Player Comments:

  • "Match to decide winner of the league so we were both nervous & error prone. I was on a low anyway having just been thrashed twice in two days in the Liverpool league, a sudden awareness that I need better rackets, & waking up with viral symptoms (sore throat & low energy) We can both rally for ever from the baseline. Neither of us could find shots with the pace & angle to hit winners. So I think in the first set I won mainly coz Chris made more unforced errors. 2nd set we both raised our game resulting in some long excellent rallies & some winning baseline shots. Chris was better in baseline rallies I think so the game was decided at the net where I got just a few more winning smashes & volleys than did Chris lobs & passing shots"  -- Rob
Reveal CommentDavid Britzman bt Peter Ferrett (Oct 7) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Good to meet Peter over in Birkenhead Park and get our game played. The match was much more difficult than the score suggests with Peter playing some difficult forehand and backhand slices from the middle of the court that made me run a lot. His drop shots and variety of spins were very well disguised and so I often found myself sprinting forward and digging out low balls. I managed to win by keeping good depth to my shots from the back of the court and using drop shots at the right times to win the points. Had a good chat afterwards about the game and I look forward to playing Peter on his home court sometime where I'm sure he'll be even more of a challenge!!"  -- David
Reveal CommentRob Slade bt Peter Ferrett (Oct 5) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "If Peter’s appearance, his wild hair and beard makes you think he’s an alcoholic who spent last night on a park bench then you’d be off your guard because he a fit guy who can run & rally all day long and he has all the shots. If you rally with him from the baseline without pace he will dictate play from the T with a massive array of shots: volleys, half volleys, angled shots, drop shots, slice, drive volleys and top spin on both wings. The only thing missing from his game is pace. To counter this my tactic which worked today was to hit deep and with pace to the corners and get to the net. After the match we had a practice set where I played from the baseline and Peter was 5-4 up when we ran out of court time. "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentPeter Ferrett bt Philip Brown (Oct 4) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "It was good to meet Phil. We managed to play outside, very luckily between bouts of rain, in the late evening under floodlights on Thorndale's excellent hard courts. Phil's just getting back to playing this sort of match and I expect when he's played a few more he'll get more games. I expect his forehand drive, which was one of his best shots today, will continue to improve as he gets the feel for the depth of shot he needs to hit it. Today he managed to hit some good winners with it particularly towards the end of the first set. He also got some good points with nicely angled sliced backhands. Like with James a few days ago, my game today seemed to have a distinct bias towards my hitting forehand slice drives. Thanks for the match Phil."  -- Peter
Reveal CommentJames Hooley bt Philip Brown (Oct 2) 7-6 (7-4), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "It was great to meet Phil and take part in a really close game in very windy conditions at Birkenhead Park. There was literally nothing between us in the first set which I managed to nick on the tie break. (Phil missed a few at the net to let me off the hook.) I managed to get more consistency in my serve which meant the second set wasn't as tight. A competitive game between 2 equally matched players."  -- James
Reveal CommentPeter Ferrett bt James Hooley (Oct 1) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It was great to meet James, we played at Birkenhead Park where the rain, which we'd had on and off all week on Wirral, stayed off, the sun even came out. It was our first meeting and James may have had some problems with my spin and off-pace shots, in particular my forehand slice drive. I'm sure next time we play he'll have less trouble as he was reading shots better as the match progressed. James placed shots well when given a rallying ball and hit some good winners when he got the balance of power and depth right (he was 2-1 up in the second set.) His ability to get to shots quickly is impressive and so I didn't do my dropshot-and-lob much at all today When his consistency and shots improve I expect a much tougher match. Thanks James."  -- Peter
Reveal CommentChristopher Docherty bt James Hooley (Sep 25) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "James played consistently well.and pushed me all the way with some nice touches around the net. Could have done without numerous long rallies in hot humid, energy sapping conditions. James told me he has consciously changed his game to from 'lights out' towards consistency. It was my serve gave me the edge. "  -- Christopher

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentChristopher Docherty bt David Britzman (Sep 14) 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7)

Player Comments:

