This is how it works:

  • We have doubles and singles rounds!
  • Players/teams are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • The league is mixed sex, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • In doubles teams may be any combination of gender
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also available on the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

"What - a - match! Amazing rallies, neither of us willing to give up an inch, tennis doesn't get much more fun than that. Certainly one of the most enjoyable matches I've played in the league."

"Look forward to the next league, met some really nice people this time round"

Anton Short

"Thanks for organising everything. I really enjoyed playing in the leagues over the last few years."

Highbury Fields - Tom Johnson

"This is my first time playing in the league and I've really enjoyed it.  Everyone I've played has been very friendly, and all the games have been of an appropriate, well matched standard, so thank you very much!  I'll definitely be signing up for the next league."

Highbury Fields - Rebecca Law

"Just to say that I very much appreciate what you have done for the tennis fanatics in London at a very high standard."

"I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for all your great work you're putting into the league. It has been fun joining the league for the last couple of seasons but unfortunately, I won't be able to join any games anymore as I'm leaving London soon. Nevertheless, I've always enjoyed playing tennis at Highbury- in particular the mixed doubles - and will remember this time."

Player Comments:

  • "Really good hit with Jack under the lights at Highbury. I was very fortunate to nick the tie break. Conditions were tricky. We played in 2 degree fog and Highbury Fields seemed like Sleepy Hollow as the mist swept across the court. It will be interesting to see how the Highbury courts weather the winter. The fog left them damp and pretty slippery, but there were also signs of moss over much of the court. Hopefully the excellent ground staff can keep that under control. "  -- Andre

This was a busy group with lots of matches played and five close 3 set scorelines, and it was tight at the top too with Carl and Brett both tied on 8 points from 3 wins apiece. Sadly the two hadn't played their head to head yet so instead the title went to Carl as one of Brett's wins was a walkover. Congrats also to Carl and James for battling through "atrocious English weather" and the added hazard of "kids running onto our court" to complete an exciting 3 set tussle!

Chris took the first 3 games of the final set and his strong technique is tricky to handle. Ultimately, I managed to fight back get across the line finishing the match with a baseline lob. Great to meet Chris and hang around to hit for a while afterwards." -- Brett

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentCarl Petrou bt James Dolan (Dec 18) 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8)

Player Comments:

  • "It was a wet & potentially storm day – and was almost cancelled due to the atrocious English weather Within the first 5 mins, we decided to play Sadly for Carl, this meant being 5-1 down! There was a bit of an Aussie battling back action, though James was just too good The 2nd set issues: kids running onto our court, changing courts & our balls were now becoming very wet & heavy All of this was much for James & he lost Now the 3rd and final set! The new challenges were our balls where now muddy & with the cold creeping into our muscles & bones, it was a set of endurance! It ended in a tie-break that resulted in 10-8! A game and match that had more twist and turns than a Shakespearean drama Amazing play by James - thank you!!"  -- Carl

Reveal CommentBrett Galloway bt Jamie Masraff (Dec 6) 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Lovely to be back playing league tennis - albeit a bit slippy underfoot. A slightly tetchy first set as we literally found our feet! This is reflected in the score. Next sets were more expansive in style and bizarrely we both dominated a set each. Jamie is strong at the net, has a good return of serve, and is a willing runner! Good luck for the next matches."  -- Brett

Oliver plays a clever game with lots of slices which makes it really hard to find a rhythm and place on the court. After a very tight first set that could have gone either way he romped away with the second 6-1. The third set went back to being extremely tight with just one break in it in the end.
