Player Comments:

  • "The scoreline describes the competitive nature of this match. Vadim got off to a quick start with rock solid all-court play while I generously donated many miscues and double faults. The second set was much closer, and I went up a break to serve for the set at 5-4. Vadim secured the crucial break to equalise. I then broke him again in the next game and took my second chance to serve out the set. The third set was a nervous affair, including four service breaks in the eight games that we managed to complete. After two hours, there was absolutely nothing to split us apart, so the match will need to be completed on another day. [Vadim to serve first upon resumption.]"  -- Alfie

Reveal CommentAlfie Wong bt Emily Barnes (Feb 22) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Matches against Emily are always very tough. It took us both a while to get used to the new floodlights at Wimbledon Park. The match began immediately with two service breaks, after which I settled into a good rhythm to reach 5-3. As I attempted to serve for the first set, Emily played an excellent return game to quickly go up 0-40. Somehow I managed to save those three break points and a fourth one to close out the set at the first opportunity. In the second set, I went up 4-2, at which point Emily played three flawless games to reverse the deficit and advance to a 5-4 lead. I held serve to equalise, then break Emily one final time before serving out a very competitive and close match."  -- Alfie

Luckily then that I loosened up with my serve half way through the first set which helped me keep up some additional pressure. Just as well as the rallies were pretty even and fiercely contested, with Oscar rather quicker about the court! Dome steady ground strikes helped Oscar take a 1-2!lead in the second before I managed to steady the ship and advance to 4-2. All very tight with just about ever game going to (multiple) deuces. A great relief to close it out finally! Thanks, Oscar for an excellent match. "  -- Peter

Player Comments:

  • "Tricky conditions for our early Sunday morning bout. The wind was gusting down the court making unusually hazardous and leasing to some comical adjustments just to get the racquet on the ball, but an entertaining challenge for both. Adrian pulled away from me in the first with some steady play, despite my best efforts and the games mostly going to deuce. Managed to steady the ship at 1-4 and claw my way back while Adrian’s serve faltered and he was unable to deal with the wind as well as I seemed to. In the second set, I kept my serve going and got a bit more consistency with the ground strikes but all games were close and competitive. Either set could have gone either way in this very even encounter. Thanks, Adrian."  -- Peter

  • "A very tough match under less-than-perfect lighting, Rachel dominated the first set, blocking some of my best ground strokes and serving and directing the ball much more confidently than me and making virtually no errors. I thought it was all over when she took a 0-3 lead in the second set but managed to hang on with some slower shots, then clawed my way back to a 5-4 lead. The final match tie-break was again nip and tuck and it was a relief to come back from 6-9 down. Just managed to convert the second of two match points when Rachel hit long. Thanks for a thrilling, competitive match, Rachel I look forward to the next one, hopefully with fewer interruptions from neighbouring courts! "  -- Peter

  • "A tough match with returning player Jake who will be firing on all cylinders and an even tougher opponent very soon. After breaking a string in the third game, Jake had to adjust to using my identical spare duelling racket to me. In spite of this, he was hitting many powerful winners, so palpable relief for me to close out the first set. Second set very different affair as Jake got into his stride and in truth I thought all may be lost. Towards the end, I just tried to clear my head and focus on hitting the ball with an upward swing. Some errors then started to creep in as Jake, having doughnutted me in the 2nd, seemed to take his foot off the gas. Some improved serving and steadier play helped me finish it off, finally. Thanks, Jake. "  -- Peter

  • "Nice competitive opener against Richard, returning to the game after a bit of an extended pit stop. Once he finds all his gears again it will be a very different score line but there were still many excellent passes and returns which were too hot for me to handle. But it was a night when my serving just went very well and helped me apply extra pressure. Just hope I can keep it going in my other matches, though my LTL career to date would suggest otherwise ? Thanks, Richard, for a very enjoyable, sporting match. "  -- Peter

Reveal CommentTobin Byers bt Jenny Hong (Feb 17) 6-3, 2-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "This was a great match which swung one way then the other. We had some really good rallies, particularly in the first and second sets. There were very few short games, with a lot of deuces on both serves. In the third set the energy levels dropped a little and we then had an epic game when Jenny was serving at 2 4 which had numerous deuces in it and seemed like it would never end. I was very glad to get the win in the end."  -- Tobin

Player Comments:

  • "Sarah and I played a very enjoyable match in very windy conditions. I admire her willingness to play the ball in the air, including an excellent cross-court volley to deprive me of a backhand winner. As is so often the case, the cruelty of tennis scoring is no index of a competitive match. Cheers, Sarah. Till next time . . ."  -- Brendan
