This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

"Am really pleased to have joined the St Albans version of what I used to play at Highbury Fields. Great that Ed is a member at Townsend TC as we got to play on clay. A competitive match with some long rallies. I look forward to playing Ed again sometime,"

Keep up the good work!"

Reveal CommentPavel Novotny v Liam Baldwin (Apr 17) 7-6 (8-6), 4-4 TBC

Player Comments:

  • "One epic match with superb quality tennis that could have easily gone either way if we had finished. Drama in set 1 - I took a 3:1 lead, then Liam was in the lead at 4:3, 5:4 and 6:5 and I just about forced the tie break. Liam fought off 4 set points at 3:6 and with a bit of luck I closed off at 8:6 in the tie break. Set 2 - flying start for Liam with 4:1 lead, I fought back to 4:4 and sadly we ran out of time. We have to start earlier next time as both of us wanted to complete and I think we were heading for a 3 setter. Awesome match, thanks Liam"  -- Pavel
Reveal CommentKevin Lomas bt David Gormer (Apr 14) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable match in great sunny conditions. First of all David is a really nice guy and was great to get a match with him at his home club townsend. The first set was very even despite the scoreline and was hard to get any real consistancy on our shots as the sun was playing a factor in judging the bounce on a number of occassions. My serve kept me fairly consistant and i just managed to win the set. The second set was neck and neck at 2-2 after david broke my first service game and on the 5th game could have easily have gone either way but i just managed to break david and then managed to hold my serve and see out the set. Very enjoyable match and hope to play again in the future. Thanks once again David. "  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentNick Bunstead bt Pavel Novotny (Apr 10) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Great match with quality tennis throughout. I had to play my best to beat Pavel who got off to a strong start, winning the first six points. The first fives games were extremely tight and could easily have gone either way. After about the eighth deuce point on Pavel´s serve I managed to break to make it 4-1 and then from there see out the set. Great baseline rallies throughout, great workout that we´ll both be feeling tomorrow. Thanks a lot for the game Pavel and look forward to playing again soon."  -- Nick
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt Andrew De Csillery (Apr 9) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "All of us know that the first set score makes no sense given how balanced Andrew and I as players, it was pure luck as the the cord net was on my side many times and sadly for Andrew never. Second set was a very tight affair, Andrew taking a 1:0 lead then 2:1 to me, Andrew fighting back to 3:2 lead before I won the next 4 games with some nice winners but it was mostly down to Andrew's unforced errors on shots with very just too wide or too long. Great, honest tennis as always with some awesome rallies and great pace. Thanks Andrew, quality as always."  -- Pavel
Reveal CommentNick Bunstead bt Andrew De Csillery (Apr 4) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Much tougher match than the score suggests, with many tight games that I was just edging. Initially took a 2-0 lead, then Andrew was straight back 2-2 before I broke again and saw a tight set out. The second was quicker as he made a few more errors. Andrew hit some great winners off both sides, picking of my second serve. Thanks for a very competitive and fun match!"  -- Nick
Reveal CommentAndrew De Csillery bt David Gormer (Mar 31) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A closer game than the score suggests with quite a few tight games. But I made strong starts in both sets and didn’t let Dave back in. Well played Dave and good luck for your other matches"  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentAndrew De Csillery bt James McGaughey (Mar 26) 6-3, 5-7, [10-5]

Player Comments:

  • "As always with James a long match that sadly we had to truncate with a championship tiebreak instead of a final set. I hit really aggressively in the first set and won it in 25 minutes with a single break of serve. The second set was much more nip and tuck with several service breaks but James held his nerve to edge ahead at 6-5 and then break me to take it. I found the aggressive streak in the tie break to reach 8-5 following some very long rallies and great defence from James. I needed a bit of luck to close it out, which arrived right on queue courtesy of two net cords. Sorry James. Well played and thank you for an excellent match. "  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentNick Bunstead bt Kevin Lomas (Mar 23) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable, competitive match with Kevin. I struggled at times to find rhythm and to play Kevin´s slice. He´s got a big first serve as well, so when he was getting it in I was lucky just to get my racket on it. We had some good rallies, he got everything back, but I just managed to have a bit more consistency over the course of the match. Thanks a lot for the game Kevin!"  -- Nick
Reveal CommentLiam Baldwin bt Laurence Hubbard (Mar 22) 6-3, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "Laurence started better getting a 2-0 lead before I started to get my game going and turned things around taking the 1st set 6-3 in the 2nd set I managed to keep my consistency up and had a 5-3 lead in the 2nd. Before Laurence managed to find a 2nd wind and barely missed a shot with his great backhand and taking the lead 6-5. I managed to hang on and held Serve to get to the tiebreak. At 5-4 in the tiebreak I hit my first ace of the match which set up 2 match points and I took the 2nd Match point. Fun match well played Laurence "  -- Liam
Reveal CommentNick Bunstead bt James McGaughey (Mar 22) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable game with James, that we just managed to finish in the allotted time. James got off to a better start and was playing the better tennis at 2-2. I improved as the set went on and broke James' serve eventually after a long game. Plenty of good rallies throughout the match making us both run. Thanks a lot for the game James"  -- Nick
Reveal CommentLiam Baldwin bt Andrew De Csillery (Mar 13) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This time we play on acrylic, I was good at finishing off my service games winning the crucial ones keeping the pressure on Andrews serve. Unfortunately it wasn’t Andrews best day and he made a lot of errors and on other day I could of been in serious trouble If he had of made them shots. Good game mate! probably will play again in the next round :) Liam"  -- Liam
Reveal CommentJames McGaughey bt Kevin Lomas (Mar 9) 1-6, 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A good close match. I didn't really show up for the first set, while Kevin did nothing wrong. I took a very long game at the start of the second, and then played with more patience to overcome Kevin's staunch defence. It remained close until 3-3 in the last, with tiredness probably being as much of a factor as anything in the end. Thanks Kevin, good luck with your remaining games."  -- James
Reveal CommentLiam Baldwin bt Kevin Lomas (Mar 7) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Luckily for us it’s stopped raining just before we started, but courts were a bit slippery, and the Balls were bouncing low! Kevin held serve to start the match, before I started to take control of the match with my forehand hitting lots of winners and getting Kevin on the move. Kevin never gave up and is a nice guy, thanks for the game mate "  -- Liam
Reveal CommentNick Bunstead bt Liam Baldwin (Mar 5) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "This was a tough, fun match, with some really long rallies. One in particular felt like it went on forever leaving us both exhausted. I got off to a good start leading 4-0 in the first set, with Liam making a few unforced errors and struggling to find rhythm. However, with the start of the fifth game it was a completely different story as Liam started to dominate. His big forehand got going, whilst I dropped my level a bit and he came back 4-3. The rest of the set was a tight affair. The second set had some good quality tennis and was tight at 3-2. Energy levels were a little bit depleted, but I managed to get some cheap points on my serve. Thanks for the game Liam, really enjoyable!"  -- Nick
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt Laurence Hubbard (Mar 5) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "First things first, Laurence has one he'll of a backend, very powerful. The opener - the first 2 games were in no time at all and at 0:2 down I thought this would be a very short match. Somehow though I recovered and took the next 8 consecutive games. With 2:0 lead in the second set, Laurence got his consistency back and easily equalized to 2:2 and I knew I had to step up and started playing more aggressively racing into a 5:2 lead before taking the set 6:3. Awesome tennis, many thanks Laurence."  -- Pavel
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt Kevin Lomas (Mar 4) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Lovely and very enjoyable match, not to mention that Kevin is a really nice guy so thank you for the match Kevin as well as the match. The opener - we both kept our serve until 4:3 when I broke Kevin`s (must say awesome first) serve and took the set 6:3. The second set ironically was a lot closer than the first despite the scoreline with some very long rallies at a fast pace that often left me breathless. Great match so thanks again Kevin"  -- Pavel
Reveal CommentAndrew De Csillery bt Kevin Lomas (Feb 28) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Kevin pushed me hard at the start but once I’d worked out his sliced shots, I had too much weight of shot. But there were some good rallies and it was closer at times than the score looks. Well played Kevin and good luck for the other matches. "  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt James McGaughey (Feb 27) 7-6 (7-5), 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "What a great match this was, with many, many long rallies at extremely fast pace that often left me breathless. James had a better start in the opener, taking 5:3 lead and I just about recovered and forced a tie-break, where I was lucky to take the first set point. Pace picked up even further in the second set and I played a bit more aggressively, which paid off. This was one great match, thank you James, pleasure as always. "  -- Pavel

Reveal CommentPavel Novotny bt David Gormer (Feb 25) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It was great to see my good friend and ex-colleague David after a couple of years. We all know that group 1 is about consistency and that was on my side today. Dave's serve, when consistent, is superb (including his second) and I think with a bit more consistency, Dave will do well in group 1. Thanks mate, pleasure as always! "  -- Pavel
Reveal CommentLaurence Hubbard bt Andrew De Csillery (Feb 21) 2-6, 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Got a win in my first match since moving into the area!!! Andrew made the most of the home advantage in a quick first set but after that the momentum went back and forth and there weren’t many points in it. Finally I got very luck with 2 net cords in the final game! Sorry about that Andrew! Looking forward to next matches :)"  -- Laurence
Reveal CommentLiam Baldwin bt James McGaughey (Feb 21) 6-1, 4-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "I started the match well and was hitting deep with my forehand and managed to dictate the first set, from this point James defence chipping balls back into play was working well and I lost my consistency, in the decider I got my consistency back but wasn’t hitting as hard as I did in the first set so lots of long rallies developed, I managed to come out on top in the big points in the 3rd set taking it 6-3. Thanks for the game and the lift much appreciated :)"  -- Liam

