"I have just completed my first season in the Bristol Tennis League and had a great time. As a player with no previous singles match experience I found the group I was in the perfect level despite my losses. All the matches were closer than the score line suggested and I hope that I would be placed in a similar group in the future. Thank you very much for organising an accessible and friendly league."

"I was a first timer and loved it . I have told a lot of people about it and I really enjoyed meeting different people at different courts . I have lived in Bristol for 20 years and did not know of some tennis courts very near to me!  Thank you for the very high level of organisation."

Player Comments:

  • "What a day for it!! David played a superb game knocking me down 3-0 within the first 15 minutes. Just about managed to keep my head above water for a pacey, lob-filled tiebreak. Sadly, confusion about match format and court bookings meant the 2nd set was conceded, though I have a sneaking suspicion Dave might have bought it level had we played on. Look forward to another match soon-, bring the same weather please!"  -- Jamie

Reveal CommentNye Harries bt Simon Brown (Apr 15) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "This round feels it’s all about trying to pick up some good tennis habits again. Simon is an old BTL ‘foe’ who it was great to see again, but maybe I had an advantage having already sneaked a few friendlies in, post lockdown. The score was not a fair reflection of respective effort but on this occasion my baseline game outgunned Simon’s guile and precision (well, that’s what I told myself afterwards). Anyway, it was great to be back on court, another enjoyable game and I look forward to the next rematch against Simon. I also appreciated swapping tips on prospective league opponents....c’mon, we all do it - yeah?"  -- Nye

Reveal CommentDavid Lane bt Timothy Oates (May 7) 7-6 (7-5), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A really tight match with a very long first set that swung in Tim's favour up to 5-2, but I managed to claw back to the tie-break (just) in a set of tiny margins. The second set was similar up until 3-3 with more tightly contested games, but I managed to come back from a break down, win game 7 and then close it out with some good serving. Tim played some brilliant tennis and we were really evenly matched. Look forward to playing again some time!"  -- David
Reveal CommentPippa Brady bt Stuart Younger (May 3) 6-1, 6-4

Reveal CommentDavid Lane bt Morteza Alibabaei (Apr 25) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A sunny but very blustery morning and don't think either of us enjoyed the wind! Morteza has a killer topspin forehand and broke me in the first game, but I regrouped and got more consistent for the rest of the match. Thanks for a very sociable and friendly game Morteza and good luck with the rest of your matches."  -- David

Reveal CommentDavid Lane bt Richard Morris (Apr 18) 4-6, 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Richard was super consistent in the first set and had me in trouble at 4-1, taking me to umpteen deuces on all my service games, before I strung a few games together but lost serve on game 10 for him to take it. Then I broke in the first game of the second set, got serving consistently, and played a more defensive percentage game which somehow wound up being 12 games in a row and the match. Beautiful weather for it, and a very tight first set. Thanks Richard and good luck with the rest of your matches."  -- David
Reveal CommentTimothy Oates bt Stuart Younger (Apr 16) 5-7, 6-0, [10-7]

Player Comments:

  • "Great game, thanks Stu! Great comeback from you in the first set. I was lucky to pull away in the second (the score doesn't reflect the huge number of deuces), but if we'd had time I suspect it would have been a nail-biting final set."  -- Timothy

Reveal CommentDavid Lane bt Stuart Younger (Apr 9) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Stuart was returning to tennis for the first time since lockdown but played some brilliant passing shots and retrievals in our match. We were pretty even until game 4 of set 1, which went to about 9 deuces as he fought to hold serve! I just edged it for 3-1 but it was still close at 4-2 before I stretched out a lead. I relaxed a bit in the second set and played some better tennis, though we had plenty more deuces so it was closer than the scoreline suggests! A friendly match, and looking forward to a social game later down the line. Thanks Stuart for getting back into the swing of it on a first league match!"  -- David

Player Comments:

  • "Booked up at Commbe Dingle as we were struggling to find any other courts across the city. They put us on a gravel playground type surface first up, which I thought was pretty cheeky for £8 an hour! This made the first set an absolute lottery with the ball bouncing all over the place. We found a better court for most of the second which made for a much better game. Andy is one of the more aggresive players in the league, regularly coming to the net and hitting a number of superb winners down the line, many of which I couldn't get close to. My service game just about got me through this match. Best of luck in your remaining games, Andy!"  -- Joshua

Adam played some great tennis, and we had many gruelling rallies on the backhand and forehand side. Player Comments:

It turned into a slightly hesitant who makes the mistake first. Great serving by both sides with some fast skidding serves. I got caught by some lovely lob shots. It was great playing and hopefully we will meet again. "  -- Simon

Reveal CommentMichael Kennedy bt Eamonn Connaughton (Apr 6) 6-4, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "As always a fantastic match with Eamonn. Lots of great rallies, plenty of Eamonn's signature drop shots, and a lung-busting run around. Add to that the sunshine, wind, rain, and snow flurry that gave us four seasons in an hour. Sometimes it felt like we were playing against the weather as much as each other. Thanks Eamonn for a great afternoon!"  -- Michael
