Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

"Local tennis leagues has been for me the perfect way to get back into competitive tennis. It's been great to meet new people and get in some great games. Looking forward to the next round in February,"

James Douglas

"This round was a lot of fun! I was really glad to get to play all my matches and have met some really nice people. What I love about the league is all the contacts you make!"

Calvin Paul

"What a lovely write up. It's nice to get mentioned a few times too, even though I couldn't get a single win. Never mind, it was my first go! This was my first ever time playing competitive tennis and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought everybody was really friendly and there was no tennis snobbery to be seen - something that I had previously been afraid of. I have already played Bish again and managed to get a set off him, so there's hope for me in the next round. You guys deserve continued success with this venture, it really works well. I look forward to the next round as my next task is to sign up for the next league,"

David Taske

"Am really pleased to have joined the St Albans version of what I used to play at Highbury Fields. Great that Ed is a member at Townsend TC as we got to play on clay. A competitive match with some long rallies. I look forward to playing Ed again sometime,"

Alun Davies

"It was great to get so many matches in this time and all were evenly matched and competitive games,"

Paul Cunningham

"Its been a great contest and I will certainly been playing again in the new year"

Michael Sanders

Collapse AllSt Albans & Harpenden Singles - Round 43 | Thursday 16 January 2020 to Wednesday 11 March 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 12 February 2020)

A fantastic round in St Albans and Harpenden with high quality tennis, a generous approach to matches and excellent scheduling. A few injury-related withdrawals brought down the stats (67% of all possible matches were played) but overall, this a really great round. Well done all!

Group Summary:

Pavel was very quick out of the blocks and raced to a 10 point lead with 4 wins out of 4 and his bonus points in the bag. Congratulations! He was full of compliments for his opponents and said Andrew hit more winners than he did, the main difference being the unforced error count (ah! Who has not lamented those!). Kevin B was runner up in a very competitive group in which every match came with a commentary about a 'really enjoyable' match, a 'gruelling battle' in which no one would give an inch and an excellent match played at a high level. Great stuff and well done all!

Final Rankings:

  1. Pavel Novotny 7.1 [W4] 10 includes 2 bonus points WINNER
  2. Kevin Bocker 7.2 [W3, L1] 6 RUNNER UP
  3. Andy Shanks 8.1 [W1, L1] 3
  4. Kevin Lomas 9.1 [W1, L1] 2
  5. Laurence Hubbard 7.1 [W1, L2] 2
  6. Andrew De Csillery 7.2 [L5]
  7. Liam Baldwin 6.1 withdrawn

Player Comments:

  • "It was great to play Andy for the first time. It was a gruelling battle where neither Andy or I would give an inch. I managed to get off to a good start and raced into an early lead. Andy was hitting some lovely winners and made every game competitive. However, I converted the key points and took the first set 6-1. Andy stepped it up in the second set and started to dictate our rallies. I tried hard to reverse the tide, but fatigue began to play its part and Andy secured the set 6-3 with some impressive winners. I feared the worse, however, I dug deep and broke Andy to go 2-0 ahead. The most competitive game of the match followed but after a titanic battle I won the game and went on to win the set 6-1. Thanks Andy for a great match!"  -- Kevin

