Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • We have doubles and singles rounds!
  • Players/teams are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • The league is mixed sex, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • In doubles teams may be any combination of gender
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also available on the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Collapse AllMeadows, Edinburgh Singles - Round 53 | Thursday 16 January 2020 to Wednesday 11 March 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 12 February 2020)

Some pretty terrible weather meant sometimes a league match was the only thing happening on the Meadows that day. Quite a testament then to your passion for tennis and determination not to let an opponent down that 60 percent of matches were completed. Here's to the warmer spring weather and another great round!

Group Summary:

A great debut performance from Colin who battled thorough some terrible weather to play (and win) more matches than anyone else in the group. Pedrog ran him close in the standings and edged a win over him in their head-to-head but has to be content this time with the silver just ahead of Benjamin who, curiously enough, beat Pedrog! Hoping for some better weather next round, but some lovely tennis and excellent commentaries nonetheless.

Final Rankings:

  1. Colin Black [W4, L1] 9 WINNER
  2. Pedrog Ichikawa-Bryant 7.2 [W3, L1] 6 RUNNER UP
  3. Benjamin Soh [W2, L1] 5
  4. Adam Etinson 10.1 [L2]
  5. Callum Macdonald 8.1 [L2]
  6. Iain MacRae [L2]

Match Results:

Reveal CommentColin Black bt Benjamin Soh (Mar 9) 6-3, 4-6, [10-8]

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks to Ben for playing this match despite the horrendous weather. The forecast of light rain was a bit of an understatement and torrential rain may have been more accurate. It was a very close fought match with the weather conditions making the bounce and trajectory of the ball very unpredictable. Both players fought on admirably and in the end the match could have gone either way. Special thanks to Ben for assisting me when injured my knee. Great sportsmanship!"  -- Colin
Reveal CommentColin Black bt Callum Macdonald (Mar 6) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks to Callum for the game. It was good to get this game played and the weather behaved itself apart from some unpredictable wind. It was a funmatch to play with some great defence by Callum meaning I always had to play an extra shot. Again thanks for the match Callum "  -- Colin
Reveal CommentBenjamin Soh bt Pedrog Ichikawa-Bryant (Feb 24) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Toughest match I've had in the league by far. Absolute pleasure playing a class opponent. All the best for the remainder of the league, Pedrog. "  -- Benjamin
Reveal CommentColin Black bt Iain MacRae (Feb 7) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks Iain for the game. We couldn’t have had better weather for the match- a glorious day. The match was much tougher than the score reflects. Iain had me scrambling about the court and I was fortunate my defensive shots landed the right side of the line. Once Iain finds his rhythm he’ll be a dangerous proposition "  -- Colin
Reveal CommentBenjamin Soh bt Callum Macdonald (Feb 4) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Happy to have found a decent patch of weather this time of year to get the round underway. Great wheels shown by Callum covering every inch of the court. All the best for the remaining matches! "  -- Benjamin
Reveal CommentColin Black bt Adam Etinson (Jan 31) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks Adam for a great game of tennis that could have gone either way. A few pivotal deuce games went my way or it could have been a different result Playing indoors led to some clean hitting and some very high quality points. I look forward to playing against Adam again "  -- Colin

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentPedrog Ichikawa-Bryant bt Colin Black (Jan 30) 6-3, 0-6, [10-4]

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks for playing tonight in horribly windy conditions. After a scrappy first set Colin really stepped up his game and in contrast I was completely unable to get anything working properly. Last week I felt great but throw in the turbulent conditions and suddenly everything becomes a whole lot more difficult! With time against us at 9:45, there wasn’t really an option of getting another set in so we opted for a match tie and luckily for me I was able to channel my inner Thomas Muster and scrape a result when all the momentum was going the other way. Hopefully next time we can get some better conditions and we’ll see a bit more of what we can both do!"  -- Pedrog
Reveal CommentPedrog Ichikawa-Bryant bt Adam Etinson (Jan 22) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "That was flat out two of the best sets of tennis I’ve played in ages! Thanks Adam for a really great game tonight. Playing indoors (and having had a bit more regular practice) made a big difference for me compared to last time we played. Some fantastic points on display tonight!"  -- Pedrog
Reveal CommentPedrog Ichikawa-Bryant bt Iain MacRae (Jan 21) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks for the game Iain, closer than the score line says - I worked very hard to not give anything away and there were several times you could have taken a game or two. Really nice to play during the day outdoors for a change without the need for lights! Lucky with the weather too - not that windy and light without being too bright."  -- Pedrog

