Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • We have doubles and singles rounds!
  • Players/teams are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • The league is mixed sex, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • In doubles teams may be any combination of gender
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a bottle of Champagne which has to be collected from us. A winner's certificate is also available on the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

"Many thanks for organising another great doubles league,"

Fiona Dias

"Thank you very much for organizing the league. It is really great to meet and play with new people locally"

Masashi Nagai

"Not often I praise people/services so please consider this double from someone who works in the big bad city! Didn't realise the full extent and the number of people who enlist in the leagues each round. Amazing numbers and to think you respond in good time to any e-mails that I have sent is hugely impressive. You are either mad or passionate to do this between you but equally I for one am delighted and massively grateful :)  Again many thanks,"

Edward Randall

"Thanks once again for taking the time to organise such a fun event."

"Many thanks fo all your work in organising this. I had a few very interesting games and enjoyed playing in the league.  Once again thanks for all your efforts to make this league happen!"

"I have thoroughly enjoyed the [mixed doubles] tournament, very well done indeed, hope to participate again next year."

In the end, the weather was pretty kind to the doughty Highbury players and we were rewarded with over two-thirds of the available matches getting played. As usual, there were some real crackers and we have greatly enjoyed reading the match commentaries as they came in. For group winners, your bottle of Champagne awaits (just in time for Valentine's Day!) and we hope all of you will be back in action of for more great tennis next round!

Group Summary:

What a top group! Nearly all the matches were played and a handy eight players earned their bonus prizes and points which meant nothing was left to chance. Hats off to Frank who follows up group one wins at our Islington Tennis Centre league with a well deserved top group win in Highbury. Three players, including runner-up Toby, took him the distance in his matches and it was a group that wasn't over till it was over. Well done too to third-placed Andrew, level on points with Toby who had the fractionally better sets and games conceded record and grabs the runner up spot. Fantastic Group One tennis everyone; take a bow.

Group Summary:

No one was able to grab bonus points in this group, but that didn't mean a lot of good tennis wasn't played. Sean was as competitive as always getting one more match in than his opponents to take his points tally to within one of the leader. But when it came to who could make the greatest dent in that leader's tennis this time, it was third-placed Samir who perhaps came closest (what a great match that looked like). In the end though it is Rory and his five excellent wins that we salute! Well done all.

Group Summary:

In some rounds, to be successful, you just have to keep knocking on the door. It's an approach that worked for Duncan who edged ahead of runner-up Brendan despite losing their tight three-setter. Having matched Brendan on wins, and added bonus points, the points won for sets taken off Sarah, Rodney and Brendan gave him a comfortable cushion at the top. Super tennis in an excellent group.

The second set was tougher than the first, with Rod coming back from 1-3 down to lead 4-3. I managed to save a few set points and then found myself serving for the match but proceeded to lose that game to love! 1-5 down in the tie break, I thought I was heading for another unfinished match but somehow I managed to claw my way to take the tie break just before the lights went out. Reveal CommentAlex Hicks bt Anthony Bristow (Nov 30) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Some massive serves and forehands made Antony a tough opponent. All but the last few games went to multiple deuces. Thank you."  -- Alex

Group Summary:

Robert was the bench mark in this group against which all the others had to measure up and in truth there was little anyone could do to hold him to account on court. So all the more credit to Helen who, with the help of her "demon forehand", did as much as anyone to keep their match close. Thanks to four good wins and bonus points, she ended the group just two points behind the leader. Elsewhere it was all about intriguing match ups and nip and tuck sets - well done David for a hard-fought third place.

Group Summary:

A brilliant debut round from Arnold who made this busy group (five players earned their bonus points) his own. Arnold played and won six matches. His toughest challenge came, appropriately enough, from the eventual runner up - Thomas. What a humdinger of a three-setter that was. No commentary was left but we can guess it was "exhausting". Thomas just nicks second place from Brett (on sets and games conceded, the tennis equivalent of goal difference), but no doubt about who will be ascending the groups next time. Well done Arnold.

Player Comments:

  • "Always enjoy playing Josh. He takes a few risks but hits the balls so sweet and with pace, which encourages you to play likewise. He was on fire for the first 10 games and I was facing a double doughnut humiliation. Then, in game 11, I finally found some rhythmn myself and ran down every point. I was initially happy to win just one game, but went on to snatch the second set. Having exerted so much energy in the second, I could not rise again in the 3rd and Josh was cruelly denied a deserved victory by the floodlights going out after 2 hours! I felt pretty bad for him, but he took it like in good spirit. "  -- Brett

Group Summary:

No fewer than three previous group winners crammed themselves into this group (with winter rounds when the total numbers of players falls, groups can be like that). So which of them would win this time? In the end, none of them as it was Beto who battled through without a loss. Marco did well to take a set of Beto while John and Riccardo, runner-up and third-placed respectively, kept themselves in contention, but this was Beto's round. Promotion awaits!

Plenty of other good matches were played in the leaders' wake, but no doubt about our winner this time.

Group Summary:

There was a lot of league experience in this group but who could do the most to capitalise on it? As it turned out, it was Mark who could combine scheduling and tennis skills to pull out in front of the chasing pack. Four nice wins and not a set lost (even if runner-up Mike did his best to change that) plus bonus points allowed him just to keep his nose in front. What might have happened if third-placed Eddie had been able to build further on this undefeated run of three matches? A story for another round!

Then Mark broke early in the 3rd game, and unfortunately Paul's hiatus from match play began to show. As the pressure mounted, Paul's serve began to falter allowing Mark to go on the offensive, and begin to push the ball around. Paul defended valiantly, hitting some precision lobs, but alas it was not to be. Thanks for the game, 10/10 would play again. "  -- Mark
