Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt James Douglas (Sep 22) 6-4, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Another amazing match, honest and extremely powerful tennis, my wrist is surely going tomorrow but it was worth it. The opener was very close and could have gone either way especially as James was serving at 4:4 with a few game points but I managed to break and the hold my serve. Second set lot closer than scorw suggests as first 4 games went to deuce. Some fantastic shots on my sides and what a pace. Many thanks James, quality as always."  -- Pavel

Reveal CommentEmma Tully bt Phil Chin (Sep 17) 3-6, 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "This was a very close match and could have gone either way really. I was initially winning the first set but then Phil broke back, played better, and then took 5 games in a row to win it 6-3. The next 2 sets were very close with many deuce games, in which I played with slightly better consistency. A good close match."  -- Emma
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt Phil Chin (Sep 13) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Match a lot closer than scoreline suggests, especially in first set where 4 games went to deuce and could have gone either way. Second set saw some fantastic serves from Phil without giving much chance of a return - a little more of these and it would have been a tight match. Thanks Phil and welcome to group 1 - until next round. Pavel"  -- Pavel
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt Andrew De Csillery (Sep 12) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "I genuinely feel bad recording this score as long standing members of group 1 know that the scoreline doesn't make any sense given our previous league matches. A few things made a big difference this time. In the opener in all 3 of his serve games Andrew v was 40:30 up but I managed to break by winning the next 3 rallies. My serve isn't the best as you all know but itc was consistent today and I wasn't broken once. Also Andrew didn't hit as many winners as usual whilst I made very few unforced errors. Last but not least Andrew was suffering from neck pain and that reflected on the power of his serve. Nice match with some very beautiful rallies. Until next Andrew and if find myself on the losing sine you know I won't mind at all. Many thanks"  -- Pavel
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt Emma Tully (Sep 11) 6-2, 6-1

Reveal CommentAndrew De Csillery bt Emma Tully (Sep 9) 6-0, 6-1

Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt Darren Guy (Sep 8) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "It is great to see Darren back in the league, he was missed. I named the him Darren the Wall with a deadly forehand and he did not disappoint - when his forehand winner shots cane they were simply beautiful and I watched them with envy. This match could have gone either way as it is always the case with Darren. The opener - Darren takes a comfortable 3:0 lead, I manage to collect myself to 2:3 but then 2:5 down I thought I was done. Somehow I won the next 5 games though Darren had a break point at 5:6 down. I started well in the second with 4:1 lead, Darren fought back 4:3 but with a bit more consistency I closed at 6:3. Well played Darren, quality as always. Thank you"  -- Pavel

Player Comments:

  • "An epic match lasting 2 and a half hours. Tight first set until Liam won last 3 games to take it 6-3. I fought back in the second set to take it 6-2. Liam raced into a 5-2 lead in the final set and it was looking all over but I managed to claw my way back to 6-6. Liam had a match point at 6-5 in the tie break which I managed to save and then break to take it 8-6! Great match Liam played in good spirit. Well played. "  -- Darren
Reveal CommentLiam Baldwin bt Andrew De Csillery (Sep 5) 2-6, 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "This was one of the the most epic Matches I've played of late! Andrew was very consistent in the first set and I kept missing my big shots meaning I lost it 2-6 then in the 2nd set Andrew was a little less consistent than the first, I managed to raise my game and was hitting massive ground strokes and getting them in throughout this set and I took it 6-1 in the 3rd I lost my way once again and Andrew played some excellent backhand winners! To take a comfortable 2-5 lead, at 0-30 down on my serve I recovered and broke and then held to make it 5-5, I found my big shots once again and Andrew was Starting to get tired towards then end, as I managed to get the next 2 games and win that set 7-5! great match and well played to Andrew! Player Comments:

  • "First set was tight all the way, with lots of long games going to multiple deuces. From 4-4 I managed to take the next two games to close out the set. Jonny took a 3-0 lead in the second and although I looked like I might get back into it at 3-2, Jonny pulled away again with some strong serving and consistent ground strokes to win 6-2. I took a 3-1 lead in the third and had chances to go 4-1 up, but Jonny pulled it back to 3-3 and it could have gone either way from there as we both became increasingly cautious. Luckily I outlasted Jonny in some long rallies and long games, and took the set 6-4. Thanks for the game Jonny!"  -- Miles

Chris's gal is a lot stronger than mine right now so I had to pay quite defensively to win. If I had tried to play more attacking he would have won. As was shown in the friendly set we played after he match!! hanks Chris. Look forward to the next match. Ant"  -- Antony

Chris manage to snap my serve from me right at the first of the 1st set to take it, though the momentum quickly changed in the 2nd. I think we were both losing focus and energy a little bit in the third, but I managed to wrap things up when it mattered."  -- Jonny
Reveal CommentMiles Robinson bt Christopher Perry (Sep 26) 7-5, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Very tight first set, with Chris being up 3-1 and then 5-4. At that point Chris's error count increased and I was able to take the set 7-5. The second set started with two very tight games which I managed to edge, and this proved decisive as I was able to run away with the set 6-1. • "After a delay owing to club floodlight issues followed by a rain delay Daniel broke my opening game and held his putting me 2-0 down. I managed to find some decent placement on deeper balls and took the next 6 tight games to clinch the first set. The Daniel stormed off to two breaks up to be 3-0 but again I managed to recompose and keep the ball in play to come back to 3-3. Broken again Daniel was serving for the set at 5-3 but I held on exchanging breaks to get to a tie break which I was lucky enough to take to avoid a third set! Look forward to playing Daniel again."  -- Christopher