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentKevin Bocker bt Andrew De Csillery (Mar 7) 6-1, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable early morning match with Andrew. The first set was competitive with a number of long rallies. On paper a 6-1 set looks one-sided, however it was far from that. I was just fortunate to win the key points at the right time. The second set was a really enjoyable tussle. I started the set well and took an early lead, but Andrew was quick to respond. He hit some great winners and clawed back to lead 6-5 before I dug deep and managed to take the match to a tie break. The tie break reflected the rest of the match - very competitive! I got an early lead but Andrew once again responded and levelled at 3-3 before I was fortunate to win 4 of the next 5 points to take the match. Thank you Andrew for a great game! "  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentKevin Lomas bt Andrew De Csillery (Mar 4) 7-6 (7-4), 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Really good to play Andrew again and had some great battles in the past. Once again i fluked this one as Andrew lead well in attack but my annoying slice forced him into some errors. My serve was shocking today so i can only apologise for that Andrew. The first set i lead 3-0 only for Andrew to find his rhythm and and we played out a tie break which i got lucky to win at 7-4. The second set Andrew steamed into a deserved 1-4 lead then a 2-5 lead and i saved 5 set points on Andrews serve somehow. I then game back with a few good games and managed to see the set out 7-5 and the match. Well played Andrew and i hope to give you a harder hitting game next time if i can kick my annoying habits! "  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentKevin Bocker bt Laurence Hubbard (Feb 29) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "| started the match well and raced into a 3-0 lead before Laurence began to get a foothold into the match. Laurence attacked any short ball and hit multiple backhand winners which I found hard to read. The first set was competitive throughout but after some great rallies I was able to break Laurence's serve and win the set 6-2,. The second set was much tighter. Laurence hit some impressive back-hand winners to keep the match very tight. Both of us were struggling with our serve and most games were won against serve. However a crucial service hold for me to go 5-4 ahead proved to be decisive as I broke Laurence in the final game to win the match. I really enjoyed the game and wish Laurence all the best in his future matches."  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentAndy Shanks bt Andrew De Csillery (Feb 22) 6-3, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "Excellent match with both Andrew and I playing at a high level. Andrew came out firing in the second set and it could have easily gone either way with lots of breaks of serve. Very enjoyable, well played Andrew."  -- Andy
Reveal CommentLaurence Hubbard bt Andrew De Csillery (Feb 20) 6-2, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "Crisp hitting from both at various points. I managed to get some momentum after several long grinding games to start the first set. Andrew served for the 2nd set twice but I managed to keep the scoreline close and clinch the tie break. Until next time!"  -- Laurence
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt Andrew De Csillery (Feb 15) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "We all know what a great player Andrew is and the scoreline makes no sense. I thoroughly enjoyed the match, great, honest, quality tennis, as always. I think Andrew hit more winners than I, the only thing that let Andrew down today was too many unforced errors. I am sure it will be a lot tighter next time. Thanks Andrew and best of luck in your next matches. "  -- Pavel
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt Laurence Hubbard (Feb 5) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Always a good game with Laurence. First not indicative of the score at all, it was much tighter, with most games going to deuce and Laurence hitting some awesome winners, which often reduced me to being a ball boy. In the second set, Laurence continued to win some great winners, but unforced errors kept creeping in. Had it not been for those, it would have been a much tighter score. Thanks Laurence. Great match!"  -- Pavel
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt Kevin Bocker (Feb 4) 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Wow. What an epic match lasting well over 2 hours with nearly every single game going to deuce. Kevin raced into a 3:0 and 4:1 in the opener and then broke the string on his racket, having to play with a different make, which might have contributed to my turnaround to 5:4 and ultimately taking the set 7:5. Second set was no different in terms of intensity, every single game going to deuce, I just found myself on the lucky side of taking most of them. Great, honest, quality tennis. We were both knackered. And not to mention, that Kevin is a really really nice guy and we had lovely chat throughout the match. Thanks Kevin. Until next time"  -- Pavel
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt Kevin Lomas (Jan 23) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Great playing Kevin after a long time, always a good match. Score not at all indicative of how competitive the match was. Great shots and fast pace, loved it. I think I was a bit lucky that Kevin hadn't been playing before our match else could have easily been a 3-setter and who knows who would have taken it. Thanks Kevin. Pleasure as always"  -- Pavel

Group Summary:

So many good matches here, it's hard to choose between them. The 'really tough match' between Phil and James with 'lots of big forehand rallies'; the 'usual three setter' between Miles and Dave, 'played (as ever) in an excellent spirit'; or the battle between Phil and Christopher in which Christopher played 'with ridiculous consistency' and Phil was playing 'with legs pretty much gone'! What a group! At the final count Phil finished just one point ahead of Christopher. Congrats to them, very well played all and hope Richard's injury is on the mend.

