Collapse AllKennington & Brockwell Parks Singles - Round 46 | Thursday 19 July 2018 to Wednesday 12 September 2018 (Midpoint: Wednesday 15 August 2018)

151 matches were played this round, and many of them epics! Well done all especially as many were played during the heat wave. There were a few players who didn't get going at all which is always a real shame. Please get in touch with us another time if you can't play or if you are struggling to hear back from other players. Getting matches played is very much the name of the game!

Group Summary:

A really high percentage of matches were played in this group, many of them classics, from Simon's "incredible battle of war and attrition against Dave" to the point in the Tom v Giles match which "finished with Giles taking off at the net and executing perfectly a slam dunk smash for an untouchable winner," said Tom. "Massive." Well played all! Tom just edged ahead of Simon to clinch a group win - congratulations. Thanks too for all the great write ups - very much appreciated and enjoyed!

Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Giles Gale (Sep 11) 6-1, 3-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Lots of strong rallies. Had trouble adapting to the serve and volley game on offer which is quite unique in this league but was happy to prevail after another tough one"  -- David
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Edward Hamill (Sep 10) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A 15 minute game, or so it seemed, at 3-3 in the 1st set was likely the decider and set the tone for the rest of the match. I was able to use and abuse of drop shots and lobs to overcome Ed's ability to get everything back in the court. good fun all around"  -- David
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Giles Gale (Sep 10) 6-4 Giles Gale Retired

Player Comments:

  • "It was a shame that illness brought an early end to this match as it was proving an intriguing encounter. Giles raced into a 3-0 lead in the first set, with a host of effective serve-volley points. The subsequent swing in momentum must have been at least in part due to Giles having not played under floodlights in a long time, since the rhythm seemed to go from his game as these came into play. Despite illness also clearly taking its toll on Giles he continued to fight for the set, saving repeated break points with huge serves - but it sadly wasn't a surprise when we had to end the contest early."  -- Timothy
Reveal CommentSimon Wood bt Timothy Jones (Sep 8) 5-7, 6-3, [10-8]

Player Comments:

  • "A truly incredible game against Tim which went to the wire. I conceded a close first set after surrendering 3-1 lead as Tim cleverly reeled me back in. Another 3-1 lead in set 2 eventually led to me taking it 6-3. Following a decision to play a MTB some lengthy rallies followed with one lasting 30 shots as we went head to toe with each other. Tim pinpointing his drives had me scrambling all over the court. Eventually I took it 10-8 and we ended with a warm embrace at the net. A fantastic encounter. "  -- Simon

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt David Jovic (Sep 5) 4-6, 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "It’s always a really close encounter against David, but this has to be our tightest yet. The quality of tennis was strong throughout, especially given we were on the court with only half of the floodlights in action. David played a pretty faultless first set, breaking me in the final game to clinch it. I fought back in the second set, but David once again hit a rich vein of form to take a lead in the third set. Fatigue probably played a part on both sides of the net, and I was certainly relieved to claw my way back into the decider, and eventually get over the line. "  -- Timothy

Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt David Jovic (Sep 4) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "I was fortunate to catch David on the way back from injury and just of the plane from holiday. Despite this, he still managed to hit a number of thumping ground strokes for clean winners. I doubt it will be to long before he is back to his usual level!"  -- Tom
Simon Wood bt Giles Gale (Sep 3) 6-2, 6-1
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Giles Gale (Aug 31) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A tight match with some big swings in momentum not helped by the fading light and Giles suffering with an injury at the end. Despite this there were a number of fun points throughout. One of particular note finished with Giles taking off at the net and executing perfectly a slam dunk smash for an untouchable winner. Massive. "  -- Tom

Dave Loweirnely bt Edward Hamill (Aug 30) 6-3, 6-2
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Edward Hamill (Aug 29) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Really nice to have the chance to play Edward again, and it was a tight match with momentum swinging one way and then the other. Neither of us were as consistent as we’d have liked in the first set, but in the second set Edward stepped up a gear - hitting lots of piercing serves, some cracking lobs and a load of deft volleys. Even with pretty much every net cord going my way (including a crucial one at 5-4 and 30-15 down), it was very close to going to a decider, but I just managed to sneak over the line. "  -- Timothy

Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Tom Harvey (Aug 23) 3-6, 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A topsy-turvy match to play in, and many apologies to Tom for my inconsistent performance, which I’ve no doubt disrupted his rhythm in the second and third sets. Tom played a superb first set and I was lucky to get the three games that I did. Fortunately for me I managed to start hitting better in the next set, and at the same time the wind picked up - which somewhat neutralised Tom’s big serves and groundstrokes that had been causing me so much trouble. The scoreline of the latter sets doesn’t reflect the contest that ensued. Looking forward to playing again soon. "  -- Timothy
Simon Wood bt David Jovic (Aug 18) 6-4, 6-3
Dave Loweirnely bt Tom Harvey (Aug 15) 6-1, 6-3
Reveal CommentSimon Wood bt Dave Loweirnely (Aug 11) 4-6, 7-5, [10-5]

Player Comments:

  • "A truly physical battle which lasted in excess of 2.5 hours on a rare damp summer evening. After a closely fought first set which Dave edged the second set was equally as close. It was nip and tuck all the way and Dave had 4 mps with me serving at 4-5. Somehow I managed to save 2 with winners hitting the lines. Shots have to be that good against Dave to penetrate his incredible defence. I then managed to take the set 7-5. We decided to play a MTB as time was ticking which ended 10-5 in my favour. I truly incredible battle of war and attrition. "  -- Simon

Player Comments:

  • "A number of close games at the beginning of each set could have easily produced a different final result for the match if they had gone the other way. Even so, Ed constructed some fantastic points through out; mixing some acute angles with clinical volleying. Really good fun and I look forward to playing again soon. "  -- Tom

Player Comments:

  • "Summer 2018 - a summer without a Glastonbury Festival. What was the population to do? Where would people go to have fun, wave their obscure flags, drink warm cider and generally get their kicks free or otherwise. Well luckily the brave warriors of the Kennington and Brockwell League 1 have an answer - Get down and watch some tennis in the park! It’s just like the pyramid stage only with more crowd surfing, a greater atmosphere and you can go to the loo whenever you want! Fans turned up in their thousands to watch this one and unlike the Rolling Stones a few years ago they weren’t left disappointed. Giles’ serve volley hit a good rhythm and dropped a thunderous beat that had the crowd screaming for an encore. Well played! "  -- Edward

Group Summary:

No bonus points were won in this group so it all came down to the tennis. Luke and Marcos both won 3 matches each and Marcos beat Luke in what Marcos says was a "very enjoyable game and as the score suggests, there was very little in it." But Luke played two more matches and in one of them picked up a crucial extra point for a set won. That was enough to lob him just ahead of Marcos in the final standings. Very well done to both and very sorry to see Matthew didn't get underway. Do let us know if we can help another time.

Player Comments:

  • "Entertaining game against Nick on a hot Saturday morning in Burgess Park. Nick is carrying a shoulder injury at the moment, hampering his ability to serve well which obviously played a part in this result. I didn't need an injury to hamper my own serve though!! Nick had two set points whilst serving for the first set but I think double faulted twice and let me off the hook, I took that set in the tie-break. The second set I served better and broke Nick a couple of times to see out the game. Look forward to playing Nick again when he is injury-free."  -- Marcos

Luke's game was very solid throughout and in both sets he raced off into the lead. The only difference was I was able to win the big points when I needed to but overall a fun game game with lots of great rallies & winners fro us both."  -- Marcos

Group Summary:

Like group 1, this was a really competitive group where the top 3 players played 6 or 7 games each! Great stuff and really well done. Dejan was the very worthy winner, notching up a magnificent 7 wins out of 7 and without dropping a set. Promotion definitely beckons. Chris who lost only to Dejan (in a match Dejan entertainingly likened to the Wimbledon final) was hot on his heels, losing only to the champ.

