Group Summary:

It can be tough moving up groups and the challenge for group-three winner Owain was how he would do in the top group this time. It was a brilliant performance and the story really isn't told by his W1, L6 final tally - just look at how close the matches were, including his great tussle with on-form Max. So while it is hats off to Max for his great unbeaten run and group win, let's not overlook the excellent play of all the others in the chasing pack, including of course, runner-up Adam!

Player Comments:

  • "Tennis is supposed to be enjoyable but not when it is freezing cold and your opponent is darting around the court like a Duracell bunny returning all your best efforts. Tim played unbelievably well today, consistent and chased after every ball, he did slow down in the third set as the long rallies finally took their toll, then some random 'Samaritan' offered him free donuts in the middle of my service game?! Tim took two and chomped one during the change over, recharged he was running non-stop again for the remaining of the match. What an epic 2.5 hours tussle, well played Tim! "  -- Lin

Reveal CommentGary Phillpott bt Simon May (Jan 9) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "I’ve yet to play anyone in the Local Tennis league who wasn’t a top bloke, and Simon is the top of the tops: good player; athletic; fierce forehand; and a good sport to boot. An all round good guy. (Quick correction: there was one player I met about two years ago who was in a league of his own at the foot of the top blokes list. Thankfully, he no longer plays in the Local Tennis League). Simon was on his way back from an injury that had kept him off court for about 6 weeks. It was a good time to play him and it must be said that I was flattered by the score. Simon was very unlucky. Unfortunately, for the rest of the players, I am pretty sure I’ve played Simon into form. Thanks Simon for a great match. Good luck in your remaining matches."  -- Gary
Reveal CommentAaron Darby bt Phil Russell (Dec 22) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Nice evening for a tennis match tonight it’s a shame that the adjacent courts were being used as a skate park which could’ve played a factor in the result. Phil struggles to hold serve all afternoon his 3 games that he did win were my service games and he slipped towards the end of the first set which could’ve helped me with a convincing win well played mate"  -- Aaron
Reveal CommentPhil Russell bt Kunal Badami (Dec 21) 6-2, 7-6 (7-3)

Player Comments:

  • "A friendly and enjoyable match played on Victoria Park. I got off to a fast start but Kunal fought back to make the second set a very close one. Good luck in your future matches Kunal. Cheers."  -- Phil
Reveal CommentGary Phillpott bt Kunal Badami (Dec 14) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "If ever there was a lucky way to beat Kunal, this was it. The secret of victory - arrange for the match to be played 3 days after he’s returned from the Dominican Republic, thereby ensuring maximum effect of two weeks hedonistic pleasure (my words, not his) and he’s still suffering jet lag. Not content with this, arrange to play on a surface Kunal has never even stood on let alone played tennis on, and throw in a breeze with obliging gusts timed to coincide with his ball toss on important points. Kunal accepted all these handicaps with a stoic shrug and battled without complaint. I may’ve had all the luck but please don’t feel sorry for him. He’s the one who has just had two weeks holiday in the Caribbean. "  -- Gary

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentGary Phillpott bt Phil Russell (Dec 7) 6-3, 3-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Here’s 10 things you may not know about Phil Russell. 1. He’s quick around the court; 2.He plays with great sportsmanship; 3. He makes his opponent play an extra ball (and another one) (and another); 4. He chases down lost causes and invariably gets the ball back into play; 5. He doesn’t give up or give in; 6. He plays each point on its merits 7. He defends with a ‘though shalt not pass’ attitude; 8. He meets triumph and disaster and treats those two imposters just the same even when he was very unlucky not to win (as today); 9. He likes a post match pint of cider; 10. He’s a pleasure to share a tennis court with. Thanks for the match, Phil. You played well and were very unlucky today. "  -- Gary
Reveal CommentGary Phillpott bt Aaron Darby (Nov 27) 3-6, 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Light rain abated minutes before our start and Leicestershire Club provided perfect tennis conditions: windless, overcast and relatively balmy. Aaron opened and a flurry of hurricane force forehands snapped from his racket, bursting to all court’s corners, accumulating points to freeze me out of the first set (6-3). The calm became an updraft. Waves of gusty rallies scattered tornado propelled balls. The air heavy, the prevailing wind had changed and the pressure resulted in a high - 1-1. The twilight arrived with a snap in the serve and a vortex of volleys. Aaron played the better tennis: aggressive, skilful, athletic and was unlucky to end in ‘vane’. PS It poured 10 mins after the end PPS. Aaron’s a top bloke and a pleasure to play"  -- Gary
