Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Danny Gallagher bt Liam Keelan (Feb 17) 7-5, 7-6 (7-5)
Reveal CommentLiam Keelan bt Peter Ferrett (Feb 17) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable Birkenhead Park match. Liam has some good shots including deadly flattish forehand drives from both corners. I got some points on Liam's serves, which are possibly his weakest shots at the moment, as he did more double faults than I did. Countering that, his return of my serves were very consistent and often placed where I couldn't do a lot with them. I got to play a few of my favourite pace off balls (dropshots, low slices and overtopspin deadeners) to win the odd point but if they weren't really good Liam would get to them and punish them, particularly with angled slight topspin crosscourt drives to the deuce court serviceline-innertramline T. A good workout for me but when Liam hones his serves I'll expect to win less points"  -- Peter
Danny Gallagher bt Peter Ferrett (Feb 13) 6-1, 6-0
Reveal CommentMartin Isherwood bt Colin Rens (Feb 11) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "My first time playing at Bidston and enjoyed it and I especially liked the £2 guest fee. I probably served better today than ever before which got me quite a few cheap points and my drop shots all seemed to work. There was some good rallies and Colin did some amazing lobs into my backhand corner for clear winners. My new stringing job seemed to do the trick in the whole delivering the right blend of power and feel. Gut mains and Luxilon Alu power anniversary crosses strung at 59lbs which is Federer current setup. Thanks for the match Colin. "  -- Martin
Reveal CommentAndrew Atkinson bt Raj Chauhan (Feb 11) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Thoroughly enjoyable game played in testing weather conditions. Plenty of games went to 30 all & deuce whilst I often had no answer when Raj attacked my 2nd serve"  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentAndrew Atkinson bt Peter Ferrett (Feb 10) 7-5, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A great match played in good old fashioned British winter weather with a light drizzle throughout."  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentMartin Isherwood bt Peter Ferrett (Feb 9) 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "It was my first time playing at Birkenhead Park but enjoyed the outside venue and the challenges it brought. In the first set I was able to keep the ball in court and Peter and I had some very good rallies and most game were close. The second set couldn’t have been more different, the sun was low and made seeing the ball very difficult at times. Peter took a 5-1 lead using his tricky slices and drops. I was able to turn the set around by changing tactics to a serve volley approach. Thanks for an enjoyable game Peter and I look forward to our next meeting. Good luck. "  -- Martin
Reveal CommentPeter Ferrett bt Raj Chauhan (Feb 7) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable afternoon's tennis on a nice bright day at Birkenhead Park. Raj is starting to get the basis of some good strokes, particularly the crosscourt forehand. In the game he took off me in the second set he placed some nicely controlled, slightly more aggressive shots which I couldn't get to. I think with continued match play his game should improve noticeably in the near future. After the match finished we continued to have a hit where Raj was rallying with good consistency. I look forward to playing you again sometime soon Raj. Thanks for the match."  -- Peter
Danny Gallagher bt Colin Rens (Feb 7) 6-2, 6-1
Reveal CommentDanny Gallagher bt Martin Isherwood (Feb 6) 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A very good match, which had 2 different style of players. Martin liked to slice his forehand and keep it low, and use it to defend. His ability to get to balls from one side to another and stretch for a ball, when it’s going past him is ridiculous. They should call him Stertch. Armstrong. He used very bit of his reach advantage and 6 foot plus lean frame. At one point, the match was getting away from me. The match lasted 2 1/2 hours. Thanks to the League again for these fantastic matches. "  -- Danny
Reveal CommentMarco Candeloro bt Raj Chauhan (Feb 6) 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Was so nice to play indoors while it was a very cold and wet out. Thanks for the match Raj. Hope to play again soon. "  -- Marco
Danny Gallagher bt Farid Alsafaaf (Feb 4) 6-2, 6-2
Reveal CommentRob Slade bt Liam Keelan (Feb 3) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Like Farid another good player just returning to the game who is rusty but after just one set was getting into his stride. Also like Farid, beware the inside out forehand. Lots of good rallies and close games in this match. The second set could have gone either way. (Liam had a point for 5 all). Again good to have a drink and a talk in a comfy lounge (David Lloyd Speke). Liverpool Tennis Centre has a coffee machine but in several visits there in two years it was only working on one occasion. "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentRob Slade bt Farid Alsafaaf (Feb 2) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Farid said he had only just started playing tennis after a 15 year gap. So a big shock when we start playing and he’s hitting outright winners with an inside out forehand and I’m very quickly 2-1 down in the first set. I did win the match but only by defensive play, knowing that a rusty player will make a few mistakes. So lots of good long rallies, a good workout and good to have a drink and a talk after in the David Lloyd lounge. There should always be a good café for a drink and talk afterwards. Birkenhead Park cafe is good but it shuts at 4pm. Beware of Farid in a few months. He’s got an interesting racket, the Wilson Burn 100. It was tightly strung, 56lb but still had a lot of power. "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentDanny Gallagher bt Raj Chauhan (Jan 31) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Raj showed good sportsmanship."  -- Danny
