This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Collapse AllSt Albans & Harpenden Singles - Round 31 | Thursday 15 June 2017 to Wednesday 9 August 2017 (Midpoint: Wednesday 12 July 2017)

Thanks to everyone who made it onto court in this summer round. A few no shows reduced the overall percentage of matches played slightly but for those who got involved there was some good competitive games and performances. Congratulations to the new group champions and we hope to see you all to do it again next time.

Group Summary:

Pavel was determined not to relinquish his group one crown, producing an unbeaten display of tennis in his five matches and scheduling well to cross the line in first once again. Peter also finished the round undefeated, so what might have happened had we seen a top of the table clash between the two? Maybe we will find out next time.

  • "Shame we ran out of time. Until next round Daniel."  -- James
Reveal CommentPeter Shearman bt James Douglas (Aug 3) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A close match in windy conditions. The difference I think was on the serve, managed to hold mine for the duration of the match without serving a double fault. James hit some stunning shots though and that made for a really enjoyable match! Cheers mate "  -- Peter
Reveal CommentPeter Shearman bt Nick Evans (Jul 17) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Great match, Nick played very well at the net, even vollying my return of serve for winners. The key difference was perhaps a bit more consistency and controlled aggression on my end. "  -- Peter
Pavel Novotny bt Tom Byrne (Jul 11) Walkover
Reveal CommentPeter Shearman bt Daniel Gonzalez Garza (Jul 10) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Closer than the scoreline suggests, Dan has all the shots in the book, rallied fairly consistently but wasn't able to convert the big points into games. Only a few points going the other way would have made a huge difference."  -- Peter
Reveal CommentJames Douglas bt Nick Evans (Jul 9) 7-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable match. I managed to hold serve from 0-30 down and 4-5 down in Set 1 before breaking Nick's serve. I was 2 points away from the set ay 6-5 up before Nick then broke me. I was a little more consistent in the tie-break to take the opener. Set 2 was more straightforward as I raced to a 5-1 lead before Nick managed to break serve. I then returned the favour to close out the match. Played in the right spirit and some really good points. Thanks Nick. "  -- James

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentSunil Mehra bt James Douglas (Jul 3) 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable match played on a beautiful evening. The first set took about an hour, nip and tuck throughout and I just edged it in a tiebreak. The second I was up a break but couldn't hold on with James winning three games in a row to close it out. The third I composed myself to just keep going to the end. I am so happy that I managed to not collapse in the third, as I usually do when I run out of petrol, and to finally beat James after being on the losing end in I think three previous matches. A couple of unreal backhand gets from James that I couldn't quite believe somewhere in there as well. Thanks James, great tennis. "  -- Sunil
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt Daniel Gonzalez Garza (Jul 3) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Lovely match and hats off to Daniel being a self taught player and playing tennis only for the past 6 years. The opener : Daniel broke my serve in the very first game and I thought I was in trouble but I collected myself and took the next 6 consecutive games to close at 6:1. Similar start of set 2, Daniel took a 1:0 lead, I then took the next 3 games to take a 3:1 lead. Daniel came back to equalize at 3:3 but then quite a few double faults in 2 of his serve games meant I closed ar 6:3. Keep going Daniel, until next time."  -- Pavel
Reveal CommentPeter Shearman bt Sunil Mehra (Jul 2) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A tricky match on Euro clay courts, had to adjust to Sunil's game which featured a lot of consistent slice shots and good placement against my standard topspin shots. Well played mate!"  -- Peter
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt Nick Evans (Jun 27) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A great match a lot closer than the scoreline suggests. The opener - Nick took off to a flying start with a quick 2:0 lead, I somehow collected myself and equalized to 2:2, then a crucial game where Nick had 5 breakpoints but I managed to take it in the end. Nick held back back a little since until 0:3 down in second set when some great serves started coming in. I held nerve though and hit some great winners. Lovely match and a great debut for Nick in Group 1 - a warm welcome and keep going, I am sure you will be knocking on the door of the top of group 1 establishment soon :). Many thanks again."  -- Pavel
Sunil Mehra bt Daniel Gonzalez Garza (Jun 26) 6-1, 6-4
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt James Douglas (Jun 26) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Another great and very enjoyable match, just honest and powerful tennis. As I said in the last round it is for matches like these that I play the league. I am sure that the day will come when James won't serve as many double faults and will be on the winning side and I won't mind :) thank you James, quality as always. Until next round."  -- Pavel
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt Sunil Mehra (Jun 23) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Played at Batchwood outdoors under windy conditions, Sunil struggled with the surface and the wind - sincere apologies. We will play indoors next time. Scoreline doesn't make any sense as I know what Sunil is capable of - our last encounter went into a 3rd side and I just about won. It is great to see Sunil back in the league and I am sure he will do well as he recovers from past injuries and gets more practice! Thank you Sunil"  -- Pavel

