Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

"Many thanks for everything - really enjoyed the league!"

David Jobanputra

"Today I played my last match of the tournament and managed to win it! I'm over the moon.  It was great fun, I met really nice people and I can't wait to play in the next round! You guys are doing a great job putting people together to play tennis. I used to play loads many years ago but stopped playing as I couldn't  find anyone to play with; you brought the excitement back to me and I want to say a massive thanks for organising the leagues. Well done guys!"

Collapse AllClapham Common Singles - Round 45 | Thursday 6 September 2018 to Wednesday 14 November 2018 (Midpoint: Wednesday 10 October 2018)

The closure of the Clapham Common courts for a period of refurbishment resulted in a lower turnout that we would have liked in this Autumn round, but thanks to everyone who got involved for your efforts to schedule matches elsewhere. Well done to the new group champions and we hope to see you next time for lots of tennis on the new courts!

Group Summary:

There was much less action on court than we would liked in group one with only four of the possible matches played. Johnny and Gareth showed what could have been with an incredibly close three set battle in their head to head. The congratulations go to Vincent who won both of the matches he played to secure his second title on the bounce. Miles pips Johnny to the silver thanks to fewest games conceded.

Final Rankings:

  1. Vincent Rouget [W2] 4 WINNER
  2. Miles Porter [W1, L1] 2 RUNNER UP
  3. Johnny Croft [W1] 2

Group Summary:

Several no shows unfortunately reduced the number of matches played in group two, nevertheless we still have a champion to crown from the tennis played. Joshua showed no signs of nerves on his first league appearance, notching up strong wins in both of his matches to finish in top spot. David emerged victorious from a marathon match with Adam and picked up a point from a topsy turvy encounter with Julian to come home as the runner up by a whisker.

Group Summary:

Nearly half of all the matches played went the distance in this very competitive group, so it is perhaps of little surprise that the race for the gold went right to the wire too. Thomas and Ignacio finished tied on nine points apiece at the top, and it therefore all came down to their head to head, the last match of the round. This was a fitting finale, with Ignacio fighting back from a set down to force a decider, but ultimately it was Thomas who found that extra gear to emerge with the victory and secure the prize. Well played all.

Final Rankings:

  1. Thomas Fraser 10.2 [W3, L1] 9 includes 2 bonus points WINNER
  2. Ignacio De Calonje 9.2 [W3, L2] 9 includes 2 bonus points RUNNER UP

Player Comments:

  • "Tough first floodlit match of the late season. Sean got off to a flier and the second set was very tight. I then won the longest game ever on Sean’s serve at 1-0 up in the decider, then capitalised and raced to a 5-0 lead. It went to 5-3 before i closed it out... then the lights went out 1 minute later! Cheers for the game Sean"  -- Pete
Reveal CommentIgnacio De Calonje bt Jamie Potter (Oct 7) 6-1, 7-5

Reveal CommentPete Przednowek bt Christopher Blackburn (Oct 6) 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "What can i say... most surreal tennis match I have ever played. Weather report said it should stay dry... weather report lied. The Tooting Bec carpet court soaked up the rain nicely for the first 2 sets... but by the 3rd there were big puddles everywhere and it came down to court management. Very tight first set, with some good tennis from both sides despite the conditions. Ball was staying incredibly low and skiddy. I managed to find another gear in the 2nd set, and 3rd set was damage limitation! Thanks for the match Chris."  -- Pete

Player Comments:

  • "Tough 3 set encounter! Couldnt find an answer in the first set with spin and slice coming at me from all angles, but dug deep and found a way in the end. Cheers for the game Jamie"  -- Pete

Group Summary:

Christoph experienced the "ups and downs" of tennis in this round, but crucially he managed to secure wins from his three very close contests to finish on top of the podium. Nigel was hot on Christoph's heels throughout and had their "extremely tight" match gone the other way it would have been a different story, but as it is he has to settle for second this time. It would be great to see everyone make it off the start line next time.

Group Summary:

There were three set thrillers all over the scoreboard in group four, which made choosing the match of the group a very difficult task - a pat on the back to you all. One of these marathon matches proved to be decisive in the destination of the title too. Front runners Zied and Jordan played "three hours of intense tennis where deuce was heard in almost every game", however there can only be one winner and in the end it was Zied who just clinched the crucial break in the decider to claim the prize by the smallest of margins.

Reveal CommentDavid Morley bt Charlie Bone (Sep 12) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A really fun match as we had completely different styles- Charlie had a very aggressive brand of tennis whereas mine is a bit more defensive. This made for some really interesting rallies in which we covered all parts of the court. We managed to get in a really high quality match despite the terrible state of the court (Damn you court 8!)"  -- David

Group Summary:

It was neck and neck between Jirina and Barney coming down the home straight as both players finished with an identical win/loss record. Now Jirina may have lost her first match of the round to Richard, but the point she picked up for winning a set, thanks in part to her "well placed shots", gives her tally the extra boost she needs to move ahead of Barney into the lead. A shout out to Michael too for playing every match and earning a bonus prize.