Reveal CommentDanny Gallagher bt Marco Candeloro (Jan 30) 6-4, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Good match, played in good spirit."  -- Danny
Reveal CommentRob Slade bt Peter Ferrett (Jan 29) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Based on the forecast we arranged to play at 3pm in Birkenhead Park and we got two hours of sunshine, winds below 15mph, and temperature above 5 degrees. So all pretty good for tennis, in Wintry Birkenhead Park, still good surrounding, acres of grass and dog walkers and hundreds of skeleton trees and a few evergreens. Lots of good rallies and a good workout. No easy points against Mr F who is as fast as his name and who can block slice lob or volley most balls from his preferred midfield position. "  -- Rob
  • "Another enjoyable match against Rob. Sometimes I feel I might be getting somewhere in a game then Rob will mix it up with a great attacking play eg coming to the net after playing me a difficult approach shot to my feet. Playing Rob always seems to help my game which is one of the plus sides to our encounters. Thanks for the match," -- Peter
Reveal CommentLiam Keelan bt Farid Alsafaaf (Jan 28) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable game, some long rallies in there and the second set being much tighter than the score suggests. Great to play you Farid and look forward to playing again!"  -- Liam
Reveal CommentColin Rens bt Raj Chauhan (Jan 28) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks for the game Raj - good luck with your other games. Score line is a bit flattering as there were plenty of Deuce points played were games could have gone either way. Getting your 1st service % up will be a game changer... "  -- Colin
Reveal CommentAndrew Atkinson bt Farid Alsafaaf (Jan 27) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Thoroughly enjoyable game played in a great spirit and with some nice rallies. The game was closer than the scoreline suggests, I was just able to play the bigger points a bit better. Looking forward to our next meeting"  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentColin Rens bt Marco Candeloro (Jan 26) 1-6, 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This is why I play Local Tennis League - another close fought match played in great spirit. Marco normally gets the better of me (always over 3 sets) but today it seemed the Net was my friend I had 4-1 in final set but Marco pulled it back to 4-4 before I somehow managed a last break and hold to walk off the court a very tired but happy player... Thanks Marco - looking forward to next game..."  -- Colin
Reveal CommentFarid Alsafaaf bt Marco Candeloro (Jan 25) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Marco is a brilliant player..that backhand had me on the ropes for most of the game and the score certainly doesn't do the match justice. So enjoyable to play with you mate..look forward to our next meeting. Farid "  -- Farid
Reveal CommentPeter Ferrett bt Marco Candeloro (Jan 22) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "I've probably played Marco in the Local Tennis League matches more than I've played anyone else. Unluckily, Marco just couldn't really get his game together today as normally we have quite a close match and he plays several absolute killer shots over the course of it. Today we got to deuce and ad to Marco several times but Marco wasn't able to put as many of the important points away as he would normally. I was the more consistent player of the two of us today and some of my shots seemed to have been working well. It's always a pleasure to play Marco and I'm sure our next encounter should have a much closer scoreline. Thanks again for the match Marco and I hope to play you again soon. "  -- Peter
Reveal CommentColin Rens bt Farid Alsafaaf (Jan 21) 6-2, 6-2

  • "Thanks Farid, great match played in great spirit. Some good rallies and nice winners - hope to play again soon... Col"  -- Colin
Reveal CommentPeter Ferrett bt Farid Alsafaaf (Jan 20) 6-2, 3-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A very pleasant afternoon's tennis at Birkenhead Park with a well fought match. Farid is coming back to tennis having not played for quite a while. He was obviously regaining some of his shots as we played. Farid moves well and gets to balls quickly., if I made weak shots he would drive a forehand into the corner or place a volley or overhead where I couldn't get to it. In the second set he was hitting shots I couldn't get to. I ended up playing a lot of slices (1 and 2 handed backhands and 1 handed forehands) to try to make Farid hit up and out. I was probably the more consistent on serve which helped. Once Farid gets all his old shots back and starts developing others I think my results against him may well go the other way.. Thanks Farid"  -- Peter
