Revision information
Provide an explanation of the changes you are making. This will help other authors understand your motivations.

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Getting started

New players will need to complete the player questionnaire before they can join a round. Once you’ve signed up, and for returning players you can join any of the upcoming rounds above.

For everything you need to know before you get started see the FAQs and review the Rules and Regulations, which all players agree to adhere to when playing in the leagues.

If there is anything else you need help with get in contact with Nigel, Sally and the team who will be happy to help!

"Want to say a big thanks to both you and Sally for all your help! You're a credit to yourselves and tennis at grassroots level,"

Anthony

"This round was a lot of fun! I was really glad to get to play all my matches and have met some really nice people. What I love about the league is all the contacts you make!"

Calvin Paul

"Am really pleased to have joined the St Albans version of what I used to play at Highbury Fields. Great that Ed is a member at Townsend TC as we got to play on clay. A competitive match with some long rallies. I look forward to playing Ed again sometime,"

Alun Davies

"I think the set-up you run is absolutely fantastic. Met some great people already and enjoyed some wonderful tennis. Tthank you once again for arranging such an enjoyable and competitive round. I may have lost a few more matches this time round, but for me the players you assembled were a good bunch, each talented players in their own way and as a result I enjoyed the challenge that much more - so thank you. Keep up the good work!"

Bjorn Johnson

"Local tennis leagues has been for me the perfect way to get back into competitive tennis. It's been great to meet new people and get in some great games. Looking forward to the next round in February,"

James Douglas

"What a lovely write up. It's nice to get mentioned a few times too, even though I couldn't get a single win. Never mind, it was my first go! This was my first ever time playing competitive tennis and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought everybody was really friendly and there was no tennis snobbery to be seen - something that I had previously been afraid of. I have already played Bish again and managed to get a set off him, so there's hope for me in the next round. You guys deserve continued success with this venture, it really works well. I look forward to the next round as my next task is to sign up for the next league,"

David Taske

Match Results:

Reveal CommentAndrew De Csillery bt James Douglas (Mar 14) 6-1, 3-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable game. All the sets were close with lots of good rallies and winners. James made the most of me failing to close out some service games in the second set but returned the complement to me in the third set. Well played James and good luck with the marathon!"  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt David Mincer (Mar 12) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Much closer match than the scoreline suggests. Really really nice and enjoyable game, with great pace and great rallies with some very powerful shots on both sides. David and I would agree that all that separates us is consistency. Many thanks David for the match this morning."  -- Pavel
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt James Douglas (Mar 12) 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "This was one fantastic match with superb quality tennis and beautiful & powerful winner shots on both sides. Whatever the scoreline, this was one of the best and most enjoyable matches I have ever played in the my 6 rounds in the league. Many thanks James, loved every second of it. I will be very sore tomorrow but it wad definitely worth it :)"  -- Pavel
Reveal CommentJames Douglas bt Sunil Mehra (Mar 10) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Closely fought with many games going to Deuce or 30 and many breaks of serve to boot. Sunil's backhand slice was proving effective, making it hard to generate enough pace to hit outright winners. I squandered 2 match points at 5-3 up in set 2 and then got broken. But I managed to break straight back and secure the victory. Well played Sunil. "  -- James
Reveal CommentSteven Dunn bt Miles Robinson (Mar 7) 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 7-6 (7-1)

Player Comments:

  • "Not the highest standard of tennis but this turned into a 3 hour epic. The first set was extremely close with no more than a game in it, going to a tie break which Miles won easily. The score in the second set doesn't reflect how close this was, with the first 3 games taking well over 30 mins. Again in the third set it was close, but Miles pulled ahead and took a 5-3 lead. I managed to pull it pack to lead 6-5, with the lights about to go out and well past our allotted time it finally went to a 3rd set tie break, which I just edged. It was a battle all the way with neither of us wanting to give away points. Well played Miles."  -- Steven
Reveal CommentAndrew De Csillery bt Steven Dunn (Mar 5) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A rather up and down match, I'm not sure either of us played our best. We both struggled to hold our serve in the first set, but I eventually found some consistency that saw me through the set and well into the second set. Still, there were some nice points, and we certainly had a good work-out. Well played Steve."  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt Steven Dunn (Mar 4) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Very nice match. I took a quick lead in the opener at 4:0, Steve fought back to 4:2 but I held nerve and took the first sten 6:2. Steve stepped up significantly in set 2 and initially coped better with windy weather conditions than I. Critical game at 4:3 when Steve had multiple breakpoints but couldn't quite close. Some really nice rallies especially in set 2. Many thanks Steve, until next round"  -- Pavel
Reveal CommentSunil Mehra v Miles Robinson (Mar 3) 6-2, 5-7, 4-4 TBC

Player Comments:

