Group Summary:

A brilliant defence of his Group One title sees Darren earn his fourth Dundee group win, but it couldn't have been much tighter! Not only did Aidan, Pete and Paul all take sets off Darren in three excellent matches, but Nathan played one more match in all meaning that was able to equal the champ's points tally. That meant it was all down to their head-to-head in which Darren prevailed. Wonderful commentaries really brought this excellent group alive - well done all!

Player Comments:

  • "This was a tough match. Aidan's defence was tough to crack. I really had to mix my game up and hit softer balls to stop his momentum. He managed to get back some tough forehand shots which made the rallies go on for a life time. I really thought I lost this one but I somehow managed to claw back some vital points. I really enjoyed our match Aidan. Thanks "  -- Douglas

Player Comments:

  • "Another tough match today. JP definitely the more attacking and ambitious player but I played my defensive game very well getting balls back and managing to stay in the rallies. Was tough to hit winners today as JP's defence was also solid, got some joy with short balls drawing JP into the net then hitting the passing shot. Also used lob returns pretty effectively today which helped me recover in points. JP fought hard until the very end and I had multiple match points before eventually closing the win out. Thanks for the match."  -- Darren
  • "Darren was just far too solid for me to break down today and I was regularly forced into trying to take balls earlier than I wanted to or hit harder than I was comfortably able to do do with any consistency or accuracy," -- JP

Player Comments:

  • "I played my best match of the round so far today against a quality player who has had impressive results. My court coverage and defence won me the match today as I always made Nathan play an extra shot and I think the pressure led to errors. My defence is probably the strongest part of my game and today I managed to get balls back in court from difficult positions and did well to stay in lots of rallies. It was not as easy as the score suggests and at times I had to hit some great shots to win the point, including a few backhand passing shots. Unlucky today Nathan thanks for the match, look forward to the next one."  -- Darren
Reveal CommentKenneth Lindsay bt Malcolm Farnan (Jul 31) 6-4, 2-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Was a great match on a muggy evening at Victoria Park. It was the most enjoyable match in a long while for me; closely contested, some long baseline exchanges, and really it could have gone either way. First 2 sets were shared and then I got to 5-2 in the third but Malcolm showed great spirit and resilience to save match point in that eighth game and i knew then it would be no easy task to get over the line. Malcolm a battler no doubt about it and showed great defensive qualities. Finally snatched it at 5-4 (on 3rd match point i think) but was hard fought. Well played Malcolm and good luck in your final match."  -- Kenneth
  • "Good to meet Kenny, had a fun match. Pretty even all the way through until I started to play some frankly atrocious shots later on. Kenny took full advantage. Well played sir!" - Malcolm

  • "Fun match today against Pete. I played pretty well today, hitting a lot of winners. The first set was over quite quick but the second set was much closer with me just edging it. Pete is a good player and played some really nice shots throughout the match. Was good to meet you and well played!"  -- Nathan
  • "Well played Nathan! You played some great tennis today well deserved win. Good luck with rest of your matches," -- Pete

  • "Good match this morning against malcom. The match was close in the early stages with malcom leading 2-1. I managed to take the first set, however there were a couple of really long games malcom could have won, which would have made the set closer. I started to play much better in the second and eventually won it 6-1. Well played malcom, was really nice to meet you and good luck in your remaining matches. "  -- Nathan
  • "Abiding memory of this match is of short balls and my weak second serves getting spanked past me at eight million miles an hour! Tough match, think I did well to get a few games. Good to meet you Nathan, well done!@ -- Malcolm

Player Comments:

  • "Nice night for a match v Aidan at Victoria park. Busy on the courts with Wimbledon fever still in evidence, but Aiden had bagged us the middle court. I got of to a hopeless start, hardly hit a ball in for the first 6 games. Aidan took pity and handed me a game with three double faults. Managed to hit better from 5-1 on, and it was close all through the 2nd up to 5-5. Aidan was playing good stuff, getting a couple of aces and unreturnable serves, but I managed to take the set 7-5. A quick break in the first game of the 3rd then i hung on through a few deuces to take the second game on serve. Unfortunately at this point Aidan seemed to lose focus and the rest of the match rattled out quite quickly. Good game Aidan, unlucky in the end mate."  -- Malcolm

