Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Reveal CommentRob Slade bt David Coombs (Aug 15) 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "If I'd been a right handed then David would have won today, because he has a much better attacking forehand. As it is I win games mainly because I'm a leftie and I rely on my opponent's weaker backhand. Doesn't work against strong backhands like Andy Atkinson's and today Mr Coomb's was steady, and he even hit an awesome backhand winner. 2nd set could have gone either way and I won it on just one weak service game by David. Lots of deuces, lots of rallies, good Summer morning, good workout, and good settings. We started at Birkenhead Park but the courts were still v damp and slippy from overnight rain, so we moved to Oxton after David had fallen twice. "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentAndrew Atkinson bt Simon Bell (Aug 15) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Another lovely summers evening and another friendly atmosphere"  -- Andrew
Doug Abraham bt Aingeru Acuña Etxebarria (Aug 12) 6-4, 6-4
Reveal CommentAndrew Atkinson bt Rob Slade (Aug 9) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Friendly match played on a lovely evening "  -- Andrew
  • "For a short time I’m the current champ of the Wirral and Liverpool single league mainly because few play in two leagues. But I’m not likely to win next time coz I was crushed two nights ago by Andy Atkinson 6-0, 6-1. I rarely get beaten this badly so well done to Doug for getting 8 games against him. AA is an AA player though I’d probably give him a ZZ for his red baggy knee length shorts. The only game I got was playing high and deep when he made no attempt to attack, so bearing in mind his weight I’d tire him out doing this. Another AA player in this league is Aingeru Acuna Etxebarrier," -- Andrew
Reveal CommentNigel Hobro bt Simon Bell (Aug 9) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Getability certainly as reported Mr Slade. But another super weapon that obliged me to return the ball always to the other side. The two best shots of the match came from Simon including that V2 class weapon I have referred to. The second set was interrupted by a gaggle of noisy teenagers with loud music who then moved onto the adjacent court at 4;3 to myself, to play football. SIMON HAD TO SERVE AT MY ADVANTAGE HAVING MOVED COURT. that break cost him the game so I echo Rob Slade...beware"  -- Nigel
Reveal CommentRob Slade bt Doug Abraham (Aug 5) 6-4, 7-6 (8-6)

Player Comments:

  • "Excellent very close match. Good tennis and workout. Good weather and location. Lots of long baseline rallies in the second set and tie break, with deadly lobs whenever one of ventured to the net. You always get valid for money with Doug. Deja vu our match at Oxton last Summer when the players on the next stopped to watch and applaud one of our thirty-something shots side-to-side rallies."  -- Rob
Reveal CommentRob Slade bt Nigel Hobro (Aug 4) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "In first set Rob was taken aback but chameleon like adapted his play to go on to win. A laconic style but this leopard can change his spots"  -- Nigel
Reveal CommentDoug Abraham bt David Coombs (Aug 4) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Good match all round in-between the rather heavy showers!"  -- Doug
Reveal CommentRob Slade bt Simon Bell (Aug 2) 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Excellent match and workout! Simon is super fit but hadnt played much tennis recently or any on the super fast carpet courts, hence the 6-0 in the first set. Massive rallies even in the first set. Simon was improving exponentially with each point and he had a game point for 5-5 in the second set. If he had won that I think he would have won the match. Simon is a good and all rounder with a good backhand drop shot (beware). "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentAndrew Atkinson bt Doug Abraham (Aug 1) 7-5, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Thoroughly enjoyable game with plenty of long rallies and both players made each other work hard for the points. A nice start to this league"  -- Andrew

Reveal CommentCraig Lewis bt Peter Ferrett (Aug 14) 6-4, 3-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Another great match with Craig at Birkenhead Park. We both were trying to move our opponents to where we could hit the shots we would like to hit, off a weak shot by the opposition. Craig got me with drives to both corners and some change of depth shots, and was overall very solid in the 1st set. I managed to hit some low angled slices and some heavier slow deep topspin loopers which caused Craig problems in the 2nd set. In the 3rd set Craig was making fewer mistakes than me and was placing shots really well. His first serve was skidding off the court trickily. He ended the match with a disguised short ball that I couldn't get in quick enough to play. There were many multi shot rallies and deuce games over 2 hours. Thanks again Craig. "  -- Peter
Stephen Donnelly bt Roy Wood (Aug 13) 6-1, 6-3

  • "Good match. Started indoors and completed outside with strong wind blowing."  -- Roy
Reveal CommentMarco Candeloro bt Perena Polius (Aug 5) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Played in the gorgeous sunshine at Birkenhead park in great spirit. Thanks for a great match Perena. Look forward to playing again in the near future. "  -- Marco
Reveal CommentCraig Lewis bt Stephen Donnelly (Aug 5) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Played on a lovely sunny morning in birkenhead park. The score does not reflect the game. Some great rallies and when he gets the serve in has a good fast serve. I lobbed quite a lot and sun played it's part. Thanks for the game. "  -- Craig
Reveal CommentPeter Ferrett bt Marco Candeloro (Aug 4) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "I played the more consistently in the first set, after losing the first game, with Marco making more errors than I did through the rest of the set. Marco relaxed at the start of the second set and took a 3-0 lead by hitting well placed controlled deep drives to the corners with enough pace to make things difficult for me. I then went for taking pace off and adding various spins including low slices forcing him to hit up and soft topspin loopers to Marco's backhand which drew some errors out wide. I got it back to 3-3 then I was 4-3 and then Marco forced it to 4-4. At the very end of the set I was more consistent in those slow to mid paced rallies, where we both were trying not to lose rather than win the point. Thanks again Marco."  -- Peter
Reveal CommentRoy Wood bt Perena Polius (Aug 3) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable game. Closer than the score suggests."  -- Roy
Reveal CommentCraig Lewis bt Marco Candeloro (Aug 3) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "This is why I joined the league. A great game played in a friendly manner midweek cant beat it. The score does not do Marco justice as it was a lot closer tgan tge score indicates. A lot of deuce gamrs and plebty of long hard rallies. Well played Marco and look forward to playing again."  -- Craig
Reveal CommentPeter Ferrett bt Thomas Blanchfield (Aug 1) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A pleasant evening match down Marine Park on New Brighton seafront. Because the courts have not been painted for a while, the granite chippings bite into the ball similar to the brick dust dressing on North Cheshire's shale (clay) courts, both emphasising spin. I took advantage of this, giving Tom a lot of low slices and sidespin shots that caused some difficulty. Tom moves well and there were several rallies where I lost the point, through hitting shots where the ball sat up enough and Tom could then pound his forehand drive past me (as Chris Williams said, Tom has a lethal forehand lurking). If Tom gets a few more matches in, I expect his scoring rate to definitely improve as he gets to play his shots. Thanks for an enjoyable match Tom."  -- Peter
Reveal CommentCraig Lewis bt Perena Polius (Jul 30) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Very friendly game played with good spirits. Some good rallies. We even had a ball boy could get used to that. "  -- Craig
