This is how it works

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Players are grouped by ability, so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA
  • For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three tie break sets; if a set reaches 6 games all, it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are grouped according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Everyone in the group plays each other once during the round
  • You get one point for each set you win
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of each group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winners get a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of the groups (and sometimes the top two) are promoted for the next round; those who come bottom (and sometimes the bottom two) are demoted

"Thoroughly enjoying it so far... didn't know I was so unfit. Can't wait for the next game,"

Kevin Jones

"It was a good feeling to be back on the court.  I hope everybody from our group enjoyed the competition and I wish them good luck in the next tournament,"

Florin Nistor

"This has been a brilliant idea, and the best thing that’s happened to me for many years, sport-wise. I’ve always loved playing tennis, but haven’t had anyone to play with for years. Apart from  joining a club, it’s so difficult meeting anyone to play. I’ve had some fantastic games and all have been very enjoyable, win or lose. Everyone I’ve spoken to feel the same, so well done to both of you,"

Richard Lake

"Having struggled for a game locally, I was happy to find this league. Everyone in the league was warm on arrival and all the games were friendly.  I met some great people in the group.
If you want to play competitively, it doesn't matter what standard you are and /or how nervous you are about playing strangers. I highly recommend entering these leagues as it's a great place to enjoy a game and meet like-minded people for games in the future.  Well played to everyone in the league."

Richard Washbrook

"Playing this round has been so much fun and has definitely sharpened my game.  Looking forward to the next one,"

Jean-Paul Dowding

"I have really enjoyed playing matches. Thank you very much for organising the league and making the arrangements for us players to feel it's 'Wimbledon' every round....."

David Bown

Player Comments:

  • "Tarmac courts at Queen's Park were in great condition even though it was frosty! Good decision by John to play the match there. First set was close exchanging breaks, I was just a little more consistent than John which helped me take first set. In the second set I managed to get my nose in front, John was unlucky and actually played well. "  -- Joshua
Reveal CommentJohn Harrison v Tony Fowkes (Dec 16) 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 2-3 TBC

Player Comments:

  • "This was a very close match played on a foggy evening under flood lights. Tony started well in the first set with many close rallies, eventually needing a tie breaker to separate us. The second set again was closely fought, played within eerie surroundings as the fog built up from the ground, with this set going John's way. Moving to the deciding third set Tony edged ahead at 3-2 (and 30 love down in the sixth game) before a bad slip on the wet side of the astro turf resulted in a bad strain to Tony's knee. At this point the game was suspended and we hope to finish if off at a later time....hoping that Tony can make a quick recovery! "  -- John

Reveal CommentRicardas Lisovskis bt Faizel Ashfaq (Dec 7) 4-6, 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "It was very close long match. It lasted almost two hours. Faizel played really well and it looks it was a lucky escape for me. After losing the first set I had to fight very well to stay in the match what was not easy. The third set started evenly, both of us winning our own serves games, but then I had few breaks and found myself in the lead by 5:1. However, Faizel fought very well and caught up with me 5:5, but eventually and luckily for me I was able to close the set 7:5. Ricardas"  -- Ricardas

Player Comments:

  • "Great match and really good court, first set was really close and some good rallies we exchanged breaks but Richardas served it out well. Second set was another close one again we exchanged breaks before Richardas served it out in great style! Thanks for the match really enjoyed it!"  -- Joshua

Reveal CommentMartin Copland bt Ben Friman (Dec 22) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Playing Ben for the second time in these leagues was just as hard as the first time! Every game seemed to go to deuces and the match really could have gone either way. It was decided in each set my a couple of lucky strikes or unforced errors and the scoreline could easily have been reversed. Thanks again for a great match!"  -- Martin
Reveal CommentMartin Copland bt David Bown (Dec 21) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "The score in no way reflects some of the close games that David and I had. Many games went to deuce and David had lots of opportunities to convert these. Next time we play David, it could well be a different story. Great to meet you and have a lovely xmas!"  -- Martin
Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt Martin Copland (Dec 20) 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "I felt comfortable in the first set and went 3-1 up and was hitting the ball well, however Martin returned everything with some crazy long rallys and he hit some great winners. It eventually went into a tie breaker which Martin controlled throughout. This was a great set with both of us playing our best. Early on in the second, I broke Martins serve which felt like about 20 deuces which was a big game. Despite the scoreline of the last 2 sets each game was as tough and tight as the first set. A fantastic match to play in and in good spirit. Shame there had to be a loser. Well played Martin! "  -- Richard
Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt David Bown (Dec 11) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "We were really lucky with the weather it was dry sunny after David conducted a court inspection earlier on in the morning. An enjoyable match David deserved to win a few more games, he chased everything down and won some great points. "  -- Richard
Jose Luis Cerezo bt Richard Washbrook (Dec 10) 6-1, 6-1
Reveal CommentBen Friman bt David Bown (Dec 9) 7-5, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "An entertaining match played in good conditions on a rather slippery court."  -- Ben
Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt Ben Friman (Nov 26) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Ben kindly arrived with a broom and prepared the best looking court at the park! The two sets was very close with most of games going to deuce or 30. We had some great rallys even with the threat of hitting a slippery patch. Great match, really enjoyed it. Good luck Ben with your other matches."  -- Richard
