Revision information
Provide an explanation of the changes you are making. This will help other authors understand your motivations.

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Getting started

New players will need to complete the player questionnaire before they can join a round. Once you’ve signed up, and for returning players you can join any of the upcoming rounds above.

For everything you need to know before you get started see the FAQs and review the Rules and Regulations, which all players agree to adhere to when playing in the leagues.

If there is anything else you need help with get in contact with Nigel, Sally and the team who will be happy to help!

Great fun, thoroughly enjoyed each match. You did a good job in placing us with competitors of similar ability,"

Nick Mayes

"I have played a wide variety of sporting events and Local Tennis Leagues continues to be one of the best run competitions I have played in. Enjoyed the company of everyone I played and the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre is more than worth the journey to get there,"

Bruce Stallard

"I'm about to finish my second round and would like to say thank you to the organisers. I think they do a terrific job, everything goes so smoothly like arranging games, submitting scores etc. Participating in the league gave me a taste of competitive tennis and I think I learned a lot of tennis etiquette and thanks to some great opponents learned to enjoy the game even if you are winning or losing!"

Daniel Ion

"This was my first competitive tennis competition (I normally only play on holiday in a social spirit) and thoroughly enjoyed playing and meeting different players at different venues. I really liked playing at the Lee Valley Courts (we had to play indoors during one match because of heavy wind/rain showers). It would be really good to get a discount on the court hire when we are playing the Lee Valley league matches...  All in all though, a great experience and hopefully if I'm fit next February I plan to play in the next round. Many thanks for the admin and arrangements for these leagues... it is appreciated,"

Cliff Warren

"Another occasion to congratulate Nigel and Sally on organizing so brilliantly this friendly tennis competition,"

Phil Zana

"I thoroughly enjoyed your  organization, the venues, my opponents and the matches. I will definitely  play in the future. For now the seniors tour starts and it would be too  difficult to combine both. However, I will be back later this year. Thanks  for your work providing a great tournament,"

Bruce Stallard

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable match against Allan today, in tough (windy) conditions and played in great spirit. I led 5:2 in both sets, but Allan is a fighter and kept coming back. I had to make two winners on both set point and match point to get over the line. Thanks Allan, looking forward to playing next time! "  -- David
Ivan Georgiev bt Bertie Stephens (May 20) 6-2, 6-3
Reveal CommentZafar Iqbal bt Avvon Chambers (May 16) 6-3, 7-6 (7-3)

Player Comments:

  • "A match of two contrasting sets against Avvon. I took the first set quite comfortably keeping it consistent. 2nd set the rain came down and although Avvon had a couple of nasty falls his game improved hitting the ball with more depth and variety. The crunch came as Avvon had 2 set points at 6-5 up, but couldn't convert as I hung in there. No such drama in the tie-break as I took it 7-3. A great effort by Avvon who showed real grit after those nasty falls. Thanks Avvon."  -- Zafar

Reveal CommentReg Coker bt Nick Mayes (May 20) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Nick and I started tentatively, with both of us losing our serves in our opening games. We exchanged a few more breaks of serve until 4-4. I was able to steady my nerves to break again and hold for 6-4. Blue skies suddenly turned nasty and the heavens opened sending everyone scrambling for shelter. On our return, conditions had inevitably changed but we persevered in the wet conditions. The second set was not as close (6-1) but I think we both enjoyed the match, which included one or two nice rallies and some daring net play from both of us. Having got the wind under control Trevor quickly asserted his dominance in the second to lead 5-2 and head the match towards a deciding set. But I managed to keep it simple and play point by point and carried on through to win the next 6 games and match. Great to play Trevor again after our match last year where he had victory. Player Comments:

  • "A very tough start to the league as Anton chased down every single shot with Nadal like running power! I managed to edge out ahead by winning the first set but that didn't get Anton down as he played aggressively to bring it back 1-1. Going into the decider set it was clear we were both running low on energy having battled through multiple long rallies and heading past the 2 hour mark. With Anton 4-2 up i was staring into the barrel of defeat, but i managed to dig deep and get the all needed first victory! An absolute pleasure to play Anton and hope we play again soon!"  -- Kallah
