Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Collapse AllMeadows, Edinburgh Singles - Round 45 | Thursday 12 April 2018 to Wednesday 6 June 2018 (Midpoint: Wednesday 9 May 2018)

Some quality tennis was played this round with a superb effort put in by players to arrange matches and earn bonus points. It's great to see the groups welcoming new and returning players so well and that everyone has been making the most of the sun where they can! A highlight from this round comes from Chris who described his match against another Chris as "without a doubt the most enjoyable match I've played with the Meadows League so far". Here's to many more, and they don't have to include a Chris!

Group Summary:

First place was a close affair between Kevin and Adam E who finished with just the one point separating them but Kevin clinched the head to head win in close three-setter and despite playing fewer matches, edged ahead and ended up unbeaten in the round. This was his returning round to the league so a great comeback. Well done to Adam E who came in a very close second after playing 6 matches, more than any other in the group. This round we welcomed back Milo who enjoyed a "hard fought match in perfect weather" with Daniel and also welcome back Patrick who took a set off Adam E in their match and had a "neck and neck" tie break. A warm welcome to Daniel who had a great game with Patrick which he partly lost due to Patrick's "better night vision"! We hope the lighter evenings will help everyone with organising matches for the coming round.

Group Summary:

A huge well done to Guillaume who was the only undefeated player of the group after winning all 6 of the matches that he played! He enjoyed some close matches and made the most of the weather with a "tropical 17 degrees on the court" in his match against Callum. Harry came in second with an 80% win rate after a tight match against Guillaume. The top four players in the group this round earned themselves their bonus points so well done for that extra effort put in to organise matches early! A warm welcome to Ashley in her debut round whose "technically impressive game will become a danger for mankind" according to Guillaume! Welcome back to Piotr, Garry and Andrea who all returned after a break in the leagues, we hope you enjoyed your round and will come back for many more!

Player Comments:

  • "This was a really enjoyable and topsy-turvy match. After my strong opening set, Andrea fought back well to dominate the second. Group Summary:

Doug took top spot in the group with 5 wins from his 6 matches as well as earning his bonus points along the way - congratulations! Owen was returning to the league this round and took second place whilst being the only player to be undefeated. A special mention to Frank who was the only other person than our champ to earn his bonus points for superb scheduling skills in his comeback round to the league. Welcome back also to Matthew who came in third place and "made it extremely difficult" for Doug during their match where he was "covering the court brilliantly despite the slippy conditions". Welcome to Michelle who "battled out a very competitive match" against Frank and is also a very welcome addition to the group!

Reveal CommentFrank Broderick bt Michelle Moreau (May 6) 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "On yet another hot sunny Edinburgh day (yes 2 days in a row), Michelle and I battled out a very competitive match. Michelle admitted herself the 6-1 scoreline in the first set was her own fault, due to her alcohol consumption the night before. However as the alcohol slowly drifted from her body, she showed her true tennis abilities in the 2nd set with some great shots to put me in my place. Michelle went 5-1 up in the second set, so at this stage, I had a wee word with myself and managed to pull it back to 5-5, before I won the final 2 games to make it 7-5. All in all I thoroughly enjoyed this match. Thanks Michelle. "  -- Frank
Reveal CommentDoug Brown bt Frank Broderick (May 5) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "It's been about 3 years since I last played Frank and good to know I have improved since then. I lost my first service game in both sets due to some good, aggressive play from Frank and a bit of tentative play from me. Two aces in a row from Frank in the 4th game made it seem like it might not go my way! But after that I settled down. We had some lovely, long rallies in the sun, with honours even on those I think. I was pleased to hit the corners a few times and put away a few volleys so overall a good match for me despite Frank's resistance and the multiple deuces!"  -- Doug

Player Comments:

  • "A definite tale of two ... well not exactly halves! We started on Saturday morning optimistically expecting the showers to pass. They didn't! With Matt hitting everything back and covering the court brilliantly despite the slippy conditions I suggested he try to serve it out at 5-3, despite it tipping it down. He didn't and we called it a day. Typically Scottish tennis! We came back tonight. Blazing sun, cloudless sky, no breeze. Ridiculous! Matt was suffering from two days inside sitting, listening to lectures. His energy was a bit low and he was probably a bit de-hydrated. He still made it extremely difficult for me! Tricky match, lots of long rallies, and a lesson in staying patient. Excellent fun. Thanks!"  -- Doug
Reveal CommentDoug Brown bt Michelle Moreau (Apr 21) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Glorious and hot day for the first match of the league and what a great match to start with. We had many lung-busting base-line rallies and lovely points. If we'd had to do more of those I'm not sure I would have lasted so I was particularly pleased when I pulled off some lovely serve volley combos. Very enjoyable and competitive match, thanks!"  -- Doug
Matthew Strachan bt David Wood (Apr 21) 6-4, 6-0

Group Summary:

Lee leapt into first place with an unbeatable score of 7 wins out of 7 matches played and was also the only undefeated player in the group. Second place was a close contest between Alan and David who finished on the same number of points. So we look to their head to head to determine who is awarded second place. They enjoyed a good game with "lots of great rallies" but in the end it was Alan who won their match and therefore the second place spot - congratulations! A special mention to David, Steve and Sivaraj who all earned their bonus points for their strong organising skills. There were some really lovely match comments left this round; it's clearly a great group to be in!

