This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Keep up the good work!"

Player Comments:

  • "An early start on a nice sunny morning. Sam got off to the better start with an early break in both sets but I started landing some volleys and managed to claw my way back into it. The second set was close at the end with neither of us taking advantage of good positions. We both missed more than we should have - I must practise my overheads, Sam her drive volleys, but there were plenty of good rallies and some good serving on both sides. Very enjoyable, thanks for the game. "  -- James
Reveal CommentPhil Chin bt Andrew De Csillery (Sep 15) 6-3, 3-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Another typically tough match with Andrew, we've yet to play a match that hasn't gone the distance and this was no exception. There was only 1 early break in each of the first two sets, with break points few and far between, service games being relatively comfortably held. The match opened up a bit more in the 3rd set as a bit of physical and mental fatigue kicked in, breaks being exchanged to be level at 2-2. Andrew managed to get a crucial break again and lead 4-3, however I managed to up the consistency on the forehand and cut down on the unforced errors to grind out a couple of breaks to take the set 6-4 and the match. A good , hard fought match!"  -- Phil
Reveal CommentLaurence Hubbard bt Andrew De Csillery (Sep 10) 4-6, 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Anthony raced out of the blocks for a 5-0 lead. I managed to relax a bit and bring it back to 5-4 but then got way too nervous trying to get level hitting 3 doubles in a row after a game point for 5-5. 2nd set was even more nervy and lots of breaks lead to me serving again at 4-5 down but managed to hold my nerve and take the set. 3rd set both of us played better with quite a few longer rallies and deeper shots but I managed to get the edge right at the end. Thanks for the game!"  -- Laurence
Reveal CommentKevin Lomas bt Laurence Hubbard (Sep 9) 7-6 (7-3), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "After 6 or 7 attempts i finally get a chance to write a match report on our match! Although laurence had stated before the match he was lacking in sleep and in recovery from a heavy weekend he played very well. I tryed to target his forehand as his backhand when on fire is probably the best in the division and at times this worked but resulted in a lot of slices flying all over the place. At 6-5 Laurence played a faultless game to take to a tie break and although i won the tie break he continued his fine form into the 2nd set taking a 0-2 lead. I grinded back to i think 3-3 and then the set was anyones. I just got the rub of the green to win 6-4. As always with Laurence a great humoured match which i enjoy. Look forward to next time mate."  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentLiam Baldwin bt Andrew De Csillery (Sep 5) 6-3, 7-6 (7-0)

Player Comments:

  • "It was good to play Andrew again we had lots of long rallies and hard hitting shots. In the first set I was more consistent as Andrew was adapting to the surface, I managed too turn defence into attack hitting winners with my forehand. In the 2nd set I went 2-0 up and was comfortable but Andrew fought back with some really powerful angled shots off of both sides! He took a 5-3 lead and I had too save 3 set points! as the sky darkened it was time for floodlights, I broke back but then lost serve and had too hang in once again at 6-5 down battling back too the tiebreak. I really got in the zone in the tiebreak too see out the match. Hopefully play again next season Andrew :)"  -- Liam
Reveal CommentJames McGaughey v Laurence Hubbard (Sep 4) 6-1, 4-6, 5-1 TBC

Player Comments:

  • "A fun match, if not a classic. Laurence wasn't firing during a scrappy first set - there were a few air shots but they were as much due to the fading light as his social life catching up with him. We then played doubles for an hour while waiting for a floodlit court, and restarted on a slower court, but with new balls. By then Laurence was warmed up and he found a bit of energy at 1-4 down in the second, reeling off 5 games in a row to take the second set. I fought harder in the third but squandered two match points serving at 5-1 & 40-15. We finished on 5-1, A-40 when the lights went off, a fitting end."  -- James
Reveal CommentKevin Lomas bt Samantha Wileman (Sep 3) 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Really hard fought match with Samantha and based on her previous results in league 1 i was lucky to get away with this one! Her serve had me aced on numerous occassions and her back hand was powerful and accurate and had me scampering everywhere. The first set was neck and neck and took an hour and a half and Samantha fully deserved to win it.The second set there was nothing in it but neither of us could hold serve and i just managed to get ahead at 5-4 and force Samantha into a few errors to take the set 6-4. With the clock ticking we played a 3rd set and after leading 3-0 samantha came back strong to 3-2.The momentum then swung in my favour with some good serving and i saw the set out.Really hard fought match look forward to the next one."  -- Kevin

Player Comments:

  • "We played on Clay! in the first game on serve I was 0-40 down but managed too win that game and it kick started my first set, although some close games I took it 6-1 with some aggressive tennis and slice shots. In the 2nd set James really picked up his game as he always does and with some amazing defensive shots took a 5-3 lead, at 30-30 I managed to take the game as it was so close too a decider! I served really well in the next game and really fired all guns blazing in the last couple of games too take the Match 7-5. Enjoyable game as always with James :)"  -- Liam

Player Comments:

