Player Comments:

  • "Played Rob a good few times before, and despite never getting a set I'd always enjoyed it as hes such a unique and tough opponent. His ability to change tactics and game styles throughout a match is hard to deal with but where hes always killed me in the past is the number of points he wins at the net. I think I hit my passing shots really well today and that nicked me enough points over the course of the match to win it. Could of easily gone the other way, I was struggling to hang in at the back end of the 2nd set, but once I edged that I got a lot more energy, and I think Rob was carrying a bit of an injury and couldnt play at his best level. Cheers Rob for playing at Port Sunlight, look forward to playing again soon."  -- Paul

Danny Elder bt Andrew Benc (Jul 12) 6-2, 6-0
Reveal CommentPaul Scallion bt Andrew Benc (Jul 10) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Great to play Andrew again, a very sporting player and real gent. We played at Meols parade which I'd never been to before, great courts in a great location, I would highly recommend playing there if you havent. He won a tough match last time we played and this was tough again, very close and physical throughout. He has good attacking shots so I tried to move him around as much as possible to stop him using these, and when he did get his strong forehand shots into my backhand corner I managed to dig enough out to sneak a few extra points which made a difference. I played a horrible service game at 5-4 in the 2nd but recovered well and played 2 good games to get over the line. Thanks for the game Andrew, look forward to playing again soon."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentRob Slade bt Eddie Gilchrist (Jul 7) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Eddie has got some good shots eg the serve, forehand and backhand and he won a lot of rallies by some excellent play but in this match he also made a lot of mistakes. I think he will do well with more practice and more matches. "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentDavid Britzman bt Paul Scallion (Jul 6) 7-6 (9-7), 0-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Great game with Paul over in Birkenhead Park with a lot of gruelling rallies from the back of the court. The first set could of gone either way with Paul having 3 set points that he couldn't quite convert after long rallies. Tie break was very close and I ended up just edging it 9-7. The first set took a lot of energy and I struggled in the second going down 6-0 pretty quickly as Paul upped his game and hit some good forehand winners. I managed to recover some energy before the third set and took an early lead with some good defensive play. Managed to hang on while both of us were struggling with fatigue and just about came out on top after some long tiring rallies. A very close match that could of gone either way..!!"  -- David
Danny Elder bt David Britzman (Jul 1) 7-6 (7-3), 6-4
Reveal CommentPaul Scallion bt Eddie Gilchrist (Jun 30) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "I'd played doubles against Eddie before and was expecting a close match but unfortunately for him he wasnt at his best today. Also he hasnt played a great deal of singles, so I was able to use both of them things to my advantage and get the win. Was an enjoyable game, Eddies a very sporting player, and would be good to play him again soon."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentRob Slade bt David Britzman (Jun 28) 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, [10-1]

Player Comments:

  • "David beat me in a three hour slog last round, so I was expecting the same today. He’s the fastest player in the group, gets to every ball and hits good shots off 90% of them, deep or angled and if you play at the net he hits some lethal passing shots & lobs So in the 1st set I played at the net and this worked but only just, 7-6. In the 2nd set David got used to my serve and won 6-2 by hitting outright service return winners, lobbing me or passing me cross court and down the line after one volley Biggest surprise of my life therefore that I won the MTB 10-1 purely from the baseline. So, go to the net & David will punish you with lethal passing shots & lobs. Stay back & you have a chance but be prepared for a long match"  -- Rob

Reveal CommentPeter Ferrett bt David Kennaugh (Jul 27) 4-6, 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This was one of those matches that one always wants to play: some long rallies, varied and intelligent shot selection from both players and a lot of points where someone wins the point with a really good shot rather than by their opponent making an error. We played at North Cheshire LTC, David adapting quickly to the shale courts. His consistency and shot placement had me beat in the 1st set, my weak shots being punished by well placed forehand drives or good net play. In the 2nd &3rd sets we moved each other around a lot with David hitting some great winners on the stretch, I then managed to get my dropshots, lobs, spin and off-pace shots working, mixed with the odd drive. Then afterwards we played two further friendly sets. Thanks David."  -- Peter

  • "Played on a nice warm day at Birkenhead park. I started the match well and then Dax was ahead 3-0 in the second set and then i managed to get a few more games in and then eventually win the match. Although i had to work very hard as I had 5 match points . Thanks for the game "  -- Marco