  • "A very tight match which could have gone either way but unfortunately we ran out of time at the end. The first set I started strongly and went on to take the set from a 3 nil start. The second set Miles was playing the better tennis. I did get the chance to close out at 5-4 up but couldn't and Miles took the set 7-5. The third set was break after break and by the time we got to 4-4 at 10.15 pm the caretaker said ' we're closed now and you have to go home!'. Thanks for the game Miles, next time I think we have to book for 3 hours !"  -- Sunil
Reveal CommentAndrew De Csillery bt Sunil Mehra (Feb 14) 7-5, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Great defensive play from Sunil in the first set. He managed to get back almost everything I threw at him and made me really fight for it. I think he ran out of puff in the second set after all that effort. Well played and thanks for the game. "  -- Andrew

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentAndrew De Csillery bt Pavel Novotny (Feb 12) 6-3, 3-6, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Great match. Flowed one way then the other. Just one break of service separated us in each of the first two sets. In the third I went ahead 4-1, then Pavel recovered back to 4-4, then 5-5. A couple of key points gave me the final break to take the set 7-5. Well played Pavel, particularly given your awkward fall part way through set 2. I know carpet is not your preferred surface so next time on a hard court to even things up!"  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentSteven Dunn bt David Mincer (Feb 9) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Very enjoyable match as always, well played David"  -- Steven
Sunil Mehra bt Steven Dunn (Feb 6) Walkover
Reveal CommentAndrew De Csillery bt David Mincer (Feb 4) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "The match was definitely closer than the score suggested with most of David's service games going to deuce. I edged the important points and was very solid on my serve, which made all the difference, but there were lots of good rallies. Well played David and good luck with your other matches."  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentAndrew De Csillery bt Miles Robinson (Jan 28) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A nice game, with each set starting closely before I pulled away. My serve made the difference, only dropping a couple of points in each set, but Miles pushed me all the way. Well played."  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt Sunil Mehra (Jan 28) 7-5, 2-6, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "What a match Sunil, many thanks, you played great tennis today. Despite the scoreline,it's fair to say that Sunil could have easily won today. The opener - Sunil took a 5:1 lead in no time at all, I collected myself and somehow managed to take the next 6 consecutive games to take the first set 7:5. Second send felt like deja vu, Sunil was once again in 5:1 lead but this time, he did not allow me for a second to turn it around and comfortably took the second set 6:2. First game of the decider was crucial and went on for at least 5 minutes with multiple deuces. I got lucky to take it and it was straightforward from there on, I stepped up and my forehand winner shots came back. Sunil, you and I know you could have won today. Many thanks again."  -- Pavel
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt Miles Robinson (Jan 24) 7-5, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Great match, enjoyed every minute of it. I took a 5:1 lead in the first set but it was hard work as all but 2 games went to deuce. Miles had a great come back and erased my lead rather quickly. I managed to hold my serve at 5:5 to take 6:5 lead and had it not been for 2 Miles's double faults, the set may well have gone into a tie breaker. Second set saw the pace pick up even more and it was close all the way. I just about mamaged to break Miles at 5:4 to win the match. Close match all the way, fantastic pace and great rallies often leaving us both breathless. Many thanks Miles, until next round."  -- Pavel

The only way I managed to win this one, was through sheer grit and determination! Thanks for the game!"-- Aaron
Reveal CommentAaron Paul bt Samantha Calderwood (Feb 25) 6-1, 6-0

  • "Tough match, with good rallies throughout. I knew I had to keep the pressure up on Sam, and I managed to keep my level of play up to a high standard to see me through. Well played! - A "  -- Aaron
Reveal CommentSusan Hoblin bt Samantha Calderwood (Feb 24) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Really close match, I was 4-0 up in the first & 4-1 up in the second & Sam kept coming back! Sam was definitely the most consistent of the two of us, but I think the home advantage of playing on courts I knew well probably played in my favour. Good luck for the rest of your matches Sam!"  -- Susan

Reveal CommentStuart Mackay bt Antony Parselle (Feb 19) 5-7, 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "After yesterday's game against Aaron I thought it wasn't possible to have another epic, marathon game. I was wrong. From the outset both of us were retrieving every ball from impossible positions coupled with long tiring rallies. However Antony's overall game and net play was to strong as he won the first set. The 2nd set was very similar and lots of games went to deuce and lots of energy sapping deuces at that, but I manged to break early and then hold on to take the 2nd set. We were both knackered starting the third but the first game began with an epic 30+ stroke rally which literally left us on our knees. I then raced into a 3-0 lead, but Antony pulled it back and then I broke at a crucial time and just won 6-4. well played Ant!"  -- Stuart