I found some consistency on my serve and Daniel struggled with his but it still could have gone either way at 4-4: fortunately I managed to take the set 6-4. The second was less close as Daniel again battled with his serve - from 2-2 I took a 5-2 lead, and although Daniel saved three match points in a game with at least 10 deuces, I took the set 6-3. The 2nd started with Dave really going for his shots and smashing them from all angles to race into a 3-0 lead. however I managed to claw myself back into take the the 2nd set and the match. Player Comments:

  • "The first set started well for Dave and he went 4-1 with some hard fought games, some going to multiple deuces. I managed to fight back to 5-5 before Dave secured a crucial game to go 6-5 before securing the set. The second set also had some exceptionally tight games but I managed to get an upper hand early to go 3-0 and then held out to win 6-2. The decider was slightly quicker as Dave started to tire and I managed to use that to my advantage and win 6-1. Ultimately, a closely fought game and I look forward to another one soon. Thanks Dave!"  -- Michael
Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt Stuart Mackay (Oct 5) 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A really long first point set the scene for the match and I knew it was going to be a long night! Stuart got ahead in the first set playing a solid set with more patiance during the long rallies. The second set was as close as they get with some great points, I did sneak ahead with a run of net cords and served for the set twice with Stuart breaking back both times. Stuart raced ahead 4-0 in the tie break and I somehow managed to turn it around to take it 7-4. The battle continued in the third and at 4-4, 40-30 to Stu I completely missed a high volley in the floodlights and in a great bit of sportsmanship Stu called his shot out. I broke and from 0-40 down on my serve I came back to hold. A great match to play in!"  -- Richard

Reveal CommentNick Bunstead bt Zac Sargusingh (Sep 24) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A lovely sunny day for tennis and a very enjoyable match with Zac. I played one of my better matches and managed to hit quite a lot of lines during the match. Some very good rallies and close games, but I was able to dominate the first set. The second set was much tighter, which is not reflected in the score line. The first game of the second set with Zac serving went to about deuce 6 as we both fought for the early advantage. I managed to edge it, and it was a similar story throughout the second set with many tight games. I was able to dig in to save a number of game points and break points. Thanks a lot for the game Zac!"  -- Nick

On another day it could have been different! well played Michael."  -- Stuart

He really dug in and played some great shots. Although the score looked easy, it wasn't. Good luck in your remaining matches Zac. Thanks"  -- Simon
Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt Michael Andrews (Sep 10) 7-6 (7-5), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "The first set was as tight as they come, both of us put a lot of pressure on the others service games with many long games. The wind played havoc throughout but some good tennis was played during the first set. It got a bit tense towards the end and I saved 2 set points on my serve at 5-6. I just got ahead in the tie break to snatch it. Michael took an early break in the second punishing some of my shorter shots with some nice aggressive play. We then had to deal with rain to add to the wind which was only just about playable on the all weather courts. At 2-4 down I went on to win the next 4 games to win the second in some crazy weather! Really tough game Michael gets everything back, well played!"  -- Richard
Reveal CommentNick Bunstead bt Richard Washbrook (Sep 9) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Playing conditions were not the easiest as the court was quite slippery from rain earlier in the day. That made movement difficult, so the points were generally quick with quite a few unforced errors. We also both really struggled to hold serve. Nevertheless, some really nice touches from Richard, especially a few great passing forehand cross court winners. Thanks for the game Richard and hope to play again soon! "  -- Nick
Reveal CommentNick Bunstead bt Michael Andrews (Sep 7) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Michael got off to an excellent start breaking me to love in the opening game with some nice passing shots and a clever lob. The set was close at 2-2 and could easily have been 3-3 but I managed to find a bit more consistency and pull away. The second set was a similar story with Michael breaking me in the opening game. Very fun match, thanks Michael!"  -- Nick
Reveal CommentNick Bunstead bt Dave Martell (Sep 5) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Very enjoyable match with some competitive, close games despite what the scoreline suggests. Lots of good rallies, although the court provided a few dodgy bounces. Thanks a lot Dave!"  -- Nick
Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt Dave Martell (Sep 1) 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "As the scoreline suggests a close match where Dave looked like he had it in the bag in the second set. I started off well in the first set with a break up serving well, capitalising on some unforced errors. Dave found some consistency in his serving and forehand, he dictated everything at the end of the set and won the tie break comfortably. This carried on in the second set and I made so many errors, at 0-3 down I thought I was done, but managed to get it back to 3-4 and somehow ground out a few games by sticking in the points. I took the second set which I think I probably didn’t deserve. I got an early break in the final set and kept ahead to take it. A really hard-won game where Dave was the better player on the day. Reveal CommentSimon Phillips bt Ed Blake (Oct 3) 7-6 (7-3), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This was a topsy turvy match and came down to who could finally hold their serve. The 1st set went to a tie break after neither of us could hold our serves and we swapped breaks. I was fortunate to get the rub of the green in the tie break. The 2nd second followed the first set, with Ed and Inswapping breaks and then each holding a service game before swapping a pair of breaks, and 5-4 Inserved out for the win and managed to hold serve. A very close game that could of gone either way. "  -- Simon

Reveal CommentEd Blake bt Tim Kidd (Sep 26) 6-3, 6-7, [10-8]

Player Comments:

  • "This match was so close it felt more like a draw. The first set was a bit scrappy with quite a few unforced errors on both sides, but the quality improved in the second set with plenty of long rallies and deuce games. Tim was playing well and managed to take the tie break 7-2. The first two sets had taken over two hours and we were running out of time, so rather than postpone the third set we decided to play a championship tie break which I was lucky to just scrape through. Thanks for the match Tim, looking forward to the next one."  -- Ed
