Player Comments:

  • "A pleasure to play Andrew again A good standard of tennis played throughout the match. Hopefully see you in the next round "  -- Peter
Reveal CommentPaul Quinn bt Stephen Bowens (Mar 17) 7-6 (7-3), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Always good to play Steve and there were some cracking rallies and shouts of appreciation from my side of the net as another of Steve's forehands arrowed into the corner. We started at 2pm and the first set took until 3:30pm. Steve was 4-1 and 5-2 up in the first until the tennis Gods turned the tide and it was my turn to win a run of games. This continued into the second set where I went 3-0 up until we traded being unable to hold serve until the finish. Well played Steve, I am sure that your revenge will come when the courts dry out and the bounce gets higher."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentFrancisco Benitez bt Stephen Bowens (Mar 14) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Many thanks to Steve that agreed to play despite having other commitments. Steve struggled to get in the game and that gave me the opportunity to get 4 consecutive games in spite of the long rallies and many deuces. Then, Steve held serve and I thought this could be a swing of momentum, so I gather my composture to clinch the set. The initial games of the second set (2-2) were more the type of game I usually have with Steve who decided to take a more aggresive approach by coming forward to hit volleys and finding angles. Unlike other games against him, I managed to defend decently from my backhand and that gave me the confidence to hit the ball harder and clinch victory by winning the last 4 games. Good luck for your last match, Steve!"  -- Francisco
Reveal CommentAndrew Chandler bt Craig Taylor (Mar 11) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A damp day, but the rain held off and we had a really enjoyable game at Beverley. Craig stormed in to a 3-0 lead in the first set, but I managed to hang in and at 5-5 it could have gone either way. I took an early lead in the second, but Craig came back in to it and it seemed like all of the games went to deuce. Well played Craig and look forward to the next match."  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentPaul Quinn bt Andrew Chandler (Mar 8) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A cold and breezy day at Beverley but Richard soon had me warmed up as he moved me around the court. Richard is extremely quick around the court and a very difficult guy to get past at the net. I feel that the breezy conditions had more of an impact on Richard's game than mine and I came through a very tight match that could have gone either way. Well played Richard and see you on court again soon."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentAndrew Chandler bt Alan Patterson (Mar 4) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Perfect conditions out on court at Beverley today and a really enjoyable tennis match. At 4-4, the first set could have gone either way, but I managed to close it out after a couple of tight games. There were some really good rallies in the second set, but the momentum from the first set helped get me over the line. Look forward to playing Alan again in future."  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentPaul Quinn bt Craig Taylor (Mar 4) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Another beautiful day at Beverley with very little breeze and lots of bright sunshine. Craig and I have had many a tussle and play regularly but today Craig was off his game by his own high standards. His trademark drop shots were not working and his normally reliable angled shots to the corners were going out. Very enjoyable to be on court with Craig as always, a match played in the best of spirits. See you for doubles tomorrow Craig!"  -- Paul
Reveal CommentStephen Bowens bt Craig Taylor (Mar 3) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable match as ever with Craig. Loads of the games were close but I managed to get the rub of the green this time, Craig winning the time before. Thanks for the game. "  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentCraig Taylor bt Alan Patterson (Feb 26) 4-6, 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A good, competitive match played in difficult, windy conditions. The first set was really close and could have gone either way. Heavy, wet balls and a gusty wind meant that both players had a fair share of mis-hits. However, Alan's mis-hits were generally more effective than mine! A change of balls for the second set led to some good rallies and a lot more running and the set was much closer than the scoreline suggests. After two hours and three sets I was mightily relieved to clinch the result. A great, enjoyable match. Cheers."  -- Craig
Reveal CommentAndrew Chandler bt Stephen Bowens (Feb 25) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Fine weather on court today with blue skies and light winds. The opening few games in the first set were very close with one game in particular having about 12 deuce points. I won that game and the momentum helped me close out the set. I took an early lead in the second, but Steve battled back and at 5-5, it could easily have gone either way. Well played Steve, really enjoyed the match."  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentFrancisco Benitez bt Peter Orchard (Feb 25) 7-5, 5-7, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "I don't have words to describe how hard I had to work to beat Peter whose tennis standard is legendary in this league. As usual in this tight games many shifts of moment in the first two sets with both players managing to move each other from corner to corner and avoiding unforced errors made losing rallies ver frustrating. In the deciding set, I found more depth in my backhand that let me push Peter further back and turn the game by coming back from Peter's lead 2-1. Best of luck for your last game in this round and hoping to play you again soon, Peter!"  -- Francisco
Reveal CommentFrancisco Benitez bt Andrew Chandler (Feb 24) 6-2, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "I really appreciate Andrew coming to play to Gosforth in glorious sunshine. It took some time for Andrew to adapt to the higher bounce on the tarmac surface and that allowed me to see the first set out 6-2. In the second set I kept consistency and momentum up to the 5-2 when it swang due to Andrew playing more aggresively by attacking my backhand with slice shots and coming forward to clinch many net points that let him achieve an impressive 4 games run to set the score 5-6. Then I found some composture to hold serve and win the tie-breaker lottery. Good luck for the remainder of the round, Andrew!"  -- Francisco
Reveal CommentPeter Orchard bt Craig Taylor (Feb 22) 6-1, 6-1

