This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

"I'm about to finish my second round and would like to say thank you to the organisers. I think they do a terrific job, everything goes so smoothly like arranging games, submitting scores etc. Participating in the league gave me a taste of competitive tennis and I think I learned a lot of tennis etiquette and thanks to some great opponents learned to enjoy the game even if you are winning or losing!"

Daniel Ion

"I really enjoyed this round and being able to play several games with other people. Also for the first time, I managed to win a few games. We shared lots of laughs and experiences together. I will def play more :) It just motivates me improve,"

Yading Song

Great fun, thoroughly enjoyed each match. You did a good job in placing us with competitors of similar ability,"

Nick Mayes

"I have played a wide variety of sporting events and Local Tennis Leagues continues to be one of the best run competitions I have played in. Enjoyed the company of everyone I played and the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre is more than worth the journey to get there,"

Bruce Stallard

"Fantastic, a lot of fun. At the beginning I was a bit worried about maybe being in the wrong group, but the matches got much harder by the end and I earned a lot of match experience. Thought the communication between you guys and the players was top notch as well. Definitely signing up to the next round and looking really forward to the new challenges of a tougher group!"

Stephen Jones

"I thoroughly enjoyed your  organization, the venues, my opponents and the matches. I will definitely  play in the future. For now the seniors tour starts and it would be too  difficult to combine both. However, I will be back later this year. Thanks  for your work providing a great tournament,"

Bruce Stallard

Collapse AllLee Valley Singles - Round 25 | Thursday 30 July 2020 to Wednesday 23 September 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 26 August 2020)

It was great to see friendly, competitive tennis make a return in Lee Valley and to have 2 more groups this time, thanks in part by welcoming 9 new players to the league. Well done for completing a number of matches in the heatwave... not to mention keeping your concentration against the (noisy) backdrop of a neighbouring fun fair! Collectively you completed nearly two thirds of all matches and the figure was much higher in some groups which is a great effort... so here's to the next round!

Group Summary:

Several matches were left un-played in this group but there were some great tussles to make up for it, not least Ben's epic 3 set comeback win against group champ Ivan. Ivan's only other defeat was to David, another match where he took the opening set, while his 3 set win over Phil secured him the group title as the pair were otherwise tied on 12 points apiece. David enjoyed a "fun match against a fellow lefty" against Reg while Alan and Ruben took advantage of a "decent dry court" to play attacking tennis.

Final Rankings:

  1. Ivan Georgiev 7.1 [W4, L2] 12 includes 2 bonus points WINNER
  2. Phil Zana 6.2 [W4, L1, UF1] 12 includes 2 bonus points RUNNER UP
  3. David Jahoda 6.2 [W2, UF1] 5
  4. Ben Ewing [W2, L1] 5
  5. Reg Coker 8.1 [W1, L4, UF1] 4
  6. Alan Lam [W1, L3] 2
  7. Ruben Vázquez [L3, UF1] 2 includes 2 bonus points

Group Summary:

Devanshu marked his debut in Lee Valley Tennis League with a fine run of 5 wins to finish the group 4 points clear of runner up Nik. Their head to head was a "marathon of a match" where "every point was hard fought" but Devanshu found his backhand to have the edge on the day. Full marks to Nik for pulling off an impressive 3 set win against Winston though, a "3 hour marathon slug fest on the hottest day of the year"... we're exhausted just reading the commentary!

Reveal CommentNik Wottge bt Samie Dorgham (Aug 23) 7-6 (7-5), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Samie’s first serve goes at about Mach 3 and delivers aces like nobody’s business. For the whole first set I was out at sea against his serve. Even when it went right down the middle and I thought I had my racket on it, it missed the racket to the right - a consequence of the devastating slice. It’s unusual to see so much speed and slice at the same time. The first set went down to a very close tie-breaker. There were a handful of long points, but this was really a battle of the serves. Nevertheless the escapade burned 1,700 calories. The second set was equally tough although I could finally start returning some serves and targeting the ad side of the court. It was a great game and I look forward to being Samie’s punching bag again soon.."  -- Nik
Reveal CommentDevanshu Jain bt Winston Balfourth (Aug 20) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Nice match under not so ideal conditions with wet surfaces and leaves on courts - we both held back on our shots with fear of slipping. Nevertheless good match against a good opponent "  -- Devanshu
Reveal CommentDevanshu Jain bt Nik Wottge (Aug 19) 4-6, 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "What a marathon of a match which lasted over 2 hours - had to be finished in two attempts. Nik is by far the best player I have encountered so far. Incredible consistency, amazing serves, every point was hard fought. I got lucky as managed to find my backhand on the day. Would definitely be playing with Nik very often "  -- Devanshu
Reveal CommentWinston Balfourth bt Joe Holden (Aug 18) 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Firstly, Joe's a great person. One of the most affable people you will meet. A great evening playing tennis in fine company. I feel a bit fortunate having played Joe who hasn't played in over 5 weeks. In the first set Joe struggled to get his rhythm going. In the second set which was a lot tighter and less inhibited Joe hit some great passing shots and we had some amazing rallies. Joe has the game and I am sure that a few more matches will bring it all back. Definitely someone I would play again, inside or outside the league."  -- Winston

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentNik Wottge bt Winston Balfourth (Aug 7) 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A 3 hour marathon slug fest on the hottest day of the year. The first set started even with both sides holding serve with hard fought points and long rallies. Winston hit so many forehand rippers down both wings I lost count. Every time I came to the net he passed with these rippers. I was lucky to pull ahead with a fortuitous break and big serving - but it was close all the way. The second set was characterised by long hard-fought points - usually ending with one of Winston's forehand ripper winners. In the second half of the set he could do no wrong and he took the set in a close tie-break. A few errors crept in during the third set and some of those rippers found the net, allowing me to close it out - but it could have gone either way"  -- Nik

Player Comments:

  • "Great game so far, countless deuces, to be continued "  -- Devanshu

Group Summary:

This was a fairly quiet group with only Jesus and Lionel earning scheduling bonus points and one player not getting out the starting blocks... so 4 was the average number of matches played. However, this didn't stop Jesus opening up a 4 point lead to take the group title on his Lee Valley debut, and he and Rhys put on a fine display of "exceptional tennis" in their head to head before they were beaten for time and play had to finish at 5-3 in the third... what a shame!

This honour fell to Rajendra thanks to fewer unforced errors in the second set of their head to head played in hot and humid conditions. We played really to avoid the heat and after the early morning fug lifted there were some good rallies with Pawel producing several killer passing shots down the line. I was lucky with a few points going my way at deuce and also took advantage of Pawel's service game taking a dip in the second set. I suspect the scoreline might be different next time!"  -- Guy

Group Summary:

The race for Group 6 went down to the wire with Alex and Harry both earning 14 points from 6 wins apiece so who would claim the title? This fell to Alex by virtue of winning their head to head (and not dropping a set all campaign) although Harry played one extra match. Well done to Harry and Hassan for toughing out "torrential rainfall for the first 30 minutes" and going on to play some quality tennis in a close 2 setter, and to Cameron for coming from a set down to defeat James in a mixed bag of "classic British summer weather"!

  • "What a match. The weather was nice, rather warm and sunny. Good for playing conditions, although the sun made serving tricky at times. I took control of the first set with some pacy serve returns. The second set however was a different story. Eric raised his level and hit some good returns of his own. He had the opportunity to serve for the 2nd set twice, but I just managed to break on both occasions. Even the tiebreak was very close. The set could have gone either way, and a 3rd set would probably have been as close as the 2nd. It was a rather enjoyable and at times attritional match. I wish Eric the best in his future matches.