Final Rankings:

Match Results:

Reveal CommentPhil Chin bt Christopher Perry (Mar 8) 6-1, 5-7, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Definitely got away with this one, a match which went well past the 2 hour mark. Playing in the bubble in great conditions, I made a fast start as I got the better of the many aggressive forehand rallies, dictating the play and taking a comfortable 1st set. However, 2nd set onwards was very different with break after break and Chris altering his style and playing with ridiculous consistency. I barely scraped my own service games and served for the match but the relentless consistency from Chris forced errors and he pushed on to force a decider. With legs pretty much gone and battling hard to stay with Chris, we were forced outside at 3-3 into the wind. I managed to adapt and took the next 3 games for the match, ending in torrential rain!"  -- Phil
Brandon Baldwin bt Dave Martell (Mar 3) 6-3, 6-1
Reveal CommentChristopher Perry bt James Duncan (Mar 2) 6-0, 7-6 (7-3)

Player Comments:

  • "I came out on the right side of the first set rallies. Second set was good tennis from both sides with James really coming back strongly saving a few match points at 2-5 to end up with some set points at 6-5. Fortunately I took it to a tie break which fell in my favour but really could have gone either way."  -- Christopher
Reveal CommentMiles Robinson bt Dave Martell (Feb 17) 2-6, 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Thankfully we were able to avoid the weather with an indoor court at Gosling for the usual three setter between me and Dave. The first set started tightly but then Dave ran away with it - his dangerous forehand and serving were in good working order and I couldn't find a way to deal with them. The second set was really the key: at 3-3 and then 4-3 to me it could easily have gone Dave's way, but I hung in there and found a way to level the match. The third set started in the same vein, going to 2-2 before fatigue kicked in and I took a 5-2 lead. Even then Dave threatened to come back, but I was able to stay ahead for a hard fought win, played (as ever) in an excellent spirit."  -- Miles
Reveal CommentPhil Chin bt James Duncan (Feb 12) 6-3, 4-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A really tough match against James, first set went with serve until the momentum shifted my way, managing to take a break at 4-2 and hold to take the set. Momentum shift the other way as James raced into a 3-0 second set lead and had break points for 4-0, which I managed to save, eventually managing to break back and had break points to lead 5-4. James subsequently saved these and broke to take the set 6-4. By this point the fatigue and unforced error count was rising and I managed to maintain consistency to outlast and come through the final set 6-1. Very competitive match, lots of big forehand rallies, glad to come through it!"  -- Phil
Brandon Baldwin bt James Duncan (Feb 11) 6-2, 7-5
Reveal CommentMiles Robinson bt Christopher Perry (Feb 8) 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "Chris and I played our usual exhausting three setter at Harpenden. From 2-2 in the first set, Chris stepped up his level and deservedly took the first set 6-2. I was able to edge ahead in the second set and close it out 6-4 despite Chris threatening to come back. The third set was nip and tuck all the way: I was slightly ahead for most of it but couldn't close out from 5-4 and 6-5, so we headed into a tie break. I took an early lead at 4-1 and looked to be running away with it, then Chris came back to 5-4. I just about held my nerve to close out 7-5! Another great game, full of long rallies (some more mid court than was ideal!) and plenty of winners from each side."  -- Miles
Brandon Baldwin bt Christopher Perry (Feb 7) 6-2, 6-2
Reveal CommentJames Duncan bt Dave Martell (Feb 4) 7-6 (7-5), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "One helluva 1st set! Cheers James."  -- Dave
Reveal CommentPhil Chin bt Miles Robinson (Feb 2) 6-3, 3-6, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "This was a really tricky match played in very testing windy conditions, the wind played havoc with service games and judging shot length. Breaks aplenty and I just about managed to raise my level to take control of the 1st set before the momentum shifted in the 2nd and I was unable to claw back the break, Miles winning a seemingly never ending service game of a thousand deuces (!) to take the set. That lengthy game seemed to shift the momentum back in my favour and I was able to control the final set to take the match. A hard match and one I'm glad to get through! "  -- Phil
Reveal CommentPhil Chin bt Richard Washbrook (Jan 26) 6-4, 1-0 Richard Washbrook Retired

Player Comments:

  • "We've had several matches over the last few years, generally hard fought, competitive, brutal matches. Sadly on this occasion injury cut short this match, Richie suffering a shoulder/back injury. It was a tight first set with several breaks which I managed to come through as the injury impacted Richie's big serve. Real shame and hopefully the injury heals soon!"  -- Phil
Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt Christopher Perry (Jan 25) 6-2, 4-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Cracking match with Chris and one I was fortunate to get the W. I got ahead in the first and closed it out. The second was a bit up and down with Chris getting a good lead, I came back at 4-4 when Chris really upped his game. The next 2 games was full of long gruelling points, I was pretty much staying in the points and Chris was the aggressor and literally ran me off my feet. Some top tennis to win the set. Third set was a mix of hard hitting rallies and points neither wanted to lose again we ended up at 4-4. I was 0-30 down on my serve and held which I got out away with as I was playing some tight stuff and Chris was unlucky with a few shots. Nice to play Chris again he played really well and probably the better player today."  -- Richard

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentPhil Chin bt Dave Martell (Jan 23) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Great, competitive match played in a good spirit in tricky conditions. Always a testing match against Dave and this was no different. Managed to overturn a 3-5 deficit to take the 1st set and find a run of games in the 2nd to take the match. Lots of testing cross court forehands from Dave caused problems! Till next match!"  -- Phil
Reveal CommentChristopher Perry bt Dave Martell (Jan 21) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Always a great game. I was on particularly good form today but this said it was still a close match with some very long rallies and good running on both sides of the net. Dave was hitting some big winners in our third friendly set which could have tipped the match the other way if they'd come sooner."  -- Christopher
Reveal CommentChristopher Perry bt Gustavo Farina (Jan 19) 2-6, 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "As always a great game with Gustavo. A typical group 2 battle of momentum shifts!"  -- Christopher

Tie break was topsy turvy, I managed to hang on to take it 8 6. Clearly the key, had Gytis taken this set the scoreline may well have flipped on its head! Thanks for hosting Gytis, really enjoyable match, until next time................"  -- David

Reveal CommentGytis Lenkauskas bt Jeff Robinson (Feb 3) 6-0, 7-6 (7-3)

Player Comments:

  • "Despite the whitewash first set, this was a very hard fought match. The first four games of the match all went to deuce multiple times, with Gytis prevailing to record a whitewash first set. From the off in the second set, and serving first, I managed a couple of aces, and served well for the rest of the match. There were breaks of serve both ways, and we continued to have a great many deuce situations. In one game alone we estimated we returned to deuce perhaps 10 times (although we both lost count). Ultimately a far closer second set was concluded with a tiebreak, won by Gytis. Thanks for a great match Gytis, it was a pleasure to be involved in it. Good luck with future matches. Reveal CommentDavid Mincer bt Jeff Robinson (Jan 21) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Nowhere near as one-sided as score line suggests! Jeff has only recently started playing Tennis again after 7 years out. Has all the shots but unsurprisingly lacks a bit of consistency. Being incredibly hard on himself after the game but I'm absolutely convinced that if you stick at it Jeff, and we play again in 12 months time, it would be a different match altogether. Best of luck for the rest of the round and thanks for hosting!"  -- David

Player Comments:

  • "Always a pleasure to play Louisa. On a beautiful, sunny (but very very cold) morning in Harpenden! The sun caused both of us huge problems at one end, I managed to nick one game at that end in the 1st set and this proved to be the difference. Definitely feel like the score line flattered me today, we are quite evenly matched as past encounters have shown. But as previously said, always a pleasure to play Louisa, I look forward to the next meeting! Best of luck with your remaining games Louisa!"  -- David

Group Summary:

All but one possible match played in this brilliantly committed group and everyone got their bonus points! Well done and please take a bow! The tennis was just as good as the scheduling with a 'good competitive game' between Jonathan and Angela, a 'really enjoyable match with some great rallies' between Ashley and Angela, a 'very tough match' between Ashley and Jonathan, 'high quality rallies' between Ashley and Matt, and a close competitive match between Jonathan and David. When the finally tally of points was made, Leslie topped the group with 5 wins but he had to raise his game against Ashley (who was runner up), overcome a wobble against Jonathan, find his first serves to overcome Angela and learn to read David's game! Congratulations and well played all!

