Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

New players will need to complete the player questionnaire before they can join a round. Once you’ve signed up, and for returning players you can join any of the upcoming rounds above.

"Thanks for the fun I’ve had over the past couple of years,"

Paul Cunningham

"What a lovely write up. It's nice to get mentioned a few times too, even though I couldn't get a single win. Never mind, it was my first go! This was my first ever time playing competitive tennis and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought everybody was really friendly and there was no tennis snobbery to be seen - something that I had previously been afraid of. I have already played Bish again and managed to get a set off him, so there's hope for me in the next round. You guys deserve continued success with this venture, it really works well. I look forward to the next round as my next task is to sign up for the next league,"

David Taske

"This round was a lot of fun! I was really glad to get to play all my matches and have met some really nice people. What I love about the league is all the contacts you make!"

Calvin Paul

"Cannot wait till the next round, I really enjoyed myself in this round. Overall, the concept of Local Tennis Leagues is a wonderful idea....",

Pavel Novotny

"It was great to get so many matches in this time and all were evenly matched and competitive games,"

Paul Cunningham

"Excellent fun, really enjoyed it, met some nice people, am looking forward to the next round,"

Reveal CommentAndrew De Csillery bt Phil Chin (Jun 10) 4-6, 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A game of two halves with Phil playing solid tennis in the first set and me making too many errors. In the other two sets I upped my game, took the ball earlier, and Phil tired after a lot of running. Closer than it looked and a fun game. Thanks Phil and good luck for your final matches. "  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentTom Bryan bt James McGaughey (Jun 2) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Avoid the astro courts at Gosling - terrible quality. Fortunately we made up for this with some scintillating tennis, and definitely didn't have consecutive service games with multiple double faults in the second set..."  -- Tom

Tom Bryan bt Phil Chin (May 22) 6-3, 6-2
Reveal CommentAndrew De Csillery bt Laurence Hubbard (May 21) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Quite a tight game at times, but Laurence made a few too many errors, especially on the serve, which gave me quite a few cheap games. That backhand is a a fearsome weapon! Thanks and look forward to the next time."  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentNick Bunstead bt Pavel Novotny (May 18) 7-5, 3-2 Pavel Novotny Retired

Player Comments:

  • "Such a quality match that had some punishing rallies throughout, until Pavel badly injured his ankle and a trip to A and E followed. Very unfortunate and hope you recover soon!"  -- Nick
Reveal CommentPhil Chin bt Laurence Hubbard (May 18) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A fast paced match which started in strange circumstance with Heart FM playing ballards on the loud speaker for the 1st 3 games! I managed to really get in the groove on my serve which hasn’t happened for a long while and that helped me to hold my own games and a bit more consistency overall on my groundstrokes helped find the breaks to win the sets and the match. Some nice powerful rallies, till next time!"  -- Phil
Reveal CommentNick Bunstead bt Tom Bryan (May 17) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Really good and competitive game, with some long rallies. Tom has a really strong game, just a bit of rustiness from being out for a while causing him today to make a few too many unforced errors. All the games were tight, with many going to deuce. I´ll look forward to our next match and good luck in the rest of your games!"  -- Nick
Reveal CommentNick Bunstead bt Andrew De Csillery (May 14) 6-1, 7-6 (8-6)