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable match played in a great spirit with some good rallies. After swapping breaks of serve at the beginning of the first set I managed to hold on to my serve more consistently to close out the set 6-2, with a similar story in the second set. On another day the scores could easily have been reversed - look forward to the rematch!"  -- Miles
Reveal CommentPhil Chin bt Stuart Mackay (Jul 30) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Another tough match of 2 sets, 1 played outdoors and 1 indoors. The first set was played in sunny but blustery conditions and I was able to get used to the conditions quicker, and found the rhythm on forehand and serve, running into a 4-0 lead. We swapped breaks and I was able to serve out for 6-2. As we finished, the rain rolled in and we moved indoors. I was slow to start the set and Stuart stepped up to break early and lead 3-0. He had break points for a 4-0 lead but I managed to find big serves to save the break. This gave me momentum and I turned it around to lead 4-3. We each broke before I served it out. By the end legs seemed to go for us and it was a case of lasting the rallies. A close match, my serve rescuing me in key moments."  -- Phil
Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt Nigel Stevens (Jul 24) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Some nice tennis going on the all-weather, clay and hard courts, unfortunately not for us we picked the worst night at my club and all the courts were full with league matches. We managed to get on 'The Bird Cage', an ageing court full of moss and some super weird bounces that nobody wants to play on. It was quite hard to get the rhythm going which worked in my favour in the first set. I took a 4-1 lead in the second when we finally got on a decent court, Nigel was able to put together more winners and looked like fighting back. I was very happy to close out the match as Nige upped his game. Sorry Nigel for the busy night and poor court (and multiple net cords in my favour)!"  -- Richard
Reveal CommentPhil Chin bt Wendy Histon (Jul 23) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A very competitive and enjoyable match with lots of variety in gameplay. Both sets started with close holds before I managed to get the key breaks to win each set. Wendy came to the net a lot which caused me a lot of problems and my passing shots had to be very accurate. Best of luck in your remaining games!"  -- Phil
Reveal CommentDavid Mincer bt Nigel Stevens (Jul 17) 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, [10-4]

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable match, very competitive. Nigel looked in control of the 1st set at 4-2 but I managed to just about stay in touch and somehow nick it on a tie break. Nigel came out really aggressively in the 2nd set and simply blew me away 6-1. Cruel really that we ran out of time so decided to play a Tie Break. The momentum was with Nigel and had we played a full set I'm sure he was favourite. But I got a flyer in the tie break and held on to win 10-4. Thoroughly enjoyed it Nigel, until next time :)"  -- David
Reveal CommentStuart Mackay bt David Mincer (Jul 16) 5-7, 6-0, [12-10]

Player Comments:

  • "Another fun competitive game between David and I, the first set was very long and gruelling and i just managed to hold in there as David was threatening to run away with it, but his better overall game just clinched the set. The 2nd was unusually straightforward as the marathon 1st set took its toll on David. We didn't have much time left so we played a match tiebreak for the 3rd which David raced into a big lead at 4-0, then 7-2. However again I just managed to hold in there and slowly reduced the lead until i finally ran out 12-10. Always great fun playing David, look forward to it again!"  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentStuart Mackay bt Miles Robinson (Jul 11) 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "The first set was extremely tight, both of us serving well and holding service games even though both of us had break points. Miles broke first in the 9th game but then I immediately broke back and went on to win the set although it literally could have gone either way. The 2nd set started in the same vein with both of us holding service games. I then broke in the 6th game although in all fairness Miles was distracted by the staff locking up the door beside the court and making a hell of a racket, I then went on to close out 6-2. A very close match which I just managed to hold on and win the crucial points - well played Miles, look forward to playing again soon."  -- Stuart

