serve to finally cross the finish line on my third match point seconds before the flood lights were switched off."  -- Alfie

Victor then went up 5-2 in the second and had his first set point on serve at 5-3. I managed to equalise to force a tie-break. I wasted three match points at 6-3, then Victor turned the table to create two more set points at 7-6 and 8-7. • "A great match, reminiscent of McEnroe vs Graf had they ever played each other. No doubt the occasion left both players riddled with nerves and anxieties. Combined with 50kmph gusts of wind conditions were set to make this a hard match for both players to show their true ability. But when the dust settled, and with the will of the adorning crowd, many pleasant rallies were had. All in all a great occasion, though Graf's (Sammy's) refusal to sign autographs for fans at the end left a bitter taste in the mouth."  -- Richard