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable, hard fought game of tennis. Andrew was hard done by the first set score which was a lot tighter in reality. This was proved in the second as he went 4-1 up playing great tennis. The second set was the toughest set I've played in a long time with some tremendous rallies. I clawed it back to 4-4. We both held our service games to take it to a tie break which was played on a knife edge and easily could have gone either way. Thanks a lot for the game Andrew!"  -- Nick
Reveal CommentJames McGaughey bt Laurence Hubbard (May 12) 4-6, 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Laurence said afterwards he plays better when behind, and he did in each set. In the first he was 2-4 down and won 4 in a row, helped by too many errors from me. He left himself a bit too much to do in the second and third, though, being 1-5 and 0-5 down, which was enough to get me over the line despite a few wobbles. Thanks for an enjoyable match."  -- James
Reveal CommentNick Bunstead bt James McGaughey (May 10) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Very little in this match. James was in control in the first, leading 3-2. Then perhaps a slight loss of focus on his part and some more solid play from me allowed me to take the first. The second set ebbed and flowed, with neither of us serving particularly well and therefore struggling to hold serve. Long rallies throughout and some great winners from James, at 4-4 it was very tight. Fortunately for me my first serve finally started to go in and some unforced errors from James gave me the set. Very enjoyable game, thanks a lot!"  -- Nick
Reveal CommentAndrew De Csillery bt Tom Bryan (May 9) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A really nice match, but I benefited from knowing the surface and also Tom’s rustiness after a long injury layoff. He has a great serve and big forehand - I’m sure it will be a lot closer next time."  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentJames McGaughey bt Andrew De Csillery (May 7) 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Super match, and a very nice way to enjoy some good bank holiday weather. The first set was very tight until I capitulated at 5-5 in the tie-break. Two poor games put me 0-2 in the second, then I managed to steady the ship. The second and third sets very much followed the pattern from our previous games, with Andrew always attacking and me scrambling around trying to make him play one more shot. Andrew hit lots of great winners throughout, just overhitting a few times towards the end which gave me the edge, along with the slow court suiting my defensive game. Thanks, Andrew, good luck with your other games."  -- James
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt Phil Chin (May 7) 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Phil struggled in the first set with his serve and unforced errors. Second set, a completely different affair, at 0:2 , Phil took control, serving superbly and hitting some nice winners to take a 3:2 lead. Very very right from there on, Phil had break points/game points at 3:2, 3:3, 3:4, 3:5 - he could have won the second set easily. Lovely match on a baking bank holiday Monday. Thanks Phil and welcome back to group 1 - you deserve to be here."  -- Pavel
Reveal CommentNick Bunstead bt Laurence Hubbard (Apr 30) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Great to get this match played as we missed out last round. The rain held off which was good, although windy conditions made things tricky. First set went my way as I played with a bit more consistency. Second set I struggled to get going, with Laurence playing the more positive and attacking tennis. I just managed to claw it back and take the set 6-4. Thanks for the game Laurence!"  -- Nick

Player Comments:

  • "A very competitive game on a muggy evening at Radlett Tennis club! Alan raced to a 4-0 lead and then a 5-2 lead as I struggled to get used to an unfamiliar surface and Alan kept the pressure on with solid serving and searching ground strokes. I gradually clawed my way back to a 6-5 lead, with Alan saving set points to take it to a tie break. Again it was very tight all the way but I sneaked it 7-5. From then I was able to pull away in the second set and take it 6-2. An enjoyable and hard fought game - thanks and hope to see you next round!"  -- Miles
Reveal CommentGeorge Booth bt Miles Robinson (Jun 16) 7-6 (7-4), 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "An early start on a warm day and the first set was all over the place, it had everything and somehow I managed to grind a few games out when I was 5-3 down and then took the tie break as well. 2nd set I played a bit more aggressively and reeled the games off nicely. Great match look forward to playing again soon Miles"  -- George
Reveal CommentChristopher Perry bt Alan Orbell (Jun 14) 6-1, 1-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A sunny day for grass and we opted to be the first players to play on a grass court that just opened for play today. I got off to a good start taking the first set 6-1 but Alan came right back in the second set to take that 6-1. All to play for in the third. We went break back and forth continually until the last one that really mattered and I clinched the set 6-4. Fun game, thanks Alan"  -- Christopher

Reveal CommentMiles Robinson bt Richard Washbrook (Jun 10) 6-3, 1-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Another lengthy match against Richie, on a sauna like indoor court at Gosling! After some tight games and lengthy rallies I edged the first set 6-3, then Richie took over and blasted through the second 6-1 with some big serving and solid returning to take it into a decider. I headed into a 2-0 lead, then Richie took the next 3 games to lead 3-2. We then had an epic game with multiple deuces and game point both ways, which I took to change the momentum of the set. Still could have gone either way but I took it 6-4. Thanks for another great game and look forward to the next one!"  -- Miles
Reveal CommentKevin Lomas bt David Gormer (Jun 10) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Was great to meet David again and get our match under way. The scoreline flattered me to be honest as david played very consistant and on another day it would have been a lot closer. The first set started very evenly with a few errors creeping in to davids play which gave me advantage on some of the big points. My serve was inconsistant where as Davids serve was almost perfect with him getting most of his 1st serves in. The second set played out similar to the first set but i felt my serve picked up a bit and i played a good few winners. Thanks for the game and good luck with your remaining fixtures."  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt Alan Orbell (Jun 3) 3-6, 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A warm evening match with the sun trying to blind us at times, apart from that, great tennis weather. The first set was close and I didn't feel like I played too badly, Alan though won the important points with his impressive work rate. Second set pretty much the same, gruelling tennis, long rallies, lots of deuces, I got ahead and managed to close the set out. I broke in the first game and with the momentum I thought I could capitalise, Alan dug his feet in though and won some crucial long points and took a 4-2 lead. There were a lot of deuces again where Alan could have extended his lead, I somehow stuck in there and got 5-4 up. Alan saved 4 or 5 match points before I got over the line. A competitive, enjoyable match. Well played Alan!"  -- Richard

