This is how it works

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Players are grouped by ability, so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA
  • For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three tie break sets; if a set reaches 6 games all, it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are grouped according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Everyone in the group plays each other once during the round
  • You get one point for each set you win
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of each group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winners get a certificate and a bottle Champaign!
  • Where possible, winners of the groups (and sometimes the top two) are promoted for the next round; those who come bottom (and sometimes the bottom two) are demoted

Reveal CommentAbisola Shoyemi & Patrick Rooke bt Adam Timmis & Stephen Nugent (Nov 10) 6-4, 3-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A really tough match on a cold and damp night in Highbury. Abi and I took a tight first set 6-4, with lots of deuce games. Adam and Stephen really stepped it up in the second, with some very effective hard serves and lovely volleys from both. Not much Abi and I could do! Third set came and after some steely play from both teams, Abi and I were 2-4 down. We moved courts and regrouped for 4-4. After some strong hitting from the guys, Abi and I were 0-40 down, but Abi handled the pressure and we took a 5-4 lead. 30-30 and I managed to sneak a winner up the line, and we closed it out next point for a great win. Player Comments:

  • "An entertaining match in lovely autumn sunshine. The first set was a yo-yo affair, settled by a tight tie-break, with a set point either way before V&J closed it out. They then motored to 4-0 in the second, only for the Porters to rally well to 4-4, V&J recovered to break, before Jens served out for the match. Some excellent points along the way."  -- Jens

Player Comments:

  • Poonam and Ollie great fun to play and competitive opponents as ever. Did Poonam's concentration waver when she realised we had to complete the final four games in ten minutes , or she would be late seeing her son's Hamlet? We will never know, but it would be a very elegant excuse if so. - Richard

Group Summary:

Unfortunately two withdrawals meant this was a relatively quiet group but all credit to Kalsang and Sarah for managing to get in three matches and their bonus points. Congratulations! Well done too to Poonam and Vicky who, through sheer determination, hung on long enough to beat the champs and to runners up Sarah & Geoff who were not the only pair to have their stamina tested by the indefatigable Magnus!

Player Comments:

  • "The first set was a real humdinger - really close right from the start with many deuces and long rallies, mainly because of Marcus's incredible athleticism - he just doesn't give up, even when it may seem an impossible task he gets those balls back! He must have been feeling slightly less energetic fior the second set as Geoof and I managed to win it but we ran out of time so hopefully this match will be continued soon. Player Comments:

  • "Poonam & I lost the last time we playing this cunning pair and it looked like history was going to repeat itself in the first set as Sarah thwacked forehands with gay abandon and Kalsang was hitting everything so well. Poonam does not let me give up though and through sheer determination she willed us on to win the 2nd set. Our unforced error count dropped in the 3rd, which enabled us to stay in & win some long rallies. War of attrition!"  -- Vicky

We were the 4-9 down in the match tie break but cane back to win 11-9. Almost as stressful as watching Andy Murray when we play! Great game with some beautiful base line shors and use of slice from the Clothiers. A lot of sprint were required to try and counter their drop shots. Well played everyone."  -- Brett

  • "A very exciting match. We started in the dreaded court 11 in partial darkness and netball marking making it very hard to focus. Anne and Sophie got off a flyer, whipping us in the first set and taking a 3 game lead in the second. Then the comeback began, helped by a move to court 3 for the second hour! Not many long rallies but some fine serving and clever use of pace and volleys by all players. "  -- Brett

Player Comments:

  • "In the first set, Atanas & Dias came out very strong, winning the majority of the points with great volleys and agressive tennis. In the beginning of the second set, we managed to control better our emotions and we started returning much better as well as serving more consistently. The third set was very close, we broke to lead 3-1 but both teams played good tennis at the same time and we were even at 4 all. That's when they broke our serve twice in a row, to serve for the match at 5-4 first, then at 6-5. We broke back to force a tiebreak which was again very competitive and we won the match on our second match point. Great game!! "  -- Mouche

Reveal CommentMouche Cohen-Lamberger & Salvatore Cardali bt Christopher Hill & Jonas Niessen (Oct 21) 6-2, 3-6, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A roller coaster of emotions where both teams probably played some of their best and worst tennis simultaneously. After a very strong start, Mouche and I were unable to react to Jonas and Chris more aggressive play style, falling down 5-1 in the second set and losing it 6-3 after a mini-reaction rendered void by some hideous net errors. It could've been a very similar story in the third set, with Chris and Jonas leading again 5-2 and having a total of 7 match points; Mouche and I hung in there and eventually manage to equalize to 5-5 with a stunning backhand from Mouche on break-point. The next two games were quite quick, with our opponents probably disheartened by the many missed opportunities. Great match that no one deserved to lose! "  -- Salvatore