Player Comments:

  • "Great game of tennis at the spanking new courts at Dudhope Park. Courts are secluded so found it easier to focus without the rabid dogs and general distractions you get elsewhere. So would recommend it to others (just keep an eye out for balls bouncing into the hedge). Got off to a bad start with Aidan springing out the blocks impressively taking the first 3 games. I played well to get back level but always felt I was playing catch-up. Second set was similar and was an interesting tactical game as we both were probably trying to prove for weaknesses. Alas I couldn't find anything for all my efforts. Well played Aidan, you have a good all round game and put away your chances with great confidence. Best of luck with the remaining matches."  -- Kenneth
Reveal CommentDarren Pake bt Malcolm Farnan (Jul 13) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Pleasure to meet and play Malcolm for the first time today. Was a much more competitive match than what the score may suggest. Malcolm had me pinned back to the baseline numerous points meaning my defence had to be a high quality, thankfully for me that's a strong part of my game and I got a lot of balls back in court. Was able to put Malcolm in difficult positions through my cross court forehand and some short balls drawing him into the net and then hitting the lob. Malcolm had break points early in the 2nd set but I managed to hold and I think that was key, a marathon last game before I eventually served it out after multiple deuces. Well played Malcolm."  -- Darren
  • "Good to play against Darren today, was an enjoyable game. Could have been a bit closer but lots of unforced errors from me as usual, and Darren had me running all over with well positioned shots. Thought I might have managed to win a couple more games if I had taken my chances in that long last game, but not to be. Too good for me in the end, well played Darren." Malcolm

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentDarren Pake bt Pete Wishart (Jul 7) 6-3, 6-7 (8-10), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Incredible match. Pete is a very solid player who hardly makes any cheap errors and with my defence being solid today this made for extremely long rallies, there were many points that seemed to last forever and it took it's toll. With tiredness becoming a factor I did everything to try and win in straight sets but momentum swung both ways before eventually Pete took 2nd set tiebreak. My forehand was pretty hopeless today so I found myself hitting countless backhands and with some good net play I managed to get a lot of points, very hard to win points from the back of the court against Pete today. Got break early in the 3rd and managed to hold on rest of the set. Well played Pete."  -- Darren

Player Comments:

  • "Due to the steady drizzle and concerns of slippery courts we moved the match to JP's club down at West End TC. Was a great surface to play on making for a faster and very enjoyable change from the tarmac council courts. Thanks for inviting me there JP. I felt at least I made it competitive in parts but your game was solid today and just too good for me to cause any kind of sustained threat. Thanks again and look forward to the next one," -- Kenneth
  • "The score line in this match is quite flattering towards me and does not reflect how close most of the games were and how hard I had to fight for big points. Despite the drizzle Kenneth’s ground strokes were fast and accurate and tested me in a number of areas. The combination Kenneth’s tennis and the weather pushed me to switch to ‘plan b’ in how I moved the ball and approached each point and I feel that in the end I had the edge on consistency over Kenneth which proved key in the slick conditions. Thanks for the game Kenneth, best of luck for your remaining matches," -- JP

  • "A warm and windy day to play tennis. We both got off to a good start and we're hitting the ball pretty well. The first set lasted a long time with Paul in the lead most of the time. I managed to come back within the tie break. I think winning the tie break deffinetly gave me alot of confidence which helped me hit the ball harder with more accuracy. Paul is a great player. He has beaten me before which now makes it one all. I really enjoyed Paul's company. He's a great guy that gave me a real challenge this evening. I'm very happy to get the win. Goodluck with the rest of your matches. Thanks. "  -- Douglas
  • "First of all, well played Douglas, thoroughly deserved win! I had great opportunities to close out the 1st set (6v5 up then 4v1 up in the tie break) but failed to see it out....that’s the most disappointing thing from my point of view. 2nd set was a different story, kept it tight at 2v2 but Douglas then kicked on playing some solid tennis and he was really sharp at the net. Douglas also played consistently well from the back of the court throughout the entire match and it made for a challenging encounter. Thanks for the game Douglas and best of luck for the remainder of the round," -- Paul