  • "Fun match on a surface I struggled a bit on in very hot conditions, I started nicely going into an early lead and just kept hold of the momentum throughout. Alan also coming back from a nasty injury as well which didn’t help him, good luck with your remaining matches"  -- George
Reveal CommentGeorge Booth bt Richard Washbrook (May 26) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A big hitting match on a very muggy evening, the first set was a little bit passive from both of us in which Rich nearly came back from 2-5 to level. The second set we both played more aggressively and were hitting the ball very hard and it made it a much more enjoyable set, I led 4-1 again but Rich came straight back but managed to hold on at the end. Nicest guy I’ve played since playing in these leagues Rich hope to play you again some time "  -- George
Reveal CommentChristopher Perry bt James Booth (May 21) 4-6, 5-5 James Booth Retired

Player Comments:

  • "A great first set staying close with breaks either way to 4-4. James broke my next service and whilst I saved 3 set points it wasn't enough to bring it back. The beginning of the next set was much the same but James picked up an injury coupled with us moving courts to a different surface. Impressively James fought through injury to get 5-2 ahead but when I pulled back to 5-5 James chose to retire. Not a great way to end such a good match and I hope you feel better soon and look forward to playing in the next round when you're on top form."  -- Christopher

  • "Oxygen needed! Superb match with some excellent shots from both of us. The first set started with both of us not holding serve until the 5th game and then we both held serve until 5/5 where i managed to break miles and somehow hold my serve to win the set 7/5. The 2nd set started at a frantic pace with the game poised at 3/3 and both of us holding serve well with some lovely shots. I managed to break miles in the 7th game and hold my serve to go into the last game 5-3 ahead. In the last game miles saved 3 match points and we played 5 or 6 deuces before i finally won the match. Was a great game of tennis and look forward to playing you again sometime. Thanks once again miles. "  -- Kevin

  • "Another epic battle between me and Rich, this one 2.5hrs. Neck and neck the whole way and at 4-4 in the final set I managed to break and hold my final serve for the match. Great fun, thanks for the match, could have gone either way!"  -- Christopher
Reveal CommentKevin Lomas bt George Booth (May 13) 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Was good to get this match underway in less searing heat than last week and the conditions were perfect for our match. The first set although 6-0 was still a close match up with a lot of the games going to deuce and i just edged them. My serve was also fairly consistant during this set. The second set was a far cry away from the first set. I went 3-0 up although every game was close, then as soon as george won his first game he played more attacking and started dictating play. He was then ahead 3-4 and i felt he was well on top at this stage. I managed to claw back to 5-4 ahead and then after george saved a match point he double faulted to hand me the match. Was a great match.Good luck with your remaining fixtures and see you in next round"  -- Kevin

Player Comments:

  • "Its not often an everton fan gets a win against a liverpool fan but i managed to scrap to a win against richard who in all honesty was the better player on the day. I led 4-0 in the first set only for richard to come storming back with some great shots and attacking tennis to come back into it at 4-4.I managed to hold my nerve and play defensive to force richard into a few unforced errors and see out the set 6-4.With the sun beaming down richard upped his game in the second set and his serve was on form with at least 7/8 aces giving me no chance to get even a racket on it. Somehow i managed to win the second set 6-2 but in reality i should have lost as richard was the one pushing. Thanks 4 the match and good luck with the rest of your games."  -- Kevin

  • "Perfect weather for our tennis match at harpenden tennis club. The first set was closer than the score indicated with some good rally's and i just managed to take the set 6-1. The second set was neck and neck until 3-3 with both of us holding serve well and some great rallys that with the conditions being 25 degrees plus took a lot out of us both. I then held my serve at 4-3 and managed to break chris to go into my service game at 5-3. In the last game i was 40/30 up and then during a long rally i hit a cruel net cord to win the set and the match. Sorry about that chris! Great match in really friendly enviroment. Good luck with the rest of your matches and see you in the next round. "  -- Kevin

