  • "A very tight first set in which we both struggled to create much rhythm, with the setting sun directly in our eye line. The second set was generally better quality, as the sounds of Bruce Springsteen drifted over from Murrayfield. Pawel hit some great winners, but I managed to stay solid and serve well when facing break points. "  -- Callum

  • "Another epic with Matt.. I ran away with the first set though there were many many deuces. Matt came roaring back and took the second set. He then stormed to an 8-4 lead in the tie break, only for me to come back to win 10-8. Played in lovely sunny weather with plenty of great points. Thanks Matt, until next time "  -- Oluwatosin

Player Comments:

  • "Fun match with some crazy rallies! I've not started the match very well and fell back 0:2 right away. Had to get back into it after a break and with new strings. Luckily, managed to raise my level and get ahead to take the first set 6:3. At the start of the second we both struggled on serve. I had an opportunity to serve for the match at 5:3 - couldn't do it! Had 5 match points when Liam was serving at 5:4 - couldn't convert them! At 6:5 I was able to play a strong return game and finally covert the match point. Thanks for a great match Liam! "  -- Pawel

Reveal CommentPawel Milto bt Matthew Strachan (May 1) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Just one of those strange matches where I couldn't miss and not much went Matt's way. I was more solid than usual, making few errors and making some good plays, while Matt was uncharacteristically less consistent and must have hit 25 tape shots. I'm sure the normal service of tight matches will resume next time! "  -- Pawel

  • "Thanks for the game! "  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentPawel Milto bt Oluwatosin Ige (Apr 28) 6-4, 3-6, [10-8]

Player Comments:

  • "Another tight and demanding battle with Tosin! In each of the sets I was able to make a good start and go 3:0 up. Tosin was able level it out to 4:4. I was able to bring the level back up to break and win the set and then go 3:0 in the 2nd. Then Tosin stepped up, I struggled with my serve and just couldn't convert important points. Tosin effectively dished out a bagel by taking the set 6:3. The match tie break was tight all the way through. I was able to get a mini-break ahead just in time to squeak over the line. Absolutely dead from all this running! Thanks for the match Tosin and till next time! "  -- Pawel

Reveal CommentPawel Milto bt Pawel Smrek (Apr 19) 7-6 (7-2), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Very tricky match spread over two days. The first set was very tight and I was helped by Pawel not being quite in tune with his new racket set up. I wasn't quite able to serve it out at 5:4, but luckily managed to play some solid tennis in the tie break. At the start of the second set Pawel got out of the gate very well and I began to struggle a bit with shoulder pain. Pawel was kind enough to allow me an extended medical timeout. We've resumed 3 days later for an evening session. Mostly due to Pawel not having his normal racket I was able to pull back from 0:2 and take the second set. Many thanks and looking forward to playing again when you have your custom new racket! "  -- Pawel
Reveal CommentCallum Macdonald bt Pawel Smrek (Apr 17) 6-3, 7-5

Reveal CommentPawel Smrek bt Lee Simmonds (Apr 15) 4-6, 7-5, [5-1] Lee Simmonds Retired

Player Comments:

  • "Sadly, the match was spoiled by several interruptions in play from people encroaching. The worst of which happened when I was serving for the match at 5-3 and having already missed a match point, I hit what I thought was a winner down the line only for Pawel to tell me he had stopped playing. Unfortunately for me, I never recovered my composure after this." -- Lee

Reveal CommentCallum Macdonald bt Oluwatosin Ige (Apr 15) 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "Brutal match against Tosin, who has an incredible knack of landing his shots consistently close to the baseline. At times it felt the only way I could win points was coming to the net for smashes. The match hinged on just a few points and I got lucky with a net cord in the second set tiebreak."  -- Callum
Reveal CommentCallum Macdonald bt David Hay (Apr 12) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable game. There was a lot of running and a few great rallies and shots played. Leo really pushed me all the way, and got me far too many times with the great drop shot he has in his arsenal. Started off with me racing ahead, then Leo had warmed up and figured out my game a bit, and fought back to take the first set fairly comfortably. I rallied back in the second set to take it, and we went to a tie-breaker due to time (not sure our legs were willing a full 3rd set). I managed to get ahead late in the tie-breaker and claim the victory. But it was a highly competitive match and a great game of tennis! "  -- Nicholas

My groundstrokes picked up making for some lengthy rallies and a lot of movement for both of us. After I won the second set we agreed to go to a third. Player Comments:

  • "This was a highly competitive match which was much closer than the scoreline might suggest. Barbora, making her debut on the artificial grass at Dean, took a little time to become accustomed to the higher speed and lower bounce the surface brings. Mark secured the first set with a mix of heavy grounds strokes and a number of disguised drop shots off both wings. The second set produced closer games, most of which went to multiple deuces. Barbora's increased confidence brought about longer rallies due to deep topspin groundstrokes consistently peppering the baseline. This was an enjoyable contest for both players and played in a competitive, respectful, and friendly manner."  -- Mark