Group Summary:

It was so cold at times this round that Keith and Colin had to resort to taking a kettle to the ice on court - real dedication. Perhaps unsurprisingly (especially as we had a withdrawal as well) the number of matches played suffered somewhat, so especially well done to Neil and Keith for earning their bonus points. Neil, in his first round in the league, was unbeaten and takes a well deserved gold!

Final Rankings:

  1. Neil Duff [W3] 8 includes 2 bonus points WINNER
  2. Keith Michell [W2, L1] 6 includes 2 bonus points RUNNER UP
  3. Mo Mirza [L2] 1
  4. David Hay [L1] withdrawn 1
  5. Colin Gill 8.1 [L1]
  6. Robert Marshall

Match Results:

Reveal CommentNeil Duff bt Mo Mirza (Jan 25) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Many thanks for the match today Mo. Much closer than the scoreline suggests! I really enjoyed playing today, even though we had to battle through the wind. Great to meet you and look forward to playing again in the future. Thanks again."  -- Neil

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentKeith Michell bt Mo Mirza (Jan 19) 4-6, 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A match played in good conditions especially considering the time of year. Mo dominated in the first set and I began the second lacking confidence and expecting defeat. A fortunate shot clipping the line eventually won me the set. The third was very close and I was relieved and rather surprised to win it. The match was exciting and with Mo frequently coming to the net the were some fun rallies. A most enjoyable match."  -- Keith
Reveal CommentKeith Michell bt Colin Gill (Jan 18) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Once we had poured boiling water onto parts of the court, to melt the frost, the match got underway. Colin made a strong start and quickly had a 3 game lead. I was then rather surprised that I started winning games and won the set 6-3. Colin didn't manage to get back to his previous form in the second set. This only returned when the match was over and we played an extra set. Now he was playing his best tennis, hitting some very nice shots and took the set 6-1."  -- Keith
Reveal CommentNeil Duff bt David Hay (Jan 18) 3-6, 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Great to enjoy some sunny tennis in January! Although as it turned out the low level sunshine and wind actually made for some challenging service conditions. I really enjoyed our match, and felt it was very close and evenly matched. The third set could have gone either way with a few points here and there. Thanks again David."  -- Neil
Reveal CommentNeil Duff bt Keith Michell (Jan 17) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "We had the good fortune of nice weather conditions after what has been a rather stormy week in Edinburgh. It was a pleasure to play against you Keith, and it was a close match. Many thanks once again."  -- Neil

Group Summary:

Lutz built on the momentum of his group win last time and again topped the standings but he had to work hard for the win. On a wind-affected day, Sivaraj had got the better of Lutz in a three-setter, so every point would count in the race for the top-spot! In the end it was Gytis who came closest to catching Lutz but no doubt in the who the champ was again this time.

Final Rankings:

  1. Lutz Eckart 10.2 [W3, L1] 9 includes 2 bonus points WINNER
  2. Gytis Balynas [W2, L2] 7 includes 2 bonus points RUNNER UP
  3. Paulius Gudenas [W2, L1] 6 includes 2 bonus points
  4. David Cullen [L3] 3 includes 2 bonus points
  5. Keith Martin [W1, L1] 2
  6. Sivaraj Saxena 8.2 [W1, L1] 2

Match Results:

