Collapse AllWirral Parks Singles - Round 16 | Thursday 20 September 2018 to Wednesday 14 November 2018 (Midpoint: Wednesday 17 October 2018)
Another strong turnout in the Wirral with more than 70% of matches played across the two groups in this Autumn round - lets keep this up going into 2019. The competition on court was typically close, so thanks to you all for your efforts and well done to the new group champions for digging deep to finish top. Hope to see you all again for more of the same throughout the winter months!
Group Summary:
Dan made an impressive return to the league after some time away, overcoming all of the challenges put up by his opponents to finish six wins to the good and scoring bonus points, to deservedly take pole position. Danny dug deep to clinch victories over Rob, Robert and Craig and with scheduling skills and a couple of walkovers added to his tally too he sneaks ahead of Arturs into the silver. A special mention to Rob for making it onto court for every match - great effort.

- "Good close game. Craig has an excellent forehand when he warms up, and a good lob. Thanks Craig for coming to David Lloyd and sharing the guest fee." -- Rob
Player Comments:
- "Excellent 3.5 hour workout. Neither of us played well I don’t think, too many bad mistakes but a lot of hard fought long ralllies. Henri has a good and strong forehand and I was struggling with a new one so he would win most rallies from the back of the court and I more at the net. Thanks for coming to Cheshire Oaks Henri. As most matches and there warm up last more than 2 hours it’s got to be the cheapest indoor venue (£12.50 each for the guest fee)." -- Rob

Group Summary:
Peter F produced a consistent display of tennis to win three of the four matches he played and with scheduling prowess part of his game too he becomes the undisputed group winner - well played. Marian worked out a way to defeat the champ, producing some strong net play and passing shots to edge their head to head in three closely contested sets. Colin took his match with Peter F the distance too, and the set he won in this epic encounter added to his bonus points and victory over Carl sees him climb into second.

- "Played early afternoon at Birkenhead Park. Peter B has quite hard serves and ground strokes, unfortunately today these were at times going just long (within 6 of the lines). If Peter had had more consistent shots today I think the score would've been very different. My on-the-rise and half volley shots came off quite well today as did some drop shots and lobs, these both had to be good or Peter would angle away volleys and smash overheads. I also had to move Peter around from side to side and in and out to stop him hitting winning forehand drives off my weak shots. A cross-court topspin 2-handed backhand and cross-court forehand slices in both a backspin and particularly a sidespin variant helped me a lot today. Thanks for the match Peter" -- Peter

- "Played on a partly sunny morning at Birkenhead Park. Marian is a consistent player with some very good shots, I lost the 1st set getting into rallies with slightly topspinning shots from both sides, here Marian was much better at these type of shots, moving me around then placing his shot deep. I mainly did sliced backhand and forehands in the 2nd set, varying pace: taking it off, then hitting a faster one to Marians feet. These had to be good or Marian would hit flattish passing shots by me with some pace or come to the net and volley winners. I was 4-2 up In the 3rd set but couldn't keep the difficulty of my shots up, I did a few good drop and lobs but not enough to keep Marian from the net (he punished poor drop shots) Well played Marian" -- Peter

- "Played pm on the outside courts at Bebington Oval, the sun coming out after a morning's rain. The 1st set was very close, Carl beat me with some excellent serves that came off the ground low with some pace, also if I didn't do anything with my shots and just poked a mid court rally ball back in play Carl would come in and put it away. At the end of the !st set and in the 2nd I managed to move Carl about more, alternating a cross court two handed topspin backhand with a one hand low backhand down the line slice drive with side , this latter got me several points where Carl had to hit it up and his shot might then go long. (again if I didn't do awkward shots Carl would get in and volley or smash balls away for winners) Thanks for match Carl" -- Peter

- "A warm, pleasantly sunny Indian summer day at Birkenhead Park. It was 4 all in the first set and then Colin upped his game. I have to try to give him difficult shots when he's at the net otherwise he'll just put the ball away to win the point. In the 2nd and 3rd set I took advantage of an intermittently gusty wind: taking the pace off shots and put varying spins on. These balls would then be also at the mercy of the wind. I got several points as the wind gusted and changed the position of these softly played balls, just as Colin was going to take his shot. I was possibly more consistent in the latter half of the match, Colin unfortunately had several of his, usually dangerous, low backhand slices go in the trams. Thanks for a fun match Col." -- Peter
