Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

"Excellent fun, really enjoyed it, met some nice people, am looking forward to the next round,"

Sunil Mehra

"Am really pleased to have joined the St Albans version of what I used to play at Highbury Fields. Great that Ed is a member at Townsend TC as we got to play on clay. A competitive match with some long rallies. I look forward to playing Ed again sometime,"

Alun Davies

"What a lovely write up. It's nice to get mentioned a few times too, even though I couldn't get a single win. Never mind, it was my first go! This was my first ever time playing competitive tennis and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought everybody was really friendly and there was no tennis snobbery to be seen - something that I had previously been afraid of. I have already played Bish again and managed to get a set off him, so there's hope for me in the next round. You guys deserve continued success with this venture, it really works well. I look forward to the next round as my next task is to sign up for the next league,"

David Taske

"I think the set-up you run is absolutely fantastic. Met some great people already and enjoyed some wonderful tennis. Tthank you once again for arranging such an enjoyable and competitive round. I may have lost a few more matches this time round, but for me the players you assembled were a good bunch, each talented players in their own way and as a result I enjoyed the challenge that much more - so thank you. Keep up the good work!"

Bjorn Johnson

"Its been a great contest and I will certainly been playing again in the new year"

Michael Sanders

"Want to say a big thanks to both you and Sally for all your help! You're a credit to yourselves and tennis at grassroots level,"

Anthony

  • "We played this match on Astro, Tom made a much better start as he is used too this surface and soon took a 4-0 lead with big serving and forehands, I then managed too win one back 4-1 before Tom sealed the set 6-1 in the 2nd I broke and went 4-1 up, as I started going for my shots more but still struggled for consistency as Tom made a mini come-back getting it back too 4-3, I managed too hold Serve 5-3 and then sealed it 6-4. In the decider I really found all my shots and returned really well finally able too get Toms big first serve back into play. Tom made a few too many errors as I managed too adapt too the surface and take the set 6-0! this was my biggest set loss (6-1) in local tennis leagues, credit too Tom as he will do well in Div 1"  -- Liam
Reveal CommentKevin Lomas bt Laurence Neal (Mar 24) 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Was great to play the new addition to league 1 and the match didn't disappoint. The first set was low on quality with both of us getting a feel for the surface with a topsey turvey set which could have gone either way. The second set was high in aggression and quality with both of us serving well with winners from both of us and long tiring rally's. At 3-3 we had a long game with a few dueces and once lawrence had broken me he saw out the set well. In the 3rd set we were both tiring and i took a 5-1 lead only for lawrence to storm back to 5-4 and put me on the back foot. An error from lawrence then handed me the match but in reality lawrence played some great tennis and didn't deserve to lose. Well played, and look forward to our next match"  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt Tom Byrne (Mar 17) 1-6, 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Bit of a nightmare start with the wind, rain and then hail we had to take a break at 2-1. First set not ideal conditions but Tom still managed to control his monster forehand, which he was winning points for fun with. Tom held serve comfortably and was just too good. Tom got an early break in the 2nd, and looked in control at 4-2 up, I really didnt feel I was in the match. I held serve and got a few free points and out of nowhere I broke back at 4-4. Happy I was guaranteed a tie break I got the important break to take the set. Tom took the first 2 games in the 3rd and had a point for 3 games up, I held and broke back. At 3-3 i edged a couple of tight games and served it out. Nice to meet you Tom and good luck with your other games!"  -- Richard
Reveal CommentLiam Baldwin bt Laurence Neal (Mar 17) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Played indoors on a fast surface, it was all on serve at 3-2 before Laurence had 2 break points too make it 4-2 luckily I saved them both hanging in the rallies, too win the game making it 3-3 this was a real turning point as I then managed too break too love (0-40) and saw out the set. In the 2nd set I continue my momentum playing consistently turning defence into attack, as Laurence was the aggressor with his big forehand! but unfortunately made too many errors in the end, much closer than the scoreline suggested! "  -- Liam
Reveal CommentMiles Robinson bt Kevin Lomas (Mar 17) 6-4, 7-6 (8-6)

Player Comments:

