Collapse AllFrome Singles - Round 13 | Thursday 6 June 2019 to Wednesday 31 July 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 3 July 2019)

Only the one group this time, but all but one of the matches was played which is excellent. And judging by the brilliant commentaries (there seemed to be half marathons happening on and off the court) this round was a lot of fun. Thanks for taking part. If you can spread the word about future rounds we would be really grateful. The more players, the better the mix of standards and the more enjoyable it is for everyone (we hope). If you are telling other players, don't forget to mention that players who complete three matches by the mid-point receive a free can of tennis balls, there is a winner's prize to the value of £20 and the league offers lots of other discounts and offers (including the chance to take part in the Local Tennis Leagues section of the annual Wimbledon ballot!).

Group Summary:

Just one solitary match remained unplayed in this terrific round. Of course every match can be important in the points chase and the chances are that if Adam had taken on Jeremy he might have picked up the extra point that would have allowed him to draw clear of Terry at the top of the table. As is is though, Terry picks up his second group win. Although he tied on points with Andy, and although Andy ended the round with one more win, Terry beat Andy in their head-to-head. When it comes to breaking ties at the top of the table, that matters! Terry should be congratulated too for earning points for sets won in two of his losses. In the end these were also vital. Huge commiserations to Andy who picks up the silver. There is a lot to fight for in the next round!

Player Comments:

  • "Another epic hard fought match lasting over two hours on a beautiful summer's evening. Terry played well to quickly take a 3-0 lead and hold on to first set. An epic 2nd set with breaks going back and forth which I managed to hold my nerve and win to force a third. I found myself 4-1 up in the third thinking I was on the home straight until Terry forced himself back to 4-4. Thankfully I broke back and held my serve to take the match. Thanks again Terry for hosting and I am looking forward to the next league."  -- Peter

Player Comments:

  • "Frome half marathon caused us a few problems getting to match! Once we started weather was a bit drizzly but then throughout the match the weather got better and the sun came out. A very close battle with some very long deuce games! Terry's slice was causing me a few problems which has recently been added to his game! Well played Terry and I look forward to our next encounter!"  -- Adam

Reveal CommentTerry Gillman bt Jeremy Naylor (Jul 15) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Jeremy hosted this match at his club, Riverside TC Salisbury. On a hot sunny afternoon, the first set went to Terry although the 6-1 scoreline did not reflect how close it was. There then followed a huge momentum shift with Jeremy keeping a good length and height over the net whilst also making no errors. The ridiculously long points resulted in Jeremy winning the first fifteen points of the second set! That made for a tense and hard fought finish to the match. Well played Jeremy, thank you for your hospitality and I look forward to future matches. Terry"  -- Terry