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentMiles Robinson bt Richard Washbrook (Jul 8) 6-4, 5-7, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Tight game on a boiling hot afternoon at Gosling. I edged the first set and took a 5-3 lead in the second, then Richie stepped up his level to take the next four games and force a third set. As both of us tired in the heat I was able to pull away from 3-3 to take the match. Luckily for me Richie's excellent first serve was a little inconsistent, as the result could easily have been reversed on another day! Thanks for the game Richie and look forward to next time."  -- Miles

Reveal CommentPhil Chin bt David Mincer (Jul 2) 6-4, 4-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "This was a really long hard fought match in sunny but breezy conditions. The first 2 sets could have gone either way with breaks traded and not much in it. The first set was on serve until David broke for a 4-3 lead but I managed to grind a break back and the next 2 games to sneak the set 6-4. David led the second set with an early break thanks to some lovely backhand winners before unfortunately tweaking his shoulder which allowed me back in at 4-4. He then managed to break to take the set 6-4. 2 hours gone, and fatigue kicking in, I managed to up the intensity at the start of the 3rd set to race to 4-0 before enventually closing out 6-1. A match that could easily have a straight sets defeat, a really enjoyable and tough match!"  -- Phil
Reveal CommentPhil Chin bt Charles Whitehead (Jun 24) 7-6 (7-5), 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "The first set was extremely close (almost identical to our last match!) with some tense, tentative play and swaps of breaks before a tie break that went back and forth before I managed to nick it. The second set went my way from the start as I managed to open up my forehand a bit more and dictate the points, taking the momentum to win the set quickly. Always a pleasure - best of luck with the rest of your matches."  -- Phil
Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt David Mincer (Jun 23) 6-4, 4-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A gruelling match with Dave every point was hard fought by both. Some great serving in the first set, Dave had a few early break points but couldnt take advantage, I finally got a break point later in the set, and managed to win the first with only the one break in the whole of the set. I took and early break in the second and was holding well, Dave dug in at 4-3 down and dominating the later games turning it around to take the second. The decider was a totally different game, with tiredness creeping in it became a case of who could hold on to their serve had a good chance of winning! I managed to sneak ahead and just take it. A great match, both of us had chances to win it. Well played David!"  -- Richard
Reveal CommentMiles Robinson bt David Mincer (Jun 20) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "We were both a bit rusty and this contributed to a high error count in a close first set which could have gone either way. We were level at 4-4 but I managed to edge the set (on my 5th set point, I think). I took a 3-0 lead in the second set as my serve started to work better, and David couldn't pull it back despite some good winners from him in the scond half of the set. Enjoyable match, hopefully we will both be less rusty when we play next! Thanks for the game David, and good to meet you."  -- Miles
Reveal CommentPhil Chin bt Richard Washbrook (Jun 17) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Another close match on a glorious sunny morning for tennis. Service holds were at a premium with a start of five consecutive breaks and only a couple of holds overall in the first set as I let a 5-2 lead slip before sneaking it 7-5. The second set swung back and forth as I let a 3-1 advantage slip before closing out the match. Always a pleasure - best of luck Richie in the rest of your games."  -- Phil

The second set turned the other way as my serve started working better and Sophie started hitting a few more unforced errors. Things evened up in the third set which was very close throughout, and it was looking like it would go to a tiebreak until I managed to break at 5-5 and then serve it out. Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentAshley Guinn bt Dave Martell (Jun 26) 4-6, 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "It was a very topsy turvy match, with momentum switching often. Dave's cross court forehand is deadly and he has a big serve. I just tried to be consistent on return and just keep the ball in play. I got lucky towards the end as Dave's unforced errors increased but I also varied my own play/tactics more. Overall, it was a really tough match and I had to fight hard for the win. Many thanks Dave!"  -- Ashley

Group Summary:

Christopher was the only player to bag his bonus points and he combined this with some hard fought play to secure three victories and put himself in contention for the prize. Matt also challenged for the lead with a win in each of his four matches. Ultimately it all came down to the two's head to head, and although Matt impressively came back from a set down to win, Christopher's fast start earned him the point he required to climb into first place.
