Collapse AllWhitstable Singles - Round 40 | Thursday 13 August 2020 to Wednesday 7 October 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 9 September 2020)

It was great to see friendly, competitive tennis make a long awaited return to Whitstable and to welcome 4 new faces alongside our regulars and returners. The top group was fairly quiet but Group 2 was busier, and there were close scorelines across both groups. Thanks for supporting your local league and we hope to see you back in the next round.

Group Summary:

This was a very quiet group with just 2 matches played and David winning both of them to take the group crown. Both Branislav and Colin took David to 3 sets, and his match against Branislav was especially close. It's a pity that Andrew and Jed didn't manage to get started this round, hopefully you can start scheduling your matches sooner next time!

Final Rankings:

  1. David Mikhail 8.1 [W2] 4 WINNER
  2. Colin Thompson 8.1 [L1] 1 RUNNER UP
  3. Branislav Varga [L1] 1
  4. Andrew Burley
  5. Jed Green 10.2

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentDavid Mikhail bt Branislav Varga (Sep 11) 7-5, 5-7, [10-5]

Player Comments:

  • "thank you Bran for a great match played with great fairness and spirit. 6 match points in the second set for David yet Bran still managed to come back and win the set. David finally prevailed in the match tiebreak, although reading the rules again here it should have been a 10 pointer rather than a 7 pointer. Oops. As a 7 pointer was the format we had agreed on, we genuinely both thought that was what was required - in order to validate I have added three points to each tie break score. Bran, if you prefer to call it a draw and we invalidate the last tie break, just let me know, and we will change it fr a draw."  -- David
Reveal CommentDavid Mikhail bt Colin Thompson (Sep 4) 6-2, 3-6, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A Lovely September day and thankfully not too much wind meant we had no excuses! A good match played in a generous spirit. "  -- David

Group Summary:

Congratulations to Jonny for making a flying debut in the Leagues winning 7 matches to finish 2 points clear of James C at the top of the table. Their head to head was competitive across the first 2 sets before, "with both tiring", Jonny managed to pull clear in the third. James C had a strong round too though with his 5 wins including 3 setters against Gareth and James H.

Final Rankings:

  1. Jonny Lugg [W7] 16 includes 2 bonus points WINNER

Player Comments:

  • "Great to get a game in indoors, thanks"  -- Ryan
Reveal CommentJonny Lugg bt Ashleigh Richards (Sep 22) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "The early exchanges gave no indication of the final score and Ashleigh's serve, when it fires is a handful. I just seemed to get ahead and it all then went my way. One thing that stands out is what great people play in this League and once again the spirit of the match was fabulous. Many thanks. "  -- Jonny

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentJames Castelino bt James Humphrey (Sep 15) 6-4, 4-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Lovely hot day.. maybe too hot for tennis. Great game with James with some long intense rallies. James has a great serve, the best i have faced and when it worked I had no reply. I was fortunate it wasn't alway working when we played. Enjoyed playing with James and looking forward to playing him next year"  -- James
Reveal CommentJonny Lugg bt Gareth Williams (Sep 9) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Gareth hadn’t played for a while and although he had a superb top spin forehand and tricky sliced serve which I thought would trouble me I feel I got let off as he just couldn’t get his range. We had a good game played in a nice spirit and enjoyed a beer and chat after. Thanks Gareth for coming over to play at Whitstable!"  -- Jonny
Reveal CommentJonny Lugg bt Ryan Martin (Sep 5) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This match resumed at 3-3 fromWednesday when we were rained off. I knew this was going to be tough as we had sounded each other out the other night. Ryan played some fine tennis, has incredible court coverage and hit some fabulously accurate drop shots and lobs. I really enjoyed this game, had Ryan held serve and got over the line in the first set it may have been very different. Lovely guy, enjoyed the chat and a drink after the game. Thanks Ryan for coming over to Whitstable twice and for the spirit in which the game was played. "  -- Jonny
Reveal CommentJonny Lugg bt James Humphrey (Sep 4) 6-4, 2-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "James is the toughest opponent I have ever beaten and one of the most pleasant people I have had the privilege to play. Really good match, lots of close hard won games, some very tough rally’s often won or lost by the finest of margins. "  -- Jonny
Reveal CommentJames Castelino bt Brian Taylor (Sep 2) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable game for both of us. A few long rally's.. First set could have gone either way.. with Brian coming back from 3-0 to 3-3.. looking forward to playing with Brian again."  -- James
Reveal CommentJames Humphrey bt Ashleigh Richards (Sep 1) 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Nice game on a lovely morning for for tennis.Good to be playing again."  -- James
Reveal CommentAshleigh Richards bt Brian Taylor (Aug 26) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Brian got off to a great start and won the first three games with good serving and consistently accurate shots. Not wanting to get thrashed, I soon perked up and took the next six games in a row. The second set Brian produced many quality shots, however, my ever improving serve and Brian's lack of match fitness began to show. Because of this, he started to make a number of unforced errors which helped me to win the second set 6-1. It was an enjoyable game and I look forward to playing Brian again soon."  -- Ashleigh
Reveal CommentJonny Lugg bt James Castelino (Aug 26) 6-3, 4-6, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Competitive match played in a great spirit. With both tiring it was always going to whoever got ahead in the third set. Many of the games went to deuce and some incredibly long rallies. "  -- Jonny
Ryan Martin bt Ashleigh Richards (Aug 23) 6-0, 6-1
Reveal CommentJames Castelino bt Ryan Martin (Aug 21) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Deja vu playing Ryan again. Less duece games to last year, but some really good rallies. Enjoyable game hindered by intermittent winds."  -- James
Reveal CommentJames Castelino bt Duncan Lewis (Aug 20) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable game with some long rally's.. the last set I was 5-2 up. I was relieved to win the set as Duncan almost clawed it back. Think it's going to take a few days for both of us to recover."  -- James
Reveal CommentAshleigh Richards bt James Castelino (Aug 18) 6-4, 1-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "For my second league match I came up against a very dogged opponent in James Castelino. The first set could have gone either way, but fortunately for me, luck was on my side. The second set James raised the bar and fought tenaciously for every ball. I was lucky to win one game! The third set James got off to a great start and was 3-1 up, but somehow I managed to fight back and won the subsequent 5 games. In the end it was a very enjoyable and competitive match, but above all, very tiring!"  -- Ashleigh
John Jerrim bt Duncan Lewis (Aug 18) 6-2, 6-1
Ashleigh Richards bt Duncan Lewis (Aug 17) 3-6, 6-4, 6-2
