Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • We have doubles and singles rounds!
  • Players/teams are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • The league is mixed sex, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • In doubles teams may be any combination of gender
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also available on the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Group Summary:

Some great tennis played in Group 1 this round with everyone having to work hard for their victories, which is just what we want! Tomi's winning streak ended with the return of Luke, who just pipped him to the winners podium with 6 victories to his 5, their head-to-head proving the decider for the title, and good to see so many of the points finished with winners rather than errors! Congratulations to everyone in this group for played so many matches at such a competitive level, we look forward to seeing you all again next time!

Group Summary:

On paper it's a bit of a game of two halves in Group 2, with the top 4 players all gaining bonus points and getting lots of games in, with the lower end of the group playing fewer matches and struggling a bit for a win. However, the commentaries show just how wrong that can be - lots of competitive matches, with just the odd point/winner/error making the difference and plenty of shifts in momentum. Congratulations to Daniel though for a clean sweep of points - 7 victories and bonus points is an impressive return as winner. Well played also to Keiren who narrowly missed the top spot, ending as runner-up with 6 solid wins. We hope to see you all again next time for more epic battles!

Group Summary:

More great tennis played in Group 3 during this round despite the ridiculously windy conditions in some matches though. Well done for battling on! Several commentaries mentioned spectators and other distractions - wind, sun, balls from other courts, kids on other courts, BST clocks changing etc - it's amazing the impact these little things have on a match! Nevertheless, we saw some competitive match-ups and lots of great tennis. Most of you got at least one win and nearly 70% of matches were played - well done everyone. Congratulation to Patrick for just pipping Andy to the podium place - both on 10 points, but with 5 wins against his 4 Patrick takes the gold!

Player Comments:

  • "A game of fine margins under the lights at Eaton Park, with lung-busting rallies and see-saw changes of momentum. Andy has quick hands, especially when at the net, and was adept at throwing in the occasional unplayable drop shot to disrupt my rhythm. For once, the tally of dodgy net cords was shared evenly! Great to meet you Andy and look forward to playing you again sometime!"  -- Patrick

Clifford, I hope you don't mind me suggesting that a combination of sun, wind, small boy on the court next to us, BST clock changes and all my mis-hits turning into unplayable winners contributed to one of those days. Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable match and certainly closer than the score suggests with a number of games going to deuce. Well contested. Thanks Alex for being a great sport and I hope to play you again in a future round. Such was the quality we even attracted one discerning member of the public who watched most of the match. I think she may have helped me win, because at 4-2 30-40 and having just put in a good serve to pull back from 15-40, I was winding up to serve when the ball came across from the adjacent court. I would've ignored it but one of the players followed it. My look of frustration was noticed and greeted with a wry smile by our spectator. Possibly this helped me retain focus, I don't remember the serve that followed but I won the point and game."  -- Roger

Reveal CommentHarry Seddon bt Victoria Chubb (Apr 17) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Once you can tie down the arrangements with Victoria (!) you can expect an enjoyable good-spirited game of tennis - as was the case today on the last day of the round. Most rallies were fairly short on the day; some because Victoria played some deadly, very flat shots down my backhand; others because I enjoy trying to play serve and volley where possible. Victoria says that's quite unusual and it probably reflects my early tennis being in the wood-frame and cat-gut era. I am sure she could have returned several of my volleys but was maybe affected by the 'hustle' factor of a volleying game. Anyway, thanks Victoria for an enjoyable match."  -- Harry

Reveal CommentHarry Seddon bt Mike Dixon (Mar 28) 7-6 (8-6), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Conditions were great for this match. The first set was about as close as it is possible for a set to be. Every time I got my nose in front Mike hauled me back - especially with a series of backhand lobs that left me stranded at the net. Having not been behind at all, I was suddenly 'looking down the barrel'; 2-6 down in the tie-break. Somehow I scraped the next six points to take the set. The second set was equally entertaining if less close, with enjoyable rallies throughout. It must be recorded that Mike had played a three-setter with Cathy Geary immediately before his fixture with me, which surely gave me some undeserved advantage. Good fun, Mike. Thanks a lot."  -- Harry