  • "Very enjoyable and competitive match, and rode my luck at times. First set started very closely and was on serve at 4-3 before I managed to break and then take the set. Second set was more of the same with momentum eventually swinging my way To allow me to win the match. A lot of close games and rode my luck a lot with Miles missing some opportunities on key points. Overall a very enjoyable match!"  -- Phil
Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt James Proctor-Owen (Apr 10) 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A rare dry day, we played at Rothamsted Park, however the courts were still slippery in tennis shoes. I think I held my grip a bit better than James as he spent half the time trying to keep his balance during basline rallies. Really poor courts. I won the first set pretty comfortably playing simple tennis, James was missing a lot of big shots due to timing and balance. The second set James raced to a 4-1 lead, he cut the errors down and started to find his range hitting some big forehand winners. I won the next 5 games and was relieved to win the set as James was starting to play some great points. Shame about the court, hopefully be a better one for our next match."  -- Richard
Reveal CommentPhil Chin bt James Proctor-Owen (Mar 28) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Score doesn’t reflect ability, James is coming back into tennis and has good technique and a nice serve, just lacks the consistency and confidence that will come with more matches! In the end my experience and consistency of forehand was the difference but some nice rallies and close points."  -- Phil

The match started with five consecutive breaks before I finally managed to hold my serve and take the set. The second set started closely and momentum swung back and forth with Stuart leading before I managed to grind out the last 3 games for the match. A competitive and fun match, all the best in the rest of the matches!"  -- Phil
Reveal CommentMiles Robinson bt Richard Washbrook (Mar 18) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Thoroughly enjoyable game indoors at Gosling. Both of us were a bit rusty and so threw in plenty of errors amongst some good tennis, but this made for a really tight game which could have gone either way. I made a good start and led 4-0 in the first set, then Richie won the next five games with some good serving and returning to lead 5-4, serving for the set. At 40-15 up Richie looked to have the set in the bag, but I managed to save those two set points, take that game and the next two to win the set 7-5. Richie then led the second set 2-0, but I managed to edge clear to 5-2 with the help of a crucial net cord taking what would have been a clear winner from Richie wide, and then take the set 6-3. Thanks for the game Richie!"  -- Miles

  • "Another enjoyable match with Richie in really great conditions for tennis. First match after a while for both of us so a bit of rust to shake off and first set went my way as I was a little more consistent in the rallies. The second set was much closer with lots of tiring rallies and great retrieving on both sides. Richie broke early and was 5-2 up and I managed to save set points on my own serve and then again on his serve before breaking. The momentum was then with me and I managed to win the remaining games to take the set and the match. Always a pleasure, till next time!"  -- Phil

Player Comments:

  • "This was my first experience of playing a match on carpet (at Bushey) so naturally Simon got off to a strong start. However, I managed to hold my serve for 1-1 after 10+ deuces and this broke his rhythm - in the end I took the first set quite comfortably. The second set was very similar with an extremely long game (15-20 deuces) on my serve which I managed to nick to go 1-1 and then break immediately to 2-1. From there we held serve until I closed out the match 6-3. A very close game and a physical battle with close to half the games going to deuce. Thanks Simon and good luck with the rest of your matches!"  -- Michael

  • "The first set was a close affair, I had got myself 5-2 up, but couldn’t close the set out, Zac played some really good tennis and got back to 5-5 and then we each held serve to force a tie break, which I was able to win. In the second set I was able to hold my opening service game after we’d had many dueuces, and then break Zac’s opening service game of the set. From there I was able to hold on to my serve again, and from 3-0 was able to see the set out. The games were a lot closer than the score line reflects. Thanks for the game Zac and good luck for the rest of the league."  -- Simon

Player Comments:

  • "Played indoors at Venue 360... Tim served really well and hit some great shots.. The surface is so fast, there were not a lot of long points but some great winners from both sides. My serve was a bit less consistent but I think my first serve was working well... In the final set I was up 4-0, but Tim came back and won four games in a row. Bringing it to 4-4 but by that time the venue had closed. On recommencement, it went on serve into a tiebreak.. I luckily managed to go on a bit of a roll in the tiebreak. But great match Tim!" -- Ashley

  • "Indoors at Luton and a fast surface: the first set tie-break didn' t reflect the previous 12 games, which to'd and fro'd throughout. The old chestnut of more errors and doubles allowed me to press on in the second and finish a very enjoyable match: cheers again Mr K !"  -- Dave