  • "This was a fun match played over 2 days! the first day the court was wet/Slippy and barely anyone could move we both agreed to stop play to avoid getting injured I was 4-3 up after having a epic 9 deuce game! Credit too Sam as she put me on the back foot with big hitting and serving, I had to do a lot of defending for most of the 1st set! The next day we played in the dry, with multiple breaks of serve too start things off. At 5-5 I was able to break and hold playing my best point of the match so far on set point. In the 2nd set I was able too dictate with my forehand and turn defence into attack much more often taking it 6-1."  -- Liam

Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt Phil Chin (Aug 25) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Good to play Phil again, he's always been a level above me in his play as we've moved through the leagues, so is great to finally get a win. The beginning of the first set was really tentative, we were both 30-0 up early on and lost our serves. We both were returning well and had some top rallies in the heat. At 4-3, Phil won the game after what felt like a 50 shot rally, both putting everything into each shot. I somehow held the next game and broke for the set in another close game. Phil broke early in the second, I then went for my shots a little more and won a string of games to go 4-1 up. The darkness fell at 5-1 and 5-2, I was waiting for the call that it was too dark, so great sportsmanship from Phil to play out the set! "  -- Richard
Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt Andrew De Csillery (Aug 24) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Perfect conditions for tennis and we had some quality rallies. On my first service game I was 15-40 down and managed to hold, this followed a run of comfortable service holds. At 3-3 having not troubled Andrews serve previously I got a big break. We had some big hitting rallies with both giving little away, I had to serve well in the set which got me over the line. Andrew gave me a few free points at the beginning of the 2nd and I raced to a 4-0 lead. Andrew then broke my serve which included a fierce down the line backhand off a big first serve. Andrew battled back winning more points, I was glad to serve it out as Andrew was finding his form again. Fun match, well played Andrew. Some much needed points in the relegation battle for me!"  -- Richard
Reveal CommentJames McGaughey bt Andrew De Csillery (Aug 21) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "This was a competitive match; I'm a bit surprised at how the score ended up, but was pleased with what was probably my best performance against Andrew. There were two long close games at 3-2 in each set, the first which I took with the help of a big net cord. The games after that remained tight but I managed to keep Andrew out with some good defence, and maybe his finishing was a little below par. Thanks for the game, best of luck for the rest."  -- James
Reveal CommentJames McGaughey bt Kevin Lomas (Aug 20) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A pleasure to play Kevin again. This wasn't such an epic as some our previous matches - I tried to keep the rallies short by attacking the net and that worked well as I hit a lot of volley winners. Kevin still made it tough, coming back from 2-5 to 4-5 and 40-15 in the second set, but I finally managed to string a few points together and close the match out. Thanks Kevin, till next time"  -- James
Reveal CommentLiam Baldwin bt Richard Washbrook (Aug 20) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This was a match with lots of long rallies and high topspin forehands! I made the better start in set 1 taking a 2-0 lead, and managed too hold serve until i had too serve for the set at 5-2 Richard broke me but i managed too break straight back taking the set 6-3. In the 2nd Richard made a blistering start hitting 3 winners and breaking me taking a 1-0 lead i yet again broke straight back just outlasting rich in some exchanges. At 4-3 a break up a couple of things didn't go rich's way despite serving huge in this match. At 4-4 i hit my best shot of the match flicking a half volley off of my feet for a winner. I sealed the match 6-4. Fun match with Rich look forward too next time, nice guy and we have a good contest!"  -- Liam

Player Comments:

  • "I don't know how i got away with this one! This match reminded me of a previous encounter with Andrew where i just managed to nick it and this one played out the same. Andrew attacked and did everything right i just managed to keep getting it back to him to force an error or two to swing it in my favour. The first set had numerous breaks and some good quality tennis despite the humity and could have gone either way. I just got ahead in the tie break and held my nerve to win the set. The second set at 4-1 i thought i was clear and dry but Andrew came straight back at me with good serve volleys and clean winners. It was a relief to win the 2nd set as a third would have killed me! Look forward to our next match Andrew and great to have u back."  -- Kevin

Player Comments:

  • "A really nice, hard fought match. Lots of long rallies and well hit winners. I stated well, managing to return Sam’s excellent serve well, and built up a 5-0 lead, which was enough to see out the first set. The early part of the second set saw lots of breaks of serves (a few too many double faults from us both, which is unusual) until we reached 3-3. At that point, Sam upped her game, playing really well to take the second set. I started the third set well, but couldn’t consolidate an early break. The set then went with serve until 5-4, where I had 3 match points on Sam’s serve, but she showed great match play to save the game. However, at 6-5, I had two more match points and managed to take the second of those. What a match! Thank you Sam"  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentKevin Lomas bt Phil Chin (Aug 16) 7-5, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Best match me and Phil have played together by far. The first set Phil stormed ahead 0-2 and i had to slog my way back into it to get to 2-2 with a game that felt like 30 minutes with Phil having at least 7 advantages on my serve but i just managed to nick it otherwise Phil would have been home and clear with a 1-3 advantage. I don't remember a lot about the rest of the set apart from rally upon rally with eachother breaking eachother constantly. It was a relief when i got the set 7-5 as Phil fought for every point. The second set i thought i was clear at 3-0 then Phil powered through to make the set very lively and i sneaked it 6-4 in the end through sweat and adrenline. Look forward to our next match mate and well played. "  -- Kevin