  • "Epic match perfect conditions under floodlights, extremely close all the way through very few unforced errors. Both agreed we need to work on getting to the net and finishing points with more confidence. Defensive tennis at its finest! Well played David! "  -- Christopher
Reveal CommentChristopher Docherty bt Peter Ferrett (Sep 12) 6-2, 4-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Well well, Peter used the damp conditions on clay to his advantage forcing long rallies with his crafty back spin not allowing me to get any pace on my ground strokes. Every point was hard won and we both played - 'let the opponent make a mistake game'. I finally got my game going and finished off the third set. Well played Peter!"  -- Christopher
Reveal CommentChristopher Docherty bt Philip Brown (Sep 11) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Some very close rallies but my serve was happily on song. Very enjoyable.. "  -- Christopher
Reveal CommentDavid Britzman bt James Hooley (Sep 7) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Great to meet James and get a good game in on a really hot afternoon in Birkenhead Park. We had some good rallies throughout, especially when the ball was on James' forehand side and he made me hit some good winners to finish off the points. His serve and forehand in particular were very strong and I can imagine them being quite a weapon when he gets some more practice in. Overall an enjoyable game and great to meet James, I'm sure he'll be a much tougher opponent the next time we play."  -- David
Reveal CommentRob Slade bt Philip Brown (Sep 7) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Phil has only just started playing competitive tennis but we had some good rallies and he started playing some excellent shots in the second set. We had a good practice third set. Bar closed at 9pm at David Lloyd (?) but we just made it to the Old Hall Farm for a pint (they close at 9:30!) for some good tennis and other talk. "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentRob Slade bt David Britzman (Sep 5) 2-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "Our usual marathon match. We know how to stop each other playing tennis, or neutralise each other’s good shots or tactics. 1st set David crushed me 6-2 in 20 minutes, both at the baseline where David makes zero unforced errors. 2nd set I won 6-0 in 20 minutes by hitting the ball deeper & coming to the net every shot. 3rd set lasted 2 hours. David adjusted to my net play and started hitting accurate lobs and passing shots. My volleys & smashes must have been by the finest of margins better than David’s lobs and passing shots, to make it 7-6 in games and 7-5 in the tie break to me. It couldn’t have been closer. I think we subconsciously adjust our game to turn it around when losing. It’s our brains that don’t like losing, not our egos. "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentPaul Scallion bt Peter Ferrett (Aug 25) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Was buzzing to see Pete in the same group, have always enjoyed playing him and where he plays at North Cheshire LTC is one of my favourite places to play. Petes never gonna hit you off court but his unusual stlye makes sure you have to cover most of it during a match. It was really warm when we played and I was starting to feel the pace in the second set so was glad I could win that one as it felt a lot closer than a 6-3 and I didnt fancy a third. Thanks for an enjoyable match again Pete and look forward to playing again."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentRob Slade bt James Hooley (Aug 22) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "James is a bit rusty but if he gets in practice beware his forehand and back hand cross court drop shots and short angles. James had quite a few games points (40 love up in one game)"  -- Rob

My percentage Tennis was enough today to get a win, if Eddie had less unforced errors then the match would have been his. Hope to play again. NB I learned something new today -keep your strings warm! Also quick advert for Pro at hoylake, restringing racket for £20 and did great job... Would recommend..."  -- Colin