Reveal CommentLeslie Okomi bt David Tasker (Feb 10) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "The scores in the first set does not reflect the level of play, I got an early break but David broke back. There were a lot of deuces and I won most of the vital points. I served out the first serve. The second set started with me getting an early break by which time I was reading David's serve and game quickly. Thanks for a good game and also booking the court. "  -- Leslie
Reveal CommentAngela Anastasiou bt Matt Ralph (Feb 8) 6-3, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable match that was very close. Matt and I were neck and neck through out the match, each breaking each others serves a few times in the first set until I was able to pull ahead. The second set was even closer and went to 6-6 so we played a tie break to decide the set I really did not want a third set! and by luck more than skill I just pipped Matt at 7-5 in the tie break. Thanks for the game Matt and good luck in the rest of your games"  -- Angela
Reveal CommentAshley Guinn bt Jonathan Sandars (Feb 8) 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "It was a very tough match, which went on over two days. Jonathan's game is so tricky, he had me running all over the court, up and down, side to side etc. As we are both quite fast, there were a lot of long rallies with a different variety of shots. The first two sets were very competitive. The third set was also neck and neck with a lot of long deuce games, then at 3-3, I don't really know what happened. It could have gone either way really. Thanks for the game Jonathan. :)"  -- Ashley
Reveal CommentLeslie Okomi bt Angela Anastasiou (Feb 5) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "I had a good start breaking Angela in the first game and held a 3-0 lead then she broke back. There were a lot of deuce games and I won most of the vital points. I took the first set and the second was in a similar way we both had a break of serve each at the start till i got settled and was finding more of my first serves. Great credit to Angela as she managed to return some of my serves. Really enjoyable game look forward to playing against you in the future. All the best with the rest of your matches. "  -- Leslie
Reveal CommentAshley Guinn bt Matt Ralph (Feb 2) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "It was a fun, energetic match, played at Harpenden tennis club. A lot of high quality rallies, and a lot of games went to deuce. Matt got off to a good start, taking a 2-0. I think from there, it was a case of me winning the important points. I was also quite aggressive on return today, which won me a lot of free points. Thanks for the game Matt!"  -- Ashley
Reveal CommentAshley Guinn bt David Tasker (Jan 29) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "It was nice to play David. We got kicked out from the bubble and ended up playing on clay instead, but still really nice courts. I managed to get into quite a rhythm in the first set. I feel like in the second set, David played a bit more freely, and I tightened up a bit, thinking about potentially losing another match in three sets after winning the first set. But I managed to avoid that. David mentioned it was like playing a wall. I guess it can be helpful to have long arms. >.< Thanks for the game David! "  -- Ashley
Reveal CommentLeslie Okomi bt Jonathan Sandars (Jan 29) 4-6, 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A lot of rallies in the first set and duece games. I had a wobble while serving to stay in the set and Jonathan took the first set. Second set was in a similar fashion break of serve each the i managed to break and win the second. Final shoot out set was tight as there were a lot of duece games and rallies till i managed to get a double break but Jonathan got one break back and i held serve to win this match. Thanks for an enjoyable match it was played in good spirit and I hope we get the chance to play again and good luck with the rest of your matches. "  -- Leslie

Player Comments:

  • "A really good intro to the new round with a close, competitive match against David. the first set was closer than the score suggests, and then the second was very tightly fought. David pulled out some terrific serves, and got nearly everything back over the net, but i managed to get the extra few points for the win. Thanks for the game David - good luck for the rest of the round."  -- Jonathan
Reveal CommentDavid Tasker bt Angela Anastasiou (Jan 27) 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "This game, played at two venues, lasted 2 hours and 40 minutes. It was the longest three-setter either of us had ever played. The first set lasted 1hr 25 minutes. It really was a war of attrition at times. Lengthy rallies punctuated by some great winners by Angela. We had to stop after the first two sets and I suspect Angela would have won had we continued. The change of venue really favoured me as it allowed me to regroup and regain my composure. Great fun!"  -- David
Reveal CommentLeslie Okomi bt Ashley Guinn (Jan 19) 1-6, 6-4, 6-0

  • "Having played Ashley a couple of times I knew I had to be patient and minimise my unforced errors. Ashley had a better start and took the first set, the second set was close as there were a couple of break of serve then I managed to serve it out. The third set was intense as we both raised our games at which point I was making less errors. Thanks Ashley for a good match, was enjoyable. "  -- Leslie

The game was played in good spirit and at a fast pace. Thanks for a great match Richie. "  -- Simon