Group Summary:

Wow! What a great group. So many matches played and bonus points for almost everyone. The tennis was not at all bad either! There was "the battle of the Poles" (Pete v Krzysztof), the battle of the lefties (Nick v Krzysztof) and for Pete "one of the closest matches I've every played" (v Nick). In five matches Andrew dropped just one set (to Matt) and finishes as the new group champ, followed by Pete (though Pete tied on points with Nick & Matt he won the head to heads so takes second place) and well done to Alex for beating Nick and Matt. Indeed great matches for everyone in a very close group. Congratulations all round.

Heat, rain, a fall & medical time out (glad you are ok Benedict!), a crooked arm, and cramp - this group had it all! And that's without the tennis. There were some marathons here! Almost everyone got their bonus points and well done for getting so many matches played. It's always interesting to see players in a re-match and managing to reverse the outcome, which runner up Mark did in his match against Michael. Jonah lost his first match to Andrew - "a fun match in the brutal heat" - but went on to win the next 6 and the group! Many congratulations to him and to everyone for making this such a great group.

Player Comments:

  • "Beautiful sunny day and a good game overall except for all the distractions that worked against us. Was a very closely contested match, but the pivotal part was when I managed to come back in the first set after being 5:2 down. Probably saved a record number of breakpoints in one match!"  -- Julius

Group Summary:

We always like the sound of shots which apparently break the laws of physics, as happened in Christopher's match against James - well done, especially as "helicopters, ambulances, and the Windrush demo" were all competing for attention! Christopher won the match, one of four where he came out on top, and that, plus a point for a set won in a match lost, means he tops the group! Great stuff. Gary beat the champ and who knows what might have happened had he played a few more matches. Elinor comes second and fittingly had a "titanic battle" against Christopher. Well done for what Christopher says was "an exceptionally enjoyable match".

Player Comments:

  • "After one hour and twenty minutes of a fiercely contested first set in a hellishly blustery wind, leaving the second set in my favour at 4-2 ... the resumption at the Kennington Superdome saw a relatively easy cruise to the winning post for me – despite some long and gruelling rallies – once John's mind wandered after taking a 2-0 lead in the final set."Christopher
Reveal CommentChristopher Burkham bt Elinor Wakefield (Aug 21) 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A titanic battle at the Kennington SuperDome ... the first set was played in damp conditions on court #3, before we had to move to court #5 which was too damned slippy to play on (blame those pesky netball teams for ruining the surface!). The match resumed in brighter conditions, and Elinor showed true grit to take the second set on a tie-break, after numerous deuce-games and service-breaks. As is often the way, her dogged concentration and determination foundered in the third – allowing me the very flattering scoreline in the final set. All in all, an exceptionally enjoyable match!"  -- Christopher

Reveal CommentElinor Wakefield bt Jamie Johnston (Aug 13) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was definitely closer than thescore suggests! Plenty of deuces and Jamie went ahead in the second set before I managed - somehow - to pull it back"  -- Elinor
Reveal CommentChristopher Burkham bt James Taylor (Aug 1) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "On a busy night at the Kennington Superdome – helicopter ambulances, Windrush demo, all the usual lights and sireens – James and I went head to head for the second time in a very tight and exciting match. The first set could have gone either way way, with only a couple of serve breaks; some prolonged rallies; and an astounding (though I say it myself) volley at the night to clinch the set. The second set followed much the same pattern, but fortune favoured me – apart from a couple of shots from James that actually defied the laws of physics ... all in all, an exceptionally enjoyable match."  -- Christopher
Reveal CommentChristopher Burkham bt Jamie Johnston (Jul 28) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Luck was on my side, as Jamie had just come back to the game following a six-month break – laying the foundations for a LTR, if you must know – and he was definitely rusty, and found it difficult to get a rhythm in the first set. The second set produced more extended (and punishing!) rallies and deuce games on a very windy day in the sun at Kennington SuperDome ... "  -- Christopher
