Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentAli Hajeeh Ali bt Joseph Barton (Mar 11) 6-4, 2-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A very competitive game with wide variety of shots that could've gone either way. Almost every game was close and approached to deuce which shows how close it was. I managed to clinch the first set then Joseph played well by approaching the net granting him the 2nd set. The final set took almost forever to end as the games were close but I managed to win it in the end. Credits to Joseph for his effort throughout the game. "  -- Ali
Reveal CommentJames Gray bt Joe Charlton (Mar 11) 6-7 (6-8), 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A match with countless lobs from both of us. The first set was a grueling, hard fought battle with several deuce games that went right down to the wire and had to be decided with a tie break. The second set couldn't be further from that; I was demolished in what felt like 5 or 10 minutes. I rallied in the third and the set went to 4-4 but James was the better player and ended it at 6-4. A deserving win and credit to him for playing two matches in a day. "  -- Joe
Reveal CommentStuart Mcgowan bt James Gray (Mar 11) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A little wet but no wind which makes a change for the normally gusty ex park. James’s first game back after an extended lay off and my decent form held so the score line flatters me a little. Good fun though. "  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentJoe Charlton bt Ali Hajeeh Ali (Feb 25) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Ali consistently hit great drop shots with a lot of backspin, but I love to be at the net so it turned out to be a good style match up for me. Still a fun match in good conditions, if a bit cold"  -- Joe
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Joe Charlton (Feb 18) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Another enjoyable match with Joe, although the neutral would argue this didn't quite live up to the tension and drama of our previous league encounter in December. The match started very evenly with both players struggling to hold serve thanks to some strong returning. Joe took a 4-3 lead due to some impressive volleying, but I was able to prevail from some long games with many deuces to fight back to take the set 6-4. The second set began in similarly tight fashion, reaching 2-2 . A couple of tense games followed but I was able to take a 4-2 lead, before getting through the final 2 games in slightly more straightforward fashion to win 6-4 6-2. Enjoyable match and decent conditions for February. Relieved to sneak the victory."  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentStuart Mcgowan bt Joe Charlton (Feb 16) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Really nice day for a game and some really nice tennis played by both. I was hitting really well off both sides today and found some consistency with my serve, although Joe put up much more of a fight than the scoreline would suggest."  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentJoe Charlton bt Aitor Lopez De Uralde (Feb 11) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Cold and windy but a fun match. I was on good form and Aitor's consistency let him down, so it was a match that could definitely have gone the other way on another occasion. I look forward to next time!"  -- Joe
Reveal CommentStuart Mcgowan bt Ali Hajeeh Ali (Feb 11) 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Very windy today which seemed to blow everything into my forehand. After Ali had adjusted to the conditions and began to employ some slice and drop shots to good effect he had me worried that a third set was on the cards, but luckily I was able to regain some composure and close out the match."  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentStuart Mcgowan bt Aitor Lopez De Uralde (Feb 10) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Quick relocation to leazes after originally intending to play at the Ex (those courts really are terrible if any rain comes down). Really fun match with aitors backhand really firing and my forehand doing the same. A faster start for me meant I was able to take the first before aitor had got settled. The second set was much more nip and tuck; 2-0 start for me, then 3 games on the spin for aitor to get me worried, before finding some rhythm on my serve again to close it out."  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentAli Hajeeh Ali bt Aitor Lopez De Uralde (Feb 4) 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A close and a competitive game that could've gone either way. Aitor managed to win the first set then I equalised by clinching the second set in the tiebreak. The final set was won by me after leading 2 games after breaking Aitor's serve. "  -- Ali

Group Summary:

Matthew was undeniably our champion in this group as he was able to play and beat everyone else in the group - an amazing feat! However, it wasn't such plain sailing as it seems as though Bryan, our runner up, actually managed to finish on the same amount of points due to those extra special bonus points! Unfortunately for Bryan he was unable to beat Matthew though he did push him in the second set and nearly forced a tiebreak - the momentum could have swung should he have won that! Lots of matches were played in this group which is really great to see, so well done all for your great efforts! A warm welcome to Chris and welcome back to Bryan and Joti - what a round!

Player Comments:

  • "With the clocks going back an hour and the sun shining, it almost felt like summer when I was sat in the office. Despite the temperature not quite living up to that expectation, it really was great to be able to play tennis on an evening! Peter started the first set really strongly, going one game up and putting me under a lot of pressure with his consistency and weight of shot. The second set got off to an even tighter start, with the first 5 games all going to deuce. "  -- Bryan
Chris Stanworth bt Peter McCue (Mar 21) 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) Peter McCue Retired
Matthew Davis bt Joti Ahir (Mar 13) 6-3, 6-3
Reveal CommentBryan Gillingham bt Chris Stanworth (Mar 11) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Great match, filled with a lot of very tight rallies. Chris kept fighting for every point and was really unlucky not to pick up more games. Pick of the games came at 4-1 in the first set, which I managed to sneak after what felt like 20 deuce points! "  -- Bryan
Reveal CommentJoti Ahir bt Chris Stanworth (Mar 10) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Even match with some epic rallies at a damp exhibition park. Chris's game clicked in the second set, which saw him take 3 games in a row to draw level at 3-3. However, after narrowly taking the next game I was able to hold on and see out the match. "  -- Joti

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentJoti Ahir bt Peter McCue (Mar 7) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A pleasure to squeeze in a midweek match, with the sun even making a surprise appearance. An even match with Peter's well placed shots finding both lines meaning I was doing the lion's share of the running. Standards dipped somewhat on both sides in the second set, with Peter allowing me back into a couple of games from him being in a game point position, which ultimately cost him the set. "  -- Joti
Matthew Davis bt Peter McCue (Feb 25) 6-3, 6-3
Matthew Davis bt Chris Stanworth (Feb 25) 6-2, 6-3
Chris Stanworth bt Paulie Wakefield (Feb 18) 6-1, 6-1
Reveal CommentMatthew Davis bt Bryan Gillingham (Feb 18) 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Nice morning for some tennis! First set was a bit one sided but the second set was very competitive with Bryan getting off to a great start and actually served for the second set, I managed to win the remaining 4 games which had some great rallies in to steal the final set and match, credit to Bryan who started slowly but turned it round to make it a really great match "  -- Matthew
Matthew Davis bt Paulie Wakefield (Feb 4) Walkover
Reveal CommentBryan Gillingham bt Joti Ahir (Feb 3) 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Really fun match against Joti with pretty much every game going to 30-30 or deuce. Joti threatened a remarkable comeback at 5-1 down in the second set, but I held my nerve to serve out the match. I forgot to write a report for last weeks match against Paulie. Also another really good match, with Paulie struggling after an operation a couple of weeks earlier. Looking forward to playing both again soon!"  -- Bryan
Reveal CommentPeter McCue bt Paulie Wakefield (Jan 29) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable game played on a sunny day and as usual at Armstrong Park on such days there was sun in the eyes at one end ! Two good sets of tennis however "  -- Peter
Bryan Gillingham bt Paulie Wakefield (Jan 28) 6-0, 6-0
Reveal CommentJoti Ahir bt Paulie Wakefield (Jan 28) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable match on a windy morning in Leazes Park. Both players getting back into the swing of things after some time out meant some frustrating unforced errors on both sides, but standards improved throughout the course of the match. Thanks for a good game. "  -- Joti