Reveal CommentMatt MacDonald bt Steve Lynch (Jun 4) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was the final showdown match for both Steve an myself. Steve had been laid low with some man-flu last week but he seemed to have recovered rather well. Now that I think about it and how he played....was that just a ruse? Anyway, a close fought match with plenty of long but varied rallies, and not too many unforced errors on either side. Steve started off well by taking the first two games in the first set but somehow I managed to wrestle it back to 3-all and then dug in for the rest of the set. Only a tad easier in the second set and I only just managed to get to the victory line as my usual second set mental and physical crisis was coming on. Good game. "  -- Matt
Reveal CommentMatt MacDonald bt Jonathan Ritchie (Jun 3) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Jonathan not in his best form for this match and the score reflected it. On other occasions I have collapsed under a heap of un-forced and forced errors when he has run down every ball so I still didn't relax till I was 4-0 up in the second! I had my usual mid-second set mental and physical crisis and Jonathan nearly got a game on the board, but his error count was too much today."  -- Matt
Reveal CommentLee Simmonds bt Alan McConnach (May 31) 5-7, 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was effectively a group decider and both of us were unbeaten so I was expecting a tough match. Alan started the better and I was playing catch up after an early break. Having reached parity at 5-5 it was frustrating to then lose the set. Second set was a reversal with me getting the early break and I managed to secure a double break later in the set to take the match to a decider. Standard of play was high in the first 2 sets, generally it was me dictating play and Alan retrieving everything, including some that he had no right to get to! Final set was hard work, after nearly 2 hours of play and almost every game going to deuce we didn't have much left. Somehow I managed to crawl over the line but it could have gone either way. "  -- Lee

Reveal CommentSteve Lynch bt Jonathan Ritchie (May 21) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Seemed like a quick game compared to other matches I’ve played. Jonathan, by his own admission, didn't play well. Combined with an uncharacteristicly energetic performance by myself with a variety of big base line shots, good net play and (for me) some good court coverage. Anyone who knows me as a player would have suspected that some illegal performance enhancer was involved!..... I assure you it’s probably just coffee and the spell of good weather that’s put a spring in my step. Thanks for the game J - good luck with your remaining matches. "  -- Steve
Reveal CommentLee Simmonds bt David Wilmot (May 21) 6-2, 5-7, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Good match with David, first 2 sets in particular was largely decided by serving. Mine went off a bit in the second set and David played a great set to take it to a decider. Luckily for me I got off to a good start with an early break as I think David's intensity dropped a bit and followed up with another break soon after. Tough match and happy to get the win. "  -- Lee

Player Comments:

  • "Good match with Matt on another warm meadows evening. Matt started the better with barely any errors and I found myself down a couple of breaks without playing particularly bad. I somehow managed to turn it around with a mix of better play and a few errors from Matt. Second set I got off to a good start and Matt by his own admission was feeling a lack of match fitness although he still made me work hard to close out the win. Cheers for the game Matt and hope to play again! "  -- Lee

First set not quite as comfortable as the score would suggest - 2nd set anything but comfortable with Siv refusing to make life easy for me with some very clean forehand winners. Much relief all round that the match didn’t go to a third set. Thanks for a great game Siv."  -- Steve

Both struggled for consistency but there were some great winners on both sides too. Look forward to playing you again Jonathan. "  -- Lee
Reveal CommentMatt MacDonald bt Sivaraj Saxena (May 6) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "I started well getting the first 3 games and then Siv's forehand kicked in and he brought it back for me just to keep my nose ahead at 4-3. He made me work for my last two games and I was pretty knackered at the end of the first set (first competitive singles match of the season is always a cardiac arrest job for me). However, for the second set I adjusted a couple of things with my game and my unforced error count went down and Siv's went up. Lovely sunny evening to be on court in the Meadows. "  -- Matt

Group Summary:

First place goes to Philippe in his debut round - the only player to be undefeated in the group, winning 6 of the 6 matches that he played! Second place was a very close battle between Ludovic, returning to the league after a break and Chris R who both finished on the same number of points; after looking to their head to head, a close and exhausting three setter in which Chris R clinched the win, we have our answer! There were lots of three set matches played this round, and it's great to see that huge effort put in to get the matches completed! We also welcome Dominic in his debut round who played a "very enjoyable game with plenty of deuces and rallies" against our champ - we hope you enjoyed your first round!

Group Summary:

Rokas stormed the group, playing every possible match and winning every single one! He was the only undefeated player in the group too so well done on a fantastic comeback round to the league after a break. Keith and Alex were one point apart but it was Alex who edged into second place after playing 6 matches and winning 5 in his debut round. This group made a brilliant effort to earn their bonus points so a huge well done for your superior scheduling and for making that extra effort to meet other players. This round we welcome Andy who had a "great game with some really long rallies and a few epic shots" with Lindsay. Welcome back also to Linda and Daniel, we hope you enjoyed your comeback round!
