"Playing in the league has improved my game without question! The competition has motivated me to stay fit and to practice. Also, match play itself is a learning experience; being under pressure and still able to hit good second serves and hard top-spin baseline shots without the body tightening up takes many matches to achieve.
Also, through the Local Tennis Leagues I was able to visit the Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy for a week in October to play a seniors (over 30s) social tennis tournament. It was a fantastic experience and I met many wonderful people from other local leagues, played at a higher level than I have ever done before, had great coaching and enjoyed excellent food, spa, gym and accommodation. Basically a tennis paradise, which I hope to return to next year! Apparently Rafa Nadal was in the spa on my last day but unfortunately I missed him. Next time! Would I recommend the league? Absolutely 100% YES!!!!!!!!"

Collapse AllSheffield Singles - Round 48 | Thursday 17 September 2020 to Wednesday 4 November 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 14 October 2020)

A shame we had to end the round early due to lockdown but this was still another bumper round in Sheffield with lots of close and exciting contests across the groups. A great effort all round and we look forward to getting going again soon!

Group Summary:

Reveal CommentJohn Watson bt Bradley Heinink (Oct 25) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

Reveal CommentMark McCarrick bt Bradley Heinink (Oct 23) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

Player Comments:

  • "Probably the longest and most even match I've ever played in these leagues down the years. Had to finish this over two days playing in total for about four hours. A re-match is much needed at some point ... when I've eventually physically recovered!"  -- Mark

Player Comments:

  • "I think it's fair to say, neither of us enjoyed this match by the end. Tricky weather conditions and a slippery surface made for a very unpredictable and difficult game, so not much can be read into the result. Match Results:

Reveal CommentMarc Craddock bt Daniel De Arriba (Nov 4) 6-4, 1-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Not sure where to start with this one! Played in glorious sunshine at hillsborough. Nervy game at points with Dani playing for league winner and myself trying to get another match under the belt. We both played consistent tennis and lots of net play from Dani whilst my service game kept me in it if the 1st serve worked. A real battle of attrition where Dani had to put up with me moaning about pulling my calf muscle (or cramp) mid 3rd set. Absolutely spent in the last 3 games and I think Dani took pity on me as we played soft nervy tennis at the end. Good luck to Dani and Damian who should progress to the next league and I’ll see the rest of you guys when we are allowed back. Great league 👍🏻"  -- Marc
Reveal CommentMartin Rockett bt Leo McCann (Nov 3) 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1

Reveal CommentMartin Rockett bt Daniel De Arriba (Nov 2) 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "As you can see by the score this could have gone either way, it was a real marathon. Daniel is ultra consistent and a very tough opponent. A very enjoyable match against a great guy."  -- Martin
Reveal CommentMartin Rockett bt Andrew West (Oct 30) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Very enjoyable match, very nip and tuck. Andrew is consistent tough opponent who could easily have won this."  -- Martin
Reveal CommentMarc Craddock bt Leo McCann (Oct 30) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Bit of an unfair score line as it was a close match with long rallies and battles of attrition to the point in the 2nd set where we both started missing sitters at the net. Service game managed to pull me through some tight spots. Did not help that court was a bit slippy with a couple of inevitable falls! Good luck in your remaining matches Leo and thanks for the game "  -- Marc
Reveal CommentDaniel De Arriba bt Andrew West (Oct 23) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It was lovely to meet Andrew and I look forward to checking out his tennis club. The game was closer than the score suggests and Andrew did some good volleying and passing shots. He will be a formidable opponent once he gets his match fitness back."  -- Daniel
Reveal CommentDamian Milewski bt Aatif Razaq (Oct 22) 6-4, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "Zombie-mode game! Both barely alive, lots of errors and bad serves. Couldnt get into the zone. Aatif played some nice crosscourts attacks, and some nice strong 1st serves. Close match. Should have been 3-setter but i got lucky at 5:4 (40:15) and miracleusly managed to brake that game. Indoor courts are nice but lighting was a bit too bright and sometimes we couldnt get the good hit."  -- Damian
Reveal CommentLeo McCann bt Aatif Razaq (Oct 18) 6-1, 3-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "An incredibly tough match against Aatif. I started well and was in a decent position in set 2, before some kind of switch flipped in Aatif's mind and he came out blazing topspin groundstroke winners from everywhere. He played so well I didn't win a point for about 4 games! Final set was extremely tight, and could have gone either way from 4-4. I was lucky to scrape it on this occasion. Thanks Aatif, hope to play with you again soon."  -- Leo
Reveal CommentMartin Rockett bt Dan Wray (Oct 16) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Good match although courts were a bit slippery which impeded movement. First set was anybody's but a few more unforced errors crept into Dan's game in the second. That said, Dan has only been playing tennis for a few months so his standard is very good taking that into account."  -- Martin
Reveal CommentDamian Milewski bt Leo McCann (Oct 7) 2-6, 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Huge rollercoaster! Leo smashed me in first set 6:2 playing wery well. 2nd set he was winning 5:3 (15:0) and next point seemed to be a game changer. I managed to come back and win 7:5 and also 3rd set. Leo has a very sneaky, low and strong forehand to the opponents backhand and nice variety of shots. Honestly he could have easily won 2:0 in sets. I think in 3rd set too many unforced errors were crucial and also slippery conditions wasnt helpful for court movement. Anyway thanks Leo for match, was a good fun and challange :)"  -- Damian
Reveal CommentDamian Milewski bt Andrew West (Oct 7) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Good game. Andrew made too many unforced errors in 1st set. 2nd set was very even. Andrew has got very strong 1st serve, also strong strokes and ability to win long rallies. Was not easy to execute passing shots when he was attacking the net. I think next match could go eiter way. We played 3rd set as a practise and he won 7-6 (10-8) so it shows he is a dangerous opponent. Thanks for the game."  -- Damian
Reveal CommentDaniel De Arriba bt Dan Wray (Oct 2) 6-3, 6-0

Dan is getting back into tennis after a long break and just needs some time on court to get rid of the unforced errors. Dan is a great guy and a pleasure to hit with. After competition match, we played extra practise sets and the results were 7:6, 4:3 which means Marty is a really tough opponent. Also, he has good 1st serve and consistent 2nd serve. He was looking for winners and wasn't afraid of taking risks. There were so many unpredictable rallies too. Cheers, Marty. "  -- Damian