Thanks for coming down and good luck in your remaining matches Christopher!"  -- George
Reveal CommentKevin Lomas bt Alan Orbell (Apr 26) 6-2, 7-5

  • "Was good to meet Alan at such short notice and get both our first group 2 match under way. The first set was closer than the score indicated with some good rally's and i just managed to win the majority of them and see out the set 6-2. The 2nd set was totally different from the first with Alan storming into a 0-4 lead and i just managed to stop the rot and win my service game and break Alan back to make it 2-4. Alan with some beautiful shots then made it 2-5 and somehow after some extremely long rally's i managed to win the next 5 games to see out the set 7-5. Thanks for the game Alan and good luck for the remaining matches. See you in the next round. Kevin"  -- Kevin

The second set took a similar pattern; I was 3-1 up and Dave came back to lead 4-3, a break up. But this time I was able to take the next 12 points to win the set and force a decider. The third set started close; it was 3-2 before I managed to close out the match. A closely fought contest with a lot of good tennis played. Thanks Dave and I look forward to our next meeting!"  -- Michael

  • "A really tight match that I just managed to nick, literally. I took the 1st set, 2nd set followed the same pattern, nip and tuck. Ashley was serving for the set at 5-4 Deuce when our allotted time ran out. At this point Ashley was on top and had he served out the set I would have made him favourite. We arranged to meet the next evening but unfortunately for Ashley he just couldn't get going and I was able to win the three games I needed. Ashley was disappointed but incredibly hard on himself. Last time we played I think I won 2 & 2 Good enjoyable game though, best of luck for the rest Ashley"  -- David

  • "We played this match on a very hot sunday afternoon, which made running and chasing down shots a lot more tiring! I was overall just a bit more consistent and it has to be said lucky getting a lot of my shots back over the net one way or another...and in the 2nd set a back injury hampered Simon's movement a bit, still was a fun game played in good spirits - good luck for the rest of your matches Simon."  -- Stuart

Having been battered in the first set, I was surpised to find myself 5:2 up in the second, only for the fun to begin and then not much separated us for the rest of the match. The last set was actually 9:7 but that score isn't allowed when filling in: we've probably missed an LTL rule but what the hell, it was a thoroughly enjoyable match so thanks David! "  -- Dave

  • "A bit of a epic ding dong of a match this, from the opening game which lasted about 20 minutes right through to the 3rd set with dusk fast approaching. I somehow stayed ahead in the first set to take it 6-3 but the 2nd was neck and neck until a tie break upon which Dave played some superb tennis and took it 7-1 with ease. He took this form into the 3rd and with some aggressive shot making tennis went 4-0 up, at which point i thought the match was gone. However, i managed to win a few games and then slowly confidence returned and i went on a winning streak to win the remaining games and won it 6-4. Quite how i did, i'm not entirely sure as Dave played by far the better tennis, always a pleasure Dave and good luck for the round!"  -- Stuart