Fast forward a month and with a bit more practice under my belt I managed to win the final two sets. The game was very close and James could easily have won it. Thanks again James, look forward to playing you again in the spring. "  -- Lee
Reveal CommentHoward Davies bt Kalpani Vitharana (Oct 3) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "We were just about lucky with the weather - it had stopped raining but it left the court a bit on the dangerous side, making for some unnerving unexpected slides....! Kalpani is a great opponent and it's hard to believe she is pretty new to tennis. We had some long rallies and the last point was deuce-adv-deuce-adv for what seemed like forever hahaha. Looking forward to playing again :-)"  -- Howard
Reveal CommentKalpani Vitharana bt Norman Nelson (Sep 30) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Norman didn't double fault once, with 90% of his first serves going in. He was always in the right places knowing right before I hit my shots where I would place them. Slippery conditions meant I couldn't chase Norman's cleverly placed shots. Norman couldn't run to all my shots but he counteracted this limitation by varying the lengths of his shots and putting me on the backfoot. He won some superb points going past me when I approached the net. For someone who hasn't played tennis for the last 15 years, Norman has impressive shots, clever tactics and consistent serves that always go in! Once Norman improves his fitness and his tennis elbow heals, I am certain that he will become an even more competitive opponent! "  -- Kalpani
Reveal CommentHoward Davies bt Benjamin Wong (Sep 25) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "We had a great match at the Birkenhead Park courts in ideal conditions. The first set flew by but by the second set Ben really got into his stride and came back with force, winning four games in a row with powerful returns to just where I didn't want them to land haha. Some long rallies which had both of us all over the courts puffing and panting made it a very enjoyable match all round :-) "  -- Howard
Reveal CommentLee Philpotts bt Norman Nelson (Sep 22) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It was so nice to play Norman at his Tennis club in Port Sunlight. The courts were fantastic. Norman was defying the years and playing some great shots, I am hoping I can still play like Norman when I reach his age. Looking forward to playing you again in the next round. "  -- Lee
Reveal CommentBenjamin Wong bt Norman Nelson (Sep 16) 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "It was lovely to meet Norman and play at Port Sunlight tennis club! Lovely location and on a lovely autumn day too! 1st set I was more consistent and held my nerve to score 6 -0 with few deep shots killing short balls and using all corners of the court. 2nd set and Norman held his serve more successfully with serve to my backhand in the deuce Court which I had difficulty returning and always seem to hit the net. There were longer rallies too with some clever placement of shots by Norman!!! It was also great to hear about Norman's stories and he has a very endearing character!!!! Good luck with your remaining matches and hope to play you again soon Norman!!"  -- Benjamin
Reveal CommentAdam Dunn bt Lee Philpotts (Sep 16) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "It was great to meet Lee today, the weather was great for us at Birkenhead Park! Lee’s 1st serve was incredible making it very difficult for me to return. We both had some unforced errors and double faults but overall the match was much closer than the score suggests. We both made some impressive shots, and I don’t think Lee liked my backhand slice (which was working well for me today haha). I throughly enjoyed playing Lee today and look forward to playing again! "  -- Adam
Reveal CommentKalpani Vitharana bt Benjamin Wong (Sep 14) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A very enjoyable match with Ben! Ben broke my serve in the first game of the 1st set, so he definitely set the tone early! Ben was ballsy and adventurous throughout the sets, building his confidence against me by hitting great angled shots, down the line and baseline winners and finishing off my second serves! Even Ben was impressed and chuffed with himself with some of his winners:)He definitely hit more winners than I did, I barely hit any but what let Ben down were his unforced errors. He was 3-1 up in the 2nd set but I managed to be more consistent than him. He saved numerous match points and broke my serve but at 5-4 down a couple of double faults and unforced errors gave me the win! Im sure next time we play he will be even better!"  -- Kalpani
Reveal CommentHoward Davies bt Norman Nelson (Sep 11) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "We played at Port Sunlight which must be one of the nicest settings for a match around locally and the weather was just right. Norman has a powerful serve which was sometimes difficult to return and it was a very enjoyable match. Look forward to getting some more games in before the weather starts stopping play! "  -- Howard
Reveal CommentLee Philpotts bt Benjamin Wong (Sep 8) 2-6, 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "We played at Meols for our decider and it was very windy. Lee managed the conditions better than me earlier on, raced into a 3-0 lead. Managed to equalise 5-5, neither us preferring the side where the wind was blowing against!!! Too many unforced errors at the end of the day and Lee played more consistently given the circumstances!!!"  -- Benjamin
  • "This match was played over two sessions, unfortunately the light cut our first attempt short. The match was evenly poised at 1 set each. We finished the final set at Meols parade. We both found it difficult to adapt to the very windy conditions. Ben is technically very good and he plays some beautiful shots that I had no chance of returning. This game could of gone either way, as the score suggests. Thanks Ben, very enjoyable playing you." -- Lee
Reveal CommentKalpani Vitharana bt James Hanlon (Sep 8) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "James is a very clever and tactical player who is technically very strong in his tennis abilities. He is tactically much better than me, my only advantage being the fact I can retrieve every ball. If James didn't have his knee I am confident he could easily beat a fair few of us! We had a few observers next to us who happened to watch us, and at some point one of them comes to me and says he is a tactical genius!. I think this sums up the kind of tennis player that James is! There were 2 games where both me and James could not seem to finish off our serve as it went to 10+ deuces :S Thankfully, I managed to win the match-quite a learning curve for me! Thank you James!"  -- Kalpani

Player Comments:

  • "It was a pleasure to play Ben again, on one of the hottest days of the year! 27 degree heat with the sun beaming in our eyes! It was a close match, like it always is when we play, much closer than the score suggests. Ben played some very tricky short shots which I really struggled to return. We were both tired by the end, but most definitely enjoyed it. Best of luck with the rest of your matches Ben! "  -- Adam

I struggled to finish off points throughout the sets hitting quite a lot of unforced errors but on the 3rd set I tried to be more consistent. I really enjoyed this match and I hope we both get to play again!"  -- Kalpani

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentKalpani Vitharana bt Lee Philpotts (Aug 20) 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2)

Player Comments:

  • "It was the first time for me and Lee to ever play in a league! We were both nervous in the first set, and once he relaxed he had an easy win in the 2nd set. We both came into this match thinking it was going to take an hour-it took 3.5 hours! Third set, Lee was up 4-1, but somehow I came back winning it in a tie break. I have to say, if the other opponets are going to be like Lee, I am going to have a tough time! All our games were very competitive and tense. The amount of top spin Lee adds to his forehand is a killer! I just couldn't seem to return those! And on top of that, Lee hit some angled shots with slice and back spin- superb shots! We were both evenly matched so could have gone either way! Thanks Lee, great match!"  -- Kalpani