  • "Really tight and enjoyable game on the indoor green clay at Gosling. It was Kevin's first time on the surface which helped me take a tight first set 6-4. Kevin started the second set fast and took a 3-0 lead, using his reach and angles to play me off the court, but somehow I hung in to fight back to 3-3: from there it was agonisingly tight through to a tie break, with each of us saving match/set points on the way. From 3-3 in the tiebreak I took a 6-3 lead: Kevin fought back to 6-6 but I just about managed to get over the line. Both sets could easily have gone a different way, lots of drop shots, lobs and long rallies. I don't think either of could have managed a third set! Thanks for the game Kevin."  -- Miles
Reveal CommentLaurence Hubbard bt Miles Robinson (Mar 13) 2-6, 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Great battle for my first win on green clay! Miles raced away to a 5-1 lead in the first set but I started to get the momentum back saving 8 set points before losing 2-6 but kept the momentum in the 2nd set. 3rd set went back and forth with Miles going 4-2 up but I somehow got the last few close games under my belt :)"  -- Laurence
Reveal CommentLiam Baldwin bt Laurence Hubbard (Mar 10) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This match was played in awful conditions with 25 mph winds so you can imagine how crazy some points were! None of us played our best tennis but I managed too be more consistent and make less errors in the difficult conditions, taking an early lead in both sets 3-0 and 4-1 before Laurence struck back in both 4-3 4-3 before I managed too get the last 2 games in each set taking them 6-3 6-3, thanks for playing Laurence :)"  -- Liam
Reveal CommentKevin Lomas bt Christopher Perry (Mar 9) 7-5, 0-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Where do i start! The weather made this match very difficult to be played with any real consistency from either of us.Serving was a real problem in high winds and a disadvantage to both of us.I somehow won the first set 7-5 when in reality the set was anyone's due to the conditions. The wind dropped in the 2nd set which really suited Chris and he won 6 in a row to no reply in what seemed like a 15 minute set.In the 3rd set i had to stop the rot and guess what i didn't!Chris was 0-3 up and cruising and it was only a good shot from me that put me on my ass that helped me.I then got to 5-3 up with wind again high and inconsistant.Chris saved 2 match points and won his game and i then served for the match and to my relief won! Until next time!"  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt Miles Robinson (Mar 5) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "It feels like about 10 years that i've been playing Miles without a win and finally I get to write a commentary. The first time playing on the green clay adding a new dimension to our match. Miles hadn't had a game since the last league, and I got my eye in playing a few matches, so true to form Miles raced to a 3-0 lead. I won the next 4 and at 4-4 I got the important break. The second was a close-fought set, with a lot more 'clay court' rallies which included a huge top spin forehand from Miles which bounced and if I was 3 foot taller I may have got my racquet on it. Again at 4-4 both of us had points to win the game and I managed to sneak it. I found some first serves at 5-4 and got that monkey off my back! Always a great battle v Miles."  -- Richard
Reveal CommentLiam Baldwin bt Kevin Lomas (Mar 4) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "In windy conditions today, and at my home courts i raced too a 3-0 lead before Kevin hit some big serves too make it 3-1 I continued too hit consistently and won the next 3 games (6-1) in the 2nd set Kevin was a lot more consistent and nobody could hold serve all breaks of serve up too 4-3 and I was serving 15–40 down it looked like another break but I managed too dig in get that game (5-3) and seal the match with another break! An enjoyable match as always with Kevin best of luck in your other matches :) "  -- Liam
Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt Christopher Perry (Mar 2) 6-0, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Second match in Div 1... but a familiar dancing partner! The first set was a rare one-sided set between us two, I served really well in the first, coming up with big serves when I needed and didn't really miss much. I got a few errors from Chris but one of those where everything went my way. The second started similar to the first and I raced to a 4-1 lead, with a change of racquet for Chris and a nothing to lose attitude he started to control more points and completely turned the set around winning the next 4 to go 5-4 up. With momentum and Chris serving for the set I stopped the run and won the next 3 hard fought games which had long points and many deuces. Those games were anyones and I was glad to get through it. Great fightback Chris!"  -- Richard

Player Comments:

  • Another epic match with Simon with this one going the distance and more. Simon dominated the first set but I managed to take the second set to force a decider. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to complete a third set so we postponed it. When we resumed, conditions were very similar and we were also equally matched. After a couple of early breaks, we held serve throughout and could only be separated by a tiebreak. In the end, I just managed to clinch it on my 5th match point, but every credit to Simon for some great tennis and lots of hard fought rallies throughout all three sets. I look forward to our next match Simon, it will take something special to best this one!

The set itself lasted for the best part of an hour! Stuart managed to nick this at the end. For both the next two sets I raced into 3-0 lead, both times I was pegged back to 3-3 and although I managed to win the last 3 games of each, this really doesn't tell the whole story. Marathon rallies and multiple deuces. Kept me out of mischief on a Sunday afternoon which is always a bonus.
