Collapse AllLeamington & Warwick Singles - Round 20 | Thursday 17 September 2020 to Wednesday 4 November 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 14 October 2020)

A shame we had to end the round early because of the new lockdown but not before lots of matches were played! We welcomed a couple of new players to the league and there was plenty of on court action across the 3 groups. Great effort and we look forward to getting going again soon!

Player Comments:

  • "Brilliant match! Luca is a really tough oponent, hence most of the games went up to deuce many times. The court was a little bit wet due to a short rain, however, the superb condition of Victoria Park new courts made the game flawless. I really enjoyed playing against Luca and am looking forward to our next match."  -- Enrique
Reveal CommentNav Aulkh bt Luca Martinengo (Oct 7) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "My first time playing Luca. Enjoyable match, lots of rallies. Luca has a great forehand that is able to find tight cross courts angles. Unfortunately the rain started 10 mins into the match, but we saw it through. Well played Luca, looking forward to playing in dryer condition on out next encounter. "  -- Nav
Reveal CommentEnrique Suarez bt Alex Mott (Sep 28) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Playing at the Warwick Boat Club is magnificent, the view of the castle and the river while playing is stunning. The match was quite interesting, different bounce here than when playing on hard courts makes for speedier balls and shorter rallies. Alex is brilliant, I had to remain beware of his forehand down the line all the time, really looking forward to play against him again."  -- Enrique

Reveal CommentCallum Roberts bt Harpal Singh (Oct 28) 0-6, 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "I don't even know where to begin with this one.......one of the most bizarre matches I've ever played! One minute Harpal was unstoppable and I couldn't get anything over, the next it reverses! The slice shots were laid on thick with both of us pulling out some lovely shots, progressively getting lower and lower until one of us inevitably hit the net, interspersed with the occasional lob shot and some pretty funny net rallies. Overall it was a great match and thoroughly enjoyable. Harpal has some fantastic shots and his serve was not only consistent but had some major kick to it! Thanks for a great game, hope to play again soon "  -- Callum
Reveal CommentTom Courtenay-Evans bt Callum Roberts (Oct 14) 4-6, 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Cracking match with Callum on a cold night under the lights at VP. Callum got off to a flying start to lead 5-1 in the 1st set. His knifed backhand slices were literally unplayable at times barely bouncing at all off the tarmac. I managed to drag out the set and find a bit of form which I took into the second. The third was just as tight as the first two with virtually every game going to several deuces it seemed. Great fun and I look forward to playing again."  -- Tom

Player Comments:

  • "Nice to get the full match in before the rain came - although the wind was certainly whistling across the court at some points. Andy is just returning to tennis after a long layoff - but we had an enjoyable morning with plenty of close games - my (inevitable) errors making up for Andy's occasional rustiness. Good luck with your recovery and the rest of your matches, Andy."  -- Martin

Reveal CommentMartin Gray bt Angelika Durrant (Sep 25) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A very enjoyable afternoon playing tennis on a lovely sunny but rather windy day. I think the wind helped me more than Angelika so the score was pretty kind to me. Thanks, Angelika, for the game - good luck for the rest of your matches!"  -- Martin

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentRod Bond bt Martin Gray (Sep 22) 6-2, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "The first set consisted of more deuces than in a bottle of Robinson’s and those on Martin’s serve proved decisive. Martin was rampant at the start of the 2nd set running away with the set at one point to a 5-2 lead. I managed to fight back to 5-5 before being broken again however I broke back to take it to a tie break. In the fading light we agreed to carry on. My serve was becoming difficult to return and I managed to get 3 match points. Martin played some great drop shots throughout the match but eventually succumb to the final one he tried on the 3rd match point. Great match finished in near twilight!"  -- Rod
Angelika Durrant bt Krishan Bhardwaj (Sep 20) Walkover
