How the tennis leagues began
Local Tennis Leagues Ltd was founded by and is run by Sally Kinnes and Nigel Billen. Both Nigel and Sally have a background in journalism and Nigel was editor of ACE Tennis Magazine for nearly five years.
"The idea for a tennis league in a local park began as a way of improving our own game," says Sally. "We set up the first, fledgling league on Highbury Fields in May 2005. It took off. Since then, many hundreds of people have taken part, made friends and improved their game."
Now in its fourteenth year and a regular feature of Highbury Fields' life, the Highbury Fields League led to dozens of others all over the UK. As of today, there are nearly 200 leagues nationwide.
The tennis league concept is approved by and affiliated to the LTA, the governing body of tennis in the UK. Local Tennis Leagues is registered as a Place to Play with the LTA and entered into a four year partnership agreement with the LTA in 2015.
Our Tennis Philosophy
Although there are plenty of leagues and ladders in clubs if you seek them out, there's not always a regular league for players who play on one set or a few neighbouring sets of local public tennis courts. Having one, we have discovered, helps build a sense of community, puts local players in touch with each other, and gives people a way of seeing themselves improve.
Our aim is to launch more leagues wherever there is a need, concentrating on public tennis courts where finding opponents can be difficult.

Do you know a set of courts in search of a tennis league?
We are on the look out for new locations to establish leagues. If you know of somewhere that would benefit from a well-organised, sociable adult tennis league, let us know here. You can see all our existing leagues here.