  • "Thoroughly enjoyable match played on a lovely day at the coast. Many close games and good rallies that fortunately went my way. All the best Steve for rest of the tournament "  -- Peter
Reveal CommentPaul Quinn bt Alan Patterson (Feb 16) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A beautiful , sunny Friday afternoon at Beverley and a pleasure to meet Alan for the first time. A strange first set in which I nailed every shot and Alan was making mistakes. In that set it always felt closer than the score and in the second set Alan found much greater consistency and raced to a 4-1 lead, winning four straight games. The tennis Gods then decided it was my turn to go on a winning streak. Alan carried no luck early on but showed great resilience to come back so hard in a very tight second set. The best of luck in your remaining games Alan."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentFrancisco Benitez bt Craig Taylor (Feb 14) 7-6 (7-2), 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "First of all, thanks and credit to Craig for coming from Whitley Bay to play this fabulous and incredibly tight game with many swings of momentum and serve holds after extraordinary comebacks from 0/40 and 15/40 by both of us. In the first set, Craig's slice shots put me in trouble as he got a 2-4 solid lead. Three consecutive games game me the opportunity to return for the set but Craig fought back. I somehow managed to prevail in the tie-breaker. The second set was a similar story when I struggled to read Craig's curling shots and hit my bottom when failing an easy forehand only a few foot away from the net which meant a 3-5 lead for Craig. I then broke and won the next three to clinch victory. Best of luck for your next games, Craig!"  -- Francisco

  • "Great to be on court with Peter again. A top player and a top bloke. He was kind enough to let me when three games this time which is three more than I managed last time! Well played and enjoy your remaining games." -- Paul
Reveal CommentPaul Quinn bt Francisco Benitez (Feb 7) 4-6, 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Mi nuevo amigo espanol, Francisco! A really enjoyable game to be part of played in sunshine and relatively little wind. Long rallies were numerous and there were some fantastic points won by both players. I really struggled with Francisco's serve, particularly in the first set when the balls were new and had plenty of bounce. Winning a point was very difficult so when I made a mistake it felt twice as painful as Francisco offered very few free points. Our first time together on court and I look forward to many more and a return game in Gosforth. Bien jugado and good luck for your remaining fixtures."  -- Paul
  • "I really enjoyed this game and I can say I played my best tennis for a set and a half. All the credit to Paul whose determination to win was unbeatable! Toda la suerte para el resto de la ronda y te veo pronto!" -- Francisco
Reveal CommentAlan Patterson bt Stephen Bowens (Feb 4) 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, [10-6]

Player Comments:

