Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Collapse AllBath Singles - Round 5 | Thursday 11 April 2019 to Wednesday 5 June 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 8 May 2019)

It's great to see this still-new league grow and have two groups for the first time. 60% of all possible matches were played which is very respectable and is partly down because one player had to withdraw. We are very much looking forward to Bath getting its new courts at Sydney Gardens and to the league growing still more!

Group Summary:

Defending champ Oliver retains his crown, finishing 4 wins to the good, but both Derek and runner up Terry did their best to make things difficult and pushed him to three sets. Congratulations to him and many thanks for the great write ups: it made us smile to have the fashion reports as well as news of Alastair's "newly acquired Thor weighted hammer racket of 360g that had me pinned to the baseline"! Many thanks. Full credit to Giles for saving six match points in his match v Terry and thanks to everyone for many this such a competitive but generous-spirited group.

Final Rankings:

  1. Oliver Millett [W4] 8 WINNER
  2. Terry Gillman 8.1 [W3, L1] 7 RUNNER UP
  3. Giles Pocock 9.1 [W1, L2] 2
  4. Alastair Matthews 8.2 [L3] 1
  5. Derek Mclauchlan 9.1 [L2] 1

Player Comments:

  • "Adidas French open outfits donned by us both for this matchup of winner takes the spoils of Local Leagues Champ! Myself “Burgundy red when I’m a head!” A sharp Scarlet red worn by Terry. An opening first service game of 15 mins set the tone of points were not going to be given away cheap. Who had the better chess game held key plan to manipulating the challenging opponent. Winning the first set exposed over confidence on my part allowing Terry to claw back from 5-2 down to take the second 7-5. A valuable lesson on patience over brawn as well as holding serve paved way for a strong 3rd set win. Great match played in the best of spirits! "  -- Oliver
Reveal CommentTerry Gillman bt Giles Pocock (May 31) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Phew what a tough match! Our determination not to make an error led to some marathon rallies. This was one of those matches that could have gone either way. The points were hard fought with both of us battling away. The last game of the match typified so many games in both sets with neither of us wanting to concede an inch. You saved 6 match points before I finally managed to get over the line on my 7th match point. Very well played Giles and thanks for yet another good match between us. Terry"  -- Terry
Reveal CommentTerry Gillman bt Alastair Matthews (May 24) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Another closely contested match between us Alastair. Some really close games with both of us probing the other out with a variety of shot sequences. Your flat first serves were too powerful for me to take a swing and as a result all I could do was to block them back. The match was played in a completely fair spirit with both of us giving the other the benefit of any doubt when the ball appeared to catch the outside of the line. I look forward to our next match and hope you enjoy your remaining matches, Terry"  -- Terry
Reveal CommentOliver Millett bt Giles Pocock (May 19) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "It should be outdoor season but the chants of raindrops vetoed us not to playing in the open. Playing your absolute doppelgänger doesn’t surface often. The friendly niceties ended with the good luck handshake. Giles opened up a 2-love lead with a perfect assortment of power, style & majestic volleying of the Boris Becker 1980’s era. The remainder of the set, championed us both to hitting balls with an array of powerful ground strokes. This nail biter of a set, concluded with a uncharacteristic loss of Giles’s serve & a tight hold of 6 deuces for me to take a slim advantage. Second set was a tail of one player holding their serve and the other not. An enjoyable slug fest played in respectful spirits of how the game should be played. "  -- Oliver
Reveal CommentTerry Gillman bt Derek Mclauchlan (May 19) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "This was a very tight match with loads of long rallies and long deuce games making it cagey and great fun. One particular point in the second set that we both agreed was about 30 shots left us gasping for breath and we apologise to the ltl but I think we exceeded our allotted 25 seconds before starting the next point! You single handed sliced backed is a killer but also a classy shot. Many thanks for hosting such an enjoyable match Derek. Terry"  -- Terry

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentOliver Millett bt Derek Mclauchlan (May 4) 4-6, 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Taking a player on in their own back yard, means there will be no gifts offered by the host. The midnight showers left the courts slightly damp and slippery, even though they appeared to be dry we initially found them tricky to negotiate. Derek’s reinvented new style and powerful serves dished out deserved punishment racing into a 4 love lead! It was windy and we both slipped regularly early doors but refused this to affect an exciting game of tennis. Both of us had an ‘A’ game at the net combined with the odd passing shot to add mystery and flair. A three set thriller was what the doctor ordered as well a visit to the local hospital to patch up the cuts, sprains and bruises picked up in this battle. I am really sore but enjoyed this match."  -- Oliver
Giles Pocock bt Alastair Matthews (May 3) 6-4, 5-7, 6-1
Reveal CommentOliver Millett bt Alastair Matthews (Apr 19) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • " The previous days of bad weather had me reserving the bubble for a ‘Good Friday’ match. Unfortunately the hottest day of the year had all the other out door Excel Park courts fully booked. We entered the cauldron & played familiar rallies as well as outrageous winners from previous meeting. Alastair’s youthful speed, flair & imagination continued many points to draw out games to deuce! Today was all about the serve & fitness. I was lucky to have that in my locker to duel against Alastair’s newly acquired Thor weighted hammer racket of 360g, that had me pinned to the baseline. The worry is he will be even stronger the next time we meet. He will also be one of the strong players in this round of the tennis league."  -- Oliver

Group Summary:

No bonus points in this group, so it all came down to the tennis. Chris was the only player to finished the round undefeated, with 3 wins out of three and takes the top spot this time. Bill as not too far behind, and good to hear of Sarah fighting back from 4-0 down in the second set in her match v Chris. A pity even more matches weren't played but well done all in any event.

  3. Simon Brown 9.2 [W1] 2
