  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Players are grouped by ability, so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA
  • For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three tie break sets; if a set reaches 6 games all, it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are grouped according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Everyone in the group plays each other once during the round
  • You get one point for each set you win
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of each group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winners get a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of the groups (and sometimes the top two) are promoted for the next round; those who come bottom (and sometimes the bottom two) are demoted

Collapse AllClapham Common Singles - Round 36 | Thursday 13 October 2016 to Wednesday 7 December 2016 (Midpoint: Wednesday 9 November 2016)

A great way to close the year in Clapham. This was a great round to observe and we hope it was fun for you to play in. Impressive as always was the good-natured fair play shown by participants and the commitment to getting matches played - and we know that is not always easy!

Group Summary:

A triumphal return to Clapham for past group winner Simon who won all of his matches in straight sets, but it was closer than it looks! Both Ali and Ben stepped it up in seconds sets at got close to forcing deciders. Well done too to Clare whose excellent match scheduling helped her earn bonus points and the runner-up spot!

Group Summary:

Disappointingly few matches played in this group... we do know it can be hard to get matches set up and played, but please do ask us to help. If we can we will. Carlos, a seasoned hand, managed to squeeze a point from his loss to Ranulf and that in the end was enough to allow him to claim the group. At least the two matches played were really well contested!

Does Michael bring a packed lunch to his matches? Three of his matches went the distance, including his battle with our group champ, Joseph. This was an excellent group. The only thing it was missing was the head to head between Joseph and runner-up Matthew - it would have been the decider!

When Jon beat Alex early in the round our champ this time must have know he would have to dig deep to have a chance of taking the group. And that's what Alex did, battling through a series of close matches. In the end he topped the points list and won more matches than anyone else in the group! Well done Alex - and runner-up Jon.

Player Comments:

  • "Managed just 6 games before we were beaten by the rain! To be completed next weekend...me (Alex) to serve"  -- Alex
  • "This was another tough match-up and Richard had me running all over the court for most of it! I lost count of the times I was either 30-0 or 0-30 down (or even 0-40) but I somehow always found a way back. Richard was very unlucky not to at least get a point here but it was a very enjoyable game," -- Alex
Reveal CommentAlex Beaumont bt Joe Lane (Nov 9) 6-4, 4-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Couldn't be more even... Great match so far with high energy tennis...unfortunately ran out of time to complete today. Probably just as well as we were both pretty knackered!"  -- Alex
  • When Joe broke my serve at 3-3 in the final set, I thought I was in trouble. I broke straight back to go 4-4 but then found myself 0-40 down on my serve. I somehow dragged myself through that to go 5-4 up, when I then broke Joe's serve again to win the match! Unfortunately it ended on a double fault which didn't do the match justice because, as the score shows, it was a closely fought match and Joe definitely could have won this. Joe is a great player to play against - I really had to up my consistency to get through this one.

Player Comments:

  • "We stopped just after 2 hours at 1 set all. TBC with me to serve (putting this as a reminder James or I'll forget!)"  -- Alex
  • Fittingly, this match went right to the wire as the score shows. Great match up and we both felt we played a good third set. This very easily could have gone the other way, especially as James had been 4-2 up in the final set. I took it to 6-5 but James had two game points to take it to a 3rd set tie-break. I took it deuce, and then match-point. On second serve on match point, the match was interrupted and very nearly stopped because we had gone over time and the court was invaded by 20 people on a coaching course!! Luckily, they let us finish the point but, to add pressure, they all watched us play it out. I was relieved to win the point and avoid the final set tie-break! Thanks for the game James - - definitely pushed me to my limit!
Joe Lane bt Richard Zhou (Oct 22) 2-6, 6-4, 6-3
Reveal CommentJon Rutter bt James Thomson (Oct 22) 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "A really close game played over 2 separate days. Some long rallies and lots of service breaks (as usual) culminating in a tense final set tie break player over 3 courts as we'd run out of our own time," -- Jon
Reveal CommentJon Rutter bt Alex Beaumont (Oct 9) 1-6, 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "My third match in a row which is TBC after being tied 1-1! Jon came back well in the 2nd set and we didn't have time to finish...so looking forward to completing soon. Jon to serve..."  -- Alex
  • As anticipated another very close game with Alex. We finished off the game on a very slippy court in kennington park after an even first 2 sets. Some good baseline rallies and lots of deuces meant we almost didn't finish the match on the second time of asking either.

It was super tough for us both playing in sodden T-shirts under the floodlights and with nothing to use to dry off. Hats off to Rory who wouldn't accept my concession. He played a blinder staying in every rally. I am not even sure if i would class this kind of encounter as tennis. I think we may have created a new sport! Group Summary:

A great lesson here in the importance of getting matches set up and played - even if you can't win them all. In a great battle, Patryk got the better of Terry but in all Terry played three more matches. So, including the point for the set won in that three-set loss, Terry ended up with a really impressive 14 points (bonus points added naturally!) and well clear of the chasing pack in the table, including his nemesis, group runner-up Patryk.