  • "Steve got off to a flier taking an early 4-1 lead before somehow I managed to claw myself back into the set to win the tiebreak. Steve again seemed to cope better with the increasingly gusty conditions, hitting some great winners to take the second 6-4. With the strong winds now back from earlier in the week, it became almost unplayable as the ball began to comically swerve all over in the wind - punishing decent shots from us both. Rather than rearrange a full third set we decided to play a tiebreak decider. It could have gone either way however a revival in my serving got me over the line . Hopefully we will play again under better conditions Steve, good luck with the rest of the round."  -- Alan
Reveal CommentFrancisco Benitez bt Alan Patterson (Feb 2) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Not much to comment on this game (Alan would agree) played in the swirling wind that massively affected the quality of tennis of both players. Should the wind be weaker it would've been a much better experience and more enjoyable game with plenty of long rallies but unfortunately it wasn't the case. Good luck for the remainder of the round, I'm sure you'll get plenty of much better results, Alan, and looking forward to playing in better weather conditions next time!"  -- Francisco
Reveal CommentPeter Orchard bt Alan Patterson (Jan 31) 6-2, 6-3

  • "Always seems to be a lush sunny day whenever I play at Bohemians for some reason. I couldn't hit a serve to save my life for the first few games, so Peter went 3-1 up, then I started finding my rhythm and although the rallies got longer the game swung my way. Always good to play Peter especially in such nice weather and a nice club. "  -- Richard

Player Comments:

  • "An AI generated match report: James proved too strong for Louise in a thrilling two-set battle. He took the first set 6-4, then sealed the victory with a 7-5 win in the second. The match was full of competitive rallies, but James's powerful serve and aggressive groundstrokes ultimately made the difference. Real match report: Just a bit of a giggle. Had fun. This came could have gone either way but we were both winners as had fun."  -- James
Reveal CommentNick Davies bt James Sainter (Feb 24) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Good to play James again today. The sun made serving very challenging and we both struggled at times with consistency. The first set was competitive and I managed to take it 6-3. Second set I hit a lot more winners and comfortably took the match. Cheers James "  -- Nick

Reveal CommentRichard Hammond bt James Sainter (Feb 19) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Played indoors on carpet with James today. The game seemed to be down entirely to our service games, not many long rallies, possibly in part due to me struggling to adjust to the carpet. Luckily I seemed to keep my serve going where James had a bit of a drop in level. James hit some great dropshots and returns but I think my serve consistency swung it."  -- Richard
Reveal CommentJim Maguire bt Louise Tupling (Feb 18) 6-4, 6-4

  • "Match played at Cullercoats on a lovely, spring like, afternoon. The court surface seemed to suit my game better than Louise’s, with the ball taking spin or skidding low. Always a pleasure Louise and looking forward to our next game."  -- Jim
Reveal CommentJake Clark bt Nick Davies (Feb 18) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Great to play Nick again this afternoon. We had lots of well-fought points and close games. I took the first set after a run of games. The second set started very tight with both of us holding serve to get to 3-3. We then had a long battle on Nick’s serve, which could have very easily gone either way. Fortunately I won it and kept the momentum to take the next few. Thanks Nick! Look forward to the rematch. "  -- Jake
Reveal CommentNick Davies bt Jim Maguire (Feb 17) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable game at Richardson Dees Park this morning and great to meet Jim for the first time. We played two competitive sets with a bit more consistency and less unforced errors from my side being the main difference. Jim and I have quite a similar, self-deprecating personality on the court when we make errors which gave this game a humorous element as well. After the game finished, Jim and I played some rallies and practiced our groundstrokes. I imagine the scoreline will be a lot tighter next time round as Jim is now well aware of my weakness! Cheers Jim, and I look forward to our rematch at the Northumberland Club"  -- Nick

Player Comments:

  • "Always great to play Richard and we always have a super close match. This was no exception! All three sets were full of tight games, long rallies and winners from both of us. After I took the first, Richard had the momentum in the second set winning it quite comfortably. He then went 4-2 up in the last set before I managed to claw back and end up taking four games in a row. Safe to say we were both well and truly done at that point! Cheers Richard - all the best for your other games and I look forward to the rematch. "  -- Jake

Player Comments:

  • "Battled through ridiculous conditions with Louise this morning, the wind was intermittently ridiculous and we played in driving hailstone for a few minutes. I was struggling to serve but seemed to get the benefit of the wind on most points, a good workout for us both chasing balls all over the court! Some good rallies somehow, and plenty of long games.