  • "Enjoyable game with Kevin like every match! I made a better start getting too 3-0 then Kev found his game barely missing a ball! Turning defence into attack, fighting back too 4-4 he then broke twice and served for the set at 5-4 and 6-5 but I managed too dig in hitting slice forehands to counter Kevin’s game as I simply couldn’t hit through him! this worked well giving him no pace too work with as i took the tie break (7-0) In the decider my slice shots and drop shots worked well but at 3-1 we run out of time so had too change courts too a carpet court, which benefited me on serve at 4-3 I hit 2 aces in a row my first of the match and broke in the final game too win 6-3! Considering kev hadn’t played in a month he was very solid indeed!"  -- Liam

Player Comments:

  • "Every time I play Richard his level goes up! Today he went up a break early and I had to raise my game to break back, squeeze a second break and then serve it out. The second set you write a tapestry about. The standard of returning matches the returns and every game was competitive with long rallies and great shots - and a flip of a coin for who won. Richard found himself serving at 5-4, 40-0 but in this set that wasn’t enough and somehow it continued and I took it 7-5. Richard deserved that set and the set deserved a tie-break! Looking forward to next time :)"  -- Laurence

Despite Toms short slices which were effective at wrong footing me, I managed to out last him in just enough of the rallies to take the first set 6-4. Tom saved 4 set points at 5-4 on my serve, and had 2 game points but I came back and took the set. In the second we turned the floodlights on. I broke to take the lead, Tom then won the next two games and was 40-0 up on my serve, after my level dropped significantly. I came back and won the game, this was the turning point I think. From then on I was either level or ahead in games. I served the match out to make it 6-4. "  -- Brandon

I managed to play a decent game to break Gustavo's huge powerful serve, and then hold my serve to clinch the first set. In the second I got in rhythm and wasn’t making so many unforced errors. We had quite a few long baseline hard hitting rallies. I took the set 6-1 to finish off the match. It was great to have another enjoyable match with Gustavo, thanks! "  -- Brandon

Dave started off well going 5-1 up quickly in the 1st set, and despite my mini fightback, he took it 6-3. The 2nd set was very close throughout, with holds of serve all the way to 4-3 when I managed to break Dave and close out the set. I took the initiative in the final set going a break up at 2-1 before Dave got on a roll taking the next 4 games to go one away from the match. I managed to claw it back and despite going 0-30 down at 4-5, Dave never got a match point and I levelled it up at 5 a piece. After I broke Dave, it still wasn't plain sailing; it went 0-30 and to several deuces but I got over the line eventually. Another classic match Dave!"  -- Michael

  • "My first match against Chris; I thought it was going to be tight from what others had said and that proved it be the case. In 30 degree heat it was also a thorough test of our staminas! In the first set, we both started poorly on serve with the first 4 games all breaks. We then got it together with several energy sapping points and long games and eventually it ended in a tiebreak which I was able to clinch. That first set had an effect on both of us but Chris struggled at the start of the second set and went 4-0 down. However, he then broke me and when he managed to bring it all the way back to 5-4 to me on serve, I thought we might be going the distance again. But I was lucky to take it 6-4 in the end. I just about won the set after playing a decent tiebreak. The court started to dry in the second set and we could move better. After 3 breaks to start the first set, I managed to hold to go 3-1, and that gap remained until the end of the first set. Ray then got off to a good start going 2-0 up and had a couple of chances to go 3-0 which would have been tough for me to come back from. Fortunately for me, I was able to make it 2-1 and once it went 3 all, I was able to pull clear and clinch the match. Nice to meet you Ray, I enjoyed our post match rallies/tiebreaks too, and hopefully we get to play again when you're back from Aus. Thanks!"  -- Michael

Player Comments:

  • "The first set was intense, with some very long rallies. At times we were all over the court, hitting back lobs and volleys, some points seemed to be never ending. The first set ended up going to a tiebreak, which I managed to clinch. It went 2-2 in the second set, but as Batchwood closed, we had to end it there. But Chris very kindly agreed to continue the match the following day at Rothamsted. The second encounter was much more topsy turvy, with Chris coming out firing and initally winning four games in a row. However, I then managed to pick things up and won the next four games in a row. After Chris won the next two games, I then managed to take the next two games to close out the match. Thanks very much Chris, it was great to play you."  -- Ashley

And she wasn't wrong we both started slow but picked up the pace. 1 break of serve each in the first 4 games then simon settled in and took the first set. I had to adjust my tactics slightly in the second set and took that. The came the final shout out. we both held serve, there were some ridiculous rallies, then simon broke and I broke back immediately. I managed to break when Simon was serving to stay in the match as he double faulted twice, wasn't ideal way to end such a match but I was glad i did't have to serve it out. Defo the toughest match i played in this group. Thanks Simon for a good game and good luck for the rest of your matches. "  -- Leslie