  • "Tough match with Kenny today in extreme heat! The sun made it difficult to see on one side of the court also, despite this there were still many great rallies. My backhand was effective today a couple of winners and also putting Kenny in difficult positions in the court. Kenny made me play an extra shot with some great defence at times, was a close 2nd set, I got the break at 4-3 and then served it out well without the nerves of a deuce game. Good luck rest of the round Kenny."  -- Darren

  • "Beautiful Sunny evening for our match! I had a very enjoyable match with malcolm, i broke early in the set to go 2-0 up then he broke straight back and tied it up at 2-2. I felt more confident as the set wore on and played better to take the set 6-2. Malcolm was hitting well and we had alot of deuce games! Second set malcolm started well going 2-0 up! I managed to get myself back on serve at 2-2 then we both held our serves. We had another good few deuce games which i somehow managed to edge it 6-3 in a very close set. • "Extremely tough match against JP. The first set went back and forward with many breaks of serve before I managed to see it out 6-4. In the second set JP increased his level of play while I started making a lot more errors resulting in a comfortable set for him. I managed to come back stronger in the final set coming from 4-3 down to win 6-4. Thanks for the game JP, you played some really good tennis. Good luck in the rest of your matches!," -- Nathan
Reveal CommentDarren Pake bt Aidan Brogan (Jun 19) 5-7, 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was one of my most hard fought wins in local tennis leagues for sure. Aidan's defence was incredible and this made it extremely difficult for me to finish off points and hit winners. Many points I can remember being in a good position at the net and after a few volley/smash attempts the ball kept coming back and I eventually missed. Lost the first set from 5-3 up which was tough to take but I kept trying to charge the net at every opportunity looking to kill off points. After a long battle eventually won the last 2 sets 6-3. Well played Aidan."  -- Darren

  • "Nice morning for a match at Victoria Park. My first game against Malcolm and he played very well in the first set, striking the ball with pace and confidence. I kept hanging in there, finding a bit of rhythm and finally managing to edge out the key games, mostly from Deuce. I got off to a good start in the 2nd and despite a bit of light rain managed to keep the error count low and see out the match. Overall a good test and looking forward to the next one. Nice to meet you Malcolm and best of luck for your remaining matches."  -- Paul
  • Good game this morning. First 6 or 7 games were pretty even but unfortunately for me Paul didn't hit a ball out after that! Some good rallies that usually ended with me duffing one long. Cheers Paul good luck in the rest of the games.

Group Summary:

Just like Group One, there was a knife-edge finish and just as in the group above, the runner-up squeezed in one more match to bring up a tie on points with the ultimate winner. As Gavin commented, "it's never over till it's over" and his match with Paul was a "never give up" battle that could easily have gone to a third set. Well done to Gavin for a great run of matches and for holding on to win the crown. Commiserations to Paul but he too can be very proud of his round as can third-placed James who comes home with a handy 50/50 win/loss record.

  • "Great to meet Steve tonight. All the score reflects is that Steve hasn't played since the 80s. He even played with an 80s racket. He did, however, have a latest technology racket with him, but wasn't confident enough to use it as he has never used it before. We had a hit after the match and he was hitting the ball much better with the latest technology racket. Could be food for thought for Steve. Thanks for the game Steve and there is no doubt you will improve as you get games under your belt."  -- Paul

There is no doubt he can play as he played some very, very nice shots today, that wouldn't look out of place at a higher level, but he was very inconsistent. On a positive note his serves today were very impressive, first and second! thanks for the game and i hope the rustiness eases off."  -- Paul