Reveal CommentPaulius Gudenas bt Gytis Balynas (Feb 12) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "It was very challenging match against Gytis. Final result is not telling full story, since nearly every game was decided by deuce and lead changed multiple times. Every rally costed quite a lot of energy and cunning weather condition (slippery surface, cold wind gusts) was not giving any favours either. Luckily, I prevailed and claimed victory. Thank you Gytis for a great match and best of luck in future battles!"  -- Paulius
Reveal CommentSivaraj Saxena bt Lutz Eckart (Feb 8) 2-6, 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Not an ideal day for Tennis, but both managed to brave the gusty winds and play a good match. Thanks lutz."  -- Sivaraj
Reveal CommentKeith Martin bt David Cullen (Feb 6) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable match - the only court on play at the meadows! Some really good rallies with lobs and volleys attempted. I got off to a really slow start , going 1-4 down but somehow woke up and managed to get it completed in the end. Thanks David for a great game and best of luck with the remainder of the league. "  -- Keith
Reveal CommentLutz Eckart bt Paulius Gudenas (Feb 5) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "After having had to postpone twice, we finally managed to get this match played tonight. It has been a cold but pleasant enough night for playing some tennis. The games have been actually much tighter than the score might suggest. I enjoy playing against Paulius and appreciate the competiveness involved. I am already looking forward to playing a rematch during the upcoming round. By the way, thanks again for the chocolate selection which has been been delicious! "  -- Lutz
Reveal CommentPaulius Gudenas bt Keith Martin (Feb 4) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Calm Tuesday evening was a witness of a challenging and very intense match. Even though I managed to claim victory in 2 sets, I felt like I was playing 4 or 5 of them. Keith is very tough opponent, since he easily defeated me twice in the past. Luckily I prevailed this time. Thanks for a great duel and best of luck in future matches!"  -- Paulius
Reveal CommentGytis Balynas bt David Cullen (Feb 4) 6-2, 3-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "As always a very enjoyable match against David. Maybe we rushed a little bit towards the end but I am glad we finished quickly because the surface started to be slippery. Thanks David for a good match."  -- Gytis

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentLutz Eckart bt Gytis Balynas (Jan 22) 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8)

Player Comments:

  • "This has been a tight and rather unusual match. In the 3rd set there must have been hardly any service games won but instead plenty of breaks and more and more unforced errors on both sides as the set progressed. Nobody really deserved to win this set. In any case I enjoyed playing against Gytis who has a very unique style with lots of very low balls. "  -- Lutz
Reveal CommentGytis Balynas bt Sivaraj Saxena (Jan 19) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Very enjoyable first match against good opponent. Thanks, Sivaraj, for good match."  -- Gytis
Reveal CommentLutz Eckart bt David Cullen (Jan 18) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was a very pleasant and enjoyable match of tennis. Plenty of sunshine, decent temperatures and no wind made for conditions as good as it possibly can be in January in Scotland. David and I play on a very similar level, so the games were tight with some longer baseline exchanges as well as some action at the net. I am happy and lucky to have been able to win this rematch from round 52. Besides the tennis I also enjoyed the conversations we had during the changeovers, in between the sets and after the match - somehow we even managed to mention Winston Churchill at one point. I am looking forward to a continuation. "  -- Lutz

Group Summary:

A great, really busy group to anchor the round - benefiting surely from the many experienced league players in the group. Helen drew on her experience to earn scheduling bonus points and that was crucial to achieving her second Meadows group win. Bonus points also helped Eve edge ahead of Pierce in the table who will have to console himself with being the only unbeaten player in the group. Excellent tennis, and wonderful commentaries to bring the passion of Meadows tennis alive!

Final Rankings:

  1. Helen McMahon 9.1 [W4, L1] 11 includes 2 bonus points WINNER
  2. Eve Boyle 10.2 [W3, L2] 9 includes 2 bonus points RUNNER UP
  3. Pierce Glennie [W4] 8

Player Comments:

  • "Fun match but a strong wind and some rain to contend with. Hope to play again sometime on a still, sunny day. "  -- Pierce
Reveal CommentHelen McMahon bt Graeme White (Mar 4) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable match, most games were close and reached duece on lots of occasions, especially in the 2nd set as Graeme's serve and smash got better and better. I stayed consistent and focused, pushing until the end. Thanks "  -- Helen
Reveal CommentRuth Sutherland bt Graeme White (Mar 2) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks for a really enjoyable game, Graeme! That second set really could have gone either way, and I jus sneaked the win with some pretty jammy shots! We had to contend with dazzling, low winter sun, freak gusts of wind, and a sharp shower, but compared to recently we couldn’t complain. Plus we had the pick of all 16 courts - nobody else gallus enough to be out playing! Best of luck in your remaining matches, Graeme, I am still admiring your serve, your smashes, and your net skills!"  -- Ruth
Reveal CommentPierce Glennie bt Eve Boyle (Feb 27) 0-6, 7-5, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks for a fun game. Close match overall, after a very one sided first set in Eve’s favour. Lots of long points and close games."  -- Pierce

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentPierce Glennie bt Helen McMahon (Feb 26) 6-3, 2-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Finally got an icy game in after lots of rescheduling. Lots of close games. Tricky to run at the end without slipping but good fun"  -- Pierce
Reveal CommentGraeme White bt Deborah Gilliland (Feb 26) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It was good to get a tennis match in. The wind played a big part but we both got used to it after a few games. Overall it was quite evenly matched. There were many close games that went to deuce, but eventually Graeme was able to pull away in both sets for the win. "  -- Graeme
Reveal CommentEve Boyle bt Deborah Gilliland (Feb 18) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A raw, blustery morning on The Meadows, but thankfully it stayed more or less dry. No sign of the usual audience of parkbench drinkers, though; I hope they've found shelter this stormy February. A good open game, with each of us producing some winners to be proud of. The first set was over fairly quickly, but Deborah put up stiff resistance in the second set, and most games were close-run things. In the end I think I just made fewer errors. Thanks for the game, Deborah, and keep working on that serve - our next match will then be very different!"  -- Eve
Reveal CommentPierce Glennie bt Ruth Sutherland (Feb 8) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Windy but fun game in the meadows. Lots of close games. Lucky to finish ahead of the storm"  -- Pierce
Reveal CommentHelen McMahon bt Eve Boyle (Feb 6) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Great game with Eve. I began leading the first set, then Eve began a good come back, luckily for me I held strong. Some very close, long rallies! Thanks Eve"  -- Helen
Reveal CommentHelen McMahon bt Deborah Gilliland (Feb 5) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Good game with Deborah, thanks. A little rushed as it so happened to be a busy Wednesday night at the Meadows and there was no room for extending court time. We managed to complete just in time. The game started very competitively in the first set and again in the second set. I'm sure when Deborah gets her focus on the game would be a lot closer in score. A fun, energetic match with lots of exciting rallies and good use of court space! "  -- Helen
Reveal CommentHelen McMahon bt Ruth Sutherland (Feb 2) 7-6 (7-4), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Great playing with Ruth as always. A very close match, nerves and stress levels high, ongoing morning cold shower de-stresser required in future!.. The first set was was especially close, I thought Ruth may keep her cool and make a come back (like our last match), but I somehow kept deep breathing and managed to take the set. After that we played out the second set and I managed to keep more consistency. Great game, looking forward to the next one already. Thanks "  -- Helen
Reveal CommentEve Boyle bt Graeme White (Jan 25) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Another raw day on The Meadows, everyone's favourite windtunnel. Last year the hedges along the south and west sides of the courts afforded some protection from the wind, but now the Council have inexplicably cut them down to waist height. A very enjoyable match, though, with many games much closer than the overall score might suggest. Thanks Graeme, and good luck with your other games! "  -- Eve
Reveal CommentEve Boyle bt Ruth Sutherland (Jan 20) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Brr! It didn't appear to be at all windy until we got within 100 metres of the courts, where it suddenly turned cold and gusty, but that's what we all love about The Meadows! There has never been very much in it when Ruth and I play, so I was fortunate to get a head start in the first set. The second was very different, Ruth racing to a 3-0 lead before I clawed my way back. An appreciative crowd (two morning drinkers and their three-and-a-half-legged dog), cheering us on from the park bench, just added to the competitive atmosphere. Thanks for playing at short notice, Ruth - it's good to get this group started."  -- Eve