Player Comments:

  • "First time playing at these great courts in New Brighton - didn't even know they existed. Will try and play here more... even with the rain over the last 24 hours, including this morning, they were bone dry... Bogdan started well in each set, but too many unforced errors meant I managed a win today. "  -- Colin
Reveal CommentMarco Candeloro bt Bogdan Popa (Jul 4) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A great match played today by both of us, lots of long rallies with some drop shots and over head lobs. Bogdan was 5-4 and had 2 set points in the second set and i managed to save both points and then went on to win the match. Thanks for the game. Marco "  -- Marco
Reveal CommentPeter Ferrett bt Bogdan Popa (Jul 2) 6-1, 4-6, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Two hours played on a hot day at Marine Park. Bogdan's game has improved a lot since our last Park's League match. I ran away with the 1st set mainly by consistent placement of shots, but he regrouped to take the 2nd set, coming in aggressively, forcing errors from me and placing some good overhead & drive winners. He carried his momentum over into the 3rd set and was soon 3-0 up, I then tried to rally more consistently, waiting to move Bogdan wide or bring him to the net on my terms with drop shots. The game to get to 3-2 had so many deuces and ad ins/ ad outs it felt like playing a set on it's own. I got to 5-4 up Bogdan hit some great returns for 5-5, but the odd error in the last two games gave me the match. Thanks for the match Bogdan."  -- Peter
Reveal CommentPeter Ferrett bt Colin Rens (Jun 27) 7-5, 4-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Another epic match with Col on a shale court at North Cheshire, two and a half hours, with an amazing amount of long rallies. The first set was incredibly tight though at the start neither of us could hold serve and after we got to five games all I managed to keep my play solid enough to take the set. Col ran away with the second set 4-1 and though I got three more games I couldn't catch up, Col moving me all around the court and hitting some great forehands to win it. Col's good movement and reach always means any lobs and passing shots have to be precise to avoid his volleys and overheads. In the third set I regained consistency and momentum with my usual shot armoury and Col unluckily had a few more shot's going just long. Thanks Col."  -- Peter
Reveal CommentPeter Ferrett bt DAX BALE (Jun 25) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "It was good to meet Dax. He had a good shout regarding the weather, which was originally forecast for heavy rain all day but in the end we managed to avoid that at Birkenhead Park and played after the rain had ceased. Overall in the match Dax was rallying well and he was game point up several times but was unlucky in not being able to put more games away. Dax was getting used to my slices much better towards the end and he was hitting some good winners off of some of my shots including an incredible backhand sliced angle shot winner. I was playing my usual game of slices, off pace shots, dropshots, lobs and topspin angled dippers but they needed to be good against Dax to win the point. It was an enjoyable match to play in. Thanks again Dax."  -- Peter
Reveal CommentPeter Ferrett bt Marco Candeloro (Jun 23) 6-2, 3-6, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Another good match with Marco on North Cheshire LTC's shale courts. There was a slight drizzle dampening the top dressing of the courts making the ball stay lower. Marco won the first two games of the 1st set and then I managed to get more consistent, hitting some winners and Marco was making a few more errors than me. Marco came out storming in the 2nd set getting to every ball including my wide angled shots and what I thought were good drop shots, he then proceeded to hit well placed winning shots past me. In the 3rd set Marco's placement consistency went off slightly and he hit several shots just wide into the tramlines while I hit some winning slices and spin deadeners which didn't come up off the damp court surface. Thanks again Marco"  -- Peter

  • "Played in really nice conditions at Birkenhead park today. Colin and I always have a great match. Lots of long rallies, drop shots and volleys. The match lasted for 2 and a half hours and we were both exhausted in the end. I fought for every point and Colin just made a few more unforced errors which gave me the win today. Win or lose it was an epic match. Thanks for the game . Hope to play again soon. "  -- Marco

It was fairly heavy rain during the first set ( I had to take off my glasses to actually see the ball) but this settled down for the rest of the match. Ben has definitely improved since our last match, he played some very good shots towards the edges of the court making it difficult for me to return. Our match lasted close to 3 hours so we were both exhausted by the end! It was an enjoyable match with some good tennis from both sides.
