  • "Another enjoyable match played in humid conditions. We both started off well but as the game went on we were both struggling in the heat. I managed to stay consistent in the first set to hold off a relentless serve and volley technique used effectively by Pippa. The second set was tough going with most games going to deuce and much closer than score suggest…."  -- Avery

  • "Zelma picked the perfect afternoon for some indoor tennis at David Lloyds with it bucketing down outside. Despite the lack of thunder outside, their was no shortage of thunderous serves from Zelma with an impressive display of serving making returning a huge challenge especially with her killer serve out wide. I'd occasionally chip in with the odd ace. Not the biggest fan of carpet surfaces and was certainly put under pressure with continued visits to the net from Zelma leading to me making a number of errors. Good afternoon of tennis with the added bonus of a swim and some time in the sauna, thank you Zelma. "  -- Matthew

  • "After a tough day on Saturday I decided to try it all over again on Sunday afternoon. David and I took some time to settle but fortunately for me my serve was more consistent and I knew what to expect in the 28-29 degrees weather having played the day before. Another enjoyable match played in good spirits in sunny and humid conditions fitted more for a day at the beach….."  -- Avery

Player Comments:

  • "On a sizzling Saturday we were lucky to time the match to have the pleasure of shady courts. With many a block buster in the past it's always an absolute pleasure to play Avery. I'd be the quickest out the blocks racing to a 4v0 lead thanks to some precise backhand winners. Avery would soon arrive to the party though and break with some huge forehands. End of the set would be uncharacteristic of us both with both players being broken to love, certainly not out usual standards today serving wise. Second set would see Avery get off with a flyer and go up 3v0 before the rallies got longer and more and more exhausting. I'd just about find a foothold into the match with plenty of scrabbling around the court which just about got me over the line."  -- Matthew

Player Comments:

  • "A very warm evening for this one. I won the toss and chose to serve having served well in the warm up, but immediately regretted the decision as Zelma broke me and held her own serve to consolidate the break early on. I managed to come back to 4-4, then held and broke to take a tight first set. I started the second set better than the first and, despite some lengthy games with a lot of deuces, took a 5-1 lead. I served for the match, but Zelma wasn't finished. She broke me to love, held serve and broke me again to bring the score to 5-4. Fortunately for me, I was able to break Zelma's serve to take the match in a tightly fought contest. Thanks for the match Zelma. Best of luck in your remaining matches and I look forward to our next one. "  -- David

Player Comments:

  • "Floodlights were already on for our match on a very cloudy, gloomy evening that had threatened rain all day. Second point of the match and we were both hitting well with a long rally of excellent retrievals and moving the ball all over the court. Pip was able to take the early lead having got her eye in with two matches the day before and lead 4-0. Zelma was able to strike back with Pip missing shots at the back and sides of the court, topped off with a double fault. Pip managed to break again before being broken back once more to take the set to 2-5. Pip was able to see the set out and the match despite Zelma's tenacity getting tough shots back. Although one shot that hit the net outrageously would've been unreturnable stood right by it! "  -- Philippa

Player Comments:

  • "Both thankful for some cloud cover on a humid morning. Jack came out of the blocks in great form with great power and precision. Pip's serves were taken to deuce and eventually broken. Having thought the set might be lost to 1, Pip fought back and managed to get a couple back before losing it to 3. Second set much more even but Jack maintaining the upper hand and was serving for the match at 5-4. Pip managed to break and continue that form with some big first serves and stole the set 7-5. Third set started with both players having their serve broken a few times, but Pip's hold was matched by Jack (although only just) to keep it at 3-3. Jack again served for the match at 5-4 and it was the same story as the 2nd (but tired play from both)."  -- Philippa

  • "Another enjoyable match with Jack at Bramford tennis club. The wind affected our game at the sunny end of the court but we settled well in our game and made it a sporting encounter. Jack and I have had close matches in previous encounters both in doubles and singles leagues and know each other game very well. It wasn’t his day this time around but looking forward to seeing him back on court……"  -- Avery

Player Comments:

  • "Lovely evening of tennis at Kesgrave despite the odd spot spit of rain. First set very flattering, with Pippa's first two services games both being very long deuces which could easily led to the set going the other way. Both players were consistent throughout leading to plenty of long epic rallies. Second set was tightly faught with big serves from Pippa and a few huge forehand winners, one of which was shot of the night which allowed her to hold at 3v3. I managed to sneak in a break and hold serve to clinch the second set 6v3"  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentPhilippa Ward bt David Sendall (Aug 23) 6-3, 4-6, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Blue skies, sunshine, and warm muggy courts. David was out for revenge with the unrepresentative scoreline we had in the last round. Sun-free end won the first few games before Pip managed to hold as it started to go down at 4-3 and snuck the next two for the set. David came back with strong, positive play in the 2nd set and was rewarded with a very convincing and early break. A second break to go 4-1 up was too much for Pip to come back on, saving break back points to avoid a 5-5 scenario and take us to a 3rd. More even start with David having the edge from serving first. He broke to serve for the set at 5-3 but Pip wasn't having it. Managed to win the next four to steal the match serving it out in style. Great play, David, thank you"  -- Philippa

  • "On a glorious summers evening David and I had a decent amount of time to soak in the sunshine with the obligatory half an hour wait for a court in August. I would race out the blocks to a 5v0 lead, aided by not missing a first serve til deep into the first set. Would be signs of David warning up with a solid hold forcing me to serve it out. Second set would start the same pattern before a crucial third game got David very much into the match, cliniching the hold with the shot of night with a huge forehand down the line that left the parks brick walls shaking!! From here the match really tightened up with much longer rallies that get longer and longer the deeper onto the set we got.David went on to lead 4v3 before I pulled it back to win"  -- Matthew

I managed to pull back to even up the scores but he had the momentum in the first set to close out. I think the first had drained us both but we managed to play a good level of tennis in the second. We were spent in the tiebreaker but managed to enjoy a great game of tennis played in good spirit……"  -- Avery

  • "Paul started the sharper on a humid morning, breaking Nick to 15. But Nick struck back and four breaks levelled the score at 2-2. Nick then settled the better and with more consistent serves and punishing forehands took the next four games to win the set. Paul was up for the fight and was unlucky not to break Nick on the first game of the second set, just angling a forehand wide. The narrow escape focussed Nick and he played some of his best tennis to dominate an unlucky Paul and take the second set 6-0. The score line was harsh on Paul who forced Nick I to a number of rallies to win the points. Thank you, Paul for a most enjoyable game and good luck in your remaining matches."  -- Nicholas

  • "Nick and Joe had a titanic battle at a sunny Grundisburgh. Both players were evenly matched but Nick struggled to come to terms with Joe’s looping forehands and Joe dominated early on taking the first set 6-3. At 3-2 in the second Joe looked to be heading for a straight sets win but Nick somehow drew on his reserves and experience to reel off 5 games to level the match. With the light soon to fade the match was decided on a Championship tie-break. At 5-3 Nick missed an easy winner and Joe’s confidence grew. He took an 8-6 lead but Nick levelled 8-8. Joe served an unteturnable sliced backhand and another looping forehand to edge the closest of matches 10-8. Great match, thoroughly enjoyable, thank you, Joe and good luck. "  -- Nicholas

The first set was very tight, going with serve, both players serving well, Paul put some great aces down the T, and I hit a few unreturnable serves myself. Both players also getting a handful of break points, but none converted. The tiebreak went my way, getting a 5-0 lead, and eventually closing it out 7-3.