Reveal CommentSimon Phillips bt Michael Andrews (May 18) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A tough, tight but enjoyable match against Michael. The match ebbed and flowed backwards and forwards with Michael taking early breaks in both sets and me having to peg him back. Lots of deuce games again which seems to be a staple in our matches. Well played Michael, a couple of different points, and the match would of been different result. Good luck with the remainder of your matches."  -- Simon
Reveal CommentDavid Mincer bt Michael Andrews (May 15) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "At the start of the match, both of us struggled but David was able to hold some of his service games whilst I wasn't. Many of the games went close but he closed out the first set 6-2. The second set was competitive, but David still went 5-2 ahead. I was really struggling on my serve and I only won my first game on serve in the match to go 5-3. I took the next as well and it looked like 5-5 could be on the cards but David played well to close out the match. A close game and I look forward to playing again soon, cheers David."  -- Michael
Reveal CommentDavid Mincer bt Simon Phillips (May 14) 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "First time I've played Simon, can't say I was looking forward to it much after the warm up as he was hitting his forehand so sweetly :) First set was a lot closer than it sounds, 3 or 4 of the games could have gone either way, going to multiple deuces, 6-0 certainly flattered me! Second set, I just could not get over the line and Simon put me under immense pressure at 5-4. Being a betting man I'd have made Simon favourite had he won that set but I managed to scrape over the line Cheers simon, enjoyable match played in good spirits. I look forward to the rematch!"  -- David
Reveal CommentDavid Mincer bt Stuart Mackay (May 13) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Stuart and I have played 4 or 5 times now and they're always enjoyable, comptetive matches between two very evenly matched players. I definitely caught Stuart on a bad day, potentially because of his 'refuelling' the night before!!! I managed to keep my head in front all the way, and despite some bizarre distractions in the 2nd set was able to get over the line I always enjoy my matches with Stuart, always competitive but played with sportsmanship I fully expect Stu to exact revenge on me next time........................after an early night of course!"  -- David
Reveal CommentMichael Andrews bt Ashley Guinn (May 11) 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "The first set started close and it took me a while to get used to Ashley's unorthodox style. I went 5-3 up but Ashley was tenacious and never gave up on anything, and managed to make it 5-5. However, I managed to control the last two games and seal the set. The second set was then more one sided as I was able to go on the attack more. Thanks Ashley and good luck for your remaining matches!"  -- Michael
Reveal CommentSimon Phillips bt Dave Martell (May 8) 7-5, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Another really enjoyable game against Dave. The 1st set started with neither of us being able to hold serve in blustery conditions. We got to 2-2 neither being able to hold serve. I broke Dave a 3rd time to go 2-3 up and then held mine to go 2-4. I broke Dave again & serving for the set at 2-5, Dave came storming back to get back to 5-5. I was able to break Dave to go 5-6 up, and won the set on my service game that went to 10 deuces. The second set started off with us each holding serve, Dave broke me to go 3-1, but I rallied back to 3-3. Dave got 4-3 up, but a pause to turn on the floodlights allowed me to win the next 3 games, to take the set. Thanks Dave good luck in the remainder of your matches. "  -- Simon
Reveal CommentAshley Guinn bt Marko Johns (May 7) 5-7, 6-4, [10-8]

Player Comments:

  • "Marko served very well and took early leads in both sets. He also hit some really good dropshots and big frorehands which had me running everywhere. I managed to fight back, the first time to no avail but second time managed to take the second set. The tiebreak 3rd set was pretty tight, we managed to finish up just in time before getting kicked off! Many thanks Marko."  -- Ashley

Player Comments:

  • "A really good game with Lucy on a nice tennis evening. It was a race against the clock to get it finished in the light but we managed in the end. The first set was reasonably close with some long games in the mix, My fresh legs gave me the advantage over Lucy in the second, especially given that she was playing another match earlier in the evening! Thanks for the game and see you in future rounds. "  -- Jonathan
Reveal CommentThomas Beck bt Mark Dugdale (Jun 19) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Interesting match. We got off to a good start, levelling off in the first set at 3-3. We were interrupted just before the end of the first set and I then took the advantage making a winning set in my favour. We were then interrupted again and having to stop and start did not help Mark. I won the second set easily, not because I was playing particularly well, more a case of Mark not being able to concentrate on his game. Sorry the game ended without having a chance to really get involved. But thanks for the game Mark, and I hope you go ahead and become a member at the club."  -- Thomas

Player Comments:

  • "This was a thrilling and super-competitive game with Richard in beautiful, but scorching conditions at Batchwood. Richard played some great tennis, but i just managed to sneak the vital games at the end of each set. Both of us were flagging in the heat at the end, and in cooler conditions i think we would have had a 3 set epic on our hands. Thanks for the game Richard - look forward to playing you again in future rounds. Jonathan"  -- Jonathan

Player Comments:

  • "Great match with Richard today. Some fine passing forehand winners from him, a few cheeky drop shots from me along the way. Every time I edged ahead, Richard came back into it. At 5-2 up in the 2nd, I thought I was home and then promptly lost the next 3 games, 2 of them to love. Thankfully managed to close out the set and clinch and hard fought win. Well played Richard and good luck."  -- Ben

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable game with Jonathan. I've finally met someone with a more slicy backhand than me! Although I came out on top, the scoreline doesn't reflect how many games went to deuce and how much backspin was involved in the rallies! Thanks for the game Jonathan. Good luck with the rest of your matches. "  -- Ben