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentStuart Mackay bt Aaron Paul (Feb 18) 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (4-7), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "An absolute marathon of a match! first set went one way and the other, both of us breaking serve regularly. I managed to build a lead early in the tiebreak which I managed to hold onto. The 2nd set continued in the same vain as the first although the performance improved in both of us with some fine rallies. Again it went to a tie break and Aaron this time building a lead which he consolidated. Into the 3rd, and both of us were getting tired. The energy from my Morrisons muesli in the morning was fading fast but I just managed to break late in the set and hold on for a 6-4 win but it could have gone either way. The longest game I've played in this league. Look forward to playing again once I've had a rest!"  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentAntony Parselle bt Aaron Paul (Feb 12) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "We've been playing each other for about 4 years in the league now, and this was probably the best game we've had. Certainly the best i've ever played against Aaron. And I needed to be at my best to win this one. Some great rallies. Lots of winners and hardly any mistakes meant every point had to be won. The first set was close but I edged it. Aaron was 4-2 and 5-3 up in the second with set point. But I managed to fight back with some consistent play to eventually edge it 7-5. Great game Aaron. Looking forward to the next one. Ant"  -- Antony
Reveal CommentAntony Parselle bt Susan Hoblin (Feb 10) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "6-4, 6-3 is really flattering. As it should probably have been the other way round. If it was a boxing match I would have lost on points. Susan's groundstrokes had me pinned to the back wall for most of the match and it was my retrieval ability that got me through. Every point was hard won. It was gruelling, but fun. A really good match with some great points that had us both running ourselves into the ground. Looking forward to the next match. After i've had a few weeks off to recover!! Well played Susan and good luck in the other group matches."  -- Antony

I managed to get a good lead in both sets, after some closely fought games went my way, only for Lucy to peg me back both times. I had to really fight to get over the finish line in both sets with some nervy tennis. Great game Lucy"  -- Charles
Reveal CommentCharles Whitehead bt Richard Washbrook (Feb 26) 6-3, 2-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

A lot of close games in the next two sets, but I found a bit of consistency. Happy to get my first points on the board in the St Albans league, a great standard really enjoying it!"  -- Richard

Reveal CommentPhil Chin bt Charles Whitehead (Feb 15) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A close fought match with momentum switching frequently - a fast start to lead the first set 5-0 was soon reduced to 5-3 before I managed to close the set out. The second set started tentatively with a lot of long rallies and some questionable net play from my side before a decisive break allowed a 5-2 lead but was unable to close at the first attempt and a break was require to take the win. Player Comments:

  • "This was a match that turned into an absolute beast of a tie! Although only 2 sets, they were 2 tiebreaks and we even played on 2 different surfaces (started outdoors and moved indoors because of the wind). There were too many breaks and counter-breaks of serve to recall and momentum changed all too frequently. Another good match Ashley - thanks for the game. "  -- Jonathan

Reveal CommentDave Martell bt Tim Kidd (Jan 21) 7-6 (7-4), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Despite carrying a shoulder injury throughout, Tim led 5:3 in the 1st set and 4:3 in the 2nd (from 0:3) ; this could easily have gone either way. First time at this venue and what a find: dead easy to reach off the M1, two cracking heated indoor courts and very reasonably priced - can I tempt any of my other opponents out there? Thanks for the match Tim."  -- Dave

Group Summary:

It doesn't come much closer than this! Richard and Anna are tied at the top with ten points apiece and four wins, and with no head to head to separate the two a trip to the rule book is in order. Thanks to four straight set wins it is Richard who takes the title due to fewer number of sets conceded - congratulations Richard and commiserations Anna! Ed, Matt, Sarah and Lucy may not have reached the heights set by Richard and Anna but they most certainly led the way with commitment playing all of their matches in the group. Good stuff!

Reveal CommentEd Blake bt Sarah Webster (Mar 11) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A close and enjoyable match, played in a very warm bubble on artificial grass at Harpenden LTC. The first set was a bit up and down for both of us with several breaks of serve; my serve was inconsistent with a few double faults, and Sarah suffered from a few unforced errors. The second set was much more consistent for both of us, with a few great long rallies and some impressive winners from Sarah. There was just one break of serve in the second set, and I only just managed to serve it out at 5-4 with a very long deuce game. Sarah it was nice to meet you and thanks for a great match."  -- Ed

Reveal CommentEd Blake bt Matt Ralph (Mar 4) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Another very close match, as it always seems to be when Matt and I play. We started indoors on artificial grass in one of the bubbles at Harpenden LTC, in what felt like very warm and humid conditions. The first set was very close with lots of deuce games but I managed to break at 4-4 then serve it out. At that point we only had 5 minutes left in the bubble, so moved outside onto artificial clay and much cooler and blustery conditions. I took an early lead to get to 5-1, then my serve dipped a bit and Matt took full advantage to get back to 5-4, before I finally managed to serve it out. Matt returned extremely well today and hit some great winners. Thanks Matt for a great match, looking forward to the next one!"  -- Ed

Player Comments:

  • "It's always a good match against Ed. I won the first set fairly easily but then Ed roared back in the second, to take a 5-2 lead...I was fortunate to be able to make my own fight back to take the set 7-5...if we'd have gone into a third set, I'm not sure the result would have been the same. Thanks Ed, until next time."  -- Richard
